How I rate: I don't compare across genres. So I don't think, oh, that book I just read isn't as good as Pride and Prejudice when that book is advice on car maintenance. If it's a piece of comedy, I compare it to other comedies and ask myself if the book stood up to the claims on the cover. If it's a short book, I don't compare it to long books I've read. Has it fulfilled the purpose within the constraints set out by the author? These things would help get a five star rating.
Love and Misdirection by Mari Jane Law. Book 3 of 3: Love & Mishaps Quirky Romantic Comedy Standalone. Oh my. What a series. I love the cover. Very eye-catching. I did love Harmony. James, I really didn't like. But he did grow on me. I liked Tim. It was nice to see Gavin, Luke, Miranda, Perdita, Candy, Ramesh, and Tom. I really didn't like Melody. Not how she was with Harmony. I wanted to jump in the book and give Melody what for. I loved the ending. I would definitely recommend this book.
Now are you getting major The Holiday vibes or is it just me? This is such a cute story, and you had me with the fake engagement trope! It is a good story, with a lot of feel good moments, but it works so well blending in between all the harder themes like loss, grief, and abandonment. It’s funny that they are perfect for each other and they both find solace in that.
This is a book that you can read at any pace, I’m reading it slowly so I can fully digest and get sucked in, but I can also see how readers will fly through this as they want to see Harmony and James’ sparks fly!
Definitely snuggle up and read this book this Christmas, it will tug at your heartstrings but will also make you laugh out loud!
Mari Jane Law crafts a poignant and emotionally charged romantic drama in Love & Misdirection. With its compelling blend of personal tragedy, unexpected connections, and the search for healing, this book is a moving exploration of love and resilience in the face of life’s toughest challenges.
The story introduces Harmony Payne, a woman whose life has been defined by loss and longing, and James Traffurth, a widower grappling with grief and fatherhood. Their lives collide in an unexpected way when Harmony discovers an abandoned baby and proposes a fake engagement with James in hopes of creating the family she desperately desires. What unfolds is a beautifully messy, heartfelt story of two broken people finding solace and strength in one another.
Law handles heavy themes - grief, infertility, and the complexities of parenting - with sensitivity and grace, weaving in moments of levity and hope to balance the emotional weight. The characters are wonderfully flawed yet relatable, and their gradual journey toward trust and connection feels authentic and rewarding. James’s struggles with his rebellious son and Harmony’s deep yearning for motherhood add rich layers of depth to the narrative.
The book’s pacing is steady and the dynamic between Harmony and James is tender and genuine, making their eventual connection all the more satisfying.
Love & Misdirection is a deeply touching story about rebuilding and finding love when life takes unexpected turns. Fans of emotionally driven romances with a dash of unpredictability will find plenty to enjoy in this beautifully written novel. Mari Jane Law’s storytelling shines, leaving readers with a message of hope, healing, and the enduring power of love.
The third book in the Love & Mishaps Quirky Romantic Comedy Standalone series, Love And Misdirection. I read each book one after the other, this being the latest one. I was looking forward to seeing if the quality of writing was just as good and the story as unique. I didn't need to worry. This book was just as good!
I loved it that characters from the previous books pop in, too. This just made me feel like I was at home. This book is another one that deals with emotional issues around pregnancy and loss.
The fact that I'm a mother myself made me so invested in these characters. Harmony, I felt for immediately. She definitely had me on an emotional rollercoaster with everything she has been and is still going through in the book. James touched my heart also. His plight made me so sorry for him. This author can make me feel for all her characters, whichever book it is.
Even saying I found it emotional, Mari Jane Law, again brought the unique story telling that injects humour into whichever story I read. She finds that balance, and it pays off tenfold. A great set of books that is only enhanced by the addition of Love and Misdirections. Thanks to Hygge Books Tours and the author for the gifted book to write my honest review.
Loved it! I've enjoyed all Mari Jane's books, but this one has just become my favourite. If you like a good rom-com then you need to read this series!
Harmony and James are an incredible couple - well, not a couple at the beginning, but you'll soon work out where it's going! There wasn't a thing I didn't enjoy about this book. Tim was adorable, Saskia was hilarious, James was a sweetie and Harmony just didn't want to upset anyone. There was heartbreak and some difficult decisions to be made, but with the love and support from friends (and sometimes family), everything in Love & Misdirection slots nicely into place as the story progresses. Mari Jane Law intertwines several difficult subjects into the storyline, and it works well as we get to know all the new characters, as well as catch up with old friends. I laughed out loud at parts and my heart was breaking in others, but I loved it a lot.
Each of Mari Jane's books can be read as a standalone, but if you start at the beginning, you'll be introduced to the characters and their lives from the start, rather than then appearing randomly in the middle of the story.
Thank you to Mari Jane Law and Rachel's Random Resources for the opportunity to read and review Love & Misdirection.
This book follows Harmony Payne who finds newborn Patience outside her children’s home. Desperate to be in with a chance of adopting Patience maybe engaged and in a stable family unit will help her chances to do just that.
Enter James Truffurth, a tragic accident killing his wife and son he is looking for a fresh start with his older son to try and put his past behind him, but when he meets Harmony could this be his key to helping his family move on?
This is the 3rd Mari Jane Law book I’ve read and her writing style is so easy to read, her characters are always well fleshed out and theres’s always some laugh out load moments.
This book covers some really hard hitting topics and can be incredibly moving, and it could be really easy for this book to slip into being a depressing read but Mari manages to create lightness and hope throughout the story. I especially loved all the little schemes that the children in the home came up with to get Harmony and James into quite a few spots of bother.
Although this can be read as a standalone, I really would recommend reading the other 2 books first, there are so many characters from the other books in here that I feel like you would miss out on a lot if you dived straight into this one.
I will definitely be reading book number 4.
Thank you to @hyggebooktours and @marijanelaw for gifting me a copy of this book for review and letting me be a part of this tour.
This book covers so many different difficult subjects, but sensitively and heartfelt. The writing style meant that the story had an effortless flow, and I really enjoyed reading it.
I love that the miscommunication trope and fake engagement trope doesn't result in frustration but actually was quite refreshing because each of the characters deals with things openly and honestly.
The story follows two main characters, Harmony and James. Both of them have had trauma in their pasts that they are trying to move forward from, and with help from those around them, they are doing the best they can.
I really enjoyed the story line of Saskia and how clever the kids were. It shows, I think, that sometimes kids aren't really seen as clever as they really are. I thought they were brilliant in the story.
Roxy's storyline was tough but poignant. It took a lot of guts to do what she did and be truthful about what she wanted. Sometimes, what is best for the child isn't what the norm would expect.
Thank you @hyggebooktours @marijanelaw1 for letting me be part of this tour and reviewing this book. I fell in love with Love & Misdirection straight the way. This is book 3 of the series, but you can read as a standalone as I did. The main characters are Harmony who is fostering baby called Patience and Harmony wants to adopt her, but she has her own problems going on . Then there's James who lost his wife and has a son and has moved across a children's home where Harmony works. This is a beautifully story that tug at my heart and I loved how caring and loving Harmony is to the children she's looking after, and she is so patient. I really connected with her and wanted and was willing her to have a happy ending. I found Love and Misdirection hard to put down. I was attached to the book straight away, and it is very well written that keeps the reader engaged which is brilliant. Fantastic read but you will need tissues 5 stars.
After devouring Mari's previous books I wasted no time diving into this one, while this has some of her key points that she includes in all her romances this one felt just a little bit more realistic and deeper which I immensely enjoyed. The plot line for this romance was right up my alley cause there's nothing I love more than a struggling single parent romance, if youre a trope lover like me then this novel is packed with some amazing ones like second chance romance, neighbours to lovers and of course fake engagement.
The characters in this story felt so realistic and relatable,we get to really se their strugglers and trauma as in this book and it makes it easier for us to root for them and understand why they are the way they are. While this romcom touches on some sensitive topics don't be alarmed Because its still has that quirky funny feeling like all of Law's books and you will put this down feeling all warm and fuzzy inside.
A heartfelt story that explores several themes, united by the central theme of love. The author addresses heavy issues with care and a touch of hope, skillfully weaving moments of lightness and scenes written with a sense of humor, which bring balance. This is a story about human relationships and the power of love, presented through compelling main characters. Harmony and James, whose paths cross in an unexpected way, are engaging, portrayed with their human flaws, inner struggles, and emotional baggage from past experiences. The dynamic between the main characters is both fun and serious, with emotional depth, as well as thought-provoking. The plot offers unexpected twists that explore the complexity of relationships in a way that differs from typical romantic dramas. The book is captivating, with pages filled with sincerity and strong messages, leaving a sense of warmth and hope.
I really enjoyed this book. It was such an easy read and the writing style was so easy to get on with.
The main character Harmony had such an emotional back story to her and you could see how it impacted a lot of the decisions she made throughout the book.
James the second main character within this book also had such a tragic and emotional backstory. (I literally just wanted to give them both a hug). At the start of the book James came off as a bit of an arsehole but as the story went out you learnt that not to be the case.
The dynamic between Harmony and James was quite amusing to read as the book went on, they started out not liking each other and eventually their relationship changed and grew.
Harmony was such a kind and loving character, she lived and worked in a children's home and the love she had for each of the children that came through the front door was as if they were her own children.
Personally I think the characters within this book all had great development from where they started off and it was wonderful to read.
“Love and Misdirection” is the third book in Mari Jane Law’s ‘Love and Mishaps’ series. These rom-coms are truly adorable and I have thoroughly enjoyed reading every one. I love how she picks a character from the previous book and then builds a new story around them or their friends - while still allowing for each book to read as a stand-alone (although if you intend reading them all I would recommend reading them in order).
This book wasn’t as laugh out loud as the previous two but the author still managed to incorporate some very funny scenes within a truly thought provoking and emotional story. The themes of grief, longing and loss, motherhood, infertility and life-affecting decisions, are all wrapped around a hilariously misdirected engagement but one thing you’re guaranteed with this author, is her guaranteed heartwarming endings.
All the kids played such huge roles and my heart attached instantly to each one of them. The author ensures every character literally comes to life, they are so well portrayed with their personalities vividly described.
I do hope there will be more books written like this from Mari Jane Law, she is such a tremendous author and knows exactly what a reader wants from their stories. Please write more! I’m already missing all the characters and it goes without saying I’d recommend these books to readers of this genre.
I felt a whirlwind of emotions with this book in all the best ways. It has everything you could want with a second chance romance trope and a fake engagement you will be drawn in from the start.
Harmony, the main character, is so loving and caring that you can't wait for her to get her happy ending. James, the second main character, although may not be so likeable to begin with you will be routing for them and enjoying their story unfold.
Each character has their own struggles and trauma, which make them so relatable, and although the story covers some very difficult topics like grief and loss of pregnancy, Mari's writing style still keeps your heart full of hope.
This was my first time reading one of Mari Jane law books, and I absolutely loved it. I am looking forward to picking up the other books in the series.
Thank you very much to @hyggebooktours and @marijanelaw for letting me be a part of this truly heartwarming story.
This is now the third book in the Love & ...... Series and still (!!) I haven't had chance to read book 1 - Love & Pollination. But, I did read book 2 last year and loved it so much that I just couldn't resist grabbing this one too! I will get there with my catch up before book 4 comes!!
Having said that, these really do work well as standalone reads and this was another one that really had my emotions all over the place.
This book deals with a fair few tough subjects, such as grief, pregnancy loss and childlessness, but also those issues that come along sometimes with families with children - navigating these is always hard, but doing it alone can feel impossible.
Being a mum, I couldn't help but become invested in this right from the start. I really loved Harmony, such a relatable character and I connected with her on lots of levels. This meant being able to feel all of her emotions though and this had me on an emotional rollercoaster.
Similarly, James. After all he'd been through, he was still doing his best and it was tough to see him struggle.
In true Mari style though, these were all written beautifully and with sensitivity throughout. But of course, with the added infusion of humour too to balance out those heavy moments.
It was wonderful watching the couple work through their own issues, but also great to see how they came together to support each other and lighten the others' load. This all culminates in a satisfying ending, leaving me feeling hopeful and full of love.
Quirky is definitely the word for this romantic novel. There are comic moments for also some very poignant parts. The characters are certainly quirky. Characters that have experienced trauma makes Love & Misdirection a rather emotional read in some ways. The plot keeps up at a regular pace, there subplots which don’t distract from the main protagonist. I feel Law writes her narrative in a sensitive manner and is able to hold the readers attention. I found Love & Misdirection easy read and follow.
A woman who will never become pregnant is caring for a baby she wants to adopt but she’s single, not culturally aligned, and runs a care home. A single father, a health inspector, whose wife has died is uptight and nearly manages to destroy the children’s home by not asking questions before reporting them. His son enjoys the company of the children in the home, communicating with a young boy who doesn’t speak. So much to admire in the story. Chances, coincidences, two different points of view, makes this tale interesting. It has the same quirkiness as Love in the Cupboard, although that is expressed in different ways.
This is a beautiful British small town, fade to back romance between two grieving people finding their way to themselves as they find each other. Harmony works in a children's home and is struggling to accept her childlessness. She fosters a new-born and this sets off a chain of events with new neighbour James and his son Tim, who are floundering in their own grief.
This romance shines in its small scale. There's no billionaires or alphas, no exotic locations or grand gestures. It works because it's full of the detail of the sometimes-ordinary lives of these kind people. I was so invested in them finding and deserving each other.
Loosely, it’s a fake engagement, but nobody believes it, they persevere anyway. The side characters are important, from the social worker placing baby Patience, to the older boys who befriend Tim, and the friendship group around them - especially Roxy, and staff at the home. These characters bring the laughs and the meddling, and eventually, bring James and Harmony together. Author Mari has a light touch and even with the harshest parts of children’s loss and abandonment I still laughed and ached for them all.
It's told in third person with alternating chapters which gives a lovely overlap so we can see how Harmony's and James' presumptions and insecurities keep them apart. All the kids are beautifully drawn and vivid. I'd describe this as a quiet pleasure - and ultimately a joy to read.
Thank you Mari Jane Law for the ARC. Opinions are my own.
Classic Mari Jane Law, this story follows the hilarious misadventures of two people who’ve had more thrown at them than anyone should have to bear. No spoilers, but Harmony and James and the cast of Pinkerton Hall children’s home (who act as a sort of Greek chorus sometimes) battle their way through comic misunderstandings and tentative overtures to find their HEA. If you want your heartstrings tugged and your funny bone tickled, this is just what the doctor ordered.
I really enjoyed this author‘s writing. This book was no exception. Harmony‘s life has been on a downhill slide. James lost his wife and a child in a car crash. They were destined to meet and help each other heal. Love Misdirection is the story of two people who have suffered tragic loss and how they work to help each other, trying to avoid the fact that they are meant for each other. The book is full of emotion-I cried, laughed and felt completely overjoyed with his fantastic romance. I highly recommend it and the others by this author.

Love & Misdirection by Mari Jane Law is a heartfelt romantic comedy that masterfully weaves themes of grief, longing, and unexpected connections. Harmony Payne, grappling with her own tragedies, finds herself drawn into a tangled web with her new neighbor, James Traffurth, who is also navigating the aftermath of loss. The premise of a fake engagement feels fresh and engaging, prompting both characters to confront their pasts in hilarious and poignant ways.
Law's writing shines as she balances humor with deeply emotional moments, creating an exploration of motherhood and second chances. The quirky cast of characters and the charming small-town setting near Bristol add to the story's warmth, making it a delightful escape. Readers will root for Harmony and James as they navigate their shared struggles, proving that sometimes, outrageous lies can lead to the most genuine of connections. A must-read for anyone who enjoys a blend of laughter and heart in their romance!
"Love & Misdirection" is a charming and heart warming romantic comedy that kept me turning the page with its endearing characters and the refreshing twist on a classic fake engagement trope. Harmony and James, both wounded by their personal tragedies, navigate a complex and bittersweet journey that feels both touching and sincere.
One aspect that truly stood out for me was the brief but impactful glimpse into Roxy's storyline. Her decision to acknowledge that she wasn't the best fit to raise her son and asking Harmony to step in was incredibly moving. It takes immense courage for an overwhelmed mother to admit that she may not be able to give her child what they need, and Roxy’s choice felt like a poignant reminder of the strength it takes to put a child’s well-being first. Not many stories tackle this type of scenario with such sensitivity and grace.
Overall, the book is full of heart. The fake engagement trope is given new life here, as the characters’ growth and emotional maturity take center stage. I appreciated the absence of unnecessary drama—especially no third-act breakup—and instead, we get a refreshing focus on honest communication. This is a story about two broken people learning to trust again, with a gentle yet satisfying conclusion. Love & Misdirection is a truly sweet and thought-provoking read.
The story's quirky moments brought humor and lightness, while the deeper themes of loss, healing, and found family kept me emotionally invested. Mari Jane Law skilfully balances the fun with the poignant. The way the narrative explored Harmony's longing for motherhood, James’s grief, and the loveable chaos of life with children was beautifully done.
While I wouldn’t describe this as a page-turner, it’s a book that I found quietly compelling. The heart warming ending left me smiling, and the journey along the way was definitely worth it. If you're looking for a thought-provoking yet sweet romantic comedy, Love & Misdirection is an excellent choice!
I received a copy via Hidden Gems and all opinions are my own.
This is a lovely book to take away on a holiday or just at home on your sofa and to get absorbed in. It’s a light hearted comical romantic tale of the lives of Harmony and James as they try to express and work through the circumstances of their blossoming love for each other. All the characters and their interconnectedness are beautifully and skilfully brought to life amidst a children’s home setting. It’s so pleasing to have a happy ending and it leaves me with a smile on my face.
The third of Mari Jane Law’s love and series and this one doesn’t disappoint. It is quirky, funny and poignant all at the same time. Harmony can’t have children and yet looks after a lot of young children at the home she works at. James has a child, but his wife and second child were killed in a car accident. Can they both help each other find what they are looking for? Do they actually know what they need? Great characters and a lovely plot. Can be read as a stand-alone as the characters are not related to previous books.
This is the third book in Mari's 'Love & Mishaps Quirky Romantic Comedy' series but can be read as a standalone. I have also read the first book in this series which is called 'Love & Pollination' and the second book which is called 'Love In the Cupboard' which I would also highly recommend and you can check out my review on that on Amazon and social media.
'Love & Misdirection' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Mari discusses/includes loss of pregnancy, cancer, childlessness from past cancer and serious childhood issues.
ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL BOOK IN THIS ABSOLUTELY GORGOUS AND ADDICTIVE SERIES.
Another great book in this series and I am looking forward to the next book in this series which I am hoping Mari is typing up as I type this up! I would always recommend reading books in a series in the correct order but If you have just discovered this fabulous author and want to get stuck in with this gorgeous book then never fear! There is a silver lining to reading later books in a series if you haven't had a chance to read the previous ones and that is while you are waiting for the next book to come out you can go back and read the previous books!! You seriously have to grab your copy of this absolutely gorgeous page turner along with 'Love & Pollination' and 'Love In The Cupboard' today!! The descriptions, the characters and the absolutely brilliant and humorous storyline!!! I mean seriously I cannot describe just how unique and heart warming this book is!!! There are just no words. I mean I'll try but my advice is stop reading this review and GET YOUR COPY NOW!!! If you love romance, humour, feel good books, heart-warmers, turn a frown upside down books… Do you know what...whatever you like to read just give this a go and you will NOT regret it!!! As you can tell I thoroughly enjoyed this addictive and sweet page turner!!! In this brilliant book we meet Harmony Payne who I have not yet met in the previous two books in this series. Harmony now works at a children's home after her relationship ended, she survived an operation that left her unable to have children and lost her musical career too. One evening when she is working late she discovers a baby that has been left on the home's doorstep in a crisp box. Harmony would love to adopt the child herself but knows that the fact that she is a single mum will hinder any chances she may have. We also meet another new character called James Traffurth who has lost his wife and his youngest son and is now a single Dad to his surviving son Tim. James and Tim move into the home opposite the children's home where Harmony works and they go over to introduce themselves. However, when James spots a cockroach his job as an Environmental Health Inspector means he has to report it to the Environmental Health Office. When the inspectors turn up Harmony realises that it is James who reported her and needless to say she is not impressed. When James explains the situation Harmony forgives him and even considers a fake engagement in order to be able to adopt Patience. With James trying to salvage his broken relationship with Tim and with Harmony desperate for a baby will either find what they are looking for or with a home filled with children needing love and with lots of ears listening in will things go from bad to worse? Well, if you want to find out then you will have to grab your copy of this lovely and unputdownable book today and I can guarantee you will not regret it. With a storyline filled with secrets, children, heartache, humour, caring, love, lies, romance and everything you could ask for and more in a book what are you waiting for? I will mention again that Mari covers several health issues in this book along with cancer and the fact that she has done her research absolutely shines through the pages! It is a pet hate of mine when authors do little or even no research on their chosen topics and the story is littered with unnecessary mistakes that ruin the book but there is no need to worry about that here. Mari covers several sensitive topics in this book and does so in a compassionate and sensitive way while highlighting certain impacts of cancer to readers. I think it is a great idea when authors highlight certain topics in books as it helps to spread awareness of those things. This book is a real pick me up and will definitely turn any frown upside down!! It captured my attention from the very first page and kept me glued to the pages until the very last word and definitely left me wanting more!! Mari's fantastic writing skills and vivid descriptions will whisk the reader to Pinkerton Hall along with Harmony and James ensuring you see and feel everything that they are! This is one of those fantastic books that is perfect to read anywhere and everywhere from curled up next to a roaring fire to sunning yourself on a beach as regardless of where you are Mari will whisk you away with the storyline!! I absolutely devoured this book in one sitting as there was no way I could put it down!! Each and every time I even thought about it to get some actual house work done the characters called me back to demand their attention!! One of the things I really enjoyed about this storyline is that it is unique to me as I had never read a storyline like it which always makes a lovely change after reading so many books as it is getting harder and harder to find something new. An absolutely brilliant read that will make your day brighter!
Although this is the third book in this stunning series I would have had absolutely no problems reading it without reading the first two books in the series prior to this one. Every book in this series can be read as a standalone. Any details or events that have previously happened are mentioned in just the right amount of detail to let a new reader know what has happened and yet not too much to bore a previous reader.
I absolutely loved the larger than life, unique and just fantastic characters that Mari has created for this book!! Thanks to her fantastic descriptions it truly feels like you are right next to Harmony, James, Tim and the Pinkerton Hall children throughout. I absolutely loved meeting them and was rooting for them throughout. It was not just Harmony and James I loved meeting and getting to know but also many of the other characters that I met and fell in love with when I read 'Love & Pollination' and 'Love In The Cupboard' including Faith, Miranda, Perdita and Saul along with their baby Petal, Roxy and her new baby Joshua, Gavin and Luke and their and Miranda's baby Oscar and more! I loved watching the personalities and confidence change and develop from the start to the finish as well as friendships and relationships with all of the characters. All of the characters are unique with their own personalities, weaknesses, flaws and strengths and I loved meeting and getting to know them all. The only downfall with the characters is that they are entirely fictional even though Mari brings them to life unfortunately, no matter how much I would love to, I am unable to meet up with them in the real world!! I was completely invested in them all throughout and I was gutted when the time came to say Goodbye! Mari truly does an absolutely amazing job of bringing the story to life and the characters leap out of the pages as your turning them thanks to her evocative writing skills and I enjoyed getting to meet them all, some again!! It really goes to show how talented she is creating such a wonderful storyline and all these brilliant characters in this fab series and I am really hoping I will not have to wait too long for the next book to come out!
Clear your schedules as this is one gorgeous and unputdownable stunner ❤️
Overall an absolutely gorgeous book that will sweep you away making you smile, warm your heart and leave you needing more!!!
I've read and loved both the first two books in this series and loved this one as well! I do think this one was a little different to the other two though in that it was more serious. It still had funny moments of course but there were definitely some harder topics in this one, be sure to check the trigger warnings if you need to because some of them featured quite heavily. I loved seeing characters returning from the previous two books but unlike the last one I do think this one could be read on its own if you so wished (but idk why you would hehe). I loved Harmony as a main character. The struggles she's lived through in her life were so unfortunate and I really felt for her. I don't want to give too much away but it featured heavily and how she's used her experiences to do what she loves now is just beautiful. She really deserves a happily ever after. I loved James too, who's also had a rough life, just trying to be a good father for his son Tim. The story was such a lovely heartwarming one, despite the hardships, or maybe because of them. I'm not sure if there are any more planned for this series but I really hope there is and look forward to reading more of Mari's books!
This was such a fun story, it had so many twists and turns and the ending whilst exactly what I was expecting was completely unexpected.
The characters are engaging and it was so good to see the mindset of others around the main two giving the whole story a more rounded world showing the ups and downs of life. I really enjoyed that although engagements to sell a story are a common trope that was where the trope ended in this story the ability for the people involved to acknowledge where their own pasts had created automated responses in them and want to change and grow was really refreshing.
It definitely feels that in this story a trope was modernised and moving away from the toxic drawn out pain that is usually used in romances to suggest that miscomunication is the only thing wrong for the "perfect" couple. Watching this couple grow and communicate not only with each other but the people around them was sweet and I finished this book with a smile on my face.
I read this book through an ARC provided by Hidden Gems.
Harmony works at a children’s home. When she finds an abandoned baby on the doorstep, is this a sign and a chance for her to finally become a mother. But she is single. Being engaged would help boost her chances but the only available choice is James. Will Harmony and James’ fake relationship be believed?
This book starts with quite a memorable and defining scene in which baby Patience is left on the doorstep of the children's home. Harmony is the first person to find the baby and from that point on she bonds with Patience and the two become attached to each other. The storyline was heart-warming and heart-breaking all at the same time. The way the characters were written and their problems felt very real. Essentially this is a story about hope, moving forward and taking a chance.
The more I learned about Harmony’s back story my heart broke for her. She's been through a lot. She was jilted at the altar and then found out that she could never be a mother, which is something she’s always wanted. Knowing she can never biologically have a child she tries to help and care for children by working at a care home. At the care home she is essentially a surrogate mother to all of the children, taking care of them as if they were her own. But when baby Patience is abandoned, it gives her hope of becoming an adoptive parent. But the one thing that could go against her is the fact that she is single and being in a relationship would improve her chances. This is where James comes in who is her new neighbour. Harmony and James do not get off on the right foot because of an impromptu decision that James makes without knowing the full facts. Despite this it’s clear that both Harmony and James are attracted to each other. By complete chance they enter into a fake engagement so Harmony can adopt Patience and they pretend to be in a loving relationship. The engagement might be fake but the love certainly isn’t.
One thing that Harmony and James have in common is that tragedy, loss and grief have touched her lives. Harmony is grieving for the fact that she can never carry a baby and is scared that she will lose Patience. James is still grieving for the loss of his wife and baby and now acts as both mother and father to his son Tim. It is through their grief and loss that they bond and learn together to move on.
This is the third book in the Love & Mishaps series which can be read as part of the series but also as a standalone. This book does include characters from the first two books but information about their backstories is provided so I didn’t feel like I was missing any essential information about them. I’m looking forward to reading the first two books in the series and learning more about the secondary characters featured in the story.
What a fun love story, broken hearts healed, families built or reunited
This story is a touch above the usual romantics, it has both humor & kindness, which elevates the plot, the ensemble cast of characters. It never becomes mawkish or over sentimental, but explains & shares the ups, the downs, the losses, the triumphs.
This book tugged at my heartstrings. A poignant story; Mari Jane Law has dealt with complex and heartbreaking issues in a very open way.
Having suffered from immense loss, both Harmony and James are trying their best to navigate through life but still struggle emotionally, that is until they find each other. They find comfort in their bond and begin to heal together.
The characters from the previous books also make an appearance and true to her writing style, the author manages to weave humour and eccentricity into the story.
Love & Misdirection kept me absorbed and I do hope that there will be another book after this following Roxy's journey.
My thanks to the author for providing me with this book in exchange for an honest review.
With thanks to @hyggebooktours and @marijanelaw for bringing this amazing book...
A baby abandoned on the doorstep and a woman who can't have children and a single father who's struggling, now this is about to turn into something beautiful ❤️
A wonderful but realistic tale of 2 broken people wanting to make life meet, spending most of their time wanting to be together, it's funny but absolutely incredible, I did need the tissue packets in numerous parts of this story so have them ready to go! I couldn't bare to leave the story so I read it really quickly and in just a short few sittings, it's one of the favourites I have read in 2024 and is very recommended!
I was given an advance copy, and all my reviews are voluntary
