How To Win At Love #4

Marry Your Best Friend

Rate this book
I love all the foster boys I was raised with. But there’s always been something special about Gabriel Gray.

For years I’ve tried to hide my attraction to him, because I know it’s one-sided.
Gabe is fiercely protective of me, but that’s as far as his affections go.

He’s older than me–something he reminds me of often - and he takes his role of caring for me seriously.

But when a family tragedy brings us together, grief and comfort lead to a fiery night of passion.
I might have given into my desires, but I refuse to let this change things between us. I know that Gabe will convince himself that staying with me is the right thing to do.

Gabe is my best friend, and I don’t want to lose him.

Is it too much to hope that fate has finally decided it’s our time, and I don’t have to choose between friendship and love?

Oh. My. Heart! This book stole it, my heart that is, from the first page!
Chrissy and Gabe, you have put me through the emotional wringer in more ways than one! Both feeling the same way but in fear of changing their relationship and because of this not being honest with each other. Gah!!!!
Every emotion was felt deeply, I was brought to tears on more than one occasion. What a beautiful read!

Great Read

This was a great read. Gabe and Chrissy may have been foster brother and sister they were made for each other. This is one story that has all the emotions and so much more. Never a disappointment in Hope Ford’s books

I stopped trusting this author a long time ago, but I don't know what made me start this book?

she's been in love with him since she was 8 years old, he only started noticing her 3 years ago and suddenly became jealous and possessive and she is currently 33 years old....

I don't even know if they are virgins, I don't even care anymore, I didn't want to keep reading this when I realized all the years that were lost.

-------------

ps.: I went to read another review and it turns out that after the hero and heroine have sex then they both get anxious about it, doubt each other, avoid each other, don't communicate.... FOR YEARS they did nothing and when they finally do they keep stretching it seems like chewing gum. I love friends to lovers, but these kind of stories give me migraines.

WHAT A FUCKING WASTE OF TIME

ER nurse Chrissy (h) and firefighter Gabe (H) have been best friends since childhood, standing by each other through thick and thin. But as their lives twist and turn, with devastating losses, dangerous challenges, and moments of undeniable closeness, Chrissy and Gabe are forced to face the feelings they’ve hidden for years. When tragedy strikes and emotions run high, their friendship is tested like never before. Gabe has to fight for Chrissy’s love, while she struggles with her fear of losing the one person she can’t live without. Hot and steamy friends to lovers, firefighter, small town romance, exploring love, connection, loyalty, heartbreak, danger, commitment, and taking chances.

Winning at Love

I am not the biggest fan of friend to lovers because all the characters focus on it ruining their friendship. They never even try to communicate their honest feelings about each other. I almost gave up on Gabe and Chrissy because Chrissy was a little selfish. Even once she realized it, she had no clue how to change her behavior. Yet, Gabe still loved and supported her. I wanted the HEA for him because he loved her for so long.
I was surprised by the heaviness of this book. There is a death of a brother who is in the military and a trapped in a fire situation. Chrissy is an ER nurse and Gabe is a firefighter. There are some intense moments.

All the feels

Wow! Hope Ford is one of my must read authors and this book certainly didn't disappoint. Chrissy and Gabe are the cutest couple though both of them fought so hard to hide their feelings from each other. Their story had me feeling very emotional, I smiled and I cried with this story. Have a sudden desire to go re-read all her Whisky Run books while I wait for future books 🥰

everything I waited for

These two have been top of my list since Gabe first told off Chrissy in Cole’s room “why are you in this room with my brother?” “He’s my brother too”

Girlll don’t play we both know neither of you thought of each other as foster siblings! This friends to lovers was everything I needed. I love that Gabe refused to let her run after they both laid their feelings out there! He knew they were end game!

“Marry your best friend” is the story of Chrissy and Gabe.

Two, madly in love besties spend the whole book circling around each other and denying the truth and pushing each other away, while everyone else roots for them yet they remain oblivious lol.

Wasn’t bad but was frustrating.

This book is part of the How to Win at Love series and the main characters are Chrissy Aiken, a nurse in the local A&E department, and Gabe (Gabriel) Gray, a fireman, who are both part of the same found family of foster siblings, who all stuck together and looked out for each other. Chrissy and Gabe have been best friends forever and he is the one she always goes to when she needs someone, but she is also in love with him, not realising he has been in love with her for years as well! There are also her other foster brothers, King, Holden, Ledger and Dom, who she sees as her brothers, but she has never called Gabe her brother, as it just doesn’t feel right. Gabe has always been really protective of her and being older than her, he was there when she first started dating as a teen and would scare off most of her dates!

This is a classic case of neither of them really knowing what the other feels about them and not wanting to ruin the friendship they have with each other and which they want to continue. Some of their friends and family can already see the attraction between the two of them, but each keep their feelings hidden, afraid to break up what they already have, whilst being unsure of the other’s feelings for them. They hadn’t spoken for a few days because of an argument where Chrissy refused to entertain the idea of having Gabe’s baby when she got the baby bug and has no partner. Each is missing having their best friend around and with Gabe having an injury that needs cleaning and fixing up, they can both get back into their normal routine. She thinks it would change everything between them, even though she could see it happen, but she can’t lose him as her bestie. Chrissy is exhausted of her hours and the stress of working in the A&E, with some recent losses of patient shitting her hard, and has been thinking of making a change for a while, which could take her away from town.

Gabe hasn’t dated anyone for over three years, after his last girlfriend disliked how close he was to Chrissy, which she takes as beign her fault and sets him up with her friend from work, Bethany, on a double date with her! Not that he really wants to go, but he does it as she asked him to, as her friend. When he comes in to see her next after a long shift fighting a fire, she thinks he is hurt again, but the news is much worse than that, as they have lost one of their family. She needs him to comfort her and gets him to finally reveal that he wants her, and they go to bed together. But the morning after she is regretting her actions, knowing that Gabe will never leave her now, even if he wanted to! It will take a combination of extended family and another dangerous event, to make them solidify their feelings for each other and declare their love for each other. She can’t get rid of him easily, however much she tries to dissuade him and think he will find someone else in time. A few favours from one of King’s friends ends up saving the day and Chrissy and Gabe now have a chance of their own HEA together. A nice conclusion, showing how the rest of their found foster family have grown and expanded as love found each of them their perfect partner.

I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

She's been in love with him forever. He's looked at her differently for the last 3 years (or less, it's not clear). They've been best friends and brother/sister (adopted) since they were at the orphanage - a point which is mentioned constantly both in inner monologuing and actual conversation for the first half of the book (and I do mean constantly). I mean it's still there after as well but yeah... the author really wants to drive that point home in the first half.

I have to say I was looking forward to the possibility of finally seeing Ledger and maybe him getting his own book but nope, the author used him and killed him off as a turning point to Chrissy's and Gabe's relationship instead. Honestly a really bad decision but maybe she was fed up with the series and it wasn't gaining enough traction or something so she stopped with this one and killed off the last remaining brother.

I also have to mention that their relationship as a whole is weird. I mean not them being best friends but how close they really are and never ventured passed that point even once. The way they both act and the way he talks to her with all those pet names it should have been a dead giveaway. And I can only assume it's normal between them because there really isn't any sort of change on her part in terms of his use of pet names, etc.

I liked Chrissy as a whole but there were some things that didn't make sense really. I mean she goes from not being interested in dating because she loves Gabe to going out with a doctor she doesn't even like, and then when she finds out that Gabe broke up with his girlfriend years ago because of her (not really her fault, but she assumes that because he put her first the blame falls on her), she begs him to go on a double date and she'll pick someone for him and vice versa but then she doesn't want to see him dating? Either she's completely confused or a little batty. I'm blaming it on her job... and that was another thing. She was all depressed to the point he had to come stay with her when she lost a patient, and then the next morning she's all fine like she didn't spend the night crying. She's all over the place emotionally.

And Gabe... what can I say about Gabe? He's there I guess. There wasn't much to him other than his inner struggles to keep it together because he shouldn't be looking at her like that, etc... it was annoying by the end.

Overall it was fine. It wasn't really a high note to go out on and I'm still pissed Ledger had to die for their relationship to go somewhere... Another character flaw of hers to be honest. She just put Gabe on the spot and then put the moves on him after finding out their brother died.. then in the morning she regrets it. I felt like it really cheapened what they could've had together.

This book was written so realistically that it felt like I’d lost one of my own family members! We didn’t know a whole lot about Ledger but still, my heart ached and I felt the sadness that you can only feel if you’ve lost a loved one, knowing you won’t see them again in this lifetime, the disbelief that they’re actually gone when you JUST talked to them and the plans you made are never gonna happen. It was obviously masterful writing but I could’ve done without it, especially if you’ve lost someone unexpectedly like that. Maybe a trigger warning might help? I’ve always kind of thought a lot of the TWs were overdone but this came out of nowhere and I wasn’t expecting it.

I don’t think Chrissy and Gabe, as foster brother and sister with feelings for each other, could have been portrayed any better than in this book. The longing and wishing and hoping, on both sides, kept me flipping pages even though it was a bit of a slow burn in reality but it was enough to keep me going, just WAITING for them to both get on the same page. Obviously I would’ve preferred it happened a lot sooner so we could’ve enjoyed it longer but it was still just as sweet when we finally got it.

This was an awesome read. Not too long but still, long enough that I felt like I’d read a much longer book—I didn’t feel like I’d missed anything, there were no unanswered questions (except maybe, WHY Ledger??!!! He had so much to live for! He was coming home!!! Seriously, I DO know this is fiction but TWs evidently exist for a reason, we’ve all lost someone close to us.) and we got a deliciously steamy HEA all wrapped up and topped with an epilogue 10 years in the future portraying the new generation. I LOVED it!! 5 stars!!.

Gabe & Chrissy

ARC Review

Marry Your Best Friend by Hope Ford is the 4th book in the How to Win at Love Series. We finally have Gabe & Chrissy's story. (We have been reading about them since Book 1.) They are foster brother & sister that grew up together in Whiskey Run. Probably around high school age they both realize their feelings for each other have changed to romantic love. They absolutely do nothing about it FOR YEARS because they are best friends. A ton of "I cannot tell her/him - will ruin us being best friends." Fast forward, they are both in their 30s and still have done nothing about yet!! 😣 Every single person in their life knows they have strong romantic feelings for each other.

3 Books, approx 57% into the 4th book & a family tragedy does it finally happen that Gabe & Chrissy admit to each other that they want to have sex together. 😵‍💫 Way, way too long to get to this point in their relationship!! It happens, then both of them agonize over it, doubt each other, avoidance, miscommunication... I will definitely admit I was super annoyed with both of them. At the end - there is a HEA and future epilogues.

Trigger Warning!
On page death and talk of gore.
Chrissy is an ER nurse and Gabriel is her foster brother and she's in love with him. He's been her best friend since she was eight and moved into the foster home.
Gabriel is a firefighter. He's loved her as much more than a foster sister for years.
They both get the "icks" whenever the word "brother" is mentioned. Are their feelings right? To them they are . But do they want to risk a lifelong friendship for the desire that they feel for each other?
She wants a baby and he wants her, the baby is a bonus, so win, win.
Can he stand back and watch her with another man?
No way!
He's always been the one to be there for her and he won't stop now.
When tragedy strikes, does it draw them together or farther apart?
It's time to tell the truth and take a chance.
If only she'll admit to herself that they need each other and were meant to be together.
The only issue I had with the MFC is that I felt that she was an over thinker and caused issues that weren't there. But I do love the two of them.

frustrated

I’ve read all four books and this one made me mad. There are sorta spoilers, be advised.

If you read the synopsis for this book, you know pretty much know what’s going to happen, especially if you’ve read the previous books. You can pretty much guess what the family tragedy is, who it involves, and why, and *maybe* how. It was my fault for being optimistic. I didn’t think the tragedy would be *that* bad, just so it can be the catalyst to get these two knuckleheads to FINALLY get it together and be a romantic couple. How much miscommunication and self-flagellation must there be that such a big event is necessary to bring them together?!

I was really hoping to get another book out of this series, but obviously not, which is a shame, as it could’ve gone so many ways and still the sweet story the rest of these are. That’s on me for not realizing this was only four books and that wasn’t going to happen.

I really enjoyed this series as a whole for the sweet, fluffy break between the darker stories I read. I was just so disappointed this one was the way it was.

Finally we get Chrissy and Gabe's story in the fourth installment of the how to win at love series by Hope Ford.
We were introduced to them in the very first book, and I must admit I have been looking forward to this one so much.
It has a hint of off limits vibes due to Chirssy and Gabe being foster siblings (no blood relation) and her being the sister to the group, but their also best friends as their closer to one another then anyone else.
This story has heartbreak and angst and not just from the will they won't they between Gabe and Chrissy. We get a snap shot into King, Holden, and Doms life post finding their wives. It's brilliantly written with dual pov chapters so we get a better insight into Chrissy and Gabe, and their dynamic.
There is angst and I won't lie I did she'd a tear, when I read a certain part (if you know, you know), Hope has smashed it out the park with this one. It is a standalone but I highly recommend reading them in order as you'll enjoy all of them.

5/5 stars, definitely will read again and the entire series.

3.5 stars. Chrissy, the female nurse lead, and Gabriel, the male firefighter lead, were both foster children in the same home, along with other boys. Having all remained a chosen family as adults, Chrissy and Gabe continue to be best friends. Whilst both knows they care for the other as more than friends, neither is willing to risk their friendship.

But this situation can’t continue forever and, as outside forces push at them, can they create a sustainable romantic relationship?

This novella is dual POV, well edited, and a contemporary, small town, foster siblings, friends-to-lovers romance. I enjoyed Chrissy’s compassion and empathy for others. I enjoyed Gabe’s care of and commitment to Chrissy. I admit I found the lack of willingness to communicate with each other frustrating. I enjoyed the supportive and integrated secondary characters. I enjoyed the non-romance plot that encouraged relationship development.

Things I loved about this book!!!
- Gabe’s protectiveness and love for Chrissy
- Gabe and Chrissy’s passion for their jobs (both in service, firefighting and nursing)
- Their natural friendship and the easy way they are with each other

Things I didn’t love as much about this book
- It seemed like Chrissy and Gabe were both exceedingly slow/unsure about realizing that the other loved them in a romantic way. Everyone in their circle and family realized they were in love with each other for a while. I know it was a friends to lovers romance and so there has to be some buildup but it seemed they were 2 steps forward and 1 step back for too long there. It could also be that I’m impatient🤷‍♀️.

Overall I did love the book. It was sweet and funny, there were a few tears, and lots of love. It was really well written and easy to read. Took me less than 2 hours.

They were raised in the same foster home together, and her other foster brothers have always felt like big brothers, but it’s different with him. He is her best friend. He’s her person. She would like more, but she doesn’t want to ruin what they have. He is in love with her. He is ready to take things to the next level. But he’s scared of running her off. The idea of not being close to her is worse than not telling her how much he loves her. This is such a sweet story. There is some good character development here, not only with the two mains, but also with their family. It is well written, and you feel their struggles as they spend time mutually pining for each other. This is such a nice little read not too short and the author treats them well getting them to their HEA and giving you an epilogue wrap up that is equally sweet.

Yoh! The phone rang a lot!

This is a major gripe of mine with this author. She never gives us time with the characters as a couple!

Considering it was such a long time coming, I really would have preferred if we had more time with Chrissie and Gabe as a happy couple instead of way too much talk about their doubt and fear of ruining their friendship in the beginning. (I mean, I got it, by Chaper Two, it was very clear that this was holding them back. We didn't have labor the point for a further 5 chapters, did we?)

And then, when they finally got together, there were way too many phone calls interrupting the "talk" that would solidify their relationship.

I was frustrated throughout because every time I thought, okay, good, now we're getting somewhere, the phone would ring (for realsies!) Chrissie would get back in her head and then poor Gabe would have to start all over again!

I don't think I'm being unreasonable in wanting a bit of love & romance in a romance novel, am I?

While Chrissy and Gabe grew up in the same foster home, they never thought of each other as siblings. They are each other's person, stuck in the best friend cycle. While Gabe knows his love and attraction for Chrissy is real and lasting, Chrissy still is fighting her attraction to Gabe. However the stress of her job as a ER nurse and the sudden loss of Ledger, while deployed, push Chrissy to the edge. As she deals with the grief, Gabe is always there to support her and she finally gives into her attraction for Gabe. However, before they can talk and confirm their love, Gabe is called to fight a wildfire and Chrissy in called in to the deal with injuries from the fire. When Gabe gets trapped behind the fire, Chrissy fears she waited too long. Hope Ford delivers another emotional Whiskey Run story.

Marry Your Best Friend is part of the How To Win At Love series. It's a steamy, friends-to-lovers, secret pining, mid-life, curvy girl gets her hunk romance. Chrissy is a 33 year old, sweet and curvy ER nurse. She was raised in the foster care system and is close with her foster brothers. Gabe is a 37 year old hunky, inked firefighter. He is Chrissy's best friend and foster brother. The two of them have been in love with each other for some time, but both are afraid of ruining their friendship and afraid the other doesn't feel the same. OMG, I wanted to slap these two silly just to make them communicate with each other. They had such hot chemistry, and the ending was so happy, but it was quite the roller-coaster ride full of laughs and tears before we got there. Gabe was such a hottie and boo for Ledger :( I loved this one so much!!.

I was really looking forward to this book after all the anticipation and was excited to finally dive into Gabe and Chrissy's story. As best friends who often correct family members that they are not siblings. Their story provided some great insight into their history and the deep bond they’ve shared since growing up together in a group home.

However, I was disappointed that it took the tragedy of Ledger, their sibling in the military, passing away for them to finally act on their feelings. This plot choice felt a bit forced and took away from the emotional depth I was hoping for. Overall, while it had its moments, this wasn’t my favorite Hope Ford book and felt a little underwhelming compared to the other stories in the series.

Marry Your Best Friend is lovely and sweet. Chrissy and Gabe have been best friends forever. Their lives have intertwined forever. And of course they are in love with each other, yet they do not know it. Chrissy wants a family so badly, she will do almost anything to achieve it. Gabe wants to give Chrissy everything, but is concerned that if he makes a move, he will lose her, and that is something that he cannot live with. Marry Your Best Friend actually had my eyes filling with tears, there is an unexpected twist in the story, and one that I do not think Hope Ford has ever had in her books, it was shocking and heartbreaking. Although the friends to lovers troupe is my least favourite troupe and typically if another author writes it, I would skip it, but when Hope Ford writes it, I am here for it!!!

I love the Friends-to-Lovers trope, so this was the book of the series I was looking forward to the most! ♥️ Especially with all the glimpses of these two in the other books of the series! Chrissy and Gabe grew up in a close foster family. Now, all the children are grownups and all have remained close but Chrissy and Gabe have a different kind of relationship. Both know their feelings are not sibling feelings, but neither want to mess up their friendship by confessing to the other! They have stressful jobs, her as an ER nurse and him as a firefighter but they make time for eachother. When tragedy comes to the found family, they pull close and their scenes together are fire. But Chrissy is worried it is just guilt for Gabe, and he’s stuck with her as to not hurt her. Can he convince her that he truly wants her?

This is book number 4 in the How to Win at Love series and focuses on Gabe and Chrissy. Gabe and Chrissy are foster siblings and best friends who have held back their true feelings for each other for a while because of fear. Neither one wanted to ruin their friendship or their family dynamic. The two of them have a lot of navigating and learning how to communicate effectively before they are able to truly embark on their happily ever after. When life throws them a huge curveball, it sets things in motion for them to move forward as more than friends, but they have to be brave and put their fears on the backburner and reach for their happiness. This was a great story and a great addition to the series.

Another great book in the How to Win at Love series

Foster Sbiblings (and Found Family) Chrissy (an A&E nurse) and Gabe (Gabriel) a fireman are best friends but they are also both have deeper feelings for each other, not realising the other does too, and struggling with what their feelings mean / trying to avoid the loss of their friendship.

Chrissy and Gabe are perfect for each other (once they sort themselves out). It was a very emotional read, hot and steamy times, friends to lovers, firefighter, nurse, small town, love, danger and a bit of heartbreak. It was good to see the progress the relationships from the previous books in the series. Without giving a spolier, there was one aspect that I found pretty devastating, couldn't quite believe it and really wish it hadn't happened.

So many tears....

Frustrated tears....
Happy tears....
Tears of grief....
Tears of heartbreak...
Tears of relief....
Tears of happiness...
And tears of overwhelming love.

I sobbed my way through most of this book, Gabe and Chrissy are adorable, they could easily be frustrating, but having read the earlier books in the series and knowing their background as a group - it is easy to understand their hesitation in changing the status quo, it just impact them. But they are so amazing together and are basically already dating...just without the sex! Sex which you know is going to be inferno hot, simply because the live is already there and they have had years of foreplay and imagining.
This has been an awesome series, I love all the cast and the unique bond they have.
I read this on Kindle Unlimited.

Finally we get Chrissy's and Gabe's story. They are forster siblings, but their feelings have changed over the years, they are not brotherly, but deep love. Both are reluctant to confess and destroy the deep and trusting friendship they have. When Chrissy gets baby fever things more or less come into motion and reveal the deep feelings who both try to surpress. Then a big loss happens, which made me cry hard. The story does not seem new, but Hope Ford has a gift with words and creating characters and everything else. I feel so deep somehow and loved to read more about the others, and the way they create their own family. Some heartfelt drama.

Chrissy and Gabe have been in love with each other as long as they can remember. They grew up together in the same foster home with their foster brothers. The only problem is they are best friends and neither of them are brave enough to tell the other one how they really feel. When tragedy strikes the family, they share a night of passion, but will they be brave enough to finally tel each other how they feel.

I have ben waiting for Chrissy and Gabe’s story since the first book in the series and it did not disappoint. I love the way that Gabe has always taken care of Chrissy and Chrissy in turn takes care of Gabe. They have a true friendship and that sets up for some steamy interactions. Chrissy and Gabe’s story was great and worth the wait.
