Professors Falling: Romantic Comedies in Academia #1

For the Love of Mark Twain: A Cozy Academia Friends-to-Lovers Story

Rate this book
Lucy O’Shields is comfortable. She’s the secretary for the English Department she graduated from, and the quirky circle of professors surrounding her office keeps her busy, content, and entertained. Thankfully, the hopeless-crush-at-first-sight she nursed as a student for one of these professors was squelched long ago.

Dr. Forrest Graham is uncomfortable. After ending another aimless romantic relationship, he finds his long-suppressed attraction for the department’s secretary and his former student, Lucy, much harder to ignore. Knowing she is out of bounds is doing nothing to dampen his attraction.

When tragedy strikes Forrest’s family, Lucy proves once again that her friendship is indispensable. But with new feelings simmering perilously close to love, Forrest fears losing the most important relationship in his life. At the same time, Lucy wonders if her school-girl crush has evolved into something irrepressible.

With help from their obtrusive but well-intentioned co-workers and friends, can Lucy and Forrest embrace feelings they’ve so long denied?

This is a sweet friend's to lovers slow burn and cosy romance. I loved the academic setting and all the literature references, and the friendly office environment they all worked in. It was nice seeing glimpses into the other characters lives and personalities, and being a similar age to the FMC Lucy I was really able to relate to her.

I liked that both characters had ongoing mutual pining but were fearful of embracing their feelings or changing their relationship dynamics. They worked really well together as friends and colleagues, but I loved the shift up as their romance develops albeit unexpectedly for them. It was fun that all their friends, family and colleagues could see their feelings for each other long before they realised themselves.
I liked the sprinkles of family drama, fears of loss, and the way they naturally came together.
I loved the way the team all came together near the end and took an academic approach to helping Forrest repair things, and how connected they all were. It's funny, cosy and a sweet story.

🖋️ 'He is cute, in an adorably nerdy kind of way. You know, the way us English-majors picture Mr Darcy'

🖋️"Forrest had called her perfect tonight. Not her editing abilities or her secretarial efficiencies. No just Lucy herself"

🖋️"She would feel how much he wanted her. He could no longer hide the storm of desire that had been brewing in him"

🖋️"The rest were just place holders so you can pretend you and Lucy don't have ten layers of sexual tension coming off of you at all times"

🖋️"I've spent my whole adult life making sure I never felt like this. I have no control around you. You consume me"

🖋️"You do realize two women can have a conversation that does not include talking about a man?"
"You know I know that, Edith. I'm not a total douche. I just need them to fix the shit between them"

This book was so good. I'm so glad I read it. I love academia books and I don't read them often enough.
Lucy was happy with her life but her love for her friend Forrest was the icing on the cake. She thought she would never have a chance with him but she couldn't be more wrong. I loved Lucy, she was sweet and funny and a good person, hardworking for sure and so lovable.
Forrest also had feelings Lucy but he never realized it. It took years but he finally saw that what he felt for Lucy, he never felt for anyone before. He didn't want to hurt her so he pushed her away. But by pushing her away, he was hurting them both.
I adored them together and the writing in this book was phenomenal, really good. Loved the secondary characters, all rooting for the MCs love and just wonderful people all around

If I could have stayed in college forever, I would have so connecting with two characters in this book whose lives are in academia was a breath of fresh air. For The Love of Mark Twain is a beautiful, heartwarming novel about coming to terms with the life you want for yourself instead of the one that is expected of you. Lucy and Forrest’s relationship has evolved over time, from student/professor, to colleagues who become friends, to potentially more…and it is illustrated in the most natural and sweetest way possible, but certainly not without some hiccups. Kalyn Gensic’s debut book is an uplifting read that has all of the feels with some pretty epic references to Mark Twain and a cast of characters that feel like old friends!

At first glance, the cartoon cover is super cute and cozy, definitely giving fall vibes. After reading, I can say I enjoyed the story. It had its moments that  flowed well and the academic workplace setting matched the vibes from the cover. However, deeper themes of familial trauma and self confidence were certainly present for our main characters Lucy and Forrest. Seeing them grow and express their feelings toward one another was sweet. I feel their pining was endearing because each were able to finally realize that they were worthy of being the main characters in their own love story. Overall, the road to their HEA was heartfelt. I’d recommend this to readers who enjoy friends to lovers, workplace romances with the found family trope.

Many thanks to Love Book Tours and the author for the digital review copy.

What I Liked

The small English department setting was an absolute delight. I loved getting to know the quirky cast of professors that Lucy works with. It really brought me back to my own days as a college student in an English department. Even if the quirks felt a bit exaggerated at times, it still felt pretty true to life while also being super fun.

I enjoyed the found family feeling of Lucy and her motley crew of professors. Although at times the work boundaries felt a bit crossed, ultimately I just leaned into it and loved seeing how much this group of people take care of one another.

Similarly, the cast of characters was just a ton of fun. From Lucy's college best friend to all of the professors in the office, it was a delight getting to know the unique personalities of everyone in this book.

There's a good slow burn element to the romance here, although once it catches fire it catches, if you know what I mean. Personally I'm all about pining, and the first half of this book definitely delivered there.

You know I love when a romance brings in a little something more than just two characters trying to find happily ever after. This story deals with the baggage we get from our parents in an interesting way, as both Forrest and Lucy navigate hangups their parents unwittingly created for them.

What I Didn't Like

The language, especially dialogue, sometimes felt a little stiff. Not using contractions in dialogue when people normally would shorten words (it is vs. it's, etc) is something that always pulls me out of a story, and this one definitely did that enough to slow me up at times.

I wasn't so sure about the student/college professor opening. I get that the author uses this setup to show why Lucy and Forrest both didn't really see one another as romantic possibilities, but it did feel weird to start a romance with the power differential of a student having a crush on a professor. It was just a short intro and we immediately skip to ten years in the future, but it did kind of set an odd tone that I had to work to get over before I could root for them.

Final Thoughts

Overall, For the Love of Mark Twain was a cozy love story perfect for fall reading. I enjoyed seeing the love story play out and the meddling ways of everyone around them as it did. I would recommend this for anyone who was once an English major, and to folks looking for a sweet read for autumn.

This book is hailed as a cozy academic friends to lover’s story, and I totally agree with word cozy.

I started reading on a Saturday morning with a big smile on my face, loving reading all about Lucy O’shields, and her crush, that I literally couldn’t put this novel down.

When I was at school, my English class was my favourite subject, and with loving, reading books, just like the best loved character Lucy. So for me I absolutely loved this whole story, with Lucy who is a student that took an English course, in 19th century American literature, for the love of books.

This is Lucy’s story, during her time at school, she had a mad crush on her teacher at school, professor Forrest Graham.

The new Professor, Forrest, has just been through a relationship break-up and is please that he has been offered a job as an English professor, at Paducah State University, in Western Kentucky.

One of my favourite parts in the book is when, Lucy and her best friend, giggled, saying the new professor Forrest, looks like the dashing, Mr Darcy.

The story then skips, forward, where out of the blue, her crush on professor Forrest is about to get even more heart pounding. Star pupil, Lucy gets a job in the office as a secretary, for the English Department, where she graduated, coming into contact with her crush Professor Forrest Graham.

Forrest opens up how he enjoyed a good love story by Mark Twain. But can you predict the ending to this rom-com For the Love of Mark Twain? I must admit I didn’t, see any of these things happening.

This page-turning romance novel, about Lucy O’Shields crush, to love story, I guarantee you all will deliciously love it all, and be so wrapped-up reading it, that you won’t be able to put this perfect escape novel down.

For The Love of Mark Twain by Kalyn Gensic.
This was a good read. I did like the cover. What a delightful read. Full of humour and romance. I liked the story and characters. I read this in 3 days. I did like how the friendship grew between the two main characters Lucy and Forrest. I was surprised this was a debut. I did like the writing style. I did like the academic setting. I will definitely be looking for future books by this author.

If you love a good rom-com, this is a great pick for you. It’s filled with friends-to-lovers, a cozy academia setting, and a vibrant, zany cast of supporting characters. Also, if you love a May-December romance and a good found family, it’s got that going for it, too.

It is full of humor, romance, friendship, delightfully zany supporting characters, and so much more. We get to see a lot of growth in our main character, which I love so much. The whole story isn’t just her love story, and that is so empowering and beautiful. Her life isn’t all about a guy, and it doesn’t have to be.

I also really love a lot of the tropes in this one: friends-to-lovers, found family, and cozy academia (one I’ve never read, but I’m here for!). I have mixed feelings about the age gap, especially when there is a power dynamic. Still, I didn’t mind this one because I know that despite the technicalities, secretaries have real power – which is exactly how it was set up in this situation.

While this dealt with some serious topics, such as alcoholism, verbal abuse by parents, and parental abandonment, it still managed to be a very sweet romance. It does have some mildly spicy scenes. I don’t prefer super spicy scenes, and I was okay with this. But if you only do closed-door romances, this is a little spicier than that.

I look forward to reading more by this author! I’d love to read more about this world and catch up with these characters!

This was the perfect, cosy, autumnal read I never knew I needed!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The story follows Lucy who studied at university and then goes on to work at the same university, with all her old teachers. One of whom she's had a crush on for years 🏫
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I absolutely love the friendships and the whole dynamic between the cast of characters. Everyone gets along and they are always there for one another. It really is beautiful to read and it's the kind of relationships most people really dream of having!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The characters personalities and individualities are so well described and well written. I loved hearing all the different bits and pieces about everyone, and I especially love that Miriam has somewhat of an unconventional job. Something unexpected and I just love how accepted she is by everyone. The whole cast are just such a lovable bunch! And a special shout-out to Clark, the dog, such a cutie 🐾
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The story also touches on tougher subjects like addiction and grief and the effects these things can have on other people. As well as exploring the complexities of romantic relationships ❤️‍🩹

I thought it was written really well and was well executed!

So if you're looking for a slow burn, friends to lovers, cute academia, fun book then I can't recommend this enough 💯

For The Love Of Mark Twain is the debut novel from Kaylyn. It’s always very exciting to find new authors to read. I saw the sign up for this with LBT. It ticked all my trope boxes and so I thought let’s give it a go!

FTLOMT It’s not your typical student/teacher kind of scenario, as our hero and heroine actually end up working together in the English department. Their work/friendship relationship goes on for many years, but deep down they are pining for one another and have such mutual respect for one another, which is so endearing. They face the perfect work relationship, so why would they want to ruin that. However the more they spend time outside the work place and other factors that come to a head, when that first kiss finally happens, it’s magic!

I thought the supporting characters were brilliant, and the whole English Department at Paducah State University were like one big family, supporting one another, which Forrest really needed.

"Forrest, there are moments in life when you shouldn’t be alone. Let Lucy go with you. Edith, Dr. Hubert, and I will split your classes tomorrow. Let us help you."

If you fancy supporting a new author, then do give this story a try. Written extremely well and very descriptive, this is the perfect cost read for this Fall Time.

This book was so cute! It gave off all the cutesy friends to lovers vibes and I was so here for it! This is a slow burn with all the best literature references. I loved all of those! I don’t read many books with the academic setting but I really enjoyed this one because it was also gave the office side of it. They were great friends and worked so well together so when they were both starting to get feelings it definitely made them nervous and scared. I loved them watching their relationship bloom. All side characters I really enjoyed too! Overall I really enjoyed this book and all the cosy sweet vibes it gave me!

What a lovely book that made my heart smile! Set in an English department in a small college it is at its core a story of found family, friendship, and love. Lucy has been the secretary of the department since she graduated and keeps things running smoothly. It is a place she feels comfortable and appreciated. Dr. Forrest Graham is a professor she had a crush on when she was a student but has gotten over it as they worked together, or so she thought. Forrest has kept his life a certain way and suddenly thoughts of Lucy are disrupting it, but she deserves someone better than him. Can they let go of the past and build a future? The relationships between the colleagues across the generations was a joy to read. I loved the way their interactions crossed the generations, it added depth to the story. These are people I want to hang out with. Lucy and Forrest were characters I enjoyed. Watching them step outside their comfort zone to figure out what they wanted made my heart feel all the things. This story of friends, found family and trust is one I highly recommend readers of romance add to their to be read lists.

For the love of Mark Twain! 😍 First of all, can I just say how cute and autumnal this cover is? I absolutely love it, and it really makes me want to curl up with a warm drink and get lost in its pages. 🍂📖

It was the cutest book ever! 🥰 It gave me total rom-com, friends-to-lovers vibes.  The academic setting was *chef's kiss*.  Definitely a cozy read with all the feels. 💕  Highly recommend adding this one to your TBR list!

I enjoyed both the female and male main character(Lucy and Forrest). Their relationship was like a cute warm hug to the heart and this book overal just made me smile. 😍

The romance was a slow burn, but so worth it. 😄 The side characters were amazing, I loved them so much! 😂 It had the smidgen of spice, and the found family trope always gets me. 😭  If you're looking for a good, easy read, I highly recommend it! 💯

Small town Academia with a twist of unrequited pining and family drama!

Lucy may be a rich girl but she has never used her status to further her goals. She enjoyed her college so much she stayed on once she graduated! Her mother wanted her to be a Southern Belle and marry well but Lucy would rather be curled up with a good book!

Forrest is the super smart boy from the wrong side of the tracks. He used his education to escape his alcoholic but loving father. He never seems to be able to make a relationship stick and he's fed up fending off undergraduates.

These two have literally circled each other for years. From a one sided crush, to colleagues, to friends - Lucy and Forrest are the epitome of slow-burn romance. But finally the stars have aligned, Forrest has dropped the scales from his eyes and Lucy has summoned the courage and the friend zone has been blasted apart! As usual everyone around them could see the chemistry and potential but these two were oblivious.

The secondary characters were great fun and Lucy's bestie has the most unique job I've ever read about! The family like atmosphere of this little English Department was lovely - everyone a different personality but Lucy was the glue holding them together. A cosy hug in a warm sweater in book form.

If you are looking for a cozy contemporary romance that has all the fall/autumn vibes that you need set in a college setting. References to English literature, family histories, swoon worthy main characters, and laugh out loud side characters. Then have i got the book for you.

For The Love of Mark Twain
by Kalyn Gensic
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Is the perfect book to your fall TBR list. Lucy and Forest are the perfect female and male leads that are so soon worthy you will be rooting for them to get together from page one.

The side characters are a family thru and thru, I love them all, and are a perfect support for both Lucy and Forest.

I say this with all the respect in the world, but could totally see this being made into a hallmark movie! 🍿 It might have a bit more spice than normal for a hallmark movie, but oh it’s so good.

I would rate this a 5/5⭐️ and a 3/5🌶️ tasteful done. And a 4/5 for all the feels. Would highly recommend.

Hiding in Plain Sight!

In the world of academia, especially in small liberal arts colleges, the relationships within departments and among peers creates families especially when the secretary guides, coordinates, organizes, reminds, assists, and nurtures all within the department.

And for a decade, one young secretary has been within the English Department among the family she has created, including the professor who taught her on her senior year during his first year. And…each of them have been denying an attraction that has become undeniable to the entire office, except to them.

A nostalgic book about the best reasons for small liberal arts schools : helping individuals explore and learn about their studies, themselves, and each other, to help each student become better, a better self, a better human.

And- if readers enjoy Twain, many snippets sprinkled spark charm and smiles.

Lucy O’Shields works in administration for the English Department of the Western Kentucky University she graduated from ten years previously. The office includes Dr Forrest Graham who had previously been her professor and whom she has always secretly had a crush on. Forrest is in a relationship with a fellow lecturer but feels more emotion reading about love than with his partner. Lucy is offered a promotion but this will mean she will not be working with Forrest…

This is a slow burn, cosy read relationship story which I enjoyed. I found the book easy to read and I liked the literary references, the university base and the setting of Kentucky. I also liked the cover, great autumnal colours for right now. It is perfect timing for its publication.

This is a VERY slow burn, friends to lovers romcom.
I love Lucy and her 4 loveable, bumbling, sweet professors. The relationships they have are just wonderful. They also provide many moments of comic relief!
I really enjoyed seeing Lucy come alive and realise what she wanted from herself, her profession, and her life.
Forrest sounds like the perfect nerdy book boyfriend. I loved how he had to do his research, approaching love in the same way he approaches all academia.
I do prefer my romcoms to have an epilogue, letting me know how the characters I've grown to love are getting on, so I was pleased to read a wonderful year on update here.
It's a lovely read that fans of this genre will happily fall in love with.

Academia romances are now my new fave!!

This is a book that you cant help but devour, I was super excited to pick this one up after reading the blurb which already had me rooting for our two mc's! Upon diving into this book and getting to know Lucy and Forrest I rooted for them even harder. These two were literally written for each other! I loved how the author built the tension between these two from the start.

This book had some of my favourite tropes from grumpy x sunshine to work place romance, there's truly a trope in here for everyone. I loved all the melding and extra characters it made this feel like such a cozy small town read. If you're looking for a low angst romance to devour this fall then you need to pick this one up asap, it wont disappoint.

I very much liked this book.

The author did such an amazing job of showcasing their relationship. You truly felt how their relationship was in a comfortable friendship and how they both wanted to move forward. It’s a great emotional journey for both Lucy and Forrest. Their love story undoubtedly feels so sweet and gives nice cozy vibes. The setting and side characters were a perfect complement to the overall story. The romance, while cozy and sweet, giving all those warm feels still has some very mild spice.

What an amazing debt for this author. I look forward to her future work.

Thanks for the ARC opportunity for Love Books Tours and the author. As always, this is an honest, voluntary review.

This was such a perfect cozy autumn read. Grab a blanket, some hot chocolate/coffee/tea and cozy up for this sweet story. Lucy and Forrest were so cute going from friends to lovers, slightly fearful to change their dynamics. It was such a nice journey with them as they embraced their feelings. I liked the side characters, how supportive they were of Lucy and Forrest's feelings.

I really recommend this to everyone who's after a sweet, comfort read because this debut is just perfect when you want to read a nice, warm story.

I enjoyed the academic atmosphere, the many literary references, and the friendly workplace where everyone was employed. Getting a peek into the lives and personalities of the other characters was enjoyable. This is a cozy, slow-burning romance between sweet friends and lovers. Although it came as a surprise to them, I particularly like how well they got along as friends and coworkers and how their relationship developed. The fact that their coworkers, friends, and family could recognize their feelings for one another before they did was exciting. Lucy and Forrest were two characters I really liked.

I love academia stories. Whenever I read those, I feel like I’m in school again. For this reason, For The Love of Mark Twain is such a fantastic book! Nice characters and good writing! I read this book for few days (quick read right?). In spite that this is a good book, though I have a mixed feelings about the age gap. Well, at least, I don’t mind about it for this book (no worries). Overall, I enjoy the story! Looking for the next read with academic setting and romance, then you can add For The Love of Mark Twain by Kalyn Gensic into your TBR (to be read) list.

I loved this and felt that i could see myself in Lucy. She is such a well thought out character and when you put her with Forrest the tension just boils. It is a slow burn romance but the pay off is well worth it. This is defiantly the time of me reading romance however this was a great read to curl up on the sofa with when living in blustery Scotland. I loved all of the characters and how we see them grow throughout the novel in this university setting and how eventually the two main characters realise the love that they have for each other. Can not wait for book two to come out.

What a fun friends to lover romance. A story between secretary Lucy and Dr. Dr. Forrest Graham who she has crushed on since she was a student. A great book with references to popular literature like in the title. These two were great anytime they were on paper together. They did a great job maintaining a distance from each other while wanting each other. Everyone else knew they belong together but it was great to see them try and keep their distance. I also enjoyed that they were older adults and the story focused on the friendship before the romance.

This was such a cosy, fall read we had some very sore times and I really felt for Forrest with the events that occurred but he definitely pushed Lucy away when he should of brought her closer but overall I am happy with the turn of events as i believe without this misunderstanding Lucy wouldn’t of had her career change. Definitely a great read for Autumn/Fall. Overall I definitely liked the university professor. I think overall my favourite character was Edith, I love that she strikes fear without meaning to and how she relies on Lucy to remind her to be nicer to students she was the best.

This one was a slow burn, friends to lovers, contemporary romance book. It was a really quick read for me and I found it quite a cosy romance book.

Lucy was very lovable main character and I really enjoyed reading how her relationship with Forrest bloomed. Forrest was such a geeky and hilarious main character and I loved his chapters and following his thought processes.

Really loved the one year later update at the end and the insight into how their lives and relationship was going.

Overall, a really fun, cosy and enjoyable read!

I absolutely loved this debut novel written by my dear friend. I will never turn down a slow burn, friends-to-lovers story, and this one has the added benefit of being about nerdy English majors, which appeals to me for obvious reasons. 😄 The characters are easy to root for without being overly saccharine, and the supporting cast of friends and co-workers are delightfully oddball. Recommended for anyone who’s ever pined after a professor (the timeline ensures this is not icky), questioned what the heck they’re supposed to do for their career, or secretly missed their college classes.
