Light in the Harbour is a part modern and part historical novel set in Pilot Bay, on Kootenay Lake. The book explores both the inner and outer journeys of two rich and complex characters who live in the same place in two very different times.
Nineteen-year-old Patrick Wallace comes to the booming Canadian frontier settlement of Pilot Bay from Bonners Ferry, Idaho in 1895 to make his fortune. A woman he meets throws him into a web of mystery, and in his search for answers he is rewarded with much more than he bargained for.
Sally Jenkins is a woman on a self-destructive path. She comes to Pilot Bay in 2019 to recover from her addictions, and to find her life’s true purpose.
When Sally finds Patrick’s journal tucked away in a dusty corner of her new home, she is drawn into Patrick’s world. His story is not only a means of escape from her troubles, but also a lasting connection to the past, and a beacon to help her to find her own way forward.
The main themes in the book centre around our human longing for connection, belonging, and purpose in life. The descriptive parts evoke pictures in the minds of the readers of the wild landscape surrounding the action, and the landscape becomes a strong third character in the novel.
