when her parents died in a home invasion and no family members stepping up to take her in, valeria was left feeling unwanted and unloved and forced to live in an orphange until she turned 18. one of the few things that made her time there bearable? befriending and falling in love with camila, the beautifully broken and quiet girl with an affinity for butterflies. when camila is adopted and forced to leave the orphanage, valeria’s world is completely shattered. when valeria finally turns 18, she swears that she will do anything to find camila. on halloween night, her journey leads her into a world of depravity she could have never imagined.

when i saw that nouha was accepting applications for arc readers for her sapphic dark romance, i literally RAN to apply.

i absolutely devoured and loved this novella in one sitting. i love that there were dual povs and it alternated between past and present, which i felt really helped with the story feeling complete and not leaving me with any questions. one of the things that i love about nouha’s writing is that no matter the length of the novel, you can always feel the love and relationship between her characters. speaking of the relationship, the spice was top tier and perfectly balanced with the plot of the story. i really really hope that she writes more ff romance because i will pick them up every. single. time.

the only thing that took my rating down from a five was the pacing at the end of the book. it honestly felt like the majority of the book was perfectly paced until it hit the very end. when the climax of the story came it felt like it ended so quickly. i wanted more female rage and revenge because god, it felt like both the characters deserved it. especially ronnie.

This was such a beautiful story! Honestly I would read a full length novel of them. I’m constantly impressed by authors who manage to write a novella with such a compelling a plot and smut so hot you start sweating. Getting that balance right is HARD and Nouha nails it every single time!

We desperately need more sapphic dark romances, so I am very happy that Nouha wrote this!! 😮‍💨

Huge thank you to the author for arc in exchange for my honest review.

Dark sapphic, a little messy, very hot, far too short!

This novella knows exactly what it wants to be: sexy, mysterious, and dripping in tropes—and honestly, I’m not mad about it. Mourning Wings drops us into a gothic-feeling estate, a missing girl mystery, a ten-year heartbreak, and then hands over a masked dommy woman who makes threats sound like foreplay.

Valeria and Camila’s backstory has real emotional weight—two girls in an orphanage, pulled apart too soon. A decade later, Valeria is still chasing shadows and ends up at the infamous Whitmore Estate with her best friend, looking for answers and maybe closure. Instead, she finds Ronnie: masked, cryptic, and clearly already watching her.

Which brings me to my main issue. So much of the story feels like it’s already happened off-page. I had questions. The story skips over the setup and sprints to the tension. And I don't know if this is all because there's a full-length coming soon, or not. But as a reader, it is challenging to only anticipate an entire concept of a story when there are only breadcrumbs.

And listen, the tension is good. The atmosphere? Impeccable. The pacing? Chaotic. The sex? Delivered. It’s giving novella-as-foreplay-for-a-full-length, which unfortunately made it feel rushed and undercooked in parts—but I am intrigued.

Give me more of Valeria. More of Ronnie. More answers. But especially, more time. I will be reading the full-length. Until then, this is only 3 stars but with the potential for re-evaluation.

✨ALC audiobook Review ✨

Let me start by saying, this is my first Sapphic book and it will not be my last. I loved everything about this audiobook. The narrators, the story / plot and the speed in which everything came together. This is a novella so obviously it’s shorter in listening time however it did not feel rushed IMO.

This was the first time I’ve listened to these narrators… I’m always a little nervous with new to me narrators but they did amazing. I enjoyed listening to them voice the characters.

This book had a thriller / mystery vibe going on that I found interesting. I liked the twist and turns the story took that kept me wondering what was coming next. Normally that’s not my genre but mixed with the dark romance aspect and the narrators giving the characters personalities, I couldn’t stop listening at times. I will admit, I wanted more but that’s only me being greedy with the story.

Do I recommend? Absolutely, yes!

So this was my first sapphic romance and I honestly didn’t know what to expect but it’s by my girl @nouha and anything she writes I’m immediately reading it. This is a perfect murder mystery read just in time for spooky season and it’s definitely something you can finish in one sitting 😮‍💨 ! Valeria and Ronnie were the definition of opposites attract and I was here for it. The whole stalker vibes ??? YUUUUUM 🙂‍↕️😮‍💨 and the spice ??? 🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️🤸🏻‍♀️. I love them so much 😭😭😭😭 I hope we get more of them 🥹🥹 thank you Nouha for giving me the opportunity to read your book once again 😭 !!!! I love these two so much 😭😭

ARC review: I know this was a novella, however there was a lot of details I felt were left out that could’ve added to this story. I found myself trying to make the connections between characters and actions because it got lost or was never mentioned.

Valeria and Ronnie need a full length story, and maybe that was what was missing for me! The overall idea of the story is good, but was extremely rushed for me.

However, I would love to see more sapphic dark romances - so probs to that!

Normally, I am not one for sapphic romances. They just have never really pulled me in, but when I tell you that anything Nouha writes, I will read, I mean it. The depth of the story and the chemistry between Ronnie and Valeria is just amazing. I love the spooky vibes, surveillance, and stâļking elements in this book. You would never know that this is Nouha's first time writing a FF romance.

I really enjoyed this! A fun story idea, I just really wish it was longer 😂
I tandem read with audio which was done in duet, I do love when they do that! This is a dark romance so be sure to check content warnings before reading.

Written in first person with 2x POV’s. Narrated by Avery Caris & Valentina Ortiz (duet). Dual Timelines, Stalker, Masc/Femme, Memory Loss. 3x Spicy Scenes.

“Fuck, princesa. You’re going to be the reason for a hundred deaths once I get a taste of you.”

This was an impulse buy, and happily, I ended up liking it, despite the fact that it's a novella. Like almost every novella I read, I ended it wishing that it was longer, and that we'd had more time with the characters and more time to flesh out the plot and the story. But this definitely ended better than the last novella I read, so I can at least be thankful for that.

Valeria and Camila fell in love as orphans in a home when they were children. Camila was abruptly taken away when she was 17, and Valeria has been searching for her ever since. Ten years later, Valeria finds herself on the mysterious and dangerous Whitmore Estate with her best friend, chasing down a lead, where she encounters a sexy, masked woman. This book quite obviously exists to be a collection of tropes and ideas and sexy scenes, and I can't be really mad about it. There are several things that the author either doesn't bother to explain, or I missed the explanation. Like... why did Ronnie start watching Valeria? Why was she on her radar even before the party at the Whitmore Estate? Why'd she install the cameras? Why didn't we SEE that part of the story? There's also the fact that Valeria has been researching mysterious things happening at the Whitmore Estate, but when she goes there and sees shady stuff happening, she does nothing and tells no one? Even though she works with the police? The book didn't seem very interested in all that. The book was interested in having a dommy masked lady gently menace the main character in a creepy house, and then fuck her silly.

...And happily, I was interested in that too. Lol. No notes, this was hot. Every time I came across a detail that didn't make sense, or that I wanted more information on, I quickly got swept away by how sexy Ronnie and Valeria were. I'm a simple bitch, sorry. There's a twist that you know is coming because, well, you're reading a book, and I can't complain about how obvious it was. I do wish the mystery aspect had been a little more robust, but again... that obviously wasn't what the book was concerned with.

Listened to the audiobook as read by Avery Caris and Valentina Ortiz and I REALLY loved it. It's narrated in duet, which was the main reason I bought this, and gah, it was so good. I loved both their voices, but especially Ronnie. I have to say, this book did do that annoying thing, where a character would say something in another language, and then the prose would give you a direct translation. I always find that so awkward and clunky, and it's even more so when you're listening to it, rather than reading it. But otherwise, the audio version was lovely. I had a good time with this! An easy rec if you're looking for a dark sapphic romance that's sexy and short. Adjust your expectations and you'll probably enjoy it.

The full review is available on my blog: Wine Cellar Library

The first 90% of the book was fantastic. I was prepared to rate it 4.5 stars, possibly even 5. The sordid horror house vibes were exciting. The spicy scenes were tantalizing, and the early character development was compelling.

Unfortunately, the ending was so rushed, rather unbelievable, and left too many loose ends. It’s as though once the smut started, the plot was thrown to the wayside. What happened to Isabel? What about the adopted brothers? There was no resolution to these questions–just a haphazard guess as to where they might be. There was not much explanation about what was going on in the house, which I had been so excited to learn. There was no mention of what happened after the climactic ending, just more smut. It didn’t end on a cliffhanger; it just felt incomplete.

This is the first book in a series, so maybe the answers will be given in a later book, but couldn’t there have been some resolution to the conflicts in this book aside from what became of Camila? Or some hint that the answers will come later? Hopefully, the next book in the series will provide some clarity.

I would like to thank the author and Luna Literary PR for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Sadly, the book just was not for me.

Mourning Wings is a dark, stalker, sapphic romance novella that kept me intrigued and had me weak in the knees! Nouha Jullienne is a new to me author and I thoroughly enjoyed her writing style and these characters! I had suspicions of where things were going and had my theories questioned a few times but it ended up going exactly where I thought it would.

This was narrated in duet style by Avery Caris and Valentina Ortiz. I loved Avery in this one and everything that she brought to Valeria’s character. Valentina Ortiz was also new to me and she did not disappoint! I loved the sultry tone of her voice and she sucked me in from the second I heard her. The pacing at the end was a little rushed in my opinion but overall, I loved this story and it reminded me that I need more sapphic romances in my life!

Mourning Wings by Nouha Jullienne was dark, intriguing, erotic, and well-written.
Admittedly, this isn't my usual read but I didn't hate it. It was a quick, engaging novella and I have only a few complaints. I understand that for the length of this story, choices had to be made, but I needed a little more. I wanted to know where Camila came from, why she was nearly mute, why the Whitmores felt the need to adopt orphans, and because our BFF Isabel was so important to the story, in the end, she deserved more closure. Also, why were the Whitmores doing what they were doing, as the story hinted at their motivation, but it was left unexplored.
The spicy scenes were VERY spicy. I need more time and investment within the context of the story before those kinds of things work for me, but that is a personal preference.
The setting was done very well and the creepiness was evident.
Some repeated phrases caught my attention.
Overall, It was a good read and if this is your genre, then definitely give it a shot. The author is worth checking out.

Audiobook review ✨
Narrated in duet by Avery Caris and Valentina Ortiz

Okay this was such a huge miss for me. I was so excited for a dark sapphic read but it fell short. It had so much potential with the dark secret of the Whitmores.

Also my eyes were rolling to the back of my head on multiple occasions. Like y’all are in danger but sure let’s stop to fool around? The ending was rushed and didn’t seem believable. Just no. Sorry this wasn’t it.

The narration was good. Avery Caris was amazing. Wasn’t a fan of how Isabel’s voice was played when her and Valeria were speaking to each other. Isabel’s voice sounded super scripted and like it didn’t blend well.
Ronnie’s voice and Portuguese was great.

Thanks to Nouha & BNA for the ALC!

the most beautiful sapphic story i've read this year to date, possibly even ever😭

when i saw this was a dark sapphic novella,i thought its just darkness it's going to be a real mindf*ck but i was so wrong. so so wrong. this is the most beautiful story i think ive read in a long time!! what is it with queer romance that is just so beautiful? i'll never get over the beautiful nuance that sits in queer romance, will forever be my favourite!

i fell in love with veronica & valeria from the beginning,i didn't even expect the twist that came but when i tell you i audibly cried, sobbed actually... i feel like i said i knew it but i definitely didn't but this story definitely confirmed everything i always said... there is so much beauty in darkness.
this story is the epitome of that statement!

this is my first of nouha's books and i don't think it will be the last that is for sure! the writing style is beautiful & all of the quotes,i couldn't even pick a favourite! the story feels like such a beautiful short story and although dark (ish) elements it was truly overpowered for me by the love both valeria and veronica fell for each other, although veronica (ronnie) may be classed as morally grey, tbh she was no where near a red flag for me,just a pretty shade of pink!!

i guess i'll share ratings but this book is my roman empire for the foreseeable xo

characters? 5⭐️ they're written beautifully!! i love them so much, easily up there with some of my favourite fmc's to date!!

plot?? 5⭐️although a novella, easily an incredibly written plot line & the storyline developed so well in such a great time! the pacing of the story was beautiful,it fit perfectly with not super diving straight in but the pacing developed speed as the story did and i loved that aspect of the story!!

spice?? 🌶️🌶️🌶️ she's not a super spicy little novella by any means and is more plot heavy,HOWEVER,the spice that is there is delicious,it also feels very relavent and very real and like fantasy type shit like it's things that actually happens in wlw realtionships!!

overall??? 5⭐️ such a beautiful novella,i thoroughly enjoyed it & can't wait to read more like this one this year!! but also, this is going to be hard to replace for me on the top spot for sapphic novellas!! literally highly recommend this story to like any dark romance FF fans for sure!! just a real raw connection between two women,it's beautiful🩶

Valeria and Ronnie’s story is short and spooky and the perfect read for spooky season especially!

While trying to uncover secrets and lies about someone from her past, Valeria finds herself in potential danger. And when Ronnie comes to her rescue more than once, you can feel the sparks flying between these two!

I loved how dark and mysterious this book was, along with all of the spice that came along with them. I would love to see them in a longer book so that we can get more of their story! Or even as side characters for another couple.

Avery Caris and Valentina Ortiz did a fantastic job with this novella. They are both new to me narrators and I can’t wait to listen to more. Both brought all the spooky vibes to this book, and when the spicy times were happening, my god I was sweating!

Valeria is strong willed and will do whatever she can to find out what happened to Camilia. Ronnie has one mission is life and that is to take down the Whitemores and whatever is going on behind those mansion doors.

I absolutely DEVOURED this book! Unfortunately work got in the way of I would’ve read it in one sitting. The story kept me on my toes and I was waiting to see what happened next. Mourning Wings by Nouha Jullienne is a dark sapphic novella that I listened to on audio narrated by Avery Caris and Valentina Ortiz. This is the first book in the Whitmore Legacy series.

This is the first book of Nouha's that I have read, and it won't be my last. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Valeria and Ronnie. I loved getting both of their points of views throughout the book.

I can't wait for Nouha to announce the next book in the series. I am intrigued and can't wait to dive into this world more.

Avery and Valentina did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for a dark sapphic romance.
