Charming Dawn

Rate this book
All Ofelia Adjei craves is a quiet life, far from the tragedy and secretive magical family she left behind. Now she owns a trendy boutique in Prague, concealing her craft in an exclusive line of custom skincare and perfumes. But when a long-lost childhood friend reappears, reigniting old memories and awakening new desires, her carefully curated life is thrown into turmoil.

As the youngest member of the Vogel pack, Christof has finally come into his wolf. He spends his days dodging his overbearing family and nights reveling in Prague's supernatural party scene, until he runs into the witch he hasn’t stopped thinking about since she vanished over a decade ago.

While Chris and Ofelia navigate their rekindled connection, reports of a ruthless entity preying on witches in the city surface—the same entity responsible for the death of her parents. Now, Chris and Ofelia must stop the witch hunter, before Ofelia becomes the next target.

The Tooth & Spell trilogy concludes in Charming Dawn. The stakes have never been higher, the magic more dangerous, and the passion more irresistible.

Jasmine Silvera spent her impressionable years sneaking "kissing books" between comics and fantasy movies. She's been mixing them up in her writing ever since. She is the author of three books in the Grace Bloods series: Death's Dancer, Dancer's Flame, and The Talon & the Blade. Binding Shadows, the first book in the Tooth & Spell trilogy, is forthcoming in 2020.

I really enjoyed the conclusion to the Tooth & Spell trilogy! It features the youngest Vogel brother Chris and his love, Ofelia. This is a second chance romance- Ofelia and Chris were best friends as children, but then an incident resulted in Ophelia’s parents sending her to boarding school. The book starts with them crossing paths years later with the occasional flashback on their history. Chris sees Ofelia and is like she is absolutely the only one for me, declares his undying love on the first date level adoration. While Chris wears his heart on his sleeve and is defined by his dedication to his family and loved ones (despite his brothers’ beliefs that he is aimless)- school pick-ups, niece and nephew wrangling, cooking- Ophelia has a complicated relationship with her family, is hyper independent, and is not super enthusiastic about having the equivalent of a golden retriever in human/wolf form dogging her footsteps. They team up to bring down a serial killer who keeps draining witches of their blood around Prague and who killed Ofelia’s parents.

I feel like each book in the Tooth & Spell adds new dimension to the world- and it makes me want to re-read the full world of books all together to see everything come together again. This book especially felt like it set up some potential future books or series in a different setting than Prague (no spoilers on where!- you will have to read the book to figure it out). I feel like recently a lot of fantasy/paranormal romance I have read have similar worlds and magic systems to each other, and this world really stands out for being unique and interesting. Fingers crossed more books in the world are in the way!

While each Tooth & Spell book features a different couple, I would recommend reading the trilogy in order and potentially even starting with the Grace Bloods trilogy.

So this is a big magical family, 3 brothers and 1 sister, with dad a wolf and mom a witch. The guys are werewolves but Isela is a godsdancer and has her own series, and she doesn’t know about their abilities. Christof is the only single one, he’s trying to be more independent but the family keeps asking him to look after their kids. His story really begins as a teen when he becomes close friends with a young witch and she allows him to connect with Woof. After years apart a chance meeting at a club brings them back together. The rest takes a while to build up, we learn about her family and the murder of her parents but I started to wonder where we were going. There are witches being murdered for their blood, a potent drug sold in the clubs and it’s up to the new power couple to end it. I enjoyed their connection with intensity and commitment to each other however it seemed more carnal than heartfelt initially. The story is more of a slow build and then it moves quickly around the last third, and it’s not necessary to read the other books to follow along. I’ve received an early copy and provided my review voluntarily.

This is the third and final book covering the back story of each of Isela werewolf brothers and their witch-y wives. This time we take a deep dive into Christof’s back story and learn about his somewhat contentious relationship with his older brothers. We also meet a whole new supernatural culture with very different customs from what we know of the world in Death’s Dancer. I enjoyed the brief foray into Afrofuturism when Ofelia is called back to her ancestral home.

As with the rest of Jasmine Silvera’s books, we get good writing, thoughtful character development with the occasional LOL moment, and lots of great fantasy with a splash of hot romance. I enjoyed seeing the development arc of Chris finding his place in life and among his family members. Overall, an entertaining read, and a nice bow on the top of this series.

A wonderful conclusion to the series - loved the lore around Ofelia's magic. Also, I had totally not noticed (or not remembered) that each main called it something different (notion, charm...). Loved Chris' character (though also deeply uncomfortable reading how everyone took advantage of him). Ofelia was a bit more difficult for me to like (perhaps the destructive independent streak was a bit too close to home?), but I ultimately enjoyed her, too.

Can't wait to see what Silvera does next!

I loved the final book in this trilogy! Chris and Fi’s story is beautiful. I loved Chris’s character growth and getting to see him as more than the little brother who can’t get his act together. A must read for anyone who likes books with witches and werewolves. I can’t wait to see what Jasmine writes next!

This author never fails to deliver a story that sinks in and stays with you. Fantastic, complex characters, emotional romance, and so much more. The world building that has gone into these unique tales blows the mind.

I really liked this book and the world the author has made. I’m looking forward to reading the series about the sister.
