Once a year, a psychological storm sweeps over Neira’s entire species. They call it the Heat. From the moment its gnarled fingers grasp their kind, shifters turn feral. It’s a whirlwind of aggression and chaos, and Neira is no stranger to it.

Against all odds, Neira has lasted an incredible amount of time alone. Twice now, she has withstood the ferocity of the Heat, but as a third year approaches, Neira is losing hope. Females don’t usually survive independently, and Neira’s strength makes finding an equal all but impossible.

When Neira finally stumbles upon Judd and his pack, she momentarily believes she has found salvation. But Judd is impulsive, his secrets are deep, and his territory seems to have eyes of its own. Judd’s disregard for the law has gained the attention of others, and now Neira feels trapped.

Neira is plagued by uncertainty and is questioning her decisions. Fear begins to consume her, and she finds herself running away from it all. Only then does she find herself face-to-face with the one thing that truly frightens her the most.

Shade.

~ shifters
~ dystopian? Sort of
~ om drama
~ no grovel

I have so many mixed thoughts, much like this story. I enjoyed the writing style for the most part but there was a lot of telling and not showing, many times I’d be left trying to make sense of something for it to be explained a paragraph or page later- this made the story a little choppy. I often felt like I had started in the middle of a series where things had already been explained, but I hadn’t read it.

So we have Niera who’s searching for an alpha to match her dominance. She stumbles across Judd, who finally after years of searching puts her to the ground. He marks her without her consent - which we learn later is a huge no no (well- it’s not illegal but frowned upon but then it’s described as law.. so confusing).

So…the feral smut with Judd was hot 🥵. Loved it. Then comes Shade…he shows up tracking Nieras scent- realizes she’s his true mate but because Judd marked her she can’t tell. So he leaves but not after leaving cryptic remarks about Niera not being Judds first mate.

Of course Niera asks and what happens? All the sudden Judd is a bad person for losing control and killing his previous mate, when it’s been previously state the heat turns them into feral mating beasts. So Niera condemns him for killing his mate (even though she’s killed dozens more challengers) and takes off on her own to find her fated mate.

We’re told about all the people she meets rather than shown, and her mysterious Shadow (who we know is right away) follows her but doesn’t do a very good job providing for her as she’s starving.

Just as she’s about to return to Judd (who I was still routing for) Shade steps in to prevent it. She stays with his pack just to prove she’s not a slave to Judds mark. So at this time we know Shade knows he’s her true mate. Does he try to win her over? Nope - still doesn’t take very good care of her, is an asshole, and they maintain a platonic relationship until randomly on the way to visit her parents (who- sub plot are royalty but it was so confusing I didn’t bother to spend much time on it and thank goodness because in the end it was just dropped as the biggest unresolved plot piece) make out.

Anyway…to shorten this up - Shade was betraying her this entire time- his true mate! He was using her to get to her parents and Elias (some random childhood friend). He sleeps with her (sorry but the Judd sex was so much hotter) and leaves for months after. For a good reason, but still.

What does Niera do when she learns of his major betrayal??!

She sleeps in his bed like a pathetic doormat waiting for him to come back. He does- doesn’t even have to grovel or apologize because Niera thinks she needs to apologize too? For what?? I was ready to throw my phone.

Anyway Judd comes back for Niera, is now asshole of the year instead of Shade and Niera marks Shade and learns they’re true mates. The end. With lots of holes.

If you're into shifter romances with a fierce female lead, this one’s definitely worth a read. Neira kicks things off strong: she’s an alpha in her own right and surviving solo through something called the Heat—a kind of psychological storm that turns shifters wild. The Heat rolls around once a year, bringing out aggression and chaos in her kind, and honestly, it had me hooked from page one.

Neira’s toughness and the world she’s navigating feel real, gritty, and well-crafted. When she crosses paths with Judd and his pack, you think she might’ve found her match, but it quickly gets complicated. Judd’s got secrets, and his territory has this eerie vibe, keeping you on your toes the whole way. The "Heated scenes" are just... YES!! The writing flows so well; I blew through the pages, totally engrossed. If you’re after a shifter story with action, romance, and some unexpected twists, I’d say this book delivers.

This book was delicious. I absolutely devoured it. The ending did feel a bit abrupt to me though; I would have preferred for it to be drawn out some more but maybe I'm just greedy. I await reading the authors future releases.

Okay let me tell you something about He is Ghost — it started slowly. Slowly enough that I almost put it down. And I am SO glad I did not because by the time this book hit its stride I was completely and utterly HOOKED and could not look away for a single second. 🖤
Our FMC Neira is an alpha in her own right — tough, fiercely independent and navigating one of the most unique supernatural concepts I have come across in paranormal romance in a long time. The Heat — an annual psychological storm that sweeps through her species and brings out chaos, aggression and raw instinct — is such a brilliantly creative piece of world building and it immediately set this book apart from anything else I have read in the genre. Was Neira frustrating at first? A little, yes. Did she completely win me over as the story developed? Absolutely and without question. 🙏
And then there is Judd. Haunting. Complex. Utterly, devastatingly compelling from the moment he appeared on the page and hiding secrets that I immediately needed to uncover. 🖤 The kind of MMC who carries the weight of everything he is not saying in every single interaction and makes you feel the full force of it. The atmosphere S.A. Monroe creates around him and his pack is gothic and deeply unsettling in the most delicious way — eerie and immersive and completely unlike anything I expected going in.
The slow burn between Neira and Judd is the absolute standout of this entire book and the thing I am still thinking about long after finishing. Perfectly, agonisingly slow and every single page of that burn is so completely earned that I was simultaneously desperate for more and never wanting it to end. 🔥
The atmosphere is genuinely the star of the show here. S.A. Monroe's writing is gothic and deeply atmospheric in a way that pulls you into Judd's territory and refuses to let you go — dark, textured and beautifully crafted. It is the kind of writing that makes the world feel real and lived in and I was completely transported.
The ending is satisfying and emotionally earned — though I will say if you prefer your endings completely clean and unambiguous you may find yourself wanting a little more resolution. This book leans into the bittersweet and if that is not your thing it is worth knowing going in.
This was my first book by S.A. Monroe and while the slow start gave me pause I would cautiously try her again — there is enough raw talent and atmospheric brilliance here to make me genuinely curious about what she does next.

He is Ghost by S. A. Monroe grabbed me from the get go. Seriously, I haven't read anything quite like it before, and I'm here for it. First off, the characters are so good. Neira, our main gal, is a wolf shifter, trying to navigate an intense survival mode, and then Judd and his pack show up. You're kinda hoping he's her savior, but finding someone who's truly an equal.
But then enters Shade and there's something different with him, a sense that's just right. The whole dynamic shifts, and it's fascinating to see how their connection develops. The paranormal romance aspect is definitely there, but it feels fresh and not like every other story out there. It's got that thrilling, suspenseful vibe that had me biting my nails, wondering what was going to happen next.
If you're looking for a paranormal romance that's got some serious bite (pun intended!) and a story that's both exciting and emotionally resonant, you should check out He is Ghost. S. A. Monroe really delivered here, and I'm already curious about what else they've written. Definitely a book that stays with you!

Neira was meant for this

I love how books have you fall in love with a character just to have that plot line pulled out from under your feet. In “He is Ghost” you fall in love with the characters, feel their pain, uncertainty and anguish. Then, build with hope that a new ending may be possible. It was a phenomenal read

For anyone who enjoys shifter reads, there's no reason for anyone to hesitate. Pick this up. The universe, the story, the characters, the pacing, is so refreshing. This standalone was a journey.
Something I have deeply coveted.
The twists and turns throughout kept me on my toes. Even the times I was right, something would pop up that I didn't really think about or expect. It's very stimulating lol I would think about it on my drives.
This is definitely one of those books that linger with you and will be one you can't help rereading later after knowing what you know.

I really enjoyed the female lead. She's strong physically AND mentally. I honestly love how she doesn't settle and questions what needs to be questioned. Especially given the circumstances. Even for those of us without a wolf inside, there are instincts that shouldn't be ignored.

And the spice?
yes please

I sincerely mean this when I say I look forward to this author's future work. This was such a great book to start 2025 with.

This book is a fantastic introduction to an author to keep an eye on!

I’ve been a fan of this book since the Wattpad days and I will say that WE WERE WAITING FOR UPDATES FOR YEARS AND SHE DELIVERED!!!

I would only hop back onto Wattpad to see if she made any updates.

I must say, I am extremely happy with the final journey! I definitely felt things were a little clunky in some parts (plot holes/ reactions that didn’t make sense/ power levels that seemed to fluctuate when relevant), but I would imagine it’s also not an easy thing to pick up a book again after several years and finish it.

Keeping that in mind, I’d rate it quite highly. I will be sure to watch out for her future books where she writes it without any massive gaps.

Overall really realistic characters but some strange ending choices. I’d definitely recommend it to fantasy romance lovers.

I loved this book, but I feel like it was over too soon!! S. A. Monroe created a fresh take on werewolf society, immersing you into their world with unexpected plot twists. The main characters Neira, Judd and Shade all have their own backstory, expertly interwoven throughout the story, giving more perspective and depth as you read further. I did not expect the ending. I honestly hope that S. A. Monroe will be writing a story about what happens next! (PLEASE🙏🙏🙏)
I don't want to spoil the story, so...I will just say that you won't be disappointed!! 🔥🔥

Not my worst read of the year but close enough, there was literally no chemistry between the love interests, the end was super rushed and made zero sense(way too many plotholes) this book MIGHT have gone well if the author would’ve had the patience to sit down and actually invest the braincells into political systems and world building instead of mediocre smut.

It is a thrilling and seductive read that blends suspense with a healthy dose of spice. The story follows [Main character's name or brief description], as they become entangled with the enigmatic "Ghost." Monroe masterfully crafts a world of intrigue and desire, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.
The chemistry between the characters is undeniable, and the intimate scenes are both passionate and tastefully written. The spice level is definitely present, adding an extra layer of excitement to the already gripping plot. It enhances the emotional connection between the characters and adds to the overall intensity of the story.
This is a must-read for those who enjoy a blend of suspense, romance, and spice. Monroe delivers a captivating story that will leave you wanting more.

I did not like. Not only was the narration horrible but I’m just so tired of reading how a man can fuck whoever but the girl must remain a virgin. And then having the MC gloat about he’s the first between her legs. Couple that with the whole heat thing it’s just ick for me. Shoulda known. 🤷‍♀️
