Holding Out for a Holiday Hero

Rate this book
A holiday romance with a dash of romantic suspense and a former military hero who is so not feeling the festive spirit…

Bah humbug. Bounty hunter Jake Hale hates Christmas. He doesn’t do twinkling lights, festive packages, and you definitely won’t ever catch him singing Christmas carols. What he will do? Track down the worst of the scum out there. The former special ops soldier makes merry by tossing the naughty into prison cells and getting a grand pay day. Ho, ho, ho.

Then a ghost from Christmas past walks through his door.

True Blakeley is always at the top of the nice list. Beautiful, sweet, with an innocence that—yep, he might have been tempted to destroy once or twice—she’s there to hire him. There have been a string of dangerous accidents in her life, and True fears that someone is trying to kill her. Not at all the sort of case that Jake would usually take—he hunts down the criminals after they jump bail, not before they’ve even been arrested. But one look into True’s bedroom eyes, and he can’t refuse. Maybe he still is a bit too tempted by the girl who got away…and surely one nice act won’t kill him? For her, he can play the hero.

He'll close the case and be home in time for Christmas dinner.

Except, on the first morning of his investigation, he finds a dead body. One waiting underneath True’s glittering Christmas tree. The attacks are real, and it’s clear that someone is gunning for True. But Jake is on the job now, and no one is going to hurt her. His protective instincts are in overdrive…and so is the desperate desire that he’s always felt for True. This time, he’s done fighting that desire. He’ll finally show True just how fantastic it can be when you aren’t nice. Welcome to his naughty list.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HOLIDAY HERO is a hot Christmas romance with action, laughter, thrills, and enough steam to melt the Christmas snow. Opposites attract? Check. Super alpha hero? Check. Danger, desire? Double check. Santa isn’t the only one checking things off his list…Jake Hale is taking care of business, too, and this unlikely hero is about to fall hard and fast for the woman of his Christmas dreams.

Holding Out for a Holiday Hero by Cynthia Eden is a stand alone, holiday, cheeky romantic suspense. If you like an alpha, possessive hero who will do whatever it takes to keep the woman of his dreams safe, this book is for you!

Jake Hale is ex-military, and now is a successful bounty hunter. He takes great pleasure in putting the bad guys back in jail where they belong. Jake considers himself an anti Christmas Scrooge. He comes off as a total grump and considers himself kind of a bad guy. But as you get to know him and some of the things he has done for other people, he is the complete opposite. I adored him.

Jake and his younger brother had a rough childhood in Rosewood, Georgia. Even though he is successful now, he never really shook that feeling of being less than everyone else. Ever since he was sixteen years old, he has had a crush on the sweetest, most beautiful girl in his school, True Blakely. After high school, though, he enlisted and she moved away. Now she’s back. It’s just before Christmas and she has just walked through his office door, asking him for help.

True is working for a museum in town, and lately, she has been experiencing “accidents” that she knows weren’t really accidents. And she’s sure someone has been in her home. Jake is a bounty hunter, not a private detective, but one look into her beautiful eyes, and he’s all in. Someone wants to hurt her and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe, and to find out what is going on.

I loved these two. I was hooked from the start and kept coming back to it today and grabbing a few more pages whenever I could because I wanted to know what happens next. It was steamy, swoony, fun and also suspenseful. I really did adore Jake and his tough guy personality, when in truth, he was just a big softy. I have only read a few of Cynthia’s books in the past but after reading this, it makes me want to read more. I will definitely be looking through her library.

“Sometimes, Christmas miracles could happen. Even to a former Scrooge like him.”

HOLDING OUT FOR A HOLIDAY HERO by Cynthia Eden is a hot and steamy holiday romantic suspense that kept me laughing out loud, turning the pages to figure out the villain in the suspense plot, and cheering for Jake as he turns from Scrooge into the hero True needs. This is a fast-paced standalone holiday romantic suspense with a great H/h duo and interesting secondary characters.

True Blakeley was the sweet, good girl in high school. Jake Hale was the bad boy who secretly wanted her. Now the former special ops soldier is a bounty hunter who hates Christmas, and beautiful True, the object of all his dreams, comes to him for help. Jake is determined to protect her as well as bed her. What he doesn’t realize is True has no problem with any of that.

Believable characters, fun dialogue, a well-paced suspense plot, and smokin’ hot sex scenes make this the perfect for me holiday read.

The holiday vibes mixing with a classic Cynthia Eden romance of obsessed H and a sweeter h in distress were just working for me. I had such fun with this read and it even had me tearing up unexpectedly with a couple emotional details. It’s fast paced and still manages some good depth and, of course, some nice steam. Each chapter begins with a quote and there are holiday puns. Also trigger warning for some violence, stalking, and mention of a prior miscarriage.

Jake (H) is a bounty hunter in the small town that he grew up in. He used to be poor and a bit of a trouble-maker. He enlisted in the military and when he came home, he continued to pursue bad guys. He’s had a crush on True (h) since high school, but couldn’t talk to her then or in the present, until she comes into his office seeking help because she’s certain that someone’s trying to harm her. Jake sees this as the opportunity to finally get her, without even realizing that True crushed on him in high school too and feels like HE’S out of HER league. They were too cute with their internal thoughts (though I did sometimes want some of those thoughts to be dialogue vs. inner monologue). The mystery over who’s messing with True, Jake finally embracing the holiday spirit, and a quick relationship development round out the story.

Written in third person, dual POV. No ow drama, a tiny blip of om drama from the h’s ex, and both are experienced (h has been with a couple partners, including her ex husband, and no history given for the H). I was ok with them having been interested in each other since high school since this wasn't a second chance or a pining situation where one was frozen while the other wasn't. Both were likely with other people, though H didn't come across as a player.

I felt bad for True, who was just a really nice person and couldn’t understand why these awful things were happening. I liked that she was nervous about stepping outside of her comfort zone, yet she didn’t let that hold her back too much. True also was devoted to her community and I love when that’s built into a small town character. Jake was very protective and alpha. He also had some funny moments, like not knowing how to comfort her when she started crying or when he was asked to help True out at work by doing something completely out of his wheelhouse, filling in for Santa.

There’s a bit of background given on both, though Jake felt more fleshed out. Especially closer to the end when he gets two character references if you will that were some of the sources of the teary-eyedness because he’s truly a marshmallow under his gruff exterior. I also enjoyed the steaminess in this story even if I would have appreciated some dating first, like they discussed. These two have crushed on each other for a while though, it was time.

Like most Cynthia Eden suspenseful-type plots, there are multiple potential suspects so you’ll side eye pretty much every side character. The climax came hard and fast (lol) and everything’s wrapped up at the end nicely. Jake and True are happy and in love. There’s not a far out peek into their future but the ending was still enough to leave me smiling. And Jake finally got the girl he’d dreamed about, he wasn’t going to screw that up.

I loved this one!

It was a great balance of romance, suspense and a holiday themed story. I thought Jake and True were really cute. I liked that they both had crushes on each other when they were in high school. She was the valedictorian and he was the bad boy/joke type. I also like that True has always been his one and only (the one that got away). This was a great story to kick off the holiday season. The spice wasn't too over the top but still was very steamy.

This is my first book by CE so I look forward to reading more from her.

Start your holiday read marathon with this book, trust me, it’s everything!

I love when hero heroine knew each other when they were kids and was crazy about each other but never said anything. Jake was the perfect growly Alpha hero. To say he was gone for True is understatement of the century. We love an obsessed hero, we do!
Sweet and honest, True was such a lovely heroine. Their chemistry was 🔥.

I especially loved all the Christmas puns in this book. They were hilarious. Even though it’s short, there were so many amazing secondary characters in this book. Loved Jake and Tommy’s scene.

💯 recommended.

—Holiday romance.
—Obsessed alpha hero.
—Romantic suspense.
—They were classmates in past.
—Safe, TW and recommended.

I received an advance review copy and I’m leaving this review voluntarily.

The Ghost of Christmas Past had just walked her sexy self into his office.

Jake Hale blinked—then blinked again—because he was pretty sure that he might be hallucinating. Or dreaming. Yeah, this could be a dream. A really hot fantasy because surely there was no way that True Blakely had just walked her gorgeous ass into his bounty hunting office.

Jake Hale—big, surly, ex-military special ops turned bounty hunter—has had a crush on True Blakely since high school. She’s in his office because someone is trying to kill her, and she needs his help. “I need you” are the words Jake has fantasized about hearing come from her luscious lips for a long, long time so hell yes, he’ll help her…right out of her panties. This book doesn’t waste time on subtleties.

His dick saluted extra hard.

True’s been harboring her own secret crush since high school, in spite of an intervening marriage and divorce.

A kiss wasn’t supposed to feel like this, was it? Because if it was…oh, if it was, then she’d been doing it all wrong for years. Because a kiss had never, ever been this explosive. This body-melting. This—this panty-wetting.

Wet panties at 16%—not a new record but certainly respectable. And yet, oddly enough, this is not a cover-to-cover sexcapade. It’s almost tame, even.

In addition to the “who’s trying to kill True” mystery, the author throws in a perfectly delightful side plot of how Christmas-despising Jake, hater of trees, tinsel, twinkle lights, and carols, ends up with a 12-foot pine tree in his den and gets a Pavlovian bulge in his pants when he hears Jingle Bells.

Was this good? Not really. But it’s a rollicking, fun, goofy, frequently clever, sexy Christmas lollipop that manages to tickle a brain cell a time or two. I licked it and I liked it.

Holy crooked Christmas trees! Thanks to Jake and True, I’m never going to be able to think of sleigh bells and the word jingle without a physical reaction. As in getting hot and bothered!

The Christmas season would not be complete without a new holiday book from Cynthia Eden. It’s become a tradition and one that I eagerly look forward to. And Lord have mercy, there’s no better way to kick off the holidays than with a grumpy alpha hero that is anti Christmas and Jake was the very definition of such a hero. Watching him grow to the point of embracing all that represents the season, because of True, was sweet and precious. I fell in love with her along with him.

This has everything that keeps me turning pages. Along with the meltingly hot chemistry between True and Jake, there was the perfect amount of danger and drama. The humorous and heartwarming interactions between Jake and Perry were the marshmallows on my Christmas cocoa. This was the perfect kickoff to my holiday season!

This was a quick and cute read. I kind of wish it was fleshed out a bit more but I also accept that when insta-love is involved, there really isn’t much character development. I just would have liked to see them bond on a deeper level. Everything was focused on solving who was trying to hurt her. Although they knew each other in high school, they didn’t know each other as adults so it would have been nice to see their relationship develop.

But it was an enjoyable, fast paced story and I’m going to look into purchasing some more of the author’s books. She doesn’t have her books on KU and it’s pretty rare that I’m willing to pay outright for an e-book so that says something about how much I enjoyed her writing.

Safety: Totally safe. No mention of how long it’s been since MMC was with someone but he doesn’t come across as a manwhore. FMC is recently divorced and hasn’t been with anyone for a year and a half. No OW/OM drama. Her ex makes an appearance but she’s totally over him and makes it clear to MMC that she only wants him.

Holding Out For a Holiday Hero is a romantic suspense book with the emphasis on romance. By Cynthia Eden, I never doubted that True Blakeley was safe in the arms of Jake Hale. He was smart enough, tough enough and determined enough to keep her safe. No one does alpha males better than Ms. Eden. True was certainly smart enough too and learn the defense skills she needed.

Their story is one of high school crushes that came to fulfillment when they were older and more mature. It was also a case of doing the right thing can lead to danger. A holiday Scrooge type story, it was fun to see Jake’s opinion of Christmas transform. The only negative is all of the foul language, I grew weary of it. I do think a successful businessman such as bounty hunter Jake would have had more fitting words in his skillset. I have been reading Ms. Eden books for many years, the bad language has not always been so prevalent.

Thank you to Netgalley, Cynthia Eden & Hocus Pocus Publishing, Inc. for the ARC. All thoughts are my own.

This was such a fun holiday read! If you're a fan of "Die Hard" and arguing over the question if it's a Christmas movie or not, this book is for you. At just 185 pages, it's the perfect length for such a busy time of the year.

The story follows True (FMC) and Jake (MMC). When True believes someone is trying to kill her, she goes to the one guy she can trust, Jake. Oh, did I mention Jake has had a crush on her since he was 16? What follows is a book full of twists, turns, steam, and hilarious Christmas puns. And I love a hero who's secretly a cinnamon roll and that is 100% Jake.

This book is written in dual 3rd person POV and has no third act breakup. Honestly, that's one of my favorite things about romantic suspense. Many skip the foolishness and keep our couples together through all the danger.

A few of my favorite quotes:

"This is not a Christmas miracle. That is a Christmas homicide."

"Go big or go ho-ho-home, am I right?"

Adorably sweet holiday read, I loved Jake’s transformation as he works to keep True safe from a stalker.

Bounty hunter Jake Hale has been half in love with True Blakely since they were in high school. He hadn’t seen her in years so when she walked into his office and announced, ‘Jake, I need you’, he thought for sure he was dreaming. He wasn’t going to say no if the woman of his dreams was asking for him. Then, it quickly became clear True was actually in danger and Jake was going to do what ever it took to keep her safe.

True Blakely needs help. She knows she has a stalker, someone who wants her dead, but no one will listen or help her. So she goes to the man she knew in high school who is now a specialized bounty hunter with a perfect record. Jake is rough and tough and growly but he doesn’t frighten her. True knows there is a kind heart inside him. And she believes Jake will keep her safe.

Jake’s hate for Christmas is about to be tested when the holiday loving True Blakely spends several days with him as he works to keep her safe.

I received an ARC and freely offer this review.

True Blakeley is divorced and moved back to her hometown. She works at a museum and she can feel someone watching her. Someone tried to push her in oncoming traffic and some stuff almost fell on her in the museum. She has told the police but they think it’s her imagination so she goes to Jake Hale. Jake is former special ops and owns a bouncy hunting company now. He can’t believe his eyes when True walks into his office. They went to school together but they ran in different crowds. He tracks down bail jumpers and criminals not solve mysteries. But since he’s had a crush on her since high school, he takes her case. The attacks on her are real when they find a dead body under True’s Christmas tree. Jake is not the happily ever after type but for True he definitely wants one.

Action. Mystery. A “Scrooge”. Steamy. Great holiday story. A woman who finds her hero.

Holding Out for a Holiday Hero
Is a fun Christmas read!
Highly recommend it to get in the holiday spirit! Jake is a swoon worthy alpha hero who hates everything about Christmas and he is hired by a lovely funny True who has her house fully decorated and loves Christmas. Although Jake usually does other kind of cases he immediately agrees to protect True and investigate who is threatening her.
I loved the holiday atmosphere in the book and I always like suspense in a romance so I had a great time reading this!
I already know I will read it again next year at Christmas time!
I received this arc from the author and this review is my honest opinion

I love Cynthia Eden’s books, so when I saw she wrote a Christmas novella I had to get it right away! Since it is a novella, the romance moves quickly, but there is definitely a lot more to this novella. We get plenty of action, suspense, side characters and scorching spice! I couldn’t figure out who the villain was, that doesn’t happen often! Great little romantic suspense novella to get you into the Christmas mood!

Safety:
- No OW
- OM: H’s ex husband wants her back. He gets dealt with. No major drama.
- No cheating
- No separation / no third act break up

I did not find this a holly Jolly time.

True and Jake's relationship was over the top for me. Jake was too much the reformed "bad boy" and True was the onel "not like other girls". I found their interactions cheesy and unbelievable.

The one good thing was I wasn't alone reading this one. Thanks, Sis.

On to better things....

Christmas themed romance. Nice balance of romance and suspense and humor with a nice dose of spice.
Jake is a bah humbug type at Christmas. True comes to Jake's office (bounty hunter) because someone is trying to kill her but the police brush her off saying they were just accidents. Jake has had a crush on True since high school but feels unworthy of her.

I loved this book and was hooked from page one. Loved that Jake has always had a crush on True since he was 16. She’s back in town and is being stalked. Who wants to harm her? He’s quick to become her bodyguard and it turns out she had a crush on him too. It’s very hot and I loved them together. He’s so alpha protective. Loved being surprised by the plot and the ending was so sweet. I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy and I highly recommend this book.

I read two chapters of this and was so annoyed by the heroine. She comes to Jake for help because someone is after her and just instantly starts flirting with Jake. Also her damsel in distress act was just over the top and felt fake, especially for a woman who is supposed to be terrified. Since I am so annoyed already I am just going to stop here.

4* Ticks all the boxes

When the town’s bad boy gets together with the local good girl, expect fireworks.

True Blakely is frightened, she has a stalker and has experienced several unexplained and near fatal accidents, so she approaches Jake Hale requesting his protection. He’s a bounty hunter not a bodyguard. But her body is definitely on his mind and he’ll take the job just to spend time with her.

This is a light-hearted story, but who cares, it was so entertaining that I read it in one day.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HOLIDAY HERO by Cynthia Eden is a stand alone, contemporary, adult, romantic suspense story line focusing on former special ops soldier turned bounty hunter Jake Hale, and museum curator True Blakely.

Told from dual omniscient third person perspectives (True and Jake) HOLDING OUT FOR A HOLIDAY HERO focuses on the protection of our story line heroine. Approximately one year earlier, museum curator True Blakely returned to her home town in the wake of her divorce. Fast forward to present day True believes she has a stalker, and local law enforcement refuse to investigate in the wake of no solid evidence and a perception of coincidence. With no other choice, True contacts a former high school acquaintance, a man who knows how to track people down. Enter bounty hunter Jake Hale, the man with whom True will fall in love. Jake struggles with his reaction to the woman in question, the woman who controls all his fantasies and dreams but when they find a dead body under True’s Christmas tree, all bets are off, when Jake becomes True’s guardian, protector and happily ever after. Jake doesn’t believe himself a hero but he is the only line of defense between True, and the person taking aim at our story line heroine.

The world building focuses on the protection of True Blakely, and the search for a killer. Strange incidents , all placing True in dangerous situations, forces Jake to claim our heroine as his own but with no potential suspects , everyone in True’s radar becomes a suspect until the killer is caught. Jake has never considerer himself a hero but as he story line progresses, more than one person is witness to his true acts of heroism.

The relationship between True and Jake is an opposites attract. Jake dislikes the Christmas holidays, a Grinch by observation, and True is all about the decorating and celebration. Unable to return home, Jake demands True remain by his side, including staying at his place for the foreseeable future. A lifelong confession by Jake finds our heroine falling for the man who has stolen her heart. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

The secondary and supporting characters include several co-workers and security at the local museum, as well as over extended and over worked Detective Harris Avery, True’s ex-husband Richard, and Jake’s intrepid and eager professional assistant Perry Cornwell.

HOLDING OUT FOR A HOLIDAY HERO is a story of betrayal and vengeance, friendships and relationships, acceptance and love. The premise is intriguing, dramatic and captivating; the romance is passionate and seductive; the characters are desperate, charismatic and determined.

DNF at 30%

So many of this author’s books are on my Favorites list. Holding Out for a Holiday Hero, unfortunately, didn’t make the cut. For the first time ever, I DNFed a Cynthia Eden book.

Jake Hale, a bounty hunter, is pleasantly surprised when his teenage crush, True Blakely, walks into his office looking for help. True is convinced someone is out to harm her—she’s had too many near accidents in the past few days. Jake, of course, takes her case even though it’s outside his usual work. The next day, Jake and True discover a body under her Christmas tree, and he realizes the near accidents weren’t her imagination.

From the start, I had a problem with the characterization. Jake and True weren’t really friends in school, and from what it sounded like, they never even interacted. So, second chance? I don’t think so. Jake came across as crass, and True wasn’t far behind. It took a few “irritations” for me to finally throw in the towel.

1. Exaggerated actions: On the day they met (or reconnected, if you will), Jake tells True about his poor upbringing. True’s reaction? “She wasn’t inching toward him any longer. Instead, she nearly ran for him.” Why run? That’s far too excessive a reaction, which would have also been the case even if he’d been a close friend from her past
2. Overdone physicality: For two people who never exchanged a word during their school years, True was far too touchy‑feely—running, hugging, lips trembling. It was just overdone.
3. Too much too soon: After what must have been one hour together, True is prying into Jake’s life, asking if he has a girlfriend.
4. Near-virgin trope: Tied to the above, the near-virgin trope made an appearance (no indication if the same applied to Jake, at least not up to the point I read). True made sure that Jake knew she’d only been with two men—her ex-husband and someone else before that—and that it had been a “long” time for her.
5. Rushed relationship: The relationship was rushed. I’m not against insta-love at all, but in this case, we had the two of them planning to have sex on day one.
6. Crass dialogue: The banter between Jake and True was not sexy or sensual; they were crass.
7. Contradictory behaviour: Oh, we also had True “wanting” Jake but saying she’s not ready for that step, but she will be ready the next day. Huh?
8. Santa subplot: The final straw for me was the obvious ploy to get Jake to play Santa. It had no logic. Sure, all Santas were booked, but why not find another willing man—any man—rather than Jake, who was clearly reluctant? The author made it seem like Jake was the only man available, which simply wasn’t believable.

That’s when I stopped reading (at 30%). I like this author, and as mentioned, I’ve enjoyed some of her books so much that I’ve reread them. This one, unfortunately, just didn’t work for me.

Holding Out for a Holiday Hero is a fun romantic suspense and perfect for those bookworms who like a little bit of murder with their spice.

I am a huge fan of Cynthia’s books, so it only makes sense to start diving into her Christmas novels. Holding Out for a Holiday Hero is Cynthia’s latest holiday book, which was absolutely fabulous. She can really write a good dark serial killer or stalker romance story that will have you on the edge of your seat. For this book, we get a lighter version of a stalker plotline. It’s not as gruesome or as nail-biting as her other series, which isn’t a bad thing, in my opinion. We still get that sense of danger; there is a sprinkling of fast-paced moments, and the mystery element is interesting. But because this is a lighter novel, we experience more holiday humour and some pretty cheesy (and fabulous) holiday puns. It was really well balanced out and, overall, a really enjoyable read.

The characters in this book are pretty typical for a Cynthia novel. You have a smart, strong heroine who finds herself in a dangerous situation. True is a likable character, and I enjoyed spending time with her. Jake is the broody, protective alpha male who is a bit broken and believes that he doesn’t deserve True. There is just something about a protective alpha male that is pure cat nip for my soul. I can’t get enough of this type of hero. Both characters are great, and I enjoyed their interactions and watching them try to stay one step ahead of this mysterious stalker.

The romance is full of lusty tension and spice. Both True and Jake are harbouring pretty big crushes for each other, which they have had since they were teens. And they both think that there is no way the other person would be interested in them. That moment when they both realize that they have feelings for each other is delicious. This is a romantic suspense, which means that the character’s emotions are often running on high, and that heightened emotional state usually means that sexy times are bound to happen and happen a lot. I liked these two characters together. Their chemistry was great. I also thoroughly enjoyed watching Jake and properly date and woo True. It was endearing.

Holiday Out for a Holiday Hero is a easy breezy suspense romance that is sure to warm you up this holiday season.

Last night as I was lying in bed I was thinking about my review for this book, and it was so good. I knew that it was a mistake because what I write in my head away from the computer is always so much better than when I sit down in front it. I really need to stop doing that.

I always love a good holiday romance. It's my favorite time of the year and what better time for a new romance but during the holiday season. I really loved both Jake and True. I loved their relationship. Or the one that they are now started. These two might have gone to school together but it seems they didn't interact together at all.

What makes them perfect for each other is that in their own ways they didn't think they were good enough for the other. I love how the author handled their past feelings and how blind we sometimes are to what's there, but we are so insecure of our own feelings we don't act sometimes.

I also really liked they mystery within the story and what was going on. The hero and heroine worked so well together. You'll enjoy how a man who can't stand the holidays, for good reason for him, learned that the holidays aren't about what we get but more about the little things we do for us. I will say I know this was meant to be a series, but it was rude of the author to add two characters that make us wonder about them. We can always hope.

As soon as I read the complimentary first chapter, I knew that I HAD to read this book…and I loved it! Following her divorce, True Blakely has returned to her home town, Rosewood, Georgia, hoping to revitalize the local museum. She is barely home when she is threatened and believes that someone has been in her home. Reporting the incidents to the police hasn’t made her feel safe. Working in the museum she barely escapes injury from a falling exhibit; she needs help! She decides to contact former Special Ops and current bounty hunter, Jake Hale. She attended high school with Jake, but had never felt that he was interested in her. Jake is shocked to find her in his office; she says that she needs him…what?? He was always attracted to her, but with trying to support his mother and younger brother he kept those feelings to himself. He is determined to protect her, but will he be able to learn to tolerate or maybe even like the Christmas holidays? The incidents continue with the man in her home, under her tree, yikes! Moving her into his home, will he be able to keep her safe from her attacker? When her ex arrives in town, is he responsible for the threats against her? I don’t believe that I will ever think of “jingle” and “sleigh bells” in the same way – lol! I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (paytonpuppy)

So Cynthia Eden's Holding out for a Holiday Hero was my first read to kick off the holidays. I like to read the Holiday books the entire month of December.

This was a great book to start off with. I loved Jake OMG and True was made for him. Jake has been crushing on True since she was 16 so when a Ghost from the past walked into his office he thought he was dreaming. Especially when she said Jake I need you. Best line ever. Someone was after True and the cops didn't have the personnel and told her it could all be accidental until they found a dead body in her house. Yep dead as a door knob. Jake swore he wouldn't let anybody or anything harm her. She was his fantasy come true (LOL pun on words). There were parts of this story where we got to see into Jakes life. His assistant Perry spilled everything Jake did for him in front of True. His brother Tommy also spilled his heart out and also in front of True. Their stories where heart breakers but oh so good.
The real surprise I didn't see coming was who was after True and why. Cute little mystery suspense Christmas read. Do yourself a favor and grab the book.

I got this novella free from some authors I follow and while I don't usually like suspense type books, this novella was a perfect mix of funny, sweet, romantic, pining and drama. I appreciated that Jake and True knew each other from high school but have now reconnected as True needs Jake to help her find who is trying to hurt her. The dual POV really helped give me a full picture of their backstory and how they were both feeling. I loved that they both had a crush on each other back in the day and now that they are thrown together and the timing is right, they are getting a second chance. Jake is truly the grumpy grinch but how True makes him soft and his new hire and brother tease him is the best.

Great holiday novella that was different and will definitely pull at your heartstrings.

Holding Out For a Holiday Hero is an awesome standalone story that combines a second-chance-at-love romance with a mystery and suspense plot, featuring absolutely loveable main characters. Jake is a wonderful and admirable Cinnamon roll hero who believes he's bad but is soo good, while True has been considered the 'good girl' all her life but secretly wishes to be naughty. I loved the sparks, the references to my favourite Christmas play and all the page-turning action. A great addition to my keeper shelf and a book that will put everyone in the Christmas spirit.
As always, I am leaving this review voluntarily and honestly.
