Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire #1

Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire Vol. 1

Rate this book
Manifesting fire. Seeing through walls. Stopping time. Abilities like these separate metahumans from ordinary people. Some metahumans serve as secret protectors, while others use their power for cheap gains. Some only wish to live quietly. And some seek to upend the world.

3,000 years ago, the world looked very different, populated by beings from mythology’s pages. But when the yao of old brought humanity to the brink of annihilation, Emperor Wu was forced to seal away the source of spiritual power, gifting the world to those without abilities. Now, someone is plotting to break that seal in a bid to reclaim what once was.

When easy-going fire user Xuan Ji takes a job at the Anomaly Regulation Bureau to escape his mounting debt, he’s forced into a confrontation with the ancient demon Sheng Lingyuan. Enigmatic, aloof, and deeply broken, Sheng Lingyuan seems to have a connection with the seal—and with Xuan Ji himself. Together with a team of quirky metahumans, they must uncover both present-day conspiracies and sorrows from millennia past—and perhaps stop trying to kill each other.

Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire is a haunting urban fantasy with biting humour, exploring the lines people draw between each other—and the ones they’ll cross to be together.

Yes, yes, and yes! This novel was nothing short of fantastic, amazing, and stunning. I genuinely believe this is one of Priest's best works to date. Of all the novels I’ve read by Priest, this one has become my favorite.

The plot was incredibly exhilarating and brimming with action. From the first chapter, I felt like I was on a rollercoaster, with barely a moment to catch my breath as the pace was relentless. Each twist and turn was executed masterfully, immersing me in a whirlwind of political intrigue, unexpected betrayals, and tantalizing flirtation that hooked me.

Xuan Ji is the kind of protagonist who leaves a lasting impression, and I have no complaints about him, even when he occasionally stumbles—though those instances are rare due to his impressive cleverness. His intelligence and cunning left me in awe, particularly as he navigated the complex moral landscapes of the story. The revelations he uncovered, especially towards the climactic ending, were so shocking that I could hardly comprehend what was unfolding before me. He embodies everything I adore in a protagonist: resourceful, strategic, and deeply engaging.

Sheng Lingyuan, on the other hand, evoked a tumult of emotions within me, oscillating between anger and intrigue. He is a masterful manipulator, employing charm and deception as his primary tools. I found myself falling for his tricks more than once, captivated by the way he wielded seduction like a double-edged sword. His character is enshrouded in enigma, presenting an icy facade that obscures his true intentions and motives. This mystery kept me guessing, eager to peel back the layers of his complex personality.

The entire ensemble of side characters was also exceptionally well-developed, each with rich backstories and distinct personalities that made them feel vividly real. They were not mere accessories to advance the plot but fleshed out individuals with their own identifiable weaknesses and motivations, contributing to the overall tapestry of the story.

The relationship between Xuan Ji and Sheng Lingyuan is intricate and multifaceted, filled with tension and unspoken history. I often found myself perplexed; their past is so meticulously concealed that, despite the few subtle clues the author sprinkled throughout the narrative, I struggled to piece together their history. Currently, their dynamic resembles an enemies-to-frenemies scenario, with neither Xuan Ji nor Sheng Lingyuan seemingly recalling the intricacies of their past relationship. The tantalizing mystery surrounding their history kept me on the edge of my seat, almost frustratingly so, as I yearned for more insight to illuminate their connection.

In summary, this book was an exhilarating ride that swung between moments of sheer delight and nail-biting anxiety. I cherished every single moment spent lost in its pages. I can't wait for the second volume, especially since it comes out this month.

I’ve only read this first volume (there will be 5) and this story might already be one of my favorite Priest’s novels along with Can Ci Pin, Guardian, and Lord Seventh 😬. This is a good link if you want a plot and character summary https://lhjc.carrd.co/#characters

❤️‍🔥Mix of modern/urban fantasy and ancient history/mythology
❤️‍🔥 Enemies to grudging/reluctant allies?
❤️‍🔥Slow burn with lots trust issues
❤️‍🔥Beautiful writing- everything is so easy to visualize

We are still learning about Xuan Ji and Shen Lingyuan’s backgrounds by the end of this volume. I’m so intrigued about their past and how it’s shaping their current relationship. There are so many layers being unveiled about XJ and SL! There were a few times I wasn’t 100% understanding everything but like in Guardian, I trusted the author and it did not detract from the story.

Feels like we are in for some dark themes ahead as we find out some events from the past that are quite devastating. I could not put this book down - wish I had ebook version that I could highlight and lookup things but I did take notes 📝

*I’m interested in watching the donghua even though it’s not complete but I’m also not wanting to spoil the novel 🥴

"After all, they were in perfect sync when it came to betrayal. Neither had a shred of guilt over severing ties at the sign of trouble. It was a pleasant relationship wholly free of accountability."

Have I mentioned how much I enjoy Priest's writing? 😌 Drowning Sorrows in Raging Fire was an excellent read. Very info heavy, but not overbearing, in my opinion.

I can't wait to see the relationship of these two flourish! A lot happened, but the plot didn't move as fast as I had hoped. Still so many questions left unanswered. I was left with even more questions. Maybe that's why it took me so long to finish this.

“The vulnerability of the strong was as soul-stirring as the courage of the cowardly.”

description

As expected with a Priest novel, volume one comes with a heavy info dump. I even started taking notes, but still felt a little lost here and there. Thankfully, once I pushed through a few paragraphs (or chapters), things started falling into place. Priest really knows how to pull the rug from under you—just when I think I’ve figured something out, she flips it completely. I’m constantly impressed by how intricate her stories are. By chapter 6, I was fully hooked and had to pause for a second like, “Wait, this is so good… oh right, I’m reading Priest.”

I also love how perceptive Bi Chunsheng is—she stood out to me right away. But wow, her story? Absolutely devastating. I had to put the book down after chapter 5 and cry a bit. Even had a whole convo about it with my boyfriend because it hit that hard. And then there’s Xuan Ji, who manages to keep things light even when the story’s dealing with super serious themes. The humor was perfectly timed without undercutting the weight of the plot. I don’t know how Priest balances it all so well, but she does.

This book left me needing volume 2 ASAP. I’m also fully convinced I need more Priest books on my shelf. I already loved Guardian: Zhen Hun and Stars of Chaos: Sha Po Lang, but Drowning Sorrows reminded me why Priest is a must-read author for me. The plot, the emotional impact, the tiny details that seem random but totally come together later—it’s just next-level storytelling. And shoutout to Rosmei for the gorgeous dust jacket too. They seriously nailed the presentation.

Goodness, I’ve turned so slow in reading physical copies of books. But it’s a very beautiful book so there’s that. I’d have probably read it much faster if an ebook version were available (alas it isn’t).

The story is super intriguing and I’m looking forward to reading more of it. Though I should probably have waited until the last volume is about to drop. I mean there’s one more volume to be read before I will run out but I really hate waiting on books.

The combination of fantasy and modern aspects were top notch in this book. I have loved Xuan Ji from the start. He’s so funny and laid back in his power and way to deal with all the shit thrown his way. He’s also as equally a mysterious guy as Sheng Lingyuan. He’s just more approachable and therefore it’s easier to overlook. We don’t know that much about Sheng Lingyuan after this volume. He’s this guy from 3000 years back and maybe he’s a demon and he’s definitely been a famous historical figure (an emperor no less), but what he does in the now, who knows.

Apparently they take the enemy to reluctant allies to maybe lovers sometimes in the future trope to new levels. For now their alliance is warped by betrayal in often funny ways. Also, I’m super curious about the soul sword turned body connection and how they seem to have a past or a linkage or whatever between them.

So, I’m curious about where the plot goes from here. Rationally I’m in no hurry to read the next book but my immense curiosity will probably lead me to read on.

Very tasty enemies to lovers slowburn set in the midst of complex, intriguing plot spanning both ancient and modern times, with rich worldbuilding and memorable characters - as expected of this author.

With a jolt, Xuan Ji's gaze cleared. The demon had actually tried to seduce him! Utterly shameless!
"Tsk." Sheng Lingyuan shook his head in feigned disappointment. "So young, yet so steadfast in resolve. I'm telling you to let go for your own good. [...] Rather than obstructing me, shouldn't you be hunting down the summoner?"
"I'm scared you'll bite," Xuan Ji scoffed.

Volume 1 starts with Emperor Wu, Sheng Xiao (Sheng Lingyuan), throwing himself into the flames of the Crimson Abyss; 3,000 years later, he's awakened. Soon after, he crosses paths with Xuan ji, newly appointed director of the Disaster Response Department in charge of taking care of supernatural occurrences and their aftermaths. His first case, of course, involves the 3,000 year old demon Sheng Lingyuan. The two end up fighting upon their first meeting, but soon are forced to tolerate each other's presence, never passing an opportunity to try to kill each other, bickering and flirting when they don't succeed.

"Pardon me," Sheng Lingyuan said with no sincerity whatsoever. "A necessary expedient—I intended you no harm."
Whatever respect Xuan Ji still held for Emperor Wu disintegrated entirely. "Go enjoy a long stroll off a nice, short pier," he spat through gritted teeth.

The story sets a good balance between humor and angst, as well as plot and romance. And through it all, we get to dive deeper into the characters' minds...

For a fleeting moment, a nameless fear arose within him—a desperate wish for the crimson waters to harden into a cocoon and block out the world, to hide him away until the end of time. But there wasn't a single inch of land in this world he could call a refuge. Peace, respite, repose... To him, these were but fantasies. His memories awoke like a beast roused from slumber, its eyes flicking open—and its jaws parting wide to greet him.

One of the best danmei I've read, and certainly one of priest's best novels. I expect volume 2 to be fantastic as well.

4.6/5. I thought there was so much going on in the first book! I've realized Priest enjoys writing investigation stories. It was really good, and I can't wait to read the second book because it ended on a cliffhanger!

I really enjoyed this. It’s a solid start to a new series! The whole supernatural(?) aspect was fun to learn about and understand. I was particularly hooked throughout the middle, the mystery was very well done, and I was always itching to pick the book back up whenever I had to put it down.

I really like Shen Linguan and Xuan Ji, though I have to say that by the end of this, I wasn’t sure if I understand either of them just yet? But that’s okay, because I’ll be reading the next volume soon and I’m sure things will come together nicely 😋

THAT WAS A LOT. HOLY SHIT. I need volume 2 asap.

this took me a while to get into (maybe bc I was also multitasking reading 2 other novels at the same time), but the action scenes are great and the fantasy/supernatural/horror elements are amazing. the scenes of gore and horror were very chilling and very disturbing to me, but well-written. priest writes paranormal/fantasy horror really well. also, the worldbuilding is very cool with lots of yao and metahumans all with different cool powers.

I adore xuan ji already. he is so smart but also so funny. he is so sharp and clever but when he opens his mouth bullshit comes out. he also speaks like a terminally online gen z/millennial (he's supposed to be a millennial in canon, but the translator here used a lot of internet gen z slang) which makes him so relatable. he's also the coolest have u seen his flaming wings??

sheng lingyuan initially came off very creepy but also very cool. we don't know much about him and I want to know wtf is up with him. I can already tell though that he's been through so much constant suffering and trauma since the moment of birth. I think I will like him after we find out the truth of his story. rn I am just reeling from the falsehoods and half-lies and waiting find out what actually happened in the past.

these two have a very intense connection that's hinted at throughout vol 1 and I'm dying to know exactly what is the true nature of their relationship. I sense toxic tragic codependent doomed star-crossed yaoi and I'm so excited for it. I'm already so obsessed with the hints that have been dropped in vol 1. i foresee that jiling will become my fav priest ship bc they are both sooo cool. they have the coolest concepts and aesthetics. they're gonna be such a power couple. I'm dying to know who they were to each other in the past.

also, Arjin and his people deserved better!!! I will d1e on that hill. it was so upsetting reading how his people were so kind and peaceful and helped humans but then were cruelly betrayed and then brutally slaughtered.

the end of volume 1 left us with more questions than answers and I'm dying to know the full truth of what actually happened and who everyone actually is to each other, etc. at the end of vol 1 I already feel hooked on the series bc the mystery was so intriguingly set up, and i desperately need more!

[heed the content warnings in the carrd for this novel bc there were a lot of disturbing scenes (e.g. body horror, live eating of a human) and heavy themes like genocide]

This is my first novel by Priest and I came in blind + not knowing what to expect. I honestly still don't know what's happening there are so many secrets!!

- Xuan Ji is so funny and so many of his bitchy comments made me laugh out loud. He's an excellent pov character; I enjoyed the modern sensibility he adds to the events in the novel (and the past), but what I like the most about him is that he doesn't tell the reader everything that he's thinking until he has to. We are told that this is the kind of person he is (and that he's similar to Sheng Lingyuan in this aspect), but it's still a surprise (and a pleasure) to actually see it happening in real time. Seeing him figure out Sheng Lingyuan's schemes before they bear fruit is so fun.

- Sheng Lingyuan is a bit harder to understand and the first volume left me with more questions than answers. Honestly I would have pegged this series as urban fantasy but Sheng Lingyuan belongs to the horror genre fully 😂

- This is a personal opinion/taste, but while I think Priest's writing style (at least from what can be seen in this translation) is crisp and sharp, there are times when they drop one too many metaphors to describe how Xuan Ji is feeling. And it's only noticeable because the writing is crisp and sharp: if the intent is clear the first time, there's no need for the second time. Again, this is personal taste and it doesn't happen often but I do pay attention when it does.

The Rosmei copy has a dust cover without the characters on it and I think having both options is really nice. The flyleaf is shiny and makes me think of fire, so that's a good choice. I notice also that the back of the book has a different flyleaf that's a sort of pearly white? The design for this book is honestly amazing.

Closer to a 4.5, I would say! Priest is my favorite danmei author. I have a problem starting every priest book I've read. These are both true statements. I am of the opinion that every priest novel struggles with a slow, almost infodump focused start. priest almost always wants to rush the establishment of the world, like taking a bullet train through it. Thus, the starts can be a slog. This book starts witch action, and I'd mark chapter 3-4 as the moment where the Plot Starts Happening.

I'm happy to say that this book is better at the whole 'start' thing. While I think some pacing issues are still prevalent, it's definitely an improvement, and you can tell it's because this is one of her more recent novels.

In this book we have Xuan Ji, a self described underpaid civil servant with supernatural power, and Shen Lingyuan, an Emperor from ancient times back from the dead. This book starts off with great emotional beats from the prologue itself, and everytime you get to know more and more about him? the emotional beats increase. However, this book isn't only focused on characters. There is also the plot, which in itself has its own strong points and emotional beats. I won't go into spoiler territory but it was genuinely horrifying and heartbreaking to see the plot point of the book unravel. With the whole reincarnation and supposedly mysterious origins of Xuan Ji, this book also alludes to the past a lot! I am excited to see the future reveals, because it's strongly hinted that there's just... something drawing and tying our two leads to each other!

Anyways. I am very impatiently waiting for the second volume now.

This book is a prime example of if you were say, the MC, who was constantly mumbling to yourself, "Great, what else can go wrong?" While proceeding to have one disaster after the next follow and still proceed to ask yourself the same question.

I like the pacing to this one more than how Coins of Destiny was handled; however I also hated the pacing too, as one long scene spanned over a few chapters. I understood why though as the chapters are written in an arc style with a seamless flow, so it makes sense with *how* it was handled. But some moments seemed to drag on like a battle in DBZ despite the fast pacing with the overall book itself. lol

I originally described this to a friend as a comfy vibe between Coins of Destiny (priest) and Legend of Exorcism (Fei Tian Ye Xiang). However, after getting through this, I revoke my "comfy" vibe remark altogether. lol It is still a nice read, but it has a lot of gory stuff happening and definitely some enemies to lovers. It's a blend of modern day with historical danmei, where modern day is the now and current while the historical aspect regards the past. As someone who prefers historical danmei, if you like plot involving Yao, you should consider this. Personally, despite some smaller complaints, I really did enjoy this - though not so much where it ends.

The writing of tension and suspense is masterful. It lost me a little in the end of the 2nd part (although i'm wondering if it's all comprised in that volume?), because due to the nature of a flashback the tension can't work as well. Still, I'm very interested in seeing where this plot and these wild characters will lead us!

So funny story, this is actually the FOURTH version of this arc I have experienced. I have watched the donghua, I have read the manhua. I have even listened to the audio drama. Somehow Im already a big fan of liehuo despite being unable to read the book itself, because until now, there was no available english translation of the whole thing. But I have yearned for it for so long. And now its here! And the translation is incredible. Im so glad Ill get to experience the whole story in this great translation.

As much as I love the donghua, this is obviously the best way to experience the great story. I love Priests writing and her dry humor and her snarky characters so much. I thought I already understood how much jiling as couple are an absolute bastard4bastard couple but no, theyre so much worse in the book. I adore them. Their snark flirting is so good. Their dynamic is my everything.

I have to admit tho that what I loved about reexperiencing at least this one arc is the added details. The other adaptations completely missed the point on just how. Inhumane. Xuan Ji is. Hes not a human, but hes not a yao either. The creep factor of when he stops smiling, the pronounced loneliness of his being. None of that made it out of the book and I loved seeing it here. I cannot wait to read the next volumes. Wish I was already reading them 😭😭😭😭 Please I need to know what happens!!! What the fuck ARE these two clowns!!

Priest is the author of this. This is my third Priest novel. First was Guardian which I found myself either really engaged with or it being a chore to get through. The second was Coins of Destiny which I hated. Drowning sorrows in a raging fire is in the same category as Guardian for me. When I was engaged I was enthralled. I am enjoying both Xuan Ji and Sheng Lingyuan. I especially like Sheng Lingyuan. I found him to be well written and truly fascinating. I am also interested in their dynamic and the mystery surrounding them both. I found the later tale of the Shamans to be heartbreaking but also interesting. However the beginning after the prologue took forever. I found myself bored and when I was not bored I was confused by the non stop information dumping. I am so grateful to annotating because I had to keep going back and rereading stuff I highlighted. I understand this is a first volume and we have to establish this world but this is a constant problem I have with the authors works. I also could have done without the fat shamming of one of the characters. Multiple times cracks were made about the characters weight and eating. I assume it was meant to be funny but I didn’t find it amusing. I am going to continue the series as I am interested and invested enough but I might have to do more investigating before I buy Priest novels. Her writing style is hard to understand at times. At least for me.

to preface this review, this one volume is the only one i've read from this series and i watched the donghua ages ago but now i'm pretty sure some parts of it were changed.

i like the political way Priest writes (from what i read in Sha Po Lang as well) and this translation clearly carries that through to english. i went into this after Global Examination so i was surprised that the romance is so subtle that it's barely there at all. it really is an amicable enemies to lovers and the slow burn is slowly burning. Xuan Ji and Sheng Lingyuan are both out to trick and end each other and i love the tension between them.

" it was as though a grudge spanning millenia had finally ended, or he'd caught a glimpse of dawn after being trapped in a boundless night. "

still, there is a Lot of exposition and talking in this volume. the mirage butterfly plot is so interesting and frankly the first arc 'The Madman' had me on the edge of my seat to find out just what was going on. poor Xuan Ji dealing with all this on his literal first day on the job. Bi Chunsheng was very interesting character and it is very much a plot twist that she's the one behind the dark descent.

Arjin and Sheng Lingyuan's backstory is still super interesting to me and that cliffhanger was just pure evil. i hope volume 2 is out soon. i need to know.

Wow! That was an amazing book. I kept thinking about it and I was itching to read it while busy at work or sleeping.

This is Priest best world. I love the Yao and other creatures in this story.

We follow Xuan Ji, new to the ARB, some sort of magical creatures department that monitors metahumans, humans born with powers of some kind. Some of them are mundane, they can feel an emotion here or there. Some are sort of amazing.

Like many Priest novels, the love couple has not been set up yet. I have no real clue who it's going to be. It's it the 3,000 year old Emperor re-awakened, or the ARB head. Who knows. I haven't seem many sparks fly. Xuan Ji and the old Emperor Wu have the most conflict and spend the most time together, so maybe them. Xuan Ji fights with the ARB head as well, but it doesn't feel like sparks yet.

I love Priest. Faraway Wanderers is my favorite story of hers so far. This is either tied or a close second. We will see how it goes once the story opens further.

I was drawn in to this story. The characters were fun and all the stuff going on was interesting. We get dropped into the world the jet keeps flying fast. It moves. We still get to know the characters.

I can't wait for the next book. This was amazing.

This is my second Priest novel. This one I really took my time to read, but in the end, I ended up liking it.

It's an enemies-to-lovers slow burn set in the midst of a complex, intriguing plot spanning both ancient and modern times.

It starts off with Emperor Wu, Sheng Xiao (Sheng Lingyuan), throwing himself into the flames of the Crimson Abyss; 3,000 years later, he's awakened. Then you meet Xuan Ji, the newly appointed director of the Disaster Response Department, in charge of taking care of supernatural occurrences and their aftermaths. His first case on the job, of course, involves the 3,000-year-old demon Sheng Lingyuan. The two end up fighting upon their first meeting but are soon forced to tolerate each other's presence, never passing up an opportunity to try to kill each other. In the end, they kind of end up working together, gaining a better understanding of each other.

I loved the characters of Sheng Lingyuan and Xuan Ji; they were very funny.

Bi Chunsheng's story was dark; I felt bad for her. She couldn't trust anyone and was paranoid.

Arjin and Sheng Lingyuan's backstory was interesting. I can't wait to know more about Sheng Lingyuan's past. That cliffhanger! I can't wait for Volume 2.
