Not only is author, Lori Mahler, a doctor of naturopathic medicine and an holistic nutritionist, she’s also a “graduate” of the program she espouses in these pages.
Over the years, I’ve read a LOT of books on weight loss. It’s been a lifelong struggle and until recently, success has not been a visitor. Intermittent fasting granted me an opportunity to break thru plateaus that had been heretofore impervious. In the last 3 years I’ve managed to lose in excess of 150 lbs but am now stuck - big time stuck.
Some of this is probably related to the fact I needed multiple courses of steroids to manage lupus and RA flare ups. My gut is telling me that there’s more to it. After reading SECRETS TO SUSTAINABLE WEIGHT LOSS, I have found new information that makes good sense to me.
Dr. Mahler provides actionable steps for resetting your metabolism, cleaning your biome, setting reasonable goals and measuring your progress. It’s quite stringent to begin with: no sugar at all in any form, no grains, very limited and only plant carbs, no alcohol, coffee, soda, full fat dairy. The focus is on whole foods: lean protein, leafy greens, healthy fats and low glycemic fruits that are consumed 3-5 times per day, 3-4 hours between each meal or snack. People are encouraged to not eat anything that came from a can, bag or pre packaged source.
What interests me most in this book is Mahler’s deep look into the causes behind weight gain and the reasons why it’s so difficult for some to lose it. She disagrees with some standards accepted by conventional medicine and offers clear explanations why. Additionally, there are natural supplements without side effects, (according to her), noted that can be used in place of Ozempic that I want to investigate further.
I was intrigued enough by this book to look up the educational requirements for a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine and was shocked to find it’s more rigorous than the MD we’re used to. If you have struggles with weight loss and are looking for something new or different avenues to explore that are firmly rooted in science, this book could be just what you’re looking for📚
I learned a few things. Some of it didn't gel but the sensible stuff made a lot of sense. In my experience cutting out glutton helped stabilize my hormones but that's just me. Of course I stopped using seed oils a very long time ago and that may also help too.
