As a new crush develops and a friend goes missing, a young woman who loves old movies stumbles into the plot of one in this quirky short story from USA Today bestselling author Alicia Thompson.

Time rewinds at the video store—the clerk is always hot and grumpy, and kindly retiree Mr. Hoffman rents the same thing every week. Audrey hangs around for both these reasons. But when her fellow film buff fails to appear, she goes to his house over the protests of her flannelly video store crush, who knows more than he lets on. It’s just like a movie. And she’s worried about the twist.

Alicia Thompson’s A Classic Case is part of Busybodies, a collection of quirky mysteries featuring amateur gumshoes who stumble upon peculiar cases. Calling all snoops! Read or listen to each arresting story in a single sitting.

Okay, so this being the last book in the series, I was really hoping for more mystery with a hint of thrilling and less chilling. But, hey, as a light romance? I'll admit it—it was actually pretty cute! The setting was charming, and the whole thing was just an easy, breezy read. Not what I expected, but if you're in the mood for some lighthearted romance and bit of mystery, this one’s got you covered.

Alicia Thompson (Love in the time of Serial Killers) may have written my favorite from the Busybodies collection-“A Classic Case”.

Maybe it was the nostalgia? 💞

Audrey looks forward to checking out a movie from what may be the last remaining video store, every Wednesday at 2 PM.

She enjoys visiting with kindly retiree Mr. Hoffman who rents the same movie every week. And, she has a bit of a crush on the cute but grumpy clerk.

But when her fellow film buff fails to appear, she worries that something may have happened to him and she insists to her video store crush, that she needs to check on him.

But the clerk seems to know more than he is letting on. And that worries Audrey too.

Busybodies, is described as a collection of quirky mysteries featuring amateur gumshoes who stumble upon peculiar cases. Read or listen to each cozy story in a single sitting.

“Audrey always looked forward to Wednesdays. That was the day she biked to Keep It Classic, the local video rental store stocked only with old-timey film…

It was also the day she saw him.

Not that he cared at all about seeing her. She could count on one hand the number of words he’d said to her beyond the ones he had to as part of his job. That’ll be four fifty. Receipt is in the bag. Movie’s due back by the seventh, but if you think you’re going to be late, just give me a call.

Grant. That was his name, which she knew only because she’d heard Mr. Hoffman use it.”

Audrey, as in Hepburn. Grant, as in Cary. Classic videos. What could all this mean? Actually, it means a charming story about an awkward young woman who is crushing on the guy at the video store and also looking forward to her weekly interaction with the aforementioned old Mr. Hoffman who shows up every Wednesday at 2pm to renew his copy of ‘She Who Laughs Last’.

When asked, Mr Hoffman tells Audrey that routines make the world go round. If he doesn’t turn up one Wednesday, check the obituaries because he’ll be dead.

So of course, one Wednesday arrives without a visit from Mr Hoffman, and Audrey can’t seem to convince Grant that this could be serious.

‘Mr. Hoffman,’ Grant said, ‘once saw me taking out the trash and said it inspired him to make me a pallbearer at his funeral. He told me to make sure they played “At Last” by Etta James because that’s what everyone in town would be thinking when he finally keeled over. He wanted ‘Get Off My Lawn’ engraved on his headstone to scare kids away from standing on his grave. He’s an eighty-six-year-old man. He jokes like that’ .”

Audrey isn’t convinced, so when Grant goes to the back room, she sneaks a look at the rental computer and finds Mr Hoffman’s address.

The rest, as the say is mystery. It’s a delightful short cosy that covered love, young and old.

Nostalgic and sweet!

It’s no secret that I took a few months off of reviewing this year. In a Hail Mary attempt to meet my Goodreads reading challenge goal I downloaded the Amazon Original Busybodies collection of short stories.

First up…the one with highest rating!

I have not read any of Alicia Thompson’s books (as I believe she is a romance author), but I sure enjoyed this quirky short story!

Audrey loves Wednesdays for two reasons: She gets to see the hot clerk at the video store and she talks to retiree Mr. Hoffman, who rents the same movie every week. When Mr. Hoffman is a no-show one Wednesday, Audrey becomes very worried. Despite the protests of her crush, she goes to Mr. Hoffman’s house to look for clues. However, Grant (the hot video clerk) knows more than he lets on.

I listened to the audiobook read by Alicia Thompson and Helen Laser. I really enjoyed this format and highly recommend it!

Cute

Well this is pretty cute I thought. I liked the character of Audrey and Grant and even though there wasn't really a big squishy plot it's still good.

Well, my full review is this is still very cute but I think as others pointed out it’s not really a cozy mystery. It just seems to be a romance so because of that I can see why it didn’t really land that well with everybody who read it. I definitely liked the other books in the series more because I think a lot of them took the cozy mystery and ran with it and some of them had a very dark cozy mystery angle to them, which was very much appreciated.

Busybodies Collection

Source: Audible via KindleUnlimited
Dates Read: 10/18/24 - 10/22/24
Average Stars: 3 Stars

Staged - Elle Cosimano - 2.5 Stars - Lyda, Dani - This may have suffered from being too quick. There’s only so much you can do in 43 pages so the mystery was figured out very quickly.

The Reunion Dinner - Jesse Q. Sutanto - 4.5 Stars - Josephine Ying and Family - Now THIS is how you do a short mystery. I was hollering in the car at the twists. And my jaw dropped at the conclusion. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Crime of Fashion - Emma Rosenblum - 2 Stars - ??? - Way too many characters and they were boring. I will admit the fashion world is not my thing so it is difficult to get my interest.

The Nosy Neighbor - Nita Prose - 3 Stars < /i> - Marge, Doris - This one had me messed up. Imagine living across from a psychopath ".

One Lucky Subscriber - Kellye Garrett - 3 Stars - Kennedy, other players, “Kid” - Another meh story for me. The premise was interesting but the characters feel flat. I did like the twist though.

A Classic Case - Alicia Tompson - 3.5 Stars - Audrey, Grant, Mr Hoffman - This one leaned a lot more romance than thriller to me, even with the “missing” Character. The characters were cute and it was nice to learn a little something about them.

It was interesting to see just how misguided a main character could be. I guess ultimately it was a cute story.

Do you remember that time you thought I killed that old man who came to the shop every Wednesday, and then said yes to going on a date with me when I asked you in his kitchen, in which we broke in and overfed his cat?” has to be the best meet-cute ever.

the setup…
Every Wednesday, Audrey bikes to her favorite video rental store, Keep It Classic, which only stocks vintage movies. The day and time is important because that’s when sweet old Mr. Hoffman comes in to renew the same movie starring 1960s starlet Katia Kelly. And then there’s Grant, the store owner who she has a bit of a crush on. However, on this Wednesday, Mr. Hoffman doesn’t show up. Grant assures her he’s fine but Audrey’s not convinced and sets out to do her own bit of snooping.

the heart of the story…
Audrey may be out of her league but her heart’s in the right place. Her efforts to find out whether Mr. Hoffman is in trouble lead to some scary moments. Even though her “relationship” with the man was limited at best, he was still important in her life. And so is Grant.

the narration…
Helen Laser has become one of my favorite narrators and she shines here. The storytelling was such that she gave nothing away while giving perfect voices to Audrey and Grant.

the bottom line…
This is such a nice landing for the final story in this collection. Audrey is that person who resorts to being a busybody for all the right reasons and everyone should have an “Audrey” looking out for them. I loved the ending.

A delightful mystery just like in the movies that Audrey likes to rent from Grant's vintage film rental shop.

I really enjoyed this short story. It was the perfect amount of screwball comedy, murder mystery, and a hint of romance.

Absolutely loved this little story. It was so fun, and the romance was just the kind I like — 2 outsiders finding each other. I also enjoyed how low stakes the mystery was. Are we really all that worried about an old man who constantly jokes about being on his deathbed?? This was the kind of cozy, romantic mystery that is both sweet and satisfying. I’d love to see the author write a full-length mystery!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

Love the “play” on words in the title (see what I did there!?🤣😂). This one is a good mystery that I liked right away and rings true to the busy body vibe in this series with a splash of romance.

*I had the pleasure of reading this as part of a collection, so my review is about the collection as a whole, rather than the individual story*

Growing up as an avid watcher of Murder, She Wrote, this collection was right up my alley. I don't read as many short story collections as I maybe should, but when I saw rhe lineup of authors, I knew I had to check this out.

Each story is a completely standalone tale. My favourites were the first 3 stories, Staged, The Reunion Dinner, and Crime of Fashion. I felt like The Nosy Neighbor fell right in the middle. Unfortunately, I felt like One Lucky Subscriber and A Classic Case fell a bit short. I felt like the authors' voice came out more in the first 3 stories and that I got to know the characters a bit better in the short amount of time. The mysteries in the final 2 stories also weren't as compelling to me, but they were still very readable, just not my preference.

I'd recommend this collection to anyone who is a fan of Murder, She Wrote or any one (or more) of the contributing authors.

A Classic Case was an interesting read following a woman who is determined to find a missing friend.

Audrey looks forward to Wednesdays as she goes to the video store with the hot, grumpy clerk and the kindly Mr. Hoffman who rents the same movie every week. But one day she shows up and Mr. Hoffman isn't there and Grant doesn't seem concerned. Audrey knows something is wrong and even if Grant doesn't believe her, she's going to do something about it.

A Classic Case was my first book by Alicia Thompson and I enjoyed her writing style. The book opens with Audrey arriving at the store and realizing Mr. Hoffman isn't there. When she questions Grant, the store clerk, he doesn't seem concerned which Audrey finds suspicious. She decides to check on Mr. Hoffman herself and I liked the way she took initiative. Her methods though were clearly not well thought out and led to some hilarious results. The story ended up going in a direction I wasn't expecting but I did ultimately enjoy it.

Overall A Classic Case was an enjoyable read and I will definitely be checking out more of the author's books in the future.

This was easily the cutest story in this collection with its adorable touch of romance and just a hint of mystery.

A classic movie buff, Audrey always goes to the video rental store on Wednesdays and she looks forward to meeting octogenarian Mr Hoffman who comes every week to renew the same classic movie. Audrey finds herself drawn to the store owner Grant but he is always really formal with her until the day Mr Hoffman does not turn up and Audrey senses he knows more than he is saying.

The mystery in this one turned out to be adorable as was the interaction between Audrey and Grant when they get together to 'solve' it. A lot of classic vibes and a throwback to the old fashioned ways of doing things. I loved it all.
