AN EXHAUSTED TEACHER AND A FAKE PRIEST WALK INTO A BAR…
Emeline Jones is not looking for love. Love requires both time and energy, and her students at Desert Grace have first dibs on both. It's Emmie’s job to ensure their well-being and access to food, all while managing her own deteriorating mental health. At the end of the day, she's pouring from an empty cup.
She is, however, looking to blow off steam. Cue Las Vegas on Halloween night. And the broad-shouldered Irish guy wearing a cassock at the bar? Well, Tommy O’Connor—hot, funny, and foreign—is the answer to her prayers.
Until he abandons her in a hotel room.
But what happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay there: Tommy, it turns out, is Desert Grace's new head of school, which technically makes him Emmie’s new boss.
Can Emmie find a way to save her job, maintain her sanity, and stand by her principles to resist Tommy’s undeniable charms once and for all?
Or does the luck of the Irish have other plans?

Came for the romance, stayed for the realistic depictions of mental health struggles... and also the romance.

This book is perfect if you love...

-one-night-stands-to-lovers
-teachers making it work in a broken system
-depression representation
-fast then slow burn
-cinnamon roll FMC
-strong, supportive MMC
-Irish accents
-hilarious banter
-dorks being dorks
-puppies!

**minor spoilers below**

On Principle is definitely the most emotional of Bonnie's books so far. I could relate so much to Emmie's struggles with depression and the way she pours from an empty cup. She's cheerful, quirky, capable, and funny, all of which keep others from seeing the storm clouds brewing underneath.

Emmeline and Tommy are everything. Can a man have big "my wife" energy before the couple is even officially dating? Because that is the situation. I absolutely adore the way he clearly thinks the world of Emmie but knows there are some things she needs to deal with on her own. The damsel saves herself in this one, but Prince Charming is willing to move mountains to give her the support she needs to do it. Love love love.

I live for the cheesy jokes and witty one-liners. They're both NERDS and they're meant to be. I cannot wait for this book to be out there in the world so everyone else can share in their story, too.

Thank you so much to Bonnie to sending me an early copy of this book. My review is voluntary and all thoughts are my own.

I absolutely loved this book. It was beautifully written and cathartic in a way I didn't know I needed. The discussions about mental health seemed relevant and not forced. I loved the relationship build up between Tommy and Emmy and Emmy's personal growth. The build up of Desert Grace and the supporting characters was fantastic and cannot wait to visit Desert Grace again the future ❤️ Looking forward to more Micah, Audrey and Leila. Thank you to the author for this ARC.

ARC Review: Saying that this book changed my perspective of myself is probably dramatic, but I don't really care. Apart from the romance and Tommy (who I love and has me dreaming of alternative realities where I find a handsome Irish man) the accurate representations of depression really got to me. Depression is sometimes so much less obvious than we think and we don't always notice the way it manifests in us, and it turns out I am so similar to Emmie that I spent the last 50% of this book crying but in the best way. If we are looking for a fun yet heart warming romance please pick up On Principle. The only thing I would have changed is one more smut scene, please show me what my tommy boy can do :)

This story was a breath of fresh air. It felt so raw and real and honest. I have a problem where I just get out of sync with romance books when something terrible unrealistic happens, but I didn’t have that problem here.

Emmie was just a fantastic character to read. I felt like I could walk down the street and meet her - she felt real and not a one-dimensional fictional character. She has a well built personality and her own little quirks. She felt really age appropriate as well. She had some of her life together but some is falling apart. She is really sensible at times and at other times is just a kid in her 20’s. She makes progress and she back slides, but she never stops moving. I liked reading her POV and can definitely relate to how scatter brained she is sometimes. It was great seeing her learn and grow in both her personal and professional life. It was nice to see the woman’s career be so central to the story and not just background information.

The book highlights really well the struggles of teachers and of people trying to make ends meet (or so it seems. I’m not a teacher). Not everything that happens is good but the story tends to focus on the good in people and makes this story hopeful when it could be a lot darker. Mental health rep is clearly a big focus and it comes across well.

Some of the humor was a bit silly, and I’m ashamed to say that the dumb jokes actually made me laugh. (Shout out to Emmie and Tommy at the vet). It’s definitely a certain flavor of humor but it worked for me.

The pacing slowed down a little bit in the 60-80% range but I think I felt that way mostly cause I was anxious for the happy ending to happen. Like obviously personal growth takes time but I wanted it to happen sooner. I was kicking myself at some of Emmie’s decisions but, ultimately, I think I would have made a lot of the same choices. (Again, a very realistic FMC to root for). There was a lot of little random plot points - some I enjoyed and added to the story, and some I thought were unnecessary. Hoping maybe we see some come back as other characters take the spotlight (yes, I am manifesting more Desert Grace books).

My deepest wish is that we could have gotten Tommy’s POV. I just wish I knew what that man was thinking, and I would have loved to read him hopelessly in love.

StoryGraph rating: 4.25/5.00

On Principle by Bonnie Callahan

On Principle follows Emeline Jones, an exhausted teacher who’s just trying to survive the chaos of her job and mental health struggles.

When she hooks up with the hot Irish guy in a priest outfit (Tommy, swoon!), things get messy fast—especially when he turns out to be her new boss!

Emmie’s journey is so relatable; she's juggling her students’ needs while dealing with her own family trauma and mental health.
The way Tommy supports her and is so patient with her is fantastic. Their chemistry is undeniable, and I loved watching Emmie learn to trust and lean on someone for once.

Bonnie Callahan’s writing is sharp and funny, perfectly capturing the chaos of love and life. This book left me feeling all the feels—funny, heartbreaking, and super cute!

I'm so thankful I was given the opportunity to check this author out!

Class is in session!
I don’t want it to end!!! This book is the perfect school year read. I have never read a book more accurately describe the teaching experience. Especially, in a title I situation. That is coming from a National Board Certified Teacher with 8.5 years in public education, Title I elementary schools. I’ve also never highlighted so many wonderful quotes about being an educator as well as mental health. The mental health representation is top notch. I love, love, love the discussion of benefits from seeking therapy. Let’s stop the narrative of it being taboo and embrace healing ourselves. The love story is such a crazy ride but I would hop on for a round 2 anytime. I mean who doesn’t love a good accent 😉 Major golden retriever energy 🦮 (or probably 🤣, let me know in the comments if you get the reference after reading).

I absolutely loved this book. It was more than just a fun love story, it was heartwarming, emotional and very relatable. This book touches on a few mental health disorders such as PTSD, depression and anxiety. Our FMC, Emeline, has a lot of trauma from her past that she carries around with her. She also feels the constant need to please others and tends to put her own happiness and well being aside.
As much as she tries to push Tommy away, she realizes that he is the one constant in her life that is always by her side and loves her for who she is. I loved watching their story unfold and learning about their pasts. This book will always stay close to my heart 🖤🖤

Few books make me cry happy tears, but I was constantly wiping my eyes reading the last couple chapters... And in a few other places. 🥹 So good. I adore Emmy, her swear substitutions, her dedication to her school, and how she bravely took huge steps for her mental health and happiness. I am head over heels for Tommy for so many reasons... handsome, Irish, generous, smart, sexy... The list goes on. 😍 I loved the romance and was rooting for this couple the whole time... And squealing over adorable Este. Thanks, Bonnie, for transporting me to Desert Grace with such a special story and beautiful, witty, funny writing. 💖

A one night stand in Vegas to working together! And a hot Irishman who is so so sweet and caring?! This book was so good, I was crying on a plane reading it! Happy tears at the end of course. I loved the way the author develops the characters and touches on the importance of mental health for everyone, no matter your age, your past, or your job.

This book will make you laugh and if you don’t have a smile while reading this, we can’t be reading the same book!

I think I need a pair of cashmere socks after reading this. (Iykyk)

I absolutely adored this book and I am still thinking about it days later! I completely fell in love with the different relationships and friendships in this book. The romance was tender and amazing, but there was so much more to love and that’s what makes this story so beautiful. There were realistic views of depression and past trauma, teachers who are doing their best in a broken education system, and amazing friendships.

Emmie was quirky, smart, and funny and her development over the book was emotional and beautiful! Tommy was incredibly kind and supportive. I melted for his care and respect not just for Emmie, but all the teachers in this book. I felt so many different emotions, but the overall spirit was hopeful and healing!

This story is such a heartwarming, emotional, and surprisingly relatable read. The book dives deep into more than just a love story—it explores mental health themes like PTSD, depression, and anxiety, making the characters feel real and grounded. Emeline, the main character, carries the weight of her past trauma and is constantly putting others' needs above her own. Her journey felt so authentic, especially as she tried to navigate both her chaotic job as a teacher and her personal struggles. I thoroughly enjoyed the education/teacher aspect of the story as well.
The mix of humor and heavier emotional moments made the story feel well-rounded and real. It's a touching, funny, and sweet read that I’d recommend to anyone who enjoys romance with a deeper emotional core.

Thank you Bonnie Callahan for giving me the opportunity to read this story.

This was such a cute rom-com! Bonnie is awesome at writing likeable and unique characters in situations that aren't super over-done for this genre. I really related to Emmie's struggles and enjoyed seeing her growth throughout the story and who doesn't love a guy with an accent😍 If you haven't read any of Bonnie's books I definitely recommend them! This one was great to pick up and speed through because you can't put it down!

I really enjoyed this book! Emmie is a relatable character- overachiever, always helping others, but never taking time for herself or taking care of herself.
She heads to Vegas to find a one night stand, who (despite trying not to!), she feels a deep connection with. But it’s a one nights stand, she goes home and that’s it, right? Not this time! 😅😁

I also found Emmie’s mental health journey relatable- from realizing that maybe she *should* go to therapy, to *knowing* she should but emotionally not wanting to, to finally taking the step to be seen! And even then, hesitating to talk about the deep issues she hasn’t worked through but finally realizing she needs to.
Tommy and Emmie’s relationship is sweet and genuine. And I was rooting for them the entire book!

Special thanks to the publisher for sending me an ARC in exchange for my honest review. I loved the opportunity to support a local Tucson author, and read this fun book early! 💕

This is my first Bonnie Callahan book and I’ll definitely be looking for her others! I read this one basically all in one weekend- which is fast for me! I enjoyed it so much. 💜

Beautiful,Honest & Real is what this book is!
This book is emotionally packed and will have you feeling all the feels. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll scream, and Hope for the best for these characters!

Who knew a one night stand could turn into a life altering love story! The tension in this story was so good and their reactions to finding out that they became coworkers after a night in Vegas were hilarious. I was looking at my kindle like omg WHAT!?!?

This book touches on so many realistic real life topics, and shows them in such a raw and unique way, that I’ve rarely seen done before! I loved the dimensional characters! Bravo Bonnie Callahan!
You’ve made me a fan of your work and I honestly can’t wait to see what comes next in the Desert Grace Series!

Our FMC Emmie is absolutely a hoot, she
is a passionate person for those she cares about when it comes to things/those that matter to her She loves fiercely but also is afraid of falling in love. She wants everyone to achieve their dreams and be happy so she does what she can to help them but at the cost of her own health and happiness.
I loved how real her character was,
and how I could relate with some of her choices she makes. Next we have our
MMC Tommy who is so patient, loving, attentive, supportive, and also a very swoon worthy Irish man. I loved how he was there on so many different levels for Emmie. He see’s that she puts so much into everything for everyone else but no one does the same for her.

Emmie and Tommy’s relationship is top tier from the start, the witty banter, tension and the realistic representation of mental health, struggles and real life were something I loved about this book so much!
I loved the character dynamics and the representation of different cultures, lifestyles, family structures, throughout the entire book. The Romance is so good it’s sexy yet soft and we see how much Emmie and Tommy are meant to be with each other throughout this book.

Thank you so so much to Bonnie Callahan for the ARC! I immensely enjoyed Emmie & Tommy’s story!! And I cannot wait for what comes next in this series! What a way to introduce a series, a cast of characters and show so many emotions, and realistic life experiences.

Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man.

I first discovered Bonnie Callahan at Tucson Festival of Books this spring after the lovely ladies of Friends To Lovers Tucson introduced me to her. I have been staring at her books on my shelf and finally, during this long weekend, I got to read "On Principle." Y'all. This book ATE and left no crumbs.

Attractive, in therapy, with an accent, lovable main male character? Check.
Caring, intelligent, independent, strong, capable female main character? Check.
Adorable and funny best friend characters? Check.
A dog the two main characters co-parent? Check.
A one night stand that is both sensitive and sweet and hot as heck? Check.
Circumstances that push them apart but ultimately help them grow as better people? Check.

I really loved how this book truly embodies the "romance is everything, not just one thing" that all romance readers know and many more readers are coming to realize. Emmie grows through her grief, learning about herself, learning about her students, learning about her friends. She has all of the same big questions many women face: career or love? Why does it have to be one or the other? How do you handle all of your own stuff and the mental, emotional and physical load of those around me? How do you put some of those heavy things down? Why do you carry them in the first place? How you let someone help you without feeling like you're failing? It's so heart wrenching and all at once comforting to watch her go through this book, asking and answering and fumbling with all of these questions. And to see too that these questions aren't just limited to women, too. Tommy asks similar questions, he wants to be there for Emmie while not making her feel smothered or as if she isn't strong enough to take it all on herself.

And the friends? Man oh man, I could see all of these different friends having their own books! I love when you can envision additional characters having their own books.

I read this in one day, in practically one sitting, and it was so lovely. Definitely recommend!

This book had me laughing, crying, begging the characters to make different decisions, swooning, and just experiencing the whole range of emotions. I love the character dynamics and the representation of different cultures, lifestyles, family structures, throughout the entire book. Bonnie doesn’t shy away from discussions revolving around mental health and grief processing, but is sensitive to how it could impact her readers and does mention at the beginning of the book which situations are mentioned and to the degree they are discussed.

Our FMC Emmie is a hilarious, yet passionate firecracker when it comes to things that matter to her. She loves fiercely but also is afraid of falling in love. She wants everyone to achieve their dreams and be happy so she does what she can to help them but 99.9% of the time it’s at the sacrifice of her own time and health. I loved how real her character is and how well I could relate with some of her behaviors and decisions.

Our MMC Tommy is our patient, loving, attentive, supportive, swoony Irish man that had me swooning with everything he did. My only complaint would be that he seemed a little too perfect, but I think a lot of that was because his character is a few years older and has time to deal with and process life events.

The tension in this story was so good and their reactions to finding out that they became coworkers after a night in Vegas were hilarious. Though there are some on page spicy/romantic moments, they are not overly detailed. I would describe this story as one that is more about discovering love, the strength of family, but more importantly it would be the necessity of being around those who love and support you whether that is family or friends that have become family. It’s okay to be independent, but it’s also okay to not bear the weight of the entire world on your shoulders.

I loved this book so much and I’m excited to what future novels in the Desert Grace series will bring us.

On Principle by Bonnie Callahan is a wonderful romance where mental health struggles, educational needs, and multi-dimensional characters shine.

Emeline “Emmy” Jones is a history teacher at Desert Grace, a school for lower income families. She gives her everything to her school and students, from making sure her fellow teachers have working dry erase markers to paying a struggling family’s water bill, so her student won’t have to wash their clothing in the bathroom sink. She knows which toilet is acting up and who needs a firm but caring touch. She gives everything to the school, leaving very little for herself. Searching for a moment of fun to blow off steam, she ends up in Tommy O’Connor’s hotel room in Vegas on Halloween night. He leaves and after it’s clear he isn’t coming back, Emmie heads home ready to remember the handsome Irishman for the distraction he was. That is until 2 months later when he shows up at Desert Grace as the new head of the school.

Emmie and Tommy’s relationship is adorable from the start. Their wit and banter are top tier and kept me entertained until the last page. Tommy is ridiculously supportive and quickly saw that while Emmie is taking care of everyone else, no one is taking care of her. I would have loved to have read his point of view as well. The book really highlights the struggles of teachers which, as a preschool teacher myself, I really appreciated. It’s hard to educate when a child’s basic needs aren’t met. The school itself seems like a great place and I would love to see more stories come from that environment.

The best part of this book was the mental health representation. I admit that while Emmie’s struggles were very real and felt authentic, I found myself wanting to yell at her to tell her therapist everything and to stop holding back. But that also made everything feel more genuine, as seeking help is HARD. The support she had around her was inspiring, as is Emmie herself, and it was wonderful watching her realize that she doesn’t have to do everything and deal with everything alone.

I’m an epilogue lover, so I missed having one here. But overall, I enjoyed this story of love, education, and learning to not always put everyone else’s happiness before your own.

I received this book as an ARC for free in turn for my honest review.

4.5, rounded up

TROPES
🌮 Forbidden Workplace Romance

🌮 One Night Stand

Emmie is a character I didn’t know I needed to see on the page. Watching her try to overcome the need to make sure everyone is okay, even if it’s to a personal detriment, is something I can certainly relate to as a recovering people pleaser. It’s difficult to not want to do every single thing to support someone else, especially when someone calls out that you aren’t doing the same for yourself. I’m so glad that Emmie has people in her life that help her in that respect. Watching her journey to self-discovery and recovery is inspiring as someone also doing her best to overcome the difficult parts of childhood and how that’s impacted my adult life.

Tommy is so patient with her, which I love. He knows there’s a long game at play, and that Emmie needs to do some things for herself before they can be what they’re meant to be. He’s definitely an act of service person, and I loved reading how he managed to find solutions for things Emmie and her colleagues had given up on. He’s also an amazing dog dad.

I went to a tiny charter school in town, and to see something similar represented, and have similar issues, was important. To see the lengths Arizona educators go to, the things they have to do to secure classroom furniture or funding, feels incredibly representative of the issues of the educational system within the state.

As someone born and raised in Tucson, it was great to see the lesser known parts of Tucson life represented. If you aren’t from here, you may not recognize them, but every time I did I couldn’t help but chuckle. Also, I’m officially adding the phrase “what the chuckwalla” and the term “emotional archaeology” to my vocabulary.

Three words: beautifully honest & real!

There are so many other words to describe how fantastic this book is, however the raw, unfiltered emotions are what really linger long after you have finished this book. It is emotionally packed and will have you feeling all the feels. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll wish you had a sexy Irishman who only wants to take care of you and make your life easier. Who knew a one night stand could turn into a life altering kind of love story!

This is an incredible book that touches on so many realistic topics and depicts them in such a raw, natural way! So many moments had me teary eyed as I read about Emmie and Tommy. Emmie has her own rules she is living by; she has experienced loss and is coping with her battles the way she was taught/told to. Tommy is THE most supportive, patient MMC I have ever encountered. He is patiently waiting and helping Emmie as she navigates her life and is making strides to improve her mental health/awareness.

This is an amazing book that is the perfect combination of telling a love story and showing the importance of filling your own cup so that you can help fill others’. The mental health representation is incredibly profound. Both Emmie and Tommy grow immensely and reading as they did and found their way back to one another was so freaking heartwarming and even inspiring at times!

I loved the chemistry between Emmie and Tommy! Emmie cares so deeply about her friends/family and the school she works at. So, when she meets Tommy and he cares so deeply for her…it is a match made in heaven. The things he does for her are literally swoon-worthy. No one is as deserving of Tommy than Emmie and vice versa.

Thank you so so much to Bonnie Callahan for the ARC! I immensely enjoyed Emmie & Tommy’s story, the characters centering around Desert Grace, and just about everything about this book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 🌶️🌶️🌶️

My first book by Bonnie Callahan! The way she wrote our FMC’s battle with depression and always giving to others freely. It is a subject that hits close to home. I understand that feeling of pouring into everyone else to ensure they don’t see how you are breaking.

Emmeline is strong, cheerful on the outside, quirky, and a nerd. This keeps everyone from seeing just how broken she feels on the inside. She gives so freely of herself to everyone else, but rarely takes time for herself. When she meets someone who is able to see beyond the surface and force herself to take care of her, she is thrown by someone taking time out to care for her.

Tommy sees beyond the smile that Emmeline always has on her face. He notices the small things and quickly figures out she is hiding behind that smile. Ensuring that he allows her to be herself and encourages her to help herself. He doesn’t swoop in to save her, but helps show her she isn’t alone. He’ll be there to catch her, but only if she asks him too.

Both of these MCs are nerds and I am here for it! I loved that they let their inner nerds shine, never apologizing for that side of them, and were able to find their soulmate in the other. Their flirty banter was hot, their chemistry oozes off the page. Bonnie wrote such a good book that was real, relatable, and I love how she made sure to make it known it is ok to not be ok.

As always, review any author notes before reading.

What an absolutely beautiful book this is!!!

ON PRINCIPLE has the butterfly-inducing, feet-kicking feels of an amazing romance, the head-nods of a laser-sharp look at the struggles of a career in education, and the tissue-grabbing, soul-lifting ache of a deep and honest look into depression and trauma.

Callahan has a gift for writing female main characters that are messy, real, fraught, and utterly sympathetic. We see and feel Emmie's mental health struggles but never feel dragged down as a reader--instead, there is a lightness and optimism about the book that has us eager to turn each page, rooting for Emmie and her amazing crew of friends and coworkers. Will you need a box of tissues nearby for the second half of this book? Heck yes. But if you're like me, it will be because you are finding some of your own healing along with Emmie, and that healing comes with immense relief.

And while this book depicts mental health struggles and focus on Emmie's growth and journey, the romance at it's core is thrilling, sexy, tender, and so much fun to read. We know Tommy and Emmie are a great match, and it's truly healing to see a good man be patient and supportive of a brilliant and sweet woman who is finding her way. Likewise, Callahan has created a fun and insightful cast of side characters that keep the spirit of the book afloat, holding the reader in the care and displaying beautiful friendship.

I will read absolutely anything Bonnie Callahan writes, and am so thrilled for the world to read this wonderful book.

On Principle by Bonnie Callahan is such a great read that I nearly swooned at the end of the book when I read there would be a second novel in the series coming in the spring of 2025. I simply did not want the story to end!

Callahan brings to life a main character, Emeline Jones, who is not only invested in her job, but relatable, one who knows how to have fun in Las Vegas in the opening scenes of the book, which had me squirming a bit, but who also lives by a set of principles in her real life, principles that we can all admire, that, at times, conflict with her finding true love while also advancing in her career. Callahan also writes, believably, of a perfect Irish gentleman, Tommy, who patiently waits to win the heart of Emeline, along with her community of co-workers, friends, and admirers. And let's not forget the dog that Emeline and Tommy adopt.

All that said, the story that Callahan delivers is not all sunshine and rainbows, not all romance, but also tackles mental health issues head on, including such heavy topics as suicide and depression, and does so with so much compassion, grace, and understanding. This is not just your "typical" romance, but it is so much more, delving into these deep topics, all while having one of THE BEST written sex scenes I've ever read about halfway through the book.

This is an excellent book, one that I will likely re-read often, especially as Callahan uses the desert southwest, my home, as its main setting. To me, it felt like home, and that is the highest praise that I can give this book. I enjoyed it immensely.

On Principle made me feel *all* the things in the best way possible!

From the first chapter, I was giggling and kicking my feet reading Emmie and Tommy’s  banter! I love a good slow burn, so I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about a book that opens with spice before turning things down to a simmer, but I’m happy to report that it just makes the tension and flirty banter even better.

There were times when I found myself getting annoyed with Emmie, only to realize about 30% in that it’s because she reminds me so much of myself before I started treatment for my own mental health (pathological people pleasers rise up🫡). If you’re looking for some truly realistic mental health rep, this is it! Getting to experience Emmie’s personal growth reminded me how important it is to give our past selves grace and treat our present selves with care.

I would be doing this book a disservice if I didn’t mention Este: a dog, probably. The “puddle” (pittie x poodle) mix stole my heart just as quickly as she stole Emmie and Tommy’s, and I loved seeing their dynamic as they navigated co-parenting her.

TLDR; add On Principle to your TBR if you like:

🤎 Second chance forbidden romance
🤞🏼 Forced proximity
🕯️ Slow burn (that starts fast!)
✨ Golden retriever MMC
🧦 Cashmere socks
😉 Flirty banter
🐶 Rescue pups
💭 Realistic mental health rep

A huge thank you to Bonnie Callahan for including me in your ARC team in exchange for an honest review!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - 5 Stars
🌶🌶 - Spice Level

Thomas (Tommy) Flynn O'Connor meets Emeline (Emmie) Jones one night in Vegas when Emmie took a quick trip, hoping for a 1 night stand. Tommy and Emmie hook up that night in his expensive suite. By morning, she thought he left her alone even after a hot and steamy night. When she returns to her teaching job, Tommy has been hired to clean things up like budget, staff, etc. This is actually his niche. Her school is funded completely by donations, so it's been in the toilet for a bit.

Tommy is the golden retriever, while Emmie needs to work through her issues with people pleasing and where it stems from. Tommy stays in the background, letting Emmie come through this her way with his support.

The love story was sweet and brought you through their slow burn to happily ever after. If you're looking for the golden retriever Irish man who rubs your feet day 1 in cashmere socks, Tommy is the one. The spicy scenes do hint at fade to black a little more than I'm used to, but it works for this book due to Emmie's mental health that needs some work, which is the overarching theme.

I absolutely recommend reading this first book in the series by new to me author Bonnie Callahan.

Thank you, author, for the ARC!

This book is about how someone can walk into your life and change it for the better. As someone with anxiety and depression I was happy to see a FMC who dealt with these struggles as well. While her story is different from mine in many ways dealing with these as an adult is very much the same.

It is very hard to admit when you need help and to take that step. Emmie always wanted to make sure those around her were happy and always putting their needs over hers. One part of the story I really loved was when Tommy tells Emmie to let him carry some of the apples. I love the idea of everything being an apple. The more apples you try to carry the heavier the basket becomes and weighs you down. Letting go of some of the apples and asking for help is so hard.

Watching as Emmie deals with her mental health through the book and tries to find her happiness really shows that there is hope. I'm really glad the author was able to write this and show some of the struggles that people with mental illness go through. Also, have other characters realize that is huge because a lot of times people don't see the invisible struggle.

As stated before this book is very heavy with mental illness and family history of mental illness. This can bring up a lot of feelings so please read this book only if you are in the right headspace.

I have a favorite new sub-genre and it’s Romantic Drama-this book has solidified the top spot in that category. The love story of Emmie, a teacher at a high school for troubled teens, and Tommy, the new, patient (and Irish!) headmaster, has all the right elements of romance and drama: from the time they first met through to their potential happily ever after. There are so many emotional moments that range the spectrum of highs and lows, comical and heavy. There is tension and slow-burn intimacy, there is conflict and an outpouring of love and support. Told from the single, first person POV of Emmie, the added character arc of mental health was so well done at times it left my inner thoughts speechless. I didn’t even miss the POV of Tommy! Not only was the romance, drama, character development and scenery five stars, but how the author was able to portray the necessity and importance of good teachers and the impact they have on students...wow! The cover initially drew me and the story had me captivated through the acknowledgements. Phenomenal book, one that I will definitely recommend over and over. I am so happy the author took a chance and let me read this book early…I highly, highly recommend picking up a copy.

I wanted to read this book because the romance storyline sounded great and I’m a sucker for Irish men and forbidden/workplace romances. What I didn’t expect was for the mental health rep to tug at my heartstrings so completely that I had to just set my kindle down and take a few breaths before continuing on.

This story was phenomenally done. The true look into anxiety and depression with the extensive people pleasing and self sabotage was a punch in the gut and a yank on the heartstrings in the beat possible way. I loved getting to watch Emmie find her own way and the path to healing while Tommy never gave up on her. Being in his position couldn’t have been easy but I think it’s important that it was mentioned that he was seeing a therapist regularly as well - probably how he appropriately navigated her pushing him away.

I think the least realistic things in this book, honestly, were: 1) She was the most passionate and qualified person for the job and got it-no questions asked, even though it left a massive hole to fill and 2) She found the perfect therapist for her on the first try. None of this bothers me, is obviously fiction, but if I needed to find things to nitpick for being unrealistic, it’d be that.

This book was so raw and honest that I genuinely had to stop reading and walk away a few times just to process and make sure I was staying present in the storyline. I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s cute, fun, funny, and deep - all wrapped into one sweet romance.

I did receive this book as an advanced copy in exchange for an honest, unbiased review

Is there anything more shocking than… actually finding love in Vegas?!?
I loved this book from the start!!
Witty banter. . .check
Flirtatious. . .check
Smart. . .check

1. A dedicated teacher with troubled students
2. Subtle discussions about PTSD and depression
3. Accurate descriptions of the choke hold societal enforced principles and expectations can have on a young woman.
So anyone who knows me knows I can’t stomach Vegas for more than 48 hours…I get nauseous, my kidneys shut down and I break out in a rash, so initially I was skeptical when our MCs meet in a night club in Vegas but boy did it work!
Seriously, where has this book been for the past few months?!
Great character development, non triggering descriptions of childhood emotional trauma and adult insecurities.
The G-rated cursing was actually endearing instead of cheesy and the dedication of the MC to get her students the help they need was admirable and gave the story depth.

The ancillary characters were a perfect accompaniment and the love story was sweet after getting off to a heated start.
This was a romance with substance.

Emmie walks into a bar in Vegas on Halloween looking for a hook up. There, she meets the Irish man dressed as a priest, Tommy.

What happens in Vegas doesn't always stay in Vegas, as Emmie finds out. The new head master at the school Emmie works at turns out to the Vegas hook up Tommy who now happens to be her boss and who abandoned her in the hotel room.

Emmie has an issue with putting others first and pleasing them and putting aside her own happiness. When it's brought up that she should be promoted to principal of the school, her first reaction is that her and Tommy can no longer see each other. She has principles!

Follow Emmie and Tommy's cute romance story as Emmie comes to realize that she can be happy.

This was definitely a great read and has a few good laughs! Can't forget about the dog, Este, they seemed to have adopted!
