Kate’s son Jack insists he used to be someone else. Someone who died, tragically.

At first, Kate’s confused about what he’s telling her. Don’t little kids say the weirdest things? But soon she can’t pretend it isn’t something more. No four-year-old should know what Jack does – have memories from before he was born.

Then Jack reveals something he saw, years ago at the family lake house. Something that, if true, could tear their family apart… could never be forgiven.

What really happened all those years ago? And how far will Kate go to find out?

From the first page to the last, you won’t be able to put this book down. A one-of-a-kind thriller from the #1 bestselling author of Little Ghosts and The Things You Find in Rockpools.

Gregg Dunnett

Gregg Dunnett is a British author writing psychological thrillers and stories about travel and adventure, usually with a connection to the coast or to the oceans. Before turning to novels he worked as a journalist for ten years on a windsurfing magazine, briefly owned a sailing school in Egypt, taught English in Thailand, Portugal, Turkey and Italy, taught sailing in Greece and Spain, and also had several rather duller jobs along the way.

His brother is the adventurer Jono Dunnett who in 2015 windsurfed alone and unsupported around the entire coastline of Great Britain, and who is currently windsurfing around the coastline of Europe.

Gregg lives in Bournemouth on the south coast of England with his partner Maria. They have two young children, Alba and Rafa, for whom the phrase “Daddy's working” has absolutely no effect.

Gregg's debut novel was an Amazon top 100 best seller in the UK and was downloaded over a quarter of a million times.

Gregg on why he writes:

"I’ve always wanted to do two things in life, to write, and to have adventures. When I was a kid I imagined grand affairs. Kayaking across Canada, cycling to Australia. Whole summers in the Arctic. Did it happen? Well, partly.

I’ve been lucky, I spent some years abroad teaching English. I worked in sailing schools in Greece and Spain. I really lucked out with a job testing windsurfing boards for the magazine I grew up reading. I made a questionable decision (ok, a bad decision) to buy a windsurfing centre in Egypt. I’ve also done my fair share of less exciting jobs. Packing and stacking potatoes on a farm, which got me fitter than I’ve ever been in my life. I did a few years in local government which taught me that people really do have meetings that result only in the need for more meetings, and they really do take all afternoon. I spent a pleasant few months in a giant book warehouse, where I would deliberately get lost among the miles of shelves unpacking travel guides and daydreaming. I’ve done a bit of writing too, at least I learned how to write. Boards Magazine isn’t well known (it doesn’t even exist today) but it did have a reputation for being well written and I shoe-horned articles in my own gonzo journalism style on some topics with the most tenuous of links to windsurfing. But the real adventures never came. Nor did the real writing.

Then, in 2015, my brother announced he was going to become the first person to windsurf alone around Great Britain. I don’t know why. Apparently it was something he’d always wanted to do (news to me). It was a proper adventure. It was dangerous, it was exciting. Even before he set off he was interviewed on TV, in the papers etc... Some people thought he was reckless, some thought he was inspirational. Lots of people thought he’d fail.

But he didn’t. He made it around. He even sailed solo from Wales to Ireland, the first to make the crossing without the aid of a safety boat. I was lucky enough to be involved in a planning level, and take part in a few training sails, and the last leg of the trip. But he did ninety nine percent of it on his own. One step at a time, just getting on with it. That was quite inspiring.

In a way it inspired me to pull my finger out. I’d been writing novels - or trying to write novels - then for a few years. But it was touch and go as to whether I was going to be one of those ‘writers’ with a half-finished novel lost on a hard drive somewhere, rather than someone who might actually manage to finish the job.

I’ve now got two lovely, highly demanding children, so real adventures are hard right now. I still try to get away when I can for nights out in the wilds rough camping, surf trips sleeping in the van, windsurfing when the big storms come. I love adventures with the kids too.

I hope in time to get around to a few real adventures. I want to sail across an ocean. I want to bike across a continent. I definitely want to spend more time surfing empty waves.

FBI Agent Jim McGee is a few weeks away from retirement when his final case lands on his desk. It involves a fire at an isolated lake house that killed four members of a family. He and his colleague Robbins interview a surviving member of the family, Kate Marshall, but something feels off to McGee, and this last case will certainly haunt him for some time to come.

He and Robbins thought this would be an easy cut and dried interview, but when Kate falls silent McGee almost pleads with her, “Just tell me what happened, what really happened,"
Kate replies “You want the truth, Agent McGee?" she whispers. "I'll tell you, but you won’t believe me. She continues with the most astonishing story that frankly seems impossible to believe, either for McGee or the reader!

This was a well written storyline with a crime and mystery at its heart, but which also veers into the supernatural, ( A very good mix, I have to say). A really unusual story that had me quickly turning the pages in my desperation to see exactly where this was going. Recommended.

SPOOKY SEASON READ #1 2024
TW: Child Drowning, Reincarnation

“Katherine Marshall” began Agent Robbins has he formally began the interview with the suspect they believe is responsible for the Arson-“you should be aware that providing false statements to a federal agent, is a Federal offense-including those made today…”

But, how did we get to the point where Kate is the suspect sitting before agents McGee and Robbins, still smelling of smoke from a fire that most of her family has perished in?

WELL-it all started when a summons from her father gathered Kate-her two sisters-Amber and Bea-and their families-to a weekend at the Lake House-presumably to meet his new “friend” Susan.

And, it all ended with a fire at that same Lake House, two years later.

But between those two events are many TWISTS and TURNS that I promise you WON’T see coming!

And, many of the CHILLING SECRETS that will be revealed will come from Kate’s son-a toddler named Jack-who struggles to explain what happened from when he “used to be bigger”…

Kate’s husband Neil, is a scientist who doesn’t believe that reincarnation is possible but Kate knows that the things Jack is saying didn’t come from her, and their opposite opinions make the family dynamics throughout this book ring true.

I have never read anything by Gregg Dunnett before, but I am thrilled to have discovered his work. It was the perfect start to 2024 SPOOKY SEASON, and it kept me engaged from the first page through the last.

I can’t wait to discover his backlist!

AVAILABLE NOW!

Thank You to Storm Publishing for the gifted copy provided through NetGalley. As always, these are my candid thoughts.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again—Gregg Dunnett knows how to bring the most clever, thrilling "child with an issue" story to life. His storytelling style isn’t about making you feel bad for the child, but rather keeping you on the edge of your seat. The characters are so well-built, and the twist at the end was fantastic. But honestly, the way he tells the story is what hooked me.

There's this huge moment when the whole family comes together, and we get two timelines. One is where Kate explains everything that happened, going back to years ago when it all started, and the other is in the present, where she’s being questioned. Sound complicated? It’s actually super easy to follow and crystal clear.

My new "favorite authors" list just keeps growing! Oh, and the audiobook narration? Absolutely spot-on. Big thanks to Netgalley and Dreamscape Select for the awesome ARC!

Genre ~ psychological thriller
Publication date ~ September 18, 2024
Publisher ~ Dreamscape Select
Est Page Count ~ 358 (52 chapters +e)
Audio length ~ 11 hours 3 minutes
Narrator ~ Elise Roth
POV ~ single 3rd & 1st, present tense
Featuring ~ dual timeline, assisted suicide, deceased child

We begin with a FBI agent named McGee as he investigates a fire that took 4 lives. Who started the fire and why? Kate narrates the family drama tale between her sisters, Amber and Bea, and their families, which led up to it.

Kate’s son Jack is only 3 with limited vocabulary, but he’s trying to say something that’s difficult to comprehend. He seems to know things about Zack. How can that be when Bea’s 8 year old son Zack died before Jack was even born?

Wowza, what a unique premise, which is really hard to come by these days. It was really fast paced with its captivating story line. I know it’s awful to say, but I was quite pleased with who died in the fire.

There’s a lengthy author's note at the end that discusses why this book came about.

Narration notes:
She did a pretty great job. I have no complaints.

Cover gripe ~ love the eerie vibes of it, but that certainly does not look like it’s “a colonial style with high ceilings and big windows and surrounded by porches and balconies” as described. Pretty much looks like a standard cabin to me.

This book was difficult to put down. I requested this (from NetGalley) immediately after reading Angela’s review and received it within half an hour – oh boy, was I lucky.

Kate has a 4-year-old son called Jack, who has memories of being someone in a previous life. Her husband, Nick, is a scientist, someone who relies on evidence to form his personal views – so this puts Kate in a tricky position, particularly as Jack’s comments appear to become more ‘credible.’

Throw in Kate’s two older sisters (one of them particularly bossy), their partners and kids (one of them particularly obnoxious) lashings of internecine aggravation, a beautiful old family lake house, a serious crime, a mysterious death, and you have a riveting blend of drama.

The book starts with the elderly widower father calling a family dinner at the Lake House, a dinner shrouded in mystery. The drama starts there and continues until the last page. There were parts where the hairs on the back of my neck stood up, there were other moments I just couldn’t read on due to the suspense, and the fear of confrontation.

Brilliant, and highly recommended.

Gripping, unique, unsettling, and well written, The Lake House Children proved to be a thought provoking and mysterious read. Kate is being interrogated by FBI agent Jim McGee and his partner Billy Robbins about a fatal fire that claimed the lives of four of her family members...

Kate's four-year-old son, Jack, has been saying things that he should have no knowledge of. He is mentioning events that occurred before he was born. What he is saying has piqued her interest and is the cause for concern.

The Lake House Children is told the past and present timelines as Kate shares major events from her life, her family's life, and the events from the past. Through her POV we get to meet each family member and how they play a part in the central mystery in this book.

I enjoyed how Gregg Dunnett has readers questioning a key part of the plot. I found this to be very well done. I also enjoyed the family dynamics, the relationships between the characters, and the investigation.

I enjoyed trying to figure out how everything would come together and where the investigation would lead. I enjoyed the twists, turns, revelations, and 'aha' moments in this book.

I listened to the audiobook and thought the narration was fantastic.

Thank you to Dreamscape Select | Storm Publishing and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.

The Lake House Children by Gregg Dunnett

Synopsis /

FBI Agent Jim McGee is weeks away from retirement when he’s handed one last case: a devastating fire at an isolated lake house that’s killed almost a whole family. One of the survivors, Kate Marshall, knows exactly what happened, but from the moment the young mother starts to speak, something feels wrong.

Under the harsh lights of the interview room, the weight of tragedy hangs in the air. With four victims and one suspect, this should be an open-and-shut case. But the things she’s saying happened are impossible – so why is she saying them? And if they’re not impossible, then it’s the whole of McGee’s career that makes no sense.

When the grieving woman falls silent, McGee's unease grows. "Just tell me what happened, what really happened," he almost begs.

The woman’s eyes, filled with an unreadable emotion, lock onto his. "You want the truth, Agent McGee?" she whispers. "I'll tell you, but you won’t believe me. Even my family thought I was imagining what my son said. And now... they’re all gone."

My Thoughts /

First and foremost, a huge THANK YOU to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and author Gregg Dunnett, for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review. Publication date is currently set for September 18, 2024.

The Lake House Children is the twelfth published novel for author Gregg Dunnett, and this reader’s first read by the author.

When FBI Agents Jim McGee and his partner, Billy Robbins interview Kate Marshall after a fire at her family’s lake house - a fire that leaves four family members dead, they never expected the turn of events her story would take. McGee who’s on the verge of retirement, starts the book interviewing Kate about what has just occurred at the lake house - a horrific fire, but finds that some elements of her explanation just don’t make sense. As he tries to put her story straight in his head, McGee considered this might just be the strangest case he’s ever encountered.

Now the story had begun, she was already becoming lost within it.

This book is a proving a difficult book to review. Not because it was badly written (it wasn’t) or that it didn’t have an engrossing plot (it did), but because, I feel that if I start to tell you all about the story, it would be like I’ve told you what’s in the box before you’ve even had a chance to open it and look for yourself.

What I will say is this.

👉 This book “flirts” with the idea of the supernatural. You don’t have to be a “believer” per se, but you will need to have an open mind and be receptive to new ideas.

👉 The story (which is centred around one main tragedy), focusses on the relationship between three grown-up sisters, their lives and the lives of their children, in-and-around a lake house in a fictional town near the east coast of the United States.

👉 Middle sister, Kate, is our narrator, and she recounts her story with past and present timelines.

👉There is a crime (or two), and the FBI are investigating.

In terms of the psychological/thriller genre I’m a hard person to please. What I crave in this genre is originality - a refreshingly new take on a theme that hasn’t been done before, and that’s what we have here.

Dunnett set up his story perfectly and really enjoyed the “interview” type narrative between McGee and Kate. Although I would have ‘liked’ to have had a more conclusive result for the fire, I nonetheless came away feeling satisfied with the ending.

Looking forward to reading more from this author.

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Storm Publishing for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.

Kate is being interviewed by the police she survived a fire that killed four of her family members in their house on the lake. Who set the fire? She tells the story through the interview. This was a little slow to start but it did take off in a supernatural direction that added depth to the story. This leads to a beauty of a twist I did not see coming, then there is another juicy revelation that was quite the shocker. This was an audio book for my work commute I purchased cheaply from my Chirp app I was pleasantly surprised how much I liked this unusual suspense story. Will be looking to read more from this author.

Kate's 4-year-old son Jack insists he used to be someone else who died tragically in a previous life. Initially Kate and her husband just think it's his imagination, but when Jack starts revealing memories from before he was born, Kate finds it hard not to believe him and needs to know the truth.

Told in two timelines which were easy to keep straight - 1) two years prior when Kate's father requests that she and her two sisters and their families come to the family lake house to meet his new friend. 2) present day with Kate being interviewed by 2 detectives after a fire at the lake house.

This was very well-written psychological thriller that kept me glued to the pages. I had a feeling about where things were going and was surprised my intuition was right about one of the twists since I am usually a terrible detective. This was my first Gregg Dunnett book but definitely won't be my last. 4 stars.

Never read anything quite like this chilling take of Jack, a child who has memories of his prior life as a cousin. Excellent storytelling, narration was great, easy to follow, listened at my normal speed with no problems.

Great character development. Story kept me engaged and wanting to know more. Did figure out two of the twists but not until right before. Authors note was lengthy but gave description of what lead to the writing and creation of this very imaginative plot.

Triggers: profanity, child drowning, reincarnation, cheating.

The Lake House, a picturesque family getaway. A house where children make memories and adults make up lies…

A thriller with a supernatural twist, this is unlike anything I’ve read before. Imaginative and gripping, this kept me turning the pages, desperate to find out what really happened. And boy, did my jaw DROP at one point.

Gregg Dunnett never fails to disappoint, he’s one of my favourite authors. If you haven’t read anything by him before, I would definitely recommend you do.

Oooooohhhh this is a juicy one without a doubt! As I was reading I could envision it being played out as a movie, my brain was running wild and my imagination was in overdrive.

Sisters Kate, Amber and Bea are lucky that they have spent their summers growing up at their parents lake house, now they are women with families of their own and have to come to the decision to keep or sell the lake house. But it holds many memories though not all of them are good. When the book starts Kate is being interviewed about a fire where four of her family members perished (we don’t know who) and she takes us back to the beginning and tells us the sorry tale leading up to the night of the fire.

I was fully invested in this read, as Kate opens up to the FBI agents and reveals the mystery, it was a thrilling read with a unique storyline, one I definitely won’t forget.

I am not usually the biggest fan of supernatural storylines, but let me tell you, I loved this book. I could not put this book down but when I HAD to put it down (Toddlers... I mean do they really need to eat and be loved when Mama's got a good book? I jest, but come on!) I was thinking about it the entire time and could not wait to get back to it.

If you enjoy a truly original, well written thriller with a healthy dose of family drama, mystery, supernatural elements and a beach house setting then this book is for you.

I highly recommend this book!

This was a fun twisted family drama.

This is the first time I’ve read anything by this author and I was hooked!

There was a lot of switching back and forth from past to present but it was done in a way that made the transitions seamless and easy to follow. I haven’t read many supernatural books but this one was just enough supernatural where it didn’t make it seem unbelievable.

Will definitely be reading other titles from this author soon!

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

This was an interesting tale of murder, and how one family just fell apart. It is told almost entirely from the point of view of the FMC who is giving her witness statement to police after a fire claimed her childhood home and four of her family members. It seemed as if half of the cast in this book were just terrible human beings, and had some of the worst traits humanity has to offer. It was a well written book, but it was not overly suspenseful. It's marked as a thriller, but it really isn't all that twisty. Just a surprise or two along the way. There are a couple tough topics within the pages, such as assisted suicide and death of a child, so please be aware before reading.

Weeks away from retirement, Agent Jim McGee has one last case come across his desk. The case— a house fire that killed half of a family. Agent McGee spends his last few weeks interviewing one of the survivors, Kate Marshall, and the story she tells is out of this world.

This book was so much more than I expected. Based on the description, I thought it was going to be solely based around a house fire, but it was much, much more.

Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for this ARC of The Lake House Children. It will hit the shelves on September 18, 2024.

🇬🇧 Thanks, NetGalley and Storm Publishing for granting me early access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

Honestly, I really wish I didn’t have to write this review and that I hadn’t asked for an advanced copy of "The House Lake Children" by Gregg Dunnett, because it’s been a while since a book left me feeling this frustrated! I’m sorry if this sounds harsh, but I was so disappointed. To be fair, part of my bad experience is because the book was marketed as a thriller, but it felt way more like a horror/paranormal story. As someone who LOVES thrillers, I want a plot that stays grounded in reality, where the twists could actually happen in real life. So, heads up – if you're a thriller fan and don't enjoy paranormal stuff, this one isn't for you.

I had really high hopes because the premise sounded great, and at first, I was actually into the spooky vibes… until I realized there wasn’t any logical explanation for what was happening. The main character, Kate, drove me nuts! She reminded me of those horror movie characters who hear a noise in the house and then, instead of calling the police, they go creeping around in the dark like, “Hello? Is anyone there?” Seriously?! The scenes with the police were pretty weak too, and the whole crime investigation plot got lost in Kate’s confusing storyline. I just don’t think the whole detective angle worked well here. Even though the setup with the fire at the lake house and the mysterious survivor was interesting, the story didn’t deliver the way I hoped it would.

A personagem principal, Kate, deixou-me fora de mim! A sério?!

Woooooo! Stop what you are doing and do yourself a favour and grab yourself a copy of The Lake House Children right now.. and if you have Kindle Unlimited it’s FREE to download.

I’m normally a bit stingy with my 5 star ratings because, to me personally, a book with 5 stars has to be something exceptional, have that special ingredient that sets it apart from all the other books I read and The Lake House Children does. It also includes a very spooky 4 year old boy, a dual timeline, a very dysfunctional family and several dead bodies! Win/Win.

The story starts with Kate being interviewed by the police in the aftermath of a fire which has left at least 4 people dead. The reader is then taken on a disturbing journey back in time through Kate’s interviews of the events which lead up to the horrific fire.

The story unfolds slowly and powerfully, and the reader is never sure who has survived and who died. The Lake House Children is chilling and thrilling in equal measures and I don’t want to give anything away, so it’s best that you just read the book knowing as little as possible to experience the sheer brilliance of this story.

There are some OUTSTANDING twists that I couldn’t see coming and at least one OMG moment which caught me by surprise. I absolutely LOVED this book and found myself unable to put it down, but not actually wanting to finish it as it was so good.

This is my first book by Gregg Dunnett and I have already downloaded Little Ghosts which is FREE on Kindle Unlimited.

5 stars and also going straight into my Top Ten books of 2024

This book was phenomenal and I can't wait to get a chance to read more from this author.

This book opens with two police questioning Kate about what she knows about a fire that claimed the lives of 4 people. The house is jointly owned by her and her sisters and has a bit of a sinister backstory that Kate lays out for us. Throughout the tale there are breaks where the officers question- could this broken woman have been the cause?

There are so many layers to explore in this novel and I love how they are all laid out for us to traverse. The pacing is phenomenal; each time we expect that we have gotten to the end a new turn jumps up to blind you.

Thank you to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and the author for my advance copy of this audiobook

This book was clever, intriguing, spooky and thrilling. A well done psychological thriller that really will have you questioning your psyche and beliefs!
The story starts in the present setting up a straightforward mystery involving Kate; then switches to Kate’s telling of the past to fill the gaps of how we got the first scene in the present. On this journey, we are introduced various family members who make up her dysfunctional family.
The story unfolds slowly but relentlessly steadily. The pace was captivating. Various truths emerge and this was written so convincingly, equal parts chilling and unsettling. Outstandingly done! I will not say anymore about the details because it was truly worth the experience. I especially loved the “why I wrote this book” chapter, so insightful and informative.
This is my first Dunnett book and I already have another one picked out! Also, Elise Roth was a fantastic audio narrator!
