With a riveting plot and sympathetic main characters, Unexpected Witness is guaranteed to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

I'm not usually a suspense reader, but I couldn't resist picking up Unexpected Witness. Zeller creates a plot that hooks you from the first page and keeps you turning the pages. The constant shadow of danger, as well as betrayal and deception, creates a tale that makes you unable to put the book down.

The cast of characters was well-written, from the compassionate Mila and protective Roarke, to the dedicated Brodie and adorable Xander, to the nefarious and despicable villains.

As always, Zeller integrated an element of faith. This time, readers are reminded that, even in dangerous and hard times, God is never absent.

I expected Unexpected Witness to fully deserve five stars, but I did not anticipate how much I would enjoy it. This is a story for every reader who appreciates Christian romantic suspense.

Wow! This story starts off right away with the suspense and doesn’t stop until it’s over. It’s literally danger around every corner, and I also found myself looking over my shoulder a few times, you know just in case. Mila is a nurse and one night on her way to her car she accidentally witnesses a murder. And worse the murderer sees her witness it. With a quick dash to her car she gets in and takes off towards the police station. But the murderer is right behind her trying to ram her car off the road. Luckily she makes it to the police station where she meets Roarke. The police decide to have Mila stay with Roarke and his mother and nephew and have round the clock protection. Roarke is not happy about this but does as he is told. As he is protecting Mila they get to know one another but will they make it out alive? Like I said, this was such a great book! The suspense was really well done. I loved Mila and Roarke. And I also loved all the Christian content. If you love Christian Suspense Romance, you need to read this one!

Fun new author to start reading (after a solid 18 months of intending to!). It’s a solid suspense story, and I had a hard time figuring out who all the bad guys were! I only suspected the last one revealed at the end once, to immediately dismiss the idea. Ha…clever. Having a criminal ring active made the story more interesting as it wasn’t only one bad guy to catch. It sure ups the stakes when they keep on coming!

I’m definitely going to be eager to read Brodie and Londyn’s story next year.

Imagine stepping into a scene straight out of a thriller—dark night, a clinic parking lot, and the chilling realization that you’re about to witness a crime that could shatter your life. This is exactly what Nurse Mila Casey faces in Unexpected Witness -- a masterclass in suspense and character development.

Mila’s world shifts dramatically from the mundane routine of nursing to a terrifying struggle for survival after witnessing a murder. As she escapes a crazed killer, she discovers a strength she never knew she had. The depth of her character is beautifully crafted; she embodies resilience and compassion, revealing that true bravery often emerges in vulnerability. As she navigates her fears, she grapples with her thoughts: “She struggled to keep it together. Reminded herself that she needed to relinquish her grip on all her worries and give them to the Lord. Despite the fact she repeatedly took back those worries as soon as she’d released them.” This inner conflict resonates deeply, echoing the timeless wisdom found in Philippians 4:6-7, which encourages us to be anxious for nothing and to present our requests to God, who grants us peace. Amidst the chaos, her faith remains her anchor, inspiring her to consider others even in her perilous situation: “This could be an opportunity to share about God’s love.”

Roarke Brenneman—the rugged protector with a heart that’s anything but hardened. Initially wary and standoffish, he becomes an unlikely ally for Mila, and their relationship develops in the most heartwarming way. The push and pull of their connection is electric, forged in the fires of danger but blossoming into something deeper and more profound. It’s a romance that breathes life into the story, bringing warmth to an otherwise chilling backdrop.

The Brenneman family adds layers of richness to the narrative, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that starkly contrasts the looming threat outside their ranch. You can feel the heart in every interaction, especially with young Xander, whose innocence injects a sense of hope into the chaos.

As for the suspense, buckle up! Zeller skillfully navigates twists and turns that keep you guessing until the very last moment. The tension is palpable, and I found myself racing through the pages, desperately wanting to see how Mila and Roarke would evade the dangers closing in around them.

I deeply appreciate how Zeller weaves devotion to God, His Word, and family into the fabric of the story, creating a rich and authentic backdrop. Mila and Roarke’s journey highlights not only their struggle for survival but also the transformative power of love, trust in God, and dependence on Him. Their convictions shine brightly, illuminating even the darkest moments.

Unexpected Witness delivers a captivating mix of suspense, romance, and inspiring faith that keeps you hooked. Zeller has crafted an unforgettable story that will keep you on the edge of your seat while tugging at your heartstrings. If you’re looking for an engaging read that combines excitement with genuine emotion, this book deserves a prime spot on your reading list!

I received a digital ARC of Unexpected Witness from the author. I am not required to write a positive review in any way or for any reason. My honest and unbiased opinions expressed in this book review are my own. My review focuses on the writing style, the pacing, and the story’s content, ensuring transparency and reliability.

What a suspenseful read!!! The story had me on the edge of my seat shortly after it began and kept me there until the end as Penny unraveled the details.

The characters were very well done. The story held my attention so well that I had a hard time stopping even when needing to.

Just when I thought they might catch a break and enjoy a day of peace, it quickly turned to chaos. I highly recommend this if you enjoy romantic suspense.

Sweet romance. No inappropriate scenes. No crime gore.

I hope there are more stories, for the two other brothers!

I love Ms. Zeller’s historical romance books and was excited to read this romantic suspense offering. This expertly crafted story, with plenty of mystery and suspense along with a dash of second chance romance, met and surpassed my expectations. The well-paced, intriguing plot populated with danger, deception, and several unexpected twists kept me engaged and caught up in the action from beginning to end. Advancing the story are realistic, well-crafted characters, main and secondary, who you can easily connect with and root for. I love independent heroine Mila and cowboy protector hero Roarke, but I had a really hard time even liking Brittaney no matter how hard I tried! I appreciate the strong faith thread with reminders of God care and guidance no matter how difficult the circumstances. Ms. Zeller rocked the romantic suspense genre with this one! Highly recommend!

Wow! This is an amazing book! I was immediately drawn into the story. The suspense was thrilling. I was very surprised at who the perpetrators were.

The characters are written brilliantly! I liked all of them (except for the bad guys). The Brenneman family works well together. Rourke is a protector and provider. Aileen is nurturing and sweet. Xander is adorable! Mila is incredible! Despite her traumatic childhood, she is compassionate and kind. Her survival skills deserve merit.

As always, faith in God is prevalent throughout the book. I liked how Mila and Rourke connected through their faith.

Author, Penny Zeller never disappoints with her stories are thoroughly fleshed out and always squeaky clean and uplifting. I've read her contemporary fiction but mostly her historical fiction, so I really wondered about her venturing into the genre of contemporary suspense. But again, Penny has not disappointed.

Set in a small mountain community, the story opens just as the local medical clinic is closing for the day and the nurse closes the clinic and walks to her parked car. She witnesses a ghastly murder and the story gets off to a fast paced start. Terrifying experiences leap from the pages as our witness, Mila, is repeatedly in dangerous, life threatening situations.

You'll love the characters from strong men who protect and serve to a sweet grandmother and an enchanting child that will warm your heart. The danger is there lurking in the shadows.

I thoroughly enjoy this story and am looking forward to the next in the series Unexpected Danger.

Wow! I loved the fast pace action with all its twist and turns. Great characters that instantly capture your heart. Breanneman ranch is a picture perfect place with Xavier and Aileen making it a cozy, warm environment. We can’t forget the hunky Roarke who coupled with Mila makes for a great romance peppered in with mystery and intrigue. Many times I caught myself holding my breath and white knuckling the pages. Every time I thought I knew who was behind the murder a twist in the story would change my mind. This is an entertaining read that keeps you on the edge of your seat without all the blood and gore. God is woven into the story without being over done. Every page of this thrilling read is exceptional!

Mila Casey wanted a quiet life after her grandmother passed away. She moved to a small town Proghorn Falls and was a nurse in the local medical clinic. One night when leaving the clinic later than scheduled her life changed forever. The story was amazing and kept me guessing and wondering what else could happen. This turned from a who did it to a sweet love story as well. I was given this book as a ARC reader but am giving my honest opinion of the book.

Wow! Penny Zeller really knows how to hook an audience! I don't recommend starting this book at two in the morning as you won't want to put it down! The suspense in this novel was insane! With gunfights, knife fights, murder, threating notes, nearly getting run over, the action never stopped! And the ending left your draw dropped. I never saw it coming!

Nurse Mila Casey leaves work when she unexpectedly witnesses a murder dark at night in an empty parking lot. She can easily identify the killer, but the killer can also easily identify her. Now Mila's life is flipped upside down and forced to hide at the Brenneman Ranch as she is being hunted by a killer. But eventually the ranch is compromised, but with Roarke Brenneman's aid, will she survive the killers grasp?

I also loved the character's in this novel, they were awesome! Even with a looming threat, I loved the calming atmosphere from the Brenneman family, and I especially loved the family feel from Mila, Roarke, and Xander. Together, their character development was incredible to read! I also loved the the Christian elements, and the characters unwavering faith throughout the book!

What a unexpected thrilling story! Even though this is not a genre I usually read nor like 🤷🏻‍♀️ I decided to give it a try since it’s from an author I adored, Penny Zeller, and it did not disappoint! I enjoyed it immensely.

Mila Casey becomes an unexpected witness after being in the wrong place at the wrong time, as the saying goes, witnessing a murder. This story is brimming with suspense and it’s fast paced. It will keep you on your toes and looking over your shoulder at all times! There was never a dull moment within. Not a safe place in Pronghorn Falls to hide from murderers …no one to trust 🫣 You’re always suspicious of even the nice characters, a phone call, someone driving past slowly, the library,… The suspense makes you feel like you’re right there in the midst of the chaos and running for your life. Truly an awesome story!

Also, I love that the author blends faith elements here and there. Her main characters are always acknowledging God and trying to find an opportunity to spread the gospel even when it gets you in compromising situations though not knowingly of course.

This is a perfect start of a series. Therefore, if you like the Christian suspense romance genre I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. I liked it even though it’s not my favorite genre.

A small town rancher and his nephew fall in love with a nurse he was protecting.

Enjoyed being with this author again. She did a great job with her first suspense and mystery story. Mila and Roarke story was exciting from start to finish. Roarke became her protector and hero. He and his brother Bodie tried to keep her safe. Both Roarke and Mila had a lot to let go of in their pasts. But with God help and their love for each other things were layed down. So happy that Cancer gets a new mommy and daddy. So hope there a turn around in Proghorn Falls after all that's happened. Looking forward to Brodie story and maybe one for Grayson too. Looking forward to hearing more on how Roarke and Mila are doing too.

Mila can’t believe it she just saw a man she had met at the hospital, MURDERED.

Mila was a fairly new nurse at the local hospital. She had just settled in and was making it clear to everyone that she was a great nurse and would be a good member of the community.
Mila had been working late quite often lately, so she decided to take off on time for once. That is when she walked into a scene that was to terrify her for a long time. Someone was being attacked in the parking lot! She tried to call out but realized that only put her in danger. The murderer turned to her and she realized she had better get into her car and go for help quickly. Very quickly as the man was coming after her next. She got away after a confrontation and he started chasing her car. Mila was almost killed as she drove to the sheriff’s office and the sheriff put her into hiding with his brother Roarke. This is the start of a great story.

Unexpected Witness is a well written romantic suspense novel that will keep you on your toes throughout the story. The characters are well developed and “real”, I felt like I could identify with them and the way they were feeling. I also fell in love with Xander, the MMC’s nephew! Penny does a great job of showing her character’s faith (or lack of) without coming across as preachy. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I definitely recommend it!!

Wrong place, wrong time

Great story with strong characters and a complex series of events that culminate in a very surprising way. Relationships are vulnerable and sometimes betrayed. It is great for fans of crime fighting and solving puzzles in the process. And, of course, the growing romance is always fun. I really enjoyed it.

I have a little confession to make 🫣... I wasn't going to read anymore suspense, but Penny Zeller's books are just too good to resist. At every turn, you're kept guessing.

The characters and the small community feel in this book bring in a charm of their own. Each of the particular character traits that make up them are so unique, Zeller's characters are as always so real-to-life. And the backstory is so compelling! You want to keep reading just to figure out a little bit more.

Xander is so cute 😍. Of course, like any little kid, he needs to come out again at 12 o'clock and ask for something to eat to prolong the inevitable bedtime 😂. His penchant for bugs is adorable. I think he's make a great "ant" farmer, personally 😆❤️.

My favorite scene was their picnic 🫶!

Poor Xander and Spider, though 🥲. How dare the nasty criminals do that to him.

Brodie and Roarke's brotherly banter is the bomb 🤌🤣.

High-five on Mila liking bean & cheese burritos! Also, yes, *fist pump* she knows how to make her grandmother's cinnamon rolls 🤣. Cinnamon rolls are definitely to die for (I should know 😉)! Gruesome way to defend yourself 😬... but hey, most people don't have killers after them every day. So, I definitely applaud 👏 her courage.

But most of all, it was so incredible to see that Mila continued to put her trust in the Lord through it all and genuinely cared for the physical and spiritual needs of those around her. The Lord is truly all we need 💯❤️! I also love that Mila held on to the legacy of faith imparted to her through her Gramdma.

My favorite quote that impacted me in this book actually came from one of Mila's memories of her- "Serving others & being there for them are two ways we can show the love of Christ." What an incredible truth. I definitely never want to forget it.

This book is packed with wonderful scriptures and truths of having faith over fear as well.

It was nice to find such a spiritual emphasis that is becoming rare in most books these days. It was one of the best parts.

CW: Murder, Attempted Murder, Threats, Guns/Shooting, Drugs (presented always in a bad light 👍), A lot of dwelling on touches and physical appearance, one-akward "is he going to kiss me?" scenario, one semi described kiss.

Personally, the only thing I didn't prefer (compared to her other one that I read- Forgotten Identity) was that I understood that Roarke was handsome and muscular, but I don't think having that fact repeated more than once was needed. There is so much more to a man than his physical appearance. It's the heart that matters. Which I will note (Rourke was deeper than that)... and yes, I was thankful that the author pointed out that Mila liked him for more than physical appearance, but still, it was a bit much (but that is me).

This book is super clean, though, and I did appreciate that most of the kisses were non-descriptive. Roarke and Mila were so perfect for each other 🫠🩷!

My rating/ Age Recommendation:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4 out of 5 stars/ 20+ - M (Married) Mostly based on the nature of suspense....

I really enjoyed this book! Now, I'm doubly looking forward to the release of Book 2 in the Mountain Justice Series! I can't wait to see Brodie's love story, plus the suspense, of course 😉

I really enjoyed this book, the first romantic suspense by Penny Zeller. I started reading her historical romance stories and one of her contemporary romcoms a year or so ago, and I really enjoy them. But romantic suspense is my favorite genre, so I was so excited when I learned about this book.
In this story, the first in a series I recently learned (more excitement woohoo), Mila witnesses a murder as she is leaving work. She ends up being hidden on a ranch that the Sheriff Brodie's family owns, though his brother, Roarke, isn't too pleased as he is concerned for the safety of their family.
We see the story from both Mila's and Roarke's point of view.
I could definitely understand Roarke's concern, as could Mila, who didn't want to put the family in danger. I admit, that decision, along with others in the story, made me scratch my head a bit. But I loved getting to know Roarke and Brodie's family, and loved the relationship that developed between them and Mila.
The story begins with suspense and it continues throughout the story, though their are periods of calmness, though the reader, along with Mila, will wonder when danger will appear next. I will say, there wasn't anything that was too extreme or intense, but it definitely had action. There wasn't much of a mysery to solve, as the police were working behind the scenes to solve the murder and string of crimes related to the case. As a reader we only saw the bad guys when Mila was in danger. Though if you have read lots of suspense like I have, you could probably deduce some of the people involved.
And of course, the book is romantic suspense, so you know the main characters are somehow going to fall for each other. I did enjoy seeing their relationship evolve as they learned to trust each other and overcome obstacles from their past.
This was a story where the main characters were Christian and they believed and trusted in the Lord, it was part of who they were. There is a scene where they go to church and the message hits close to home for the characters.
I recommend this book and can't wait for the next book in the series.
I  received an e-copy of this book as a member of the launch team and was not required to write a favorable review. These are my own honest thoughts.

I have come to really enjoy Zeller's prairie/historical novels. She has written a couple of contemporary novels that were also good. This is her first foray into Christian suspense, and I was very curious what it would be like.

Three words: She nailed it. The book is the kind to keep you on the edge of your seat, reading as fast as you can.

She created some great characters that were genuine and likable:
Mila: nurse and innocent bystander who unfortunately witnesses a murder
Roarke: Reluctant protector at first, not extremely happy to bring danger to his mom and to his nephew he is raising, but agreed to his sheriff brother's plan to keep Mila at his ranch.
Brodie: Sheriff determined to keep Mila safe, and taking it personal when crime happens in his county.
Xander: Last, but not least. Orphan nephew of Roarke and Brodie, being raised by his uncle Roarke. Awesome little boy who added a lot to the book.

The book is filled with drama, suspense, attempted attacks, bad guys, and of course romance. I was surprised at the identity of a couple of the bad guys......and the book had more than its share of them.

Zeller has created a great suspense novel that competes well with the books by seasoned Christian suspense authors on the Christian fiction market. Hopefully she writes more in this genre'. Brodie at least needs his own story.

Special thanks to the author for an advance e-copy of this novel. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

Thanks to the author for my review copy.

I use to avoid suspense books but am finding I enjoy suspense with a romantic element. Heavy suspense I will still normally avoid. This falls into the suspense with a romantic element. The book starts with Milla witnessing a crime and finds herself in danger. When she arrives at the police station she needs to go into hiding.

This is where Roarke and his families ranch come into play. Here she should be hidden away and safe. She also meets his mother and nephew who both are special people.

Have you ever watched a mystery and something happens outside and you say to the characters don't go out, hide. Well I found a few of these moments in this book. The book flows well and doesn't get bogged down, it move forward at a good rate.

While I had some thoughts at different times about who could be involved but on the whole I was kept guessing. I look forward to more books in the series.

If you enjoy Romantic Suspense with a good story I am sure you will enjoy this book. If you are looking for the suspense rating I would equate it to a Love Inspired Suspense book.

FIrst time of reading a book by this author and it won't be my last. I enjoyed this author's style of writing and interweaving faith throughout the story. Mila was a delightful main character that had overcome a rough start in life assisted by her grandma. Faith was a vital part to her life and made her a better nurse as well. Roarke is the silent, protective of his family type. Mila goes to stay with him, his widowed mom, and orphaned nephew at the ranch after being a witness to a murder. His brother is the local sheriff (which their father had been prior to his death). His mother reminds Mila of her grandma and brings her comfort in this challenging situation. Xander is the delightful nephew that brings a sparkel to everyone.

I loved the family dynamics and the mystery that they had to solve. I had figured out most of it before the end but there were still a few surprises. There are many crooks and deceptive people involved in this small town crime ring.
