X-Men meets Spy Kids in the sixth installment of The Forgotten Five middle-grade fantasy/adventure series by the New York Times bestselling author of The Unwanteds.
Only weeks remain before the election that will decide the fate of supernaturals in Estero, with presidential challenger Magdalia Palacio in the lead. And now the location of their safe house has been discovered, and the five and their friends are on the run.
With their identities revealed to the world, the kids must master the art of disguise to move freely about Estero, including infiltrating an upcoming Fuerte campaign event at the Estero City Zoo. But the other side is willing to play dirty, so the five will have to be ready for anything.
Meanwhile, Cabot’s parents, who have been acting as double agents for years, dare to cross the president and are arrested, leaving them unable to share critical Fuerte has a new super on his team with the power to change the course of the election—and no one will see it coming until it is too late.
Lisa McMann lives and writes in the Phoenix area. Her newest middle grade fantasy series is called The Forgotten Five. Book one, Map of Flames, was an instant NYT bestseller. It's about five supernatural kids, raised in a deserted hideout, who enter civilization for the first time to search for a hidden stash left behind by their missing, criminal parents.
Book two, The Invisible Spy, is on sale now! Book three, Rebel Undercover, is coming summer 2023, and book 4 will be out in spring of 2024.
Also out now: CLARICE THE BRAVE. It's a story of hope against all odds, about sibling mice who get separated in a mutiny and vow to find one another again.
Lisa's other books include the NYT bestselling THE UNWANTEDS and UNWANTEDS QUESTS series, the GOING WILD trilogy, the YA paranormal WAKE trilogy, the VISIONS trilogy, CRYER'S CROSS, DEAD TO YOU, and INFINITY RING: The Trap Door.
Dang, I’m not the first written review this time around. That just means I have to read the next one ASAP. Like I’ve said in the previous books, the adult characters and their stories keep me intrigued the most. The kids are cool, but as I age, the adult motivations really keep me going. And we added some new interesting characters this book with Vince and Viviana! I loved them and their kids a lot. I love seeing the new super abilities and how they get added to the ever growing team. Seeing them all work together was satisfying.
Slight spoilers: -Martim actually getting evicted was kind of funny and I was so shook lol. -I didn’t know I needed Troy eating chicken nuggets until I got said scene. -Troy giving Tenner a piggy back ride healed something in my soul I didn’t know needed to be healed. -I loved what we got to see of Greta and Jack finally. Marriage goals honestly. I hope they get out of their situation in the last book. That would be a good ending. -The ENDING!! How are they going to overcome that?! Lisa WHY?!
I could go on and on clearly. I think fans of the Unwanteds should totally read this series, and fans who don’t are missing out big time. I can’t wait for the last book in the series. I’m scared someone is going to die though. Lisa loves to do that in last books. I am preparing for the worst lol. Seriously can’t wait though!
This story progresses the plot so much. The Zoo is not only a mission that held significance it had creative flair and gave each and every character the spotlight. Lisa McMann balances giving each character attention masterfully. The story also leaves so many questions for readers to speculate about. What is the Five's next move? What will happen during Greta and Cabot's call? Who is Hector (is he related to the Stone's)? Another thing I can appreciate is that Hector's ability is introduced early. Think about it, the intern when searching for information on the new super he listens to exactly what the guard says, he quits his job and leaves the palace. That guard he talks to is Hector. Finally, I need to share plot holes that could happen in the next book if not prevented. One, not everyone will watch the poles some may just check a website (specifically a photo not just an Article since the author of it will be wrong). Two, Cabot is smart so I hope that she can summon her green eyes and convince her team the they got duped. Three, eventually Hector's influence will run out and when people look at the poles again they will see the truth. Hopefully these will be prevented.
Overall this book is written perfectly and has so much amazing content!
Low four stars. While not a standout book (or series), this was a lot of fun!
I love Lisa McMann’s writing style. Her books are always easy to read and simple, while still remaining complex enough to be interesting. This book was no exception and was super easy to binge-read. While I do think her writing relies a lot on telling, which can sometimes be a detriment to the story, for the intended audience and for the story she is telling in this series, I think it works well enough.
The plot is definitely the main draw of this series, and this book. Seeing all the supers come together and hone their powers to defeat Fuerte and his team is incredibly satisfying, even when the story gets a bit repetitive from previous installments. I can’t emphasize enough how fun this book is. It’s nice to read something that’s just good, exciting middle-grade adventure. I think this book in particular was a bit slow on the action, but not in a bad way. I was never bored, and the climax was exciting enough, even if the stakes didn’t feel all that high. I also really enjoyed the Jack and Greta plotline, since it was high time we shed some light on their motivations and story. I am very excited to see how the next (and final) book handles the plot twist of the ending.
I’m not even going to try to talk about all the characters in this one; there are just way too many. But I will say that this book definitely glosses over real, deep character development in favor of small, surface-level arcs that are usually told instead of shown. And while that would normally be a very bad thing, with the way this series is written, the level of storytelling it has, and the sheer number of notable characters that need some notable trait to them, I think it was actually pretty good. The are some really mature conversations in this series about familial relationships in particular, and I love how this book continues portraying those in a complex, healthy way. I like how each character interacts with the others in unique ways, even if it’s only for a scene or two. The only few that I thought needed more to them in this one were Superfly, Caliro, and the Collazo family. I don’t think we’ve gotten enough time with them for them to feel like anything other than random extras. I hope the final installment spends more time with them.
Martim was an okay physical threat to the group for this one, but he wasn’t that intimidating in actuality, more so in how willing he was to treat Seven so horribly. I said in my last review that I want Fuerte’s team to win a few rounds, and while they definitely won in this book, I’ll extend that to say that I hope they’ll pose a physical threat to the group as well as political. Otherwise, the stakes don’t feel as high as I think they should.
Overall, a pretty great book 6 to this series. I’m excited to read the conclusion when book 7 comes out!

Probably my least favourite in the series so far (although the climax saved it somewhat). My main criticism is that there are far too many characters as part of the main cast, not to mention every time the story cuts to other characters as well. This book's plot also felt like it wasn't heading in any specific direction until the climax began. I'm glad that the next book will be the last.
These cliffhangers! My goodness! My kid and I both said "What?! Noooooo!" at the abrupt end. This series is decent and can have some intense, high stakes. However, in between the action, this book felt slow, but maybe that's only because I'm an adult. I saw the big twist coming from a mile away.
I’ve been reading this book pretty much nonstop and I have to say, it has almost no room for the reader to take a breather, it just keeps pummeling you with plot twists and sudden changes in the story. It feels kind of like riding a plane through a storm. Great cliffhanger at the end, too!
This is the sixth book in one of the BEST series! I've read alot of Lisa McMann books and they are all amazing. The Going Wild series is also so great!
