Rate this book
How do you find the will to try, when you've spent all your life playing on a field strewn with shattered lives and broken rules?

Tragedy and betrayal taught Jenna Sutherland early on that her safest bet was to fiercely avoid any risk, whether it is in work, life, or love. Now a respected orthopedic surgical resident on the cusp of finally breaking through in her career, she’s more guarded than ever.

When injured NFL quarterback Wyatt McCoy bulldozes into her life there’s no denying he’s cocky, selfish, and downright dangerous — everything Jenna’s sworn she doesn’t want.

Suddenly the levelheaded doctor finds herself facing down her greatest fear, and she’s tempted to gamble all she’s fought so hard to build. The two embark on an intense holiday love affair that quickly teeters on obsession, and tempts them both to think they could go all-in on a real future together. Yet Wyatt's desperation to stay on the field — and out of the operating room — lures him to take dangerous risks with Jenna's trust.

Will they win at love or lose everything¬ — including their fragile chance at happiness?

Releases NOVEMBER 10, 2014

4 Belleza Stars

While City of Champions could be read as a stand alone novel, I'd highly recommend you reading book one of the series, Three Rivers, before diving into Wyatt and Jenna's story.

Chloe Barlow creates unique stories with engaging characters and diverse plots richly entrenched in the setting of her novels. The Gateway to Love series opens new doors for romance readers thanks to Barlow’s simple writing layered with character depth throughout the story. The fresh setting of Pittsburgh enhances the quality of these characters as the importance of family and community are not only vital parts to the magic of the city but also to the magic of Barlow’s characters.

City of Champions showcases two characters both wholly content in their lives – wanting simple pleasures, steadfast in their beliefs, loyal to their families, and dedicated to the perseverance and maintenance of their careers. Through the fluidity of the writing this author rewards the reader with complex character depth delving into feelings neither character expected. Wyatt and Jenna need something from each other. One much more vindictive than the other but both needing something to help their coveted positions. Through the coupling and needs we find a couple who’s engaging, smart, passionate, and funny. The thrill of this couple for me stems from the fun of the chase – the vulnerability they both come to find in themselves through the chase of the other. With a cat and mouse game they both play stolen glances, mischievous grins, and flirty play ingratiate the reader to both Wyatt and Jenna. As with the first book in the series, the comradery of the three woman in this book, the way they support, cherish and foster each other while being brutally honest through good times and bad – the reader feels every last feeling of the goodness they provide.

As my rating suggests, I really did enjoy this story. However, what didn’t work for me thusly effecting my overall rating come from the motivations of one of the main characters. As not to spoil the story, I won’t say who or what the motivations were but there comes a point when a reader needs to believe in the honesty of a character. For a big chunk of the story I questioned everything from this character and felt bad for the other. Since the story is told from dual points of view, I knew the workings inside their minds and what I saw made me question the integrity of the character as well as the value of the relationship because I couldn’t get past the outright deceit I kept feeling. After the conflict resolution, I understood better even I didn’t agree with the action. Had I believed this character had better intentions even when they started falling it could have been a five star book for me.

I still very highly recommend City of Champions. Chloe Barlow takes two characters scarred from their pasts yet very much living in the present and morphs them into people who continually grow and face change with admirable strength. The characters are put through tests of their fortitude in life and how each of them handles those tests endears them to the reader more. We learn more about the main characters from Three Rivers and become further intrigued with the next set of main characters starring in book three. I can’t wait to learn more about Wyatt, Jenna and the whole gang.

Try this author – her writing speaks volumes with well-structured plots taking you on a magic ride through the serene yet chaotic beautiful city of Pittsburgh.

I won an advanced reader's copy of this book in a contest. This review is spoiler free.

This book is deserving of more than 5 stars! It has to be one of the best, stunningly perfect books I have ever read. When I ugly cry in the prologue, yes the prologue, I know I am in for the emotional ride of my life!

This book delivers everything a reader of contemporary romance could want: smiles, laughter, tears, angst, love, romance, trials, tribulations, a strong female lead (Jenna), a bold male lead (Wyatt), fabulous secondary characters and the all important HEA ending.

Jenna and Wyatt's story strongly spoke to me and absolutely melted my heart. I found it extremely difficult to put this book down, and the twists, turns, and unexpected events kept me mesmerized on the edge of my seat.

Chloe Barlow writes in a way in which one can easily picture everything that happens. Her writing pulls you in, her words encircle you and while you read nothing else in the world matters. When the book ends you find yourself satisfied, happy, crying yet desiring more of Jenna and Wyatt. It's just that dang good!!!!!

Kudos to Chloe Barlow for presenting readers with a story they will long hold dear in their hearts as well as think about for days to come.

I absolutely "floved" City of Champions!!!!!! Read it! You won't be disappointed.

This is a powerful read which covers an emotive subject. It starts extremely painfully and had me sobbing during the prologue but the story as a whole is amazing and focuses on a passion for life, love and happiness.

The story covers the lives of Jenna and Wyatt, a QB and someone Jenna has been following closely during his career. Now struggling with a shoulder injury, Wyatt must reevaluate his priorities. Does he risk surgery and his career or does he find alternatives and hope they his team will support his decision but will they be able to continue to accept his reluctance to commit his heart to the game.

After an impromptu meeting, Jenna and Wyatt soon feel a mutual attraction but Jenna has been hurt before, badly, by someone who used her to impress her father, the coach of her High School football team. Wyatt knows he needs to get Jenna on side to convince his team that surgery isn't necessary but will he be able to convince her of his hopes and dreams both on and off the field.

The story continues with Wyatt and Jenna accepting their feelings for one another and whilst happily spending time together, Jenna is facing another battle and one she's not ready to share with Wyatt, her friends or even her father.

This is a brilliant book and one which pulls on your heart strings throughout the story. Every time you think this amazing couple look to be finding happiness, life knocks them back. Can Jenna trust her heart not to be broken again? Can she overcome the biggest battle of her life so far? Will Wyatt get to keep his team place without affecting Jenna or her career? You'll have to read the book to find out!

Next up in this series is Claudia and Trey's story, I can't wait!!!

*ARC provided for an honest review*

So afraid of loosing anyone she starts to love, Jenna distances herself from any kind of happiness, except for her best friends, Aubrey and Althea.

Making the move to Pittsburgh when Tea needs her, she starts work at the local hospital. Nothing will stand in her way of getting the fellowship in Orthopedics. Not ever a certain football player.

Wyatt McCoy, son of a great, wants to prove to Jenna that she can love. She thinks he's a jerk.
When a injury requires some care, Wyatt only wants Jenna to help.

He challenges her in every way. And I loved every. single. moment!

I loved these two together! They made me laugh, cry, swoon (Oh Wyatt) and love!

"You and me? We're going to happen, Doc. I'm not afraid to wait,
I'm pretty sure you'll be worth it."

Just when Jenna's walls start to crumble for Wyatt, something happens that makes her take another look at her relationship with him. But Wyatt has a person from his past messing with him, which starts to affect his future. My heart went out to Jenna. But Wyatt's love for her never fades. Get your tissues ready....you're going to need them!

"Is it ok if I think I love you?"
"Yes, it's okay. Because I think I love you, too."

Chloe, you just continue to amaze me! I loved Three Rivers so much, but City of Champions has taken it to a whole new level! I cannot wait to read whats next!

☆ I received an ARC via LBTS PR in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! ☆

City of Champions has become my new favorite read from this new series!! While I loved Three Rivers so much, City of Champions managed to secrete and fortify my fandom for Chloe T. Barlow’s writing.

In it, we re-meet Jenna, one of Tea’s best friends from bk1, who grew up around the sport of football and had later faced a harsh reality of life that irrevocably and completely altered her whole perception on things and herself; as well as a new character, Wyatt-- the cocky heart throb, football player who thinks that he is man’s gift to women but is more to the eye than he lets on.

Their road to love is one of a kind as both are very head strong but tainted individuals-- individually, emotionally, and career driven wise.

I really liked their interactions and exchanges with each other as they were honest and genuine to real-life people and reacted the way that anyone would have in their particular situations.

Ms. Barlow concocted definitely concocted the right pairing and blending of a duo as we got to see what made both of the characters tick and thrive and further develop as people and as a couple.

This book was the classic example of how opposites attract and prove that no matter how hard you try to fight it and pull away, you will always find your way back to each other no matter how much things can get tough or bad in life. You just are simply meant to be together.

#Love, loved this novel!! Can’t wait for more from this author!!

City of Champions! I've been dying for this book! And Chloe brings it in this book! It's 110% guarantee satisfaction!

Jenna is a strong will woman/doctor! Who has a hard time letting people in. Wyatt is the hot sexy quarterback/man who is hard to resist!
Jenna has put her walls up bc of failed relationships. Wyatt is the typical QB but he's wanting more. He peruses Jenna. Not only on a professional level but personal. Jenna won't fall to his hotness ways.

Wyatt needs Jenna to help him with his shoulder. She agrees to do so and only to keep a professional relationship. Once their time is over, Wyatt has told her he wanted more. Jenna denies it but secretly wanting it. Finally he has broken thru her walls

And when these two come together! WOW! Fireworks on the Fourth of July Hot!!! They are just explosive!

Jenna wants to be the stay a strong woman and Wyatt doesn't want her to be something she's not. He loves that she is this way.
But then something happens and their relationship is put to the test. The person you would least likely would be there is there for her!

My heart sank at this point. And I cried! (And it wasn't the only time). I wanted them to be able to fix it and to see them have their HEA!
When Jenna goes on a road trip to her fathers she doesn't expect to find what is waiting there for her!

Can Jenna and Wyatt get their HEA?!?
Absolutely one click this book! Love this book! I can't wait for the next one!!!

Chloe T. Barlow knows how to write good books but more importantly, she knows how to start a book with a bang! Once again, I was blown away by her skillful handling of the prologue. I was immediately drawn to the character of Jenna Sutherland; smart, strong, yet vulnerable. In walks Wyatt McCoy, who is cocky, good looking with a chip on his shoulder and thinking he could win Jenna easily. The interaction and dialogue between Jenna and Wyatt is steamy, sweet and at times, funny.

Intertwined in the main story is the relationship of the three good friends, Tea, Aubrey and Jenna and how they have each other's back and yet learn to relinquish a little of the closeness they have had for the past 5 years. Relationships evolve and change when one or more friends has a significant other but that does not mean the end of the friendship. We meet the familiar characters from Three Rivers and more are added that I am sure we will read about in the future. If you enjoyed Three Rivers, you will definitely love City of Champions. This book is due for release on November 10, 2014.

I just have to say that Three Rivers, Book 1 in the Gateway to Love series, is one of my top reads of 2014 and City of Champions is now on that list too!! I love this author, these characters and these books. The writing is outstanding and the relationships are so wonderful that I want to be friends with all of them. We met Jenna in Three Rivers and City of Champions is her story. Well, Jenna and Wyatt's story. Jenna is a doctor who comes face to face with a player she's followed since college. He's cocky, confident and a royal pain in her ass! Little does she know that Wyatt has set his sights on Jenna for more than her looks and his attraction to her. He's injured and needs a doctor. Jenna is smart, sassy and professional and she fights their chemistry until one day she just can't stay away from him. He's sexy and everything that she knows she should stay away from but his confidence, humor and determination win her over. She agrees to a holiday affair not knowing that he might have ulterior motives for wanting to be close to her. She throws in her whole body, soul and heart and isn't sure if she'll end up whole on the other side. The banter between Jenna and Wyatt is hilarious. I just love his smart ass mouth! Their spark is HOT! And, of course seeing Griffen, Tea, Aubrey, and TREY was a bonus! Sorry, I have a rather large crush on Trey (guess what? His book is next!) I laughed, cried, smiled, cursed, yelled, cried and laughed more! Will Jenna be able to trust Wyatt again? Will he realize his mistake before it's too late? Do NOT miss this amazing story!!

"Oh, the text. It's all coming back now. Unfortunately. Ugh, I can't even do a booty call right anymore. I really am a disaster." She threw the cover back over her head. "I can't believe I did that. If I didn't feel like I was about to die, I'd run and hide right now."

He stood and began to lead her out when she stopped short.
"What's that? Is that a guitar?"
"Yep."
"You play?"
"I do. I sing, too."
"You're kidding me."

"No. That's not happening. I want to look at you. I feel like I've wanted to look at you for forever. Fuck. I think you're going to make me go insane. I may have to lock you up here just so I can keep looking at you."

"Wyatt, your shoulder!"
"Fuck my shoulder."
"That wasn't really what I had in mind. I'm more interested in taking advantage of the rest of your body," she teased. "But I don't want you to hurt yourself more."
"I told you, it's not as bad as you think. Ow."
"Dammit, put me down, Wyatt, you're going to hurt yourself."
"Stop it, woman. I just banged my knee on the doorway while you were distracting me. Now, back to bed with you, you're talking too much," he said, on a low chuckle

He was just so beautiful, with his brown eyes, just barely flecked with hints of gold. His lips were curled into a smile, momentarily hiding how they were almost too full and soft-looking for a man — almost.
His hair was tousled and messy, making her want to run her fingers through it, perhaps to smooth it, or maybe to send it into further disarray. She hadn't yet decided.

"Enough. Please. Are you always this cocky and unserious?"
"Actually, if you asked most people that know me, they'd probably say I'm generally more of a grumpy asshole."
"So this is a rare treat you reserve for me?"
"What can I say, Doc? You bring out the best in me," he answered, with a smirk.

4.5 Champion Stars

This book was generously gifted by the author in return for an honest review.

This is the second book in the Gateway to Love Series from MS Barlow, this time with Jenna's story.

The prologue is Jenna's backstory and it is VERY profound. Her struggles as a little girl and then a teen define her very reasons for her guarded heart. I had my breath taken away with the truth of Jenna's past.

Wyatt has also had his share of struggles though very different from our heroine and also defining in how he has shaped his present persona in his profession. He is facing a major career crossroads and he feels he'll do what ever he can to protect his career and in turn provide for his family.

Jenna is called in to consult on his case and there is an instant pull between them. He feels it as quickly as she does but she wants nothing to do with an athlete. She's been burned before and vowed to never go down that road again.

Wyatt wears here down eventually and they decide to spend the holidays together for a mutually benefitting affair. Wyatt is quickly falling for his Doc but there are some complications that will be a true challenge to any real relationship. Jenna sees an expiration date to this affair and struggles to trust Wyatt fully. He's holding something back that may very well destroy this relationship before it ever gets to soar.

I know that there is some deceit in this story but Wyatt's friend tells Jenna a very important statement that becomes supremely telling later that he does stupid things that he truly feels are for the greater good but not always come out in the best light.

Doc and Wyatt's chemistry is amazing. Chloe really stepped up the heat between her love interests this story. Wyatt was a great mixture of and athletic alpha and a romantic artist. Her heroine was someone with conviction and a backbone of steel. She was a true professional and had a really soft side with her friends. I like a heroine who is strong without coming off bitch. Jenna was all that.

Will Jenna let her trust issues get in the way of a true lasting relationship? Will Wyatt's choices damage his chance at having it all?? Grab this book and see what happens, you will not regret it. This book will run the gamut of your emotions and you will come out of this story thankful to have experienced each turn of the page.

Happy Reading~ Sherry

In City of Champions the Second book of A Gateway Love Novel by Chloe Barlow..The emotional roller coaster she takes you on. It grabs you, and won't let go.

As Dr. Jenna Sutherland who is a resident of the orthopedic surgeon department is approaching a very important shift in her career she must keep a leveled head. The only thing is her boss feels she's lacking something? When her boss appoints her to review Wyatt McCoy's shoulder status it's not what she expected. She is a strong person who has a lot on her plate.

At a very young age having to deal with things yes some of us have dealt with, and working hard to where she has gotten. When she meets the NFL Quarter back for the Pittsburgh Roughnecks Wyatt McCoy whom she knows is notorious for getting what he wants things become very interesting.

So trying to establish boundaries between her professionalism status with her review of his shoulder, and his advances are getting harder and harder. He won't give up and she won't give in. His fate lies in her hands. He needs to make her see his way of thinking.

Wyatt and Jenna both have something in common neither knew. I think when reading you will see what that is. "Have faith in what you feel and what you want.
That's what feelings are there for. Life is a real asshole. It may give you something nice, but it will make that nice thing hard as fuck to keep.

The support comes into play and is so beautiful but a some key moments are stolen and not so good. If they can fight for what's truly important well that's the key. So take the journey with Wyatt and Jenna. I can tell you this much Chloe does't disappoint.

I love Chloe Barlow and this book was nothing short of amazing. The way you feel reading the characters you can relate with. The tight closeness between them is something warms my heart. For me that is what makes an excellent book. I rate this book far more the 5 stars..

Highly recommend this book, and also Three Rivers if you have not read that one. That too will grab at you.

Thank you Chloe you truly are a gifted writer and I can't wait for more books to come..

Every once in awhile you get hit with a book that you know you will never forget. Other times books can come and go. Well, City of Champions is a book that I will never forget! First off I fell in love with the Gateway to Love series and Chloe Barlow right off the bat with TR. (If you haven't picked up Three Rivers yet I suggest you do it now!! I mean what are you waiting for it's a sexy contemporary, cant ask for more than that?)

We first met Jenna in TR and she was the one friend who is level headed, loyal, and considers herself the strong one. The one who everyone leans on and has a hard time letting people in because they don't want them to worry. We all have that one friend. (Go give 'em a hug, they probably need it) That is why I love Chloe's style of writing. The characters are so real and the situations can happen in real life. She is the sexy doctor who has a very hard past that she can't let go of. She is letting it rule her life and not letting her have the connections she so desperately craves.

Wyatt was introduced in this book and I have to say I was worried how he was going to be able to handle our dear Jenna. And I really shouldn't have second guessed Chloe's ideas because they are always perfect. What i love about him is the way he can rile up jenna! He is also passionate only about her but is so focused on making sure his family is taken care of he jeopardizes the one he needs the most. He is the most sexy when he is being all alpha male and protective of the ones he loves.

The love between these two didn't happen overnight or it being instant. The lust and chemistry,oh yes, that was instantaneous! Their love grew over the holidays and will only grow stronger with time. I cannot wait until the next one, to see more of Jenna and Wyatt and it also has MY man Kristina! :P It is a surprise so you will just have to wait and see! ;)

If you read my Three Rivers review which is the first book in this series. Than you know how happy I was to be able to review these books. After reading Three Rivers I had high hopes for this book and author Chloe Barlow doesn't disappoint. She's starts City Of Champions off with a bang with Jenna and Wyatt's dry sarcastic sense of humor towards each other.

I loved Jenna's character in Three Rivers. She was such a great and loyal friend to Althea. To drop everything and move to Pittsburgh to help her Althea and help with Althea's son Johnny. Jenna's still a great friend and loyal in this book. And is very independent in her career and knows what she wants. Though she is a little bit stubborn in this book. Though there is one thing in this book that bothers me with Jenna. She likes to keep secrets from people.

Hmmmm Wyatt, Wyatt, Wyatt.... Wyatt was kind of a difficult character for me figure out at first. I wasn't sure if I should love him or hate him. He's kinda cocky and definitely self assured. At the same time there were times where it seemed like he only cared about himself. Which of course is understandable. Though he does redeem himself by the end of the book.

Again these two, Jenna and Wyatt, have instant chemistry between them. And author Chloe Barlow weaves us through a story that has half truths, lies and friendship. It's nice that she brings back the other characters throughout the story. Did I mention the chemistry between Jenna and Wyatt is off the chart hot!!!!

I give City of Champions 4.75 Stars Out of 5 Stars and would recommend it. Also if you've read Three Rivers you will enjoy this book. I can't wait to read the next book this series.

CofC is a game winner!
This book is one to go on the shelf of future re-reads. After reading and loving book 1 of this series, Three Rivers, I was anxious to see what the author would do with Jenna and her story; I was not disappointed! City of Champions was more than I could have hoped for: Wyatt is a super-sexy quarterback in the NFL, and Jenna is a no-nonsense, sweet doctor. When these two strong people meet, personalities clash and intense attraction surprises them both.
As I've come to expect from this author, she has brought the feels! The prologue had me tearing up, and then right away laughing out loud in chapter one. All of the characters, primary and secondary, bring so much to this smartly written story that is far more than just a "boy meets girl" read.
I have major love for Wyatt; he is such a great character. He does all the wrong things for all the right reasons. And while Jenna is compassionate with Wyatt, sister does not take his crap! Jenna is far too much a lady, and too kind, to be rude, but she does not allow Wyatt's alpha personality to alter her actions or decisions when she's in the right.
The sexual tension between the H/h is in-tense, and their steaminess fogged my glasses! I'm fanning myself just thinking of the closet scene. And the tub scene. And the... Well, you'll just have to read it, because seriously, everyone *needs* to check this book, and this series, out! They have quickly become favorites for me.
I want to grab every person who looks at this book and shout, "READ THIS! Give it a go - you'll LOVE it!"

I was gifted this book for an honest review. I was suprised by the first book by Author Chloe T. Barlow, but this one was just WOW, I loved it. We meet Jenna Sutherland or Dr. Sutherland who is guarded and only lets the people she is close in. Then we meet Wyatt McCoy NFL quarterback and his crazy funny attitude that, I loved about Wyatt. I love how these two acted around each other, but I could feel the chemistry between them it was hot. Then when they finally give in to it, I'm going to say it was HOT. I love this book in so many ways, but we have a love, an awesome storyline with some drama and just something we all could relate to. I felt the pain of Jenna went through as as child with her loss, but to go through it all over again it had me crying. Jenna was a strong woman and any woman that has gone through this it's hard. I'm not going to lie at times, I so wanted to hit Wyatt for the mistakes he made, but who he hurts along the way. I can't wait for Author Chloe T. Barlow will do next, because she has taken me by suprise that she found a new reader and fan in me. Throughout this story, I could feel the pain in these characters went through. I love a book you can read that it goes so smoothly that you're reading the story and times flies by. This was that kind of a story. Please if you're thinking about getting this book don't think just get it. I promise you will not be disappointed after reading this story.

Jenna is so afraid of losing those she loves, she shuts down any type of feelings she may have for anyone, except for Tea and Brey, her BFFs.
She runs from a bad situation dealing with her father and ex-boyfriend.
She makes it to Pittsburgh to help Tea through her time of grief and to help with Tea's son.
She wants the fellowship in Ortho.
She meets Wyatt, a pro football player, and he is calling her out. She thinks he's an asshole and he thinks she is just playing hard to get.
But all bets are off as he persists and she finally gives in little by little.
The past has a way of catching up and Wyatt's is the sportswriter, Olivia, who just happens to set him up.
He loses Jenna but is trying to figure out Olivia and why she did it.
He finally catches on and gets Jenna's best friend, Trey, to help him.
They can finally put Olivia and a past of Jenna's, Chase to rest and in jail.
She has her scare of lumps in her breast but it comes out all negative.
He does all he can to get near her and he does it through her dad.

Love this book, keep the Kleenex handy for the prologue and after the first half of the book.
Chloe does situations that you can believe really happened.
Waiting impatiently, :) , for the next segment. <3

I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for C of C. I read and reviewed the first book in the series Three Rivers also. I must say that I really enjoyed Three Rivers, but I loved City of Champions! I don't want to give the story away so I will be brief.

Lets start with Jenna. Jenna goes through a lot of heartache as a young child. Her father is a well respected football coach and Jenna spends a lot of time with her father, therefore falling in love with the sport. She was a quiet girl that had her future all planned out. Until something flipped her life upside down and made Jenna become a different person. Throughout the book I loved Jenna's strengh. She always knew what she wanted. Now Wyatt.......I adored Wyatt! He is a sexy half Latino professional football player working extremely hard to support his family. I love Wyatts heart and his fire. When Wyatt first meets Jenna there is an obvious attraction but Wyatts intentions are not good (you will see why) and Jenna has built a giant wall over the years. Can Jenna and Wyatt overcome the many obstacles they face? Is love always enough? Don't ask me, you will have to read the book to find out :) I can't wait for the next book by Chloe Barlow!

This is the second book in the Gateway to love series.
This is Jenna's story. Jenna Sutherland
has a really sad past, not only for what happened when she was a little girl, but from someone else abusing her trust. She decided that the best thing she could do was to avoid any risk and concentrate on her job, working hard to try to obtain the fellowship in orthopedics.
What she didn't count on was meeting Wyatt McCoy, a hot, cocky and charming NFL quarterback. He needs something from the beautiful Doctor and he won't stop at anything to get what he wants.
They are attracted to each other, and even though they both try to stay away, finding excuses and lying to themselves, eventually they give in and have an holiday fling.
What started out as casual begins to change when Jenna finds out that her biggest fear is not stuff of nightmares anymore.
Right when you think things are starting to look up..bang..a twist will bring you to your knee!
I swear, Chloe Barlow knows how to make you feel for the characters, whether is happiness or sadness, grief or heartbreak..you can't read this book without feeling everything they go through.
Another must read!!!

Where to begin.. Ah yes! The beginning! Just Wow! I haven't had a story reach and grab me that hard in a long time. I was in from the first page to the last. (Just so others know, that's rare for me) I cried, I got so angry at both the H/h for their actions. I don't know if I should even begin to talk about the explosive closet scene.. Yummy! Oh and this book talks about two, count em, two.. Very touchy subjects and wouldn't ya know the release of this book is going to be in the same awareness month as one of those subjects! I have read hundreds of books recently and only two books(this being one of them) have talked about one of them. This subject is very "close to home" for me. Chloe dives right in with the emotions of the characters. It is so hard to explain the worry and concern and panic during certain times with this issue. Chloe "nailed it" when she describes the situation at hand and it was really impressive how she placed the characters in the roles of protectors and showed the stress and worry.. That's all I am going to say.. Read it!! It is awesome!!!

City of Champions delivers on all the feels, sexy times, and suspense you expect from Chloe Barlow.
The book introduces us to Wyatt, football star and family caretaker, who meets Jenna by coincidence with her best friend from Book 1. What follows is a chase for love that neither felt deserved or had the time for, and that’s what makes it that much sweeter through the trials and tribulations. Wyatt is cocky and hard headed when it comes to his career and taking care of his family. There were times I may have wanted to slap him for being an idiot with Jenna. But, then he’d make up for it with sweet times unexpected by someone jaded by love. Jenna was just as stubborn, and their headbutting made for some angsty, sexy, and sometimes funny interactions. Plus, we get to see all the main characters from the previous book and it was great to catch up and delve further into their development.

As a male, it was a battle to get through the prologue without letting the growing need to cry like a baby break through. I kind of did it, but only because nobody spoke to me or distracted me from my 100% focus on getting through it without letting the quivering lip turn into streaming tears. Luckily that only happened a couple more times in the book. But it was a great emotional rollercoaster.

After the beautifully written prologue flashback, we get to go back into world of Chloe’s characters that we know and love, and meet new entertaining and intriguing characters as we go. I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but I loved the tricks and turns throughout the book. As with Three Rivers, the action is paced really well, and there are many times when you just can’t put the book down.

I can’t wait for Steel Town!

Chloe Barlow did it again! This book made me feel extremely excited, sad, thrilled, horny and hilarious - I felt all these feelings reading this beautiful story. Jenna and Wyatt are so hot together and apart as well. If you like romance, sports, family drama and beautiful storytelling then you must read this book! The chemistry between Jenna and Wyatt is so palpable I thought my hands were burning from the sizzling. This book is a stand-alone, but I recommend reading the first book in Chloe's Gateway to Love series - Three Rivers because it multiplies your reading pleasure! Five plus stars to my favorite author!

Sorry

This book hit me like it was written by someone immature with a lot of knowledge about sex and cursing. The dialogue was very predictable and monotonous. It's kind of like a soap opera where you are saying oh come on. Skipped a lot of pages won't follow this author.

I won a contest and received an ARC of this book. I loved the first book in the series, so I was excited to read this one. The book starts on a sad note. I mean, I can’t remember if I have ever read a book that had me ugly crying in the Prologue. Yes, the prologue. So I knew that this was going to be a good read and it did not disappoint.

We first met Jenna in the series’ first book, Three Rivers. Her path in life has been shaped by the events in the prologue and she has become a successful orthopedic surgical resident. She has avoided taking any kind of risk in all aspects of her life, especially when it comes to love.

Then she meets Wyatt McCoy. He’s a cocky, sexy football player who thinks that he will be able to make Jenna see things his way. She gives him a diagnosis that he does not want to hear and sets out to change her mind. Despite his ulterior motive, he quickly falls for Jenna. And despite her life of not taking risks, Jenna throw caution to the wind and quickly realizes that she is falling for Wyatt. Unfortunately, things do not go as planned and Wyatt and Jenna’s relationship is put to the test.

I loved Wyatt. Even when I was extremely disappointed in him I couldn’t help; but feel sorry for him. The author wrote his character in way that made you want to cheer for him and hope that everything would work out in the end. I could list all the sexy, sigh worthy parts that I highlighted but then this review would be VERY long. I will just say that it will take a lot for any of the other men in this series to dethrone Wyatt as the swooniest one of all.

One thing that I really enjoyed about this book was the changing dynamic between Althea, Aubrey and Jenna. Their lives taking very different paths and the author was able to portray those feelings in a very realistic way. I related to Aubrey and the feelings she was having because I have gone through/am going through the same type of situations. It’s not very common for a book to tackle this subject and I’m happy that this book did.

Another thing that I liked best about this book was that we got know a little but more about Trey. He becomes a great friend to Jenna and is there for her when she shuts out everyone else. This book just made me even more curious about him and thank god his book is next! We get a sneak peek let’s just say that Trey will have his hands full.

I am a life long Pittsburgher and a Steelers fan. We've not always come out ahead in the QB category, but we've got a winner now. I will say this: He is no Wyatt Alejandro McCoy. No QB alive looks as good as he does (no matter whose imagination is going there. . . ) On the other hand, orthopedics is a demanding specialty in the land of 4 professional sports teams plus universities plus colleges plus high school plus midget and instructional leagues. So my expectation for a contemporary romance set in my hometown is pretty high if it deals with two of our specialties: sports and sports medicine. With City of Champions, Chloe T Barlow has gone beyond those expectations by providing readers not just with a beautiful romance between two heartbroken people, but in giving them challenges that would easily overwhelm any average individual, let alone two who are trying to build a private relationship in a public world.
Here is what I love about Chloe's books. Her intelligence shows in her writing--a practicing attorney, she knows the law and she knows how to put words together to paint the picture. I love the depth to her characters. To be honest, this lady knows worry and pain, and she doesn't shy from letting her characters feel those emotions. That means she is brave--her heart is in every word she writes, allowing us all to know not just the characters, but Chloe as well. She can spin a tale--just when you figure out that the story will resolve itself, it simply doesn't. It twists one way or the other (you have to read it to find out which way), and her readers are always surprised. So often, when a series begins, we focus so much on the characters in Book One that we can't imagine anyone better. Not here, from the prologue to the epilogue, we loved Jenna and Wyatt, and still rooted for Griffen and Tea (from Three Rivers) and anticipate the future for Aubrey and Trey and Baxter and Carol (who needs to shut up). I am so proud that Chloe T Barlow wound up here, that she loves living here and adopted our city as if she was born here, and that she tells our story so much better, I think, than any of us could.

4.5 BELLEZA STARS!!!

I was soooo damn glad that finally I could get to have Jenna's story. We met her in Three Rivers as one of Tea's bestfriend. And I know for sure everyone who  get read the book definitely loved those two bestfriend of her's. I AM ONE OF THEM. Who wouldn't right? The author just described them and play a role for them in the story that we can't resist to love.
So, Jenna's life story is not what I thought it woud be, with a past that taught her to avoid risks in different aspects she get to gamble what she always fought and sworn she doesn't want in the peak of her career after an undeniable chemistry they have with NFL quarterback Wyatt Mccoy who more than anybody else was desperate to stay out of the operating room. When everything they thought seems to be okay, comes a barrelling storm  that tested what they have...

"Gunslinger McCoy Romances His Own Doctor in Desperate Ploy to Stay on Team."

Go figure...

Chloe Barlow really did not disappoint her readers. With this next installment, City of Champions I have nothing to say when I started reading the book except "kill me now because her work just keeps getting better".
Saying her debut novel as heart wrenching, I do not know how to describe this book because really, this is more than just heart wrenching. Right from the start, I was hooked and keeps fighting back tears so I wont mess what just I started reading. Her style and tone of writing will definitely affects you straight to the heart without hesitations. The moment I read this book, I never did stop or pause except on occasional funny moments and that near to the end scene that I can't force myself not to cry because hell, I was surprised what i just read. Seriously, this is really more than what I thought this book would be. Again, I'll say it is another great book of her's...another great story...another worth reading one of a kind book that keeps getting better and better as your read progresses.

Great job!

Jenna is a orthopedics doctor specializing in Sports Medicine. She loves her job but not the athletes so much. However this may cause her the spot in the fellowship. After meeting Wyatt McCoy "the gunslinger", she is determined to do everything in her power to stay away from him because athletes in her opinion are no good and he tends to make her want to be with him. After her visit with her doctor for her yearly checkup however she finds out that she has lumps and will need surgery to get them removed, afraid to tell anyone, she's been keeping this a secret. The more time she spends with Wyatt the more she wants to be with him and she's finally decided to let herself be happy.
Wyatt is terrified of surgery, his grandfather when he was younger died during open heart surgery and he's always afraid that something is going to go wrong. However his shoulder is really bad and he's trying everything in his power to make sure that he does not have to get that surgery I can still continue on his career in the NFL. Sweet talking the beautiful dr Sutherland he thought would be very very simple, so that he can get it approved that he did not have to have surgery. However the more he got to know Jenna the more he liked her and wanted to be in a relationship with her, he hated that he was lying to her about why they had met, but he really needed the security of taking care of his family. When all the things that are going on in their lives come to a head will Wyatt's secret ruin what they have or will Jenna be able to forgive him in the end?

This book was amazing it had me in tears throughout different parts of it so many times that I had used an entire box of Kleenex is the prologue alone made me fall so hard that I had to put the book down because I couldn't see. I really recommend this book and I love this author. Chloe knows exactly what she's doing when she writes her books.

MICHELLE'S REVIEW

We finally have Jenna and Wyatt's story. Gotta admit lovers- I was waiting for this one ever since I heard Wyatt was a sexy quarterback. I have a thing for footballs players. Like a major thing. I enjoy them. A lot. And Wyatt is a Mexican- Irish football player. I don't even know how to process that. All I know is that I like it.

Let me warn you that the prologue- dear sweet Jesus. I started reading this in an airport and had to stop because I was having to force myself to stop from crying during that prologue. You know how you have to hold back tears because you're in public? Yea that was me.

It was embarrassing. So be warned. It's an emotional one. And it sets us up for meeting Jenna and it makes what happens in the book all that more emotional.

Jenna is no nonsense, career focused woman. After getting badly burned by a football player in high school she chooses to steer clear of them all together- at least socially. She can't avoid the fact that she works with them in her day job as a doctor.

Wyatt is someone who you think will be a playboy but he's actually a great guy who plays football less for the love of the sport and more for the money it brings him to support his mom, abuela and sister. Can you say swoon??

But somewhere along the way- he lost his love for the game and the only thing that matters is preserving his career. Unfortunately, this causes Wyatt to make some stupid choices when it comes to courting Jenna. Jenna on the other hand holds back herself because of her past but decides to give Wyatt a chance.

Jenna wants to fix and help everyone else but struggles with truly letting people in and help her. Even the friends she loves like family. She starts to let Wyatt in but she also didn't share that Wyatt was in her life until it comes barreling out in a series of events. She sometimes drove me crazy. But everything she did, every choice she made had purpose and I could see that.

Wyatt is in no way perfect. He makes big mistakes and they catch up to him. But when he redeems himself- watch out.

Chloe Barlow really knows how to make her characters real. They're real people who deal with things the way we would.

I've been single for 6 years so I could never turn a man away if he was groveling like Wyatt does. Basically at this point- I just want a man with a pulse. But I can understand why Jenna reacted the way she did because she was hurt. And even if her actions frustrated me at times- I could see where she was coming from. But if any Mexican-Irish football players want to grovel for my love- I am available.

Anyways...

One thing I really loved about this book is the way in which Wyatt redeems himself. This is a man on his knees giving everything he has to win the most important play of his life. And it's amazing.

This is a great book that's part of a great series that you should definitely pick up. Well written, emotional with touches of humor and likeable characters- City of Champions is a winner.

City of Champions is the second book in the Gateway to Love Series. Although it can be read as a standalone, because it centers around a new couple, I would suggest reading Three Rivers first. This was a much different read than Three Rivers. Where Three Rivers has elements of suspense and mystery, City of Champions is a straight out sports romance. If you love football, you will definitely love this book!

The series centers around three close friends living in Pittsburgh - Althea (Tea), Jenna and Aubrey. City of Champions is Jenna's story. Her mother dies of cancer when she is a young girl and she is raised by her football coach father. She spends most of her childhood on the sidelines helping him, so she knows more than your average female does about the sport. She is also a star athlete herself, getting a Basketball scholarship to Duke, but blows out her knee in her Junior year. Thankfully she is able to continue on at Duke and eventually graduates from Medical School with a specialty is Orthopedic Surgery. You would not classify Jenna as warm and fuzzy. She's very clinical and can be standoffish and extremely hard headed. When she applies for a fellowship at the hospital she learns that she needs to not only treat the whole athlete, but she has to treat the "person" too, in order to get ahead.

Wyatt, is the star Quarterback of the Pittsburgh Roughnecks. He's had his own issues, living in the shadow of his deadbeat dad who was a star football player to the world, but in reality, was a gambler, who lost all his money and abandoned his family. Wyatt now feels the burden to support his sister, mother and grandmother. Wyatt has a reputation for not being a "team player". He now has a shoulder injury that is making the situation worse as he not only fears that he will lose his spot on the team, but that he will never live up to the success of his father. Surgery is not an option for him.

The Roughneck's management is forcing Wyatt to get a consultation to see if he needs surgery. This would put him out for months and he would likely not get back on the team as a starting QB, or back on the team at all. Both of their 'situations' are the perfect opportunity to take advantage of the other to get what they want. Jenna now has a well know patient that she can treat as a person, to help gain the fellowship, and Wyatt thinks he can use his good looks and personality to sway the hot doctor into not suggesting surgery. There is definitely a lot of angst and misunderstanding along the way as Jenna constantly pulls away from Wyatt, and Wyatt relentlessly pursues Jenna (but it feels like for all the wrong reasons). Thankfully they come to their senses along the way, although Jenna is so hard headed that she can't even tell her friends for some time.

Along the way they also face other challenges, as a person from Jenna's past pops up and she is also delivered some upsetting news about her health. It was sweet to see that Wyatt really does care for her and wants to be there for her through these crises. Although he comes across as a player, and she comes across as tough, they both do have a sentimental and kind hearted side.

If you love sports, a sexy, yet hard headed doctor and a hot alpha sports star, then City of Champions is the book for you! I'm looking forward to the next in the series, A Steel Town, releasing in Spring of 2015, which centers around Wyatt's sister, Claudia, and Jenna's friend, Trey. This was another great addition to the Gateway to Love Series!

Usually when I read the next in a series, I re-read the previous books, especially when it’s been a while since I read them. But with City of Champions, book 2, in Chloe T. Barlow’s Gateway to Love series, I didn’t re-read the first one. I just jumped right in. And I’m so glad I did. It felt a bit like coming home. Visiting with friends and remembering why I love them some much.
I think one of the best things about this book is that it feels so real. Real problems. Real issues. Even Wyatt and his issues in football are very real. And very much in time with current events. And living in the Pittsburgh area, very much a Pittsburgh football player.
The beginning of the book killed me. That prologue. Heartbreaking. But it definitely set up the rest of the book. It showed why Jenna is, the way she is. But to be 6 and go through all of that. And then to have more shit happen to her in high school. And turn out the way she is, amazing. She is so strong. She has gone through so much but has come out on top.

Wyatt hasn’t had an easy life either. It was hard but in a different way than Jenna’s. He had a legacy to live up to and then he had to be the man of the house. And he still feels he needs to keep those roles.
But Jenna and Wyatt coming together is meant to be. The problems that they had when they were younger make them cautious. It makes them take their time. But with Jenna, her past and her present are colliding and that helps her make the jump to take a chance with Wyatt. And it’s the same with Wyatt. His history makes him pursue Jenna.

The one thing I love so much about Chloe’s books is that, she lives in Pittsburgh and you can tell through her writing. That keeps her books real. She also takes real life issues and doesn’t dramatize them. Yes, there is drama in her book. Yes, she made me put down my iPad and walk around in circles saying “Oh my god, holy shit” for a few minutes when a twist I wasn’t expecting happened. But her characters are so real. The settings are so real. Everything that happens in City of Champions, you could see happening in real life. This is a love story that you could see happening
.
This is a can’t put down, must keep reading all night until you fall asleep and your iPad hits you in your face type of book. A book where your kids start to love the author and they get to stay up late because mommy can’t put it down type of book. It grabs you. Keeps you wanting more. And when it ends, messaging the author asking why you have to wait until spring to hang out with them again type of series. And those are the best type.

~Katie
