The edition I'm reviewing is a 1938 copy that was not leatherbound. The cover is the same as this edition.

For some reason I skipped past series of books like these when I was young as I progressed quickly to more difficult non-fiction books. Thus, not having a knowledge of childhood fables and tales was a gap that I eagerly sought to fill when I saw this series for sale.

While the writing is almost 100 years old and would be a bit of a tough slog for children, for adults like me, it was more annoying than unreadable.

I have to say that I enjoyed reading the full version of Aladdin, Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves and stories by Hans Christian Andersen. I had heard or seen adaptations of them, but never read the actual story.

I recommend this book for teenagers and adults, but it would be a tough read for young children. You could read it to them, explaining as you go, but I wouldn't just hand them the book and expect a child to enjoy it.

Finally, I used this book at a bathroom book, which is why it took months to read. The short stories loaned themselves well to short sittings that were interrupted frequently.

The illustrations aren’t that great, but I read some fairy tales by authors I’ve never read before, so that was a plus!

Wonderful! Just wonderful! These are children's stories, some by well-known authors like Charles Dickens, some from folktales, but they speak to the heart. The Hans Christian Andersen stories may bring tears to your eyes.

Read and enjoy, and imagine yourself young!

This was a fun read; different old fairy tales and stories. I really liked the writing style in this book. It was so 'olden' and made it that much more fun to read :D
However, I did find that some of the stories were pretty much exactly the same, just using different character names.

But still intriguing :D
