이야기의 아름다움을 증명해온 소설가 김금희가 장편소설 『대온실 수리 보고서』를 선보인다. 살아남은 역사의 잔재인 창경궁 대온실을 배경으로 한 가슴 아픈 역사와 인간에 대한 믿음을 저버리지 않으려는 신념을 감동적으로 보여주는 작품으로, 김금희 소설세계를 한차원 새롭게 열며 근래 보기 드문 풍성한 장편소설의 진면목을 보여주는 대작이다.
30대 여성 ‘영두’가 창경궁 대온실 보수공사의 백서를 기록하는 일을 맡게 되면서 이야기는 시작된다. 영두는 석모도 출신으로, 중학생 때 창덕궁 담장을 따라 형성된 서울의 동네인 원서동에서 유학을 한 경험이 있다. 어떤 이유 때문인지 ‘창경궁’이라는 말을 듣고는 마음이 서늘해지는 것을 느끼며 처음엔 백서를 기록하는 일을 맡기를 꺼린다. 그곳에서 아주 크게 인생이 꺾이는 일이 있었다는 듯이.

"벽은 낙선재 누마루 아래 있어서 들여다보는 사람들이 많지 않은데 특이하게도 깨진 얼음 모양을 하고 있다고 했다. 아궁이 불씨를 막는 화방벽으로 화재를 예방하려는 바람을 담아 얼음을 새겨넣었는데 마치 벽화처럼 보이기도 한다고, 불길을 덮으려는 깨진 얼음들이 어딘가 조선의 역사를 생각하게 한다고."
"산아는 뭔가를 너무 좋아하면 역시 안 되는 것 같다고 말했다. 불행해진다고. 나는 산아가 쓴 불행, 이라는 무거운 단어가 신경 쓰였다."
"역사가 슬픈 건 죽은 이들 때문일 수도 있고, 늘 미완으로 남는 소망 때문일 수도 있을 것 같았다."
The main character, YoungDu gets a temporary job at an architect office. She is to write an official report as the team of architectures work on restoring Japanese occupation era built greenhouse in a Chosen dynasty palace. Her job takes YoungDu into unexpected events where she need to face trauma from her teen years. YoungDu's story is intertwined with multiple stories of people past and present- YoungDu's friend's daughter, Japanese horticulturist who disguised the original greenhouse, Korean father and Japanese step-daughter. I think that the complexity of (unknowingly) intertwined lives of people across time makes this story so endearing. The book is also full of interesting facts about the palace-its history and people/animal lived there.

🌱Pretty cover, but sadly, that’s where the appeal ended for me🪿
The pacing was painfully slow, and I honestly can’t remember a single character. There were just too many, and none of them had, well, 𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘦𝘳. The structure was also frustrating, the constant switching between past and present without a clear purpose made the story feel chunky and awkward.
I really wanted to love this book, but it just wasn't for me.
