This pattern identification book places at your fingertips illustrations and sources for over 4,000 pieced patterns. It is user-friendly and is great for identifying patterns in quilts and for furnishing inspiring possibilities for quiltmakers.
As the author points out it is unwise to be didactic about quilt names as the facts are elusive, not every pattern has a name, there is no correct name for any design, and some of the traditional quilt blocks we take for granted are from the nineteenth century actually have short histories! It would take me a lot of work to find a name for some of my blocks or a block illustration for a block name, e.g., Ocean Waves. - The Preface to the reprinted Edition is a very interesting history of published quilt blocks from magazines, newspapers and mail order departments from the 1830’s to 1970’s. After 1970 the number of patterns became a deluge and would be a full time job to collate.
