About the author

Haim Be’er (חיים באר), also publishing as Chaim Be'er, was born in Jerusalem in 1945 and was raised in an Orthodox home. He completed his army service in the military chaplaincy. In 1966, he began working for Am Oved Publishing House and a few years later became member of the editorial board. For many years, he also wrote a weekly column for the daily Davar. He taught Hebrew literature and creative writing at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, and at present he is editor of the Kesset Project for debut fiction. Be’er has received several literary awards for his poetry and fiction, including the Prime Minister's Prize twice (1979; 1993), the Bernstein Prize (1980), the Kugel Prize (2000), the Bialik Prize (2002), the ACUM Prize for Lifetime Achievement (2005), the Neuman Prize (2008), the Brenner Prize (2011), the Prime Minister'€™s Award for the Fostering and Preservation of the Hebrew language (2012) and the Ramat Gan Prize (2013). His novel, Feathers, is included in "The Greatest Works of Modern Jewish Literature" (2001).

חייל ביישן, נבוך וחסר בטחון עצמי מגיע לרבנות הצבאית היישר מהטירונות ומנסה למצוא את מקומו בשרשרת הפיקוד. בדרך הוא פוגש קלגסים, צוררים וגם שני קברנים טובי לב המנסים לעזור לו ולתת כמה עיצות טובות בדרך.
סיפור ארוך, לא מתמסר אך בהחלט נוגע ללב על עולם הדת, על הצביעות שבו ועל אופי האדם שאינו ממש משתנה אך מתחשל וכשנראה כי הדברים מתחילים להסתדר עבורו, קורה מה שקורה והגורל לוקח לידיו את הארועים ועושה בם כרצונו.
אוטוביוגרפיה מורחבת ועשירה בסיפורים, ביטויים ומסקנות מרתקות שהסעירו באותם זמנים את חובשי הכיפות אשר הכפישו את הספר ומתוך סקרנות החלטתי לקוראו.

I read this book fifteen years ago or more, and was actually hired to translate it. In the end, the editor who commissioned the translation left the publishing house, the man who replaced her took one look at the book and decided it would never sell, and that was the end of it. Unaccountably I lost the electronic copy of the book, and the one hard copy I had was missing a hundred pages or more, so this important, even prophetic book will remain unavailable to English readers.
