Morgondagen är för de modiga

Rate this book

Tomorrow is for the Brave by Kelly Bowan
Historical fiction. WWII. Based on true events.
1939, France. Violet St Croix is part of the elite, attending parties, wearing all the current fashions, and seeming to have it all. But Violet isn’t happy or content. She wants to matter. To make a difference. When France falls in war to Germany, Violet volunteeres to join the war efforts and is soon sent to North Africa as a driver for ambulances and officers. Her job is dangerous and she proves herself over and over again. She becomes the hero and known to the troops as La Fleur, the flower of the desert. There’s a rumor of a spy in their midst and Violet might be the person to undercover who it might be.

It’s uncomfortable and dusty and horrific in the number of injuries and deaths. I will never understand the justification for war. This story follows Violet’s (name changed) travels and recorded encounters as researched by the author and built into a compelling and deep feeling woman that wants to help and matter in life. And she does it with bravery and selflessness.
These are the stories that need to be told.
Visual and compelling storytelling.

“The opinions of others had always been like a living, fire-breathing dragon in her life, ready to snuff out her very existence at the merest hint of misjudgement.”

This was a spectacular novel!

Kelly Bowen held my attention from cover to cover and had my highlighter working overtime!

I immediately knew I had characters I could root for and understand. Georgette ‘George’ Chastain and Violet St. Croix were so masterfully crafted that I won’t forget these tenacious women any time soon.

Set in 1934 Nice, France and centered around the theme of new beginnings and pulling together threads of freedom, friendship and adventure, Bowen celebrates those who stepped outside of society’s norms and found happiness.

As much as I loved George, Henri and Violet, I equally detested Mr. St. Croix. His indignation and preoccupation on what others think made my skin crawl. I shook my head and was tempted to throw my Kindle across the room on many occasions. He continually fought with his daughter and disregarded her opinions or wishes. He couldn’t accept that she’d toss aside “the future [he] worked so hard to secure for [her].” I wanted to yell at him to remind him that if his daughter was old enough to get married, she was old enough to know what SHE wanted. Don’t get me started on her fiancé! Violet wants to volunteer with the Red Cross and become useful and her father forbids it. What happens next is on him! I pity people who make everyone around them feel small in an attempt to make themselves big.

I loved the emphasis on women doing and saying things that stretched the edges of society’s bounds at the time. I felt Violet’s desperation and was glad when she met George and Henri. I appreciated George teaching Violet that perspective is defined by a person’s happiness and capability. Having dealt with the same fire-breathing dragon that Violet dealt with, I felt her exasperation and championed her on to greatness on her own terms.

The historical fiction lover within was absorbed in the wonderful story centered around the flower of the desert, ‘La Fleur’, who served with the Free French Foreign Legion as a driver for a Commandant, the Legion’s medical officer. My heart fluttered (is that a thing?) reading about a man who knew the love language of the woman in his life…he brought her books. Books! In the middle of a war. Written in English. In a country where English wasn’t the main language. Oh my heart. Swoon.

A few of the spectacular lines I want to remember:

“Everyone always tells you that adversity and struggle builds character, but they’re wrong. It doesn’t build anything. It only reveals what was already there.”

“Don’t become an accessory. Not to anyone.”

“We can’t control how others choose to think. Best to just keep on living without trying to please everyone but yourself.”

“Everyone’s place is not defined by the opinions of others but where they are happiest.”

I’ll be the one standing on a soapbox with a loudspeaker telling everyone to read this book.

An intriguing story based on true events finds socialite Violet St. Croix serving as an ambulance driver for the French Foreign Legion in North Africa during WWII. After her commanding officer is murdered, she suspects a spy among them and risks her life to track the traitor. A fast-paced must read!

*3.5 stars ✨

For the first half of the story, we meet Violet. Violet who is living a pampered life, but finds the constraints her father and fiancé put on her stifling. With a war on the horizon, she thinks about volunteering. Meanwhile, she meets and befriends George who is not of her class, but believes Violet can do so much more. During the second half, we see Violet come into a strong female who is a driver for the higher officers. She’s in the trenches, but fights along with everyone else doing everything she can. She grows stronger than she ever thought possible. With a spy in the background, she’s determined to make a difference. I liked seeing Violet’s growth and I loved it at the end when she stood up to her father. An interesting story set during WWII.

This story follows Violet St. Croix as her home country of France finds itself on the brink of WWII. All she’s ever known is a life of luxury and being told how to live it.The more she ventures out on her own, however, she realizes that while she’s been trying to keep those around her happy, she’s been sacrificing her own happiness. In an attempt at self discovery, Violet volunteers as an army nurse, despite her family’s protests, and our story ensues- an inspirational one about the bravery of a woman paving the way for all the women to follow in her crater-dodging tire tracks. On top of the historical aspect, I enjoyed the mystery and romance components to this story, too! Because of this, I would recommend this book to long-time historical fiction fans as well as those trying to give the genre a go!

Told in dazzling and vivid color and with a cast of characters at equal turns searing and endearing, Bowen manages a perfectly balanced tale of love, war, espionage, and action that readers won’t soon forget. In the field of WWII fiction, TOMORROW IS FOR THE BRAVE stands out for its unique settings and situations, and its propulsive and immersive plot. Clear your calendar before you open page one. Amazing read!

Violet St. Croix is born into a wealthy English family. Her mother and Violet spend their time at the family villa in Nice. Her father, Commodore Robert St. Croix joins them from London as time and his important work permits. Violet is being groomed towards a successful marriage within the circle of a their acquaintances. In fact her fiancée has already been decided on.
Driving becomes her eccentric hobby that will be put away when she marries. Only it isn’t and it doesn’t.
It’s 1939. War is coming and Violet volunteers with the French nursing corps. Her family disown her.
How Violet ends up as a driver for generals and colonels is part of her extraordinary story that begins with Violet being just another idle rich girl who loves driving. That morphs over time into the story of a brave, formidable woman. Violet spends the war as firstly a nurse and then a driver in Finland, then Africa with the French Foreign Legion, going onto Tunisia, Libya then in Italy and beyond. Inspired by the achievements of Susan Travers the only woman to become a serving member of the French Foreign Legion. Bowen’s research and afterwards is formidable.
Violet is given the name of La Fleur by the men in this is a sensational novel, brilliantly depicting one woman’s war.
There’s intrigue, treason, love and betrayal. A startling novel. I totally succumbed!

I liked this! I've read a fair amount of WW2 women's fiction in the last year and I hadn't seen anyone handle the Middle Eastern/African part of the war, and I found that fascinating. The romance in this is very slight, but a lovely thread throughout the whole novel. Glad to have read this.

It's official. Kelly Bowen is now an auto-read author for me. I absolutely loved this WWII story! It took about 20% for me to fully get into the book, but once I was, I was swept away into this story. I loved the characters. I loved the writing. And I just loved this unique WWII story. It was so powerful and showed how one person was a person of hope for so many people. It showed how determined someone could be, even though they knew they could face death so easily. This book was just so powerful and amazing and everyone who loves WWII historical fiction should read it. Tomorrow Is for the Brave is a must read!

Tomorrow is for the Brave was a WWII story that will capture your heart.  With danger at so many turns, a little bit of romance in the pages, and friendship that will warm your heart, I adored this book!  This is my first by Kelly Bowen, and I definitely will be reading more books by this author!
You won’t last a day. Tino’s last words rang just as sharply in her head.

While it took me till chapter 5 to click with this story, once I did, I didn’t want to put this book down till that final page!  I didn’t like Violet’s fiancé, Tino.  Or her family either.  Tino was controlling, grumpy, boring, and he invoked a lot of anger towards him.  With the brink of war on their doorsteps, Violet wanted to help and volunteer with the Red Cross.  Yet Tino and her father forbade it.  But sometimes you have to go with your gut, and I love that Violet did just that!
George linked her arm through Violet’s. “There is a reason we chose to do this together . To come here together. None of this is easy. But having a friend makes the truly hard things bearable. Having you here has made these months away from home bearable.”
Violet heard the slight catch in George’s voice.

Violet was tenacious, brave, and someone that many will remember for their lifetime and beyond!  I loved the historical note at the end of this story, that spoke of how Violet St. Croix was inspired by real life Susan Travers and what her experience was!  From the moment that Violet signed up with the Red Cross, her entire future changed.  I loved how she created independence for herself.  I love that how led to her driving an ambulance.  Violet was a woman who took charge of a situation, and I was just there gripping the pages having to know what happened next.  While fear and horror leaped from the pages.
The first bomb fell somewhere behind them, a dull, crumping noise that ignited the darkness and shook the ambulance. George gripped the side of the ambulance door, and Violet gritted her teeth but didn’t slow.

On top of Violet, I loved her best friend, George.  She was true, kindhearted, and the friendship she forged with Violet was beautiful.  And besides George, I couldn’t help but love Henri.  The animosity between Violet and Henry was done so fabulously!   Their banter was smile inducing and fun!  So, the moments where Henri listing 5 things about Violet, the book, dancing, and so much more…oh I was a goner.  I loved Henri!  Yet Henri and Violet were in such dangerous situations.  There were no guarantees, and I was so nervous that they could just survive to that next day.
“Henri.” Violet finally stood. “We’ll survive this. We’ve come too far.”
“No matter what happens, I’ll be with you out there. You might not see me, but I’ve got your back. That I promise.”
“I know.” She reached up and touched the side of his face. “And I’ve got yours.”

This book made me scream out loud.  I was terrified for Violet in a certain scene!  Yet hold tightly onto all your hope, because there is an epilogue that is set in the future.  And I closed this book with a smile on my face.  Also, there was a mystery.  We got a few chapters sprinkled here and there with a spy’s POV.  It ended up being my secondary guess, and that’s all I’m saying!   So good luck trying to figure it out!  And I can’t recommend this book enough for those that love historical fiction with a sprinkling of romance!

4.5 stars, rounding up to 5. I loved it!

Kelly Bowen strikes again with another thrilling story set during WWII. This time she abandoned the dual timeline feature she used in The Paris Apartment and The Garden of Lost Secrets to keep the whole story set during the war.
A few thoughts:
I loved watching Violet grow from dormouse to valiant warrior. I loved the hero and their very low key romance. and I really liked the opportunity to expand my knowledge of WWII action in North Africa.
The spy sub-plot was well-done. I was certainly confused about who he could be, though I had winnowed my choices down to two men.
I found the last chapter to be oh so swoon-worthy and totally satisfying.
Be sure to read the author's historical note--very interesting and informative.

5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Bowen has a way with words. I was completely immersed in this story.

Violet was a wonderful character who had to fight for what she wanted. I was thrilled when she walked away from her fiancé who was so controlling.

This story is perfect for historical lovers and I highly recommend it.

I will doing a giveaway for this novel soon.

I loved reading Kelly Bowen's Season Of Scandal series last year but I hadn't tried any of her Historical Fiction books yet, so I was very excited to dive into Tomorrow Is For The Brave and it did not disappoint! I usually read more HR novels than HF but I was drawn in by the premise here and I ended up loving it!

Violet St. Croix is a young socialite who seems to live a charmed life in Nice, France and though she tries her best to meet her parents' expectations, she isn't always happy with the way her family or friends lead their lives. After falling in love with cars a few years ago, she had convinced her father to let herself drive but her new fiance isn't too keen on the way she works on them and repairs them too. Chafing at the restrictions imposed on her, she makes some new friends - George, who wants to volunteer with the Red Cross as a nurse and her brother Henri, who's a bit prickly and not too impressed by Violet at first. When war breaks out, Violet ends up defying her parents and fiance's expectations by signing up to volunteer as a nurse too. Though she's not that talented at nursing, her driving skills are perfect and soon she becomes an ambulance driver and eventually goes on to drive cars for military personnel in North Africa too. And while working there alongside the French Foreign Legion, she encounters some plots that have her suspecting that there might be a spy in their midst.

Violet was a fascinating protagonist and I loved that her character was inspired by the real-life Susan Travers, who was the only official female member of the French Foreign Legion! Her slow growth from a hesitant girl to a confident and brave officer was amazing! She doesn't let the words of her family or other men break her and operates within her own set of principles. I also liked the setting that focused on the North African front, unlike the other WWII novels! There's also a mystery subplot surrounding the spy and a few red herrings as we try to guess his identity. I also liked the touches of romance with Henri and Violet's friendship with George and the other officers. I loved reading the author's note at the end too!
Overall, this was a great historical fiction novel with an admirable protagonist and equal parts action and mystery!

I absolutely love this story, especially the ending. WWII Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres, this story was written beautifully. My emotions were all over the place. I wanted to yell at Violet's parent's and Tino; the audacity of them. And for the way they treated her when Violet visited them one last time. The nerve!

The intensity of the war scenes had my heart racing and I was completely engrossed in what would happen next.

I loved the love story brewing between Henri and Violet. The ending was absolutely beautiful all the way until the last page.

Violet finding her independence, determination and bravery was inspiring. My favorite quote:

"But the problem, sir,is that no one truly knows for certain what tomorrow will bring, no matter where or who you are. But what I know without a doubt is what I will bring to tomorrow. Tomorrow is for the brave, who had the chance to surrender their convictions and beliefs a long time ago but did not. None of us got here by accident, sir. We chose this. We did not choose surrender but chose tomorrow, whatever that may look like."

I was really impressed by the expressive and vivid writing that allowed me to feel like I could see each place, and smell the scents as if I were there alongside the characters. There was one chapter where I’m fairly sure I held my breath the whole time. So intense was the situation and the writing done so well it felt as if I was living that moment. I also appreciated getting a look at different areas of fighting during the war showcasing places like Finland, Syria, and Libya.

The female perspective was incredible and I would have happily read an entire story of just her life. Then reading the authors note and learning her story was inspired by the real experiences of Susan Travers made it even more amazing.

The spy perspective grew on me but I kinda wish the author had given him a code name rather than referring to him as “the spy” in his chapters.

This was a really good HF and one that would be great for anyone wanting a different perspective from WWII with a remarkable woman as the focus.

Thank you @Readfor for the #gifted copy!

I absolutely LOVED this historical fiction with a bit of romance.

Since this is a Forever Romance book, I thought there would be more romance. The beginning gave me that impression as well because I could immediately tell who the love interest was (he gave her a nickname and everything), but then when we're fully engaged in the plot of the book, the romance drops off. It's still woven throughout, but the romance isn't as prominent as I would expect in a romance book from a romance imprint.

HOWEVER, the lack of romance didn't bother me. I was given enough to keep me satisfied and the rest of the plot kept me ENGAGED. I loved the time jumps to different settings and the mystery of who the spy was. The book was well-written and I just wanted to keep reading so I could figure out who was trying to kill the MC!

This book is about hope during wartime, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

A fast-paced WWII historical fiction book about a brave young socialite, Violet St. Croix who is determined to help in the war efforts with her driving abilities even when her family and fiance scoff at her ambitions and think she's crazy.

When Violet is told she can't train as an ambulance driver she enlists to train as a nurse instead but quickly her talents as a driver are spotted and Violet gets caught up in trying to solve a murder and catch a double agent.

Really good on audio and perfect for fans of authors like Kate Quinn or Kristin Harmel with a main character who is memorable and easy to root for. Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early digital copy in exchange for my honest review!

I absolutely love this book! I was immediately drawn into the story, and I read it as fast as I could to find out what happened next. It's such an interesting and original story. There's intrigue, suspense, murder, espionage, spies, friendship, comradery, and true love!

Violet is AMAZING! Her growth throughout the book is commendable! She's strong, competent, and loyal. Henri is awesome! He's a leader, intelligent, and a protector.

I was totally surprised by who the spy was. The author did such a great job leading towards one person and then going another way.

This is the first book that I've read by this author, but it definitely won't be the last!

I absolutely enjoyed reading this book. “Tomorrow Is For the Brave”, is a fantastic historical fiction novel inspired by actual events, centred around World War II and it showcases strong, brave and courageous women like Violet St. Croix. The”spy” component added a layer of mysteriousness to this captivating story, compelling the reader to flip to the next page. Kelly Rowen’s writing style commands the reader’s attention and maintains a tight grip from the beginning to the end whilst paying homage to great women who made a difference in the war effort. It’s descriptive and immersive.

Violet St.Croix was born into a lavish and luxurious lifestyle, she was a true socialite, but her life lacked real purpose and there was a void that needed to be filled. Latest fashions be damned, Violet preferred trousers over silk dresses and she was not afraid to get her hands dirty and she did. In an act of defiance Violet signed up for the war effort, she calls the wedding off and gives Tino back the engagement ring and then completely severs the societal familial hold and all of the luxuries that came with it. Violet searches for meaning in her life and she will find it in the harshest possible way with the French Foreign Legion, her driving, mechanical and linguistic skills will prove to be very beneficial. It’s a mesmerizing story about a woman who is willing to risk it all in the face of danger, it’s her choice and it is the right thing to do, and choosing this particular path in life instills feelings of pure accomplishment and satisfaction for Violet. She is tenacious and brave. Pageantry could never hold a candle to danger and espionage. When things became dangerous, Violet became alive.

This suspense filled historical novel is actually based on a real life woman driver Susan Travers. It is an absolutely amazing story about hope, courage, and finding your place in the world and living life on your own terms. Violet was never attracted to the exuberant abundance of wealth and privilege her family enjoyed, she truly felt more at ease with the simplicity in the lives of George, Henri, and the rest of their family.

This is my first by author Kelly Bowen, and I know that I definitely will be reading more books by this author!

Historical fiction that draws me in and teaches me something new is my favorite kind. Tomorrow Is for the Brave did both. This is a WWII novel that is based on a woman who challenged conventions and shattered boundaries.

Focused on the activities of the French Foreign Legion, it transports the reader from France to Northern Africa and highlights battles and campaigns that are often ignored in popular fiction. Kelly Bowen’s masterful writing paints vivid and often horrific pictures of the devastation of war.

Violet St. Croix is a privileged French socialite who walks away from her family and comfortable life to volunteer to support the war effort. Her unusual skills quickly find her assigned to a role that puts her in harm’s way where her bravery is on full display.

The author combines drama, intrigue, and romance to produce a compelling page turner. Anyone looking for a WWII era novel that is not focused on the Holocaust will find this to be an excellent choice.

Thank you to NetGalley and Forever for the opportunity to read an advance copy of this novel in exchange for my unbiased review.

This book was truly remarkable! If you are a historical fiction lover, this is a must read! I was hooked from the start and fell in love with Violet and her strength and tenacity. I loved how she was a socialite who came from everything and left it all to join the war efforts. At first becoming a nurse, and then a driver for the French Foreign Legion. This was such a page turner and I loved every second of my time reading this one. Perhaps my favorite part was the Historical Note at the end and learning about Susan Travers, the inspiration behind Violet St. Croix.

🎧I alternated between the physical book and the audiobook, narrated by Marisa Calin. I loved my time listening to Calin and thought she was the perfect fit for this role. I found the pacing to be perfect and cannot recommend the audiobook enough if you are looking for an outstanding historical fiction novel on audio!

This is a hard one for me to rate. Let’s break it down. I was so inspired by Violet and George who we meet right away. The strength and courage they face in a variety of situations is remarkable. They are interesting, fun and so strong. I loved reading about them and their lives!

Then, the war happens. And while it’s part of their story, so much of these war scenes were too much and went on too long. I was bored by a majority of the war pages, minus the parts where the females were *doing* something. I know it’s setting the scenes for war, etc. it just didn’t interest me.

I did enjoy the part about the spy and I figured it out right away. However, it was fun to second guess my guess and I felt so clever when I was right! This helped very much make this book interesting and multifaceted.

Gifted copy thanks to Forever Publishing, NetGalley and BookSparks. All opinions are my own.

Violet St. Croix has no desire to lead the life her prominent parents have planned out for her. So when she leaves her fiancé and joins the war effort she finally feels free to be herself. Violet begins as nurse, but with her penchant for automobiles Violet eventually ends up as an ambulance driver and driver for other military personnel. When she ends up in North Africa with the French Foreign Legion Violet knows something is amiss after a mysterious death. There seems to be a spy in their midst. Can Violet find the spy is before more death and destruction occur?

With a mix of history and romance this book was a wonderful read!

WWII, Free French Army and the North African campaigns. Bowen has written a fictionalized account of Susan Travers, the only woman member of the French Foreign Legion. I have read a lot of WWII books but really nothing about the Allied North African campaign of 1942. Brave is a fascinating, well told story with a little spy intrigue thrown in to really spice things up. Travers’ story is enthralling and Bowen keeps the pace moving along with spy bits interspersed in a whodunnit that I did not figure out.
I love this quote from St. Croix/Travers that completely encapsulates the themes of this incredible story: “Tomorrow is for the brave, who had the chance to surrender their convictions and beliefs a long time ago but did not. None of us got here by accident, sir. We chose this. We did not choose surrender but chose tomorrow, whatever that may look like.”
Highly recommend.

Violet St. Croix has it all. She grew up within a rich family & has everything she could want - dresses, jewelry, a car of her very own, but she truly doesn’t feel like she is known or listened to by those around her. She wants more to life & wants to do more. So she joins the Free French Foreign Legion & serves as a driver, who becomes famously known as La Fleur among the men.

What a great novel! I just wanted to find out what was going to happen next. I love the way the author wrote it - from Violet’s point of view & from the point of view of mysterious spy, who we don’t know the identity of until the last few chapters of the book. So so good!!

Oh my gosh how I loved this book. From France, Finland, Syria and Libya this book is the tale of a heroic woman, who knew that there was a woman driver in the French Foreign Legion? I really like how the author took her time to set up the characters, give us their back story before proceeding into the war years. If you are looking for a new and fresh perspective on WWII or just want a great story, this is the book for you. I can’t wait to see what this author writes next.
