Wounded in France during the Great War, Mark Blaine returns to Boston in 1919 to recuperate and prepare to re-enter Harvard College. An urgent plea for help from a beautiful woman proves far more attractive than studying history, so Mark agrees to return to France to learn the fate of the woman’s brother, a fellow soldier. Mark quickly discovers that not everyone in the Old World wants the past brought to light.
The story seemed to drag somewhat at the beginning, yet the interest appealed more as it progressed. The aftermath in France proceeding from the war was interesting and the discoveries revealed seemed very realistic. The conclusion was unexpected.
