Hiro Mashima (Jap: 真島ヒロ) is a Japanese manga artist.
He gained success with his first serial Rave, published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1999 to 2005. His best-selling work, Fairy Tail, published in the same magazine from 2006 to 2017, became one of the best-selling manga series with over 72 million copies in print. Mashima began the currently ongoing Edens Zero in 2018.
Fairy Tail won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen manga in 2009, and Mashima was given the Harvey Awards International Spotlight award in 2017 and the Fauve Special Award at the 2018 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
If you miss Fairy Tail or you're feeling nostalgic, then this is the new series for you, it is Fairy Tail in space. Granted since I just finished Fairy Tail earlier this month, it was a little disconcerting seeing the same faces on slightly different characters. Definitely interesting, and I like the concept of Space Fantasy so I can't wait to see where this leads to.
I vaguely remember reading the first few chapters of this I believe. Felt like Hiro Mashima got lazy and threw out the same character archetypes he dished out in Fairy Tail. I mean come on, at least be a little less obvious with the designs.
However, if there's a Gajeel copy-paste clone, I am skipping to that chapter ;] What? I can't help it.
Hiro Mashima's new series Edens Zero is rated Teen and his recent work Fairy Tail, this series looks to be following a familiar formula of Friendship, Fighting for what you believe in, and a young person that is to strong and simple to be corrupted by potential evil to come (ahhh good times.) Although there is gun fire, physical combat, and a degree of ecchiness this series is off to a good start so use your best judgment if any sort of violence and fanservice bothers you before getting into this series. Also you might notice some similar looking characters from Masima's past works like Happy and Plue (as well as others drawn into the background.) Have fun playing the Fairy Tail Edition of Where's Waldo. :)
Granbell Kingdom is an abandoned amusement park where Rebecca and her companion Happy have come to make a video for their B-cube channel named Aoneko. As the first guests in the past 100 years Rebecca and Happy are the center of attention as the robots controlling the theme park do their best to make their (and by this primarily Rebecca's) dreams come true. While on a quest they meet the strange boy named Shiki who has been living in the amusement park and considered the robots his friends and family. This is the beginning of Shiki's destiny as certain factors force him to leave the Granbell Kingdom to seek new experiences and hopefully meet new friends. Only time will tell who he is able to befriend or how his destiny will unfold but I am looking forward to reading more of Hiro Machima's Sci-fi adventure unfold. :)
There are a few touching moments I really enjoyed in the first volume but my favorite moment would have to be Happy transforming into guns and Rebecca going all Ducky on some bad people. Don't mess with Rebecca's friends. :)
This series was so fun. We pick up with two B-Cubers Rebecca and Happy as they arrive on this planet Granbell and find its filled with machines but there is one human named Shiki and they enjoy their times here until machines act evil and Shiki has to fight them and leave the planet. Turns out it was a ploy by them to send him off planet so that he can finally leave as he is special. That moment alone made this series one of my favorite. The next few chs are we go to Blue Garden, the home of the Guild and meet in different adventures and diff people and its more building up the world. But we meet Elcy Crimson and later we go to the past to meet Dr Wise Steiner. This series starts off really well and Hiro's art has never been better and the space setting makes it all the more fun and that dragon drawing WOW.

I was kind of reluctant to give this manga to go after the disaster that was Fairy Tail. After a couple of chapters, I was fairly surprised how enjoyable it was. Then again, so was Fairy Tail and we all know how that ended. He still rely on the friendship troupe a little too much for my liking and the dialogue isn't the greatest, but it's toned down compared to Fairy Tail. I'm going to continue to read it, because I like sci-fi more than fantasy and I hope the Hiro don't fall for the same trappings as he did with his last work.
I am so very confused If this isnt somehow connected to Fairy Tail then character designs (and names) are very lazy. I did like the cameos of some of the characters from FT but I definitely need a couple more volumes to figure this out. The plot is kinda confusing but I think its intentional.
We first meet Shiki, a boy who has spent most of his life living on a kingdom full of robots that he’s very close to. Everything changes for him when blonde internet influencer Rebecca and her cat Happy visit the kingdom and an unexpected surprise will shift his life, causing him to flee with them above through the Sakura Cosmos, unbeknownst to him that this will be the start of his new destiny.
“EG” is just an exhilarating space adventure that’s full of story and surprises. Off the bat, it’s pretty much just like Mashima’s other series “Fairy Tail” with its very familiar characters and feel but also with a sci-fi flavor. For now, the story seems to have some buildup for our trio. To space we go. A (100%/Outstanding)
Hiro Mashima is apparently an adherent of Osamu Tezuka's Star System. Instead of designing a new character for every manga he wrote, Tezuka reused the same designs over and over, treating them as actors whom he cast in different roles for each story. A number of older manga artists have used the Star System, most notably Mitsuru Adachi and Leiji Matsumoto, though few modern artists touch it.
But then this series has a throwback vibe to it, including bits of narration that feel straight out of Queen Emeraldas and a girl walking around in a Harlock outfit, so perhaps that's fitting.
Whyever he did it, Mashima's new series is essentially Natsu, Lucy and Happy recast as space adventurers. The vibe, in addition to a heavy dose of Matsumoto, feels like Dragonball meets Futurama. I usually get tired of Shonen Jump-style series after six or seven volumes, but at this point Mashima's still has my attention.
Right looking at this series without fairy tail in mind, its quite an interesting concept, space adventures is something I havent seen too much of personally so this is a welcome concept. The characters so far are rather interesting, im looking forward to seeing shikis background, plus Rebecca and happy defiantly have some secret background too! Overall a good first volume and that last panel gets you really thinking!
Now with a look at fairy tail. I understand people looking at the series and comparing it to Hiros other work but where is the harm in that. It was successful and really good so obviously they will dip into it. I like the use of old character designs as it brings that air of nostalgia to it while still being new and refreshing. Although they both have the same character designs they are different so don't compare the two too much and just enjoy another good series like im going to do!
This story seems interesting, and it also feels like Fairy Tail, but somehow a little different...? I know that this is written by the same person, though. I still enjoyed the first volume!
I actually am liking this better than the start of Fairy Tail I really like the sci-fi story it is really interesting. I really like the characters especially Rebecca,Shiki and Happy all three of them are such interesting characters similar but different to the other characters this author has created. They are such interesting characters with the great relationship between Rebecca and Happy Shiki fits well into all that with his over friendliness and very interesting personality. I am really loving the plot it starts with Rebecca and Happy going to the place Shiki has been and it goes from there the plot is so very interesting.
I thought this was a spin off from “Fairytail” but after doing some research, it’s not. It’s a completely different story, with nee characters and a vast universe. However, to me it’s not quite original, Happy, and other familiar looking characters drives me to not see the story as it’s own nee journey .
This is not Fairy Tail and yet many of the characters look like FT characters.
The first 2 chapters are all about friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends, friends and friends which got a bit cringe and annoying but the rest of the story seems interesting enough to make me want to keep reading.

From the ebook blurb- PATH TO DESTINY
At Granbell Kingdom, an abandoned amusement park, Shiki has lived his entire life among machines. But one day, Rebecca and her cat companion Happy appear at the park’s front gates. Little do these newcomers know that this is the first human contact Granbell has had in a hundred years! As Shiki stumbles his way into making new friends, his former neighbors stir at an opportunity for a robo-rebellion…
And when his old homeland becomes too dangerous, Shiki must join Rebecca and Happy on their spaceship and escape into the boundless cosmos.
Review- A cute action adventure beginning of a series. Shiki is the only human living on a forgotten planet with robots until a couple of B- cubers (think Youtube in space) Rebecca and Happy come to film there. The first few chapters are about getting off Granbell but the main point of the story is the coming adventure of the trio as they go in search of the mother goddess of the universe. Of course there is more to the hero Shiki than he or his new friends know and that is going to be real plot of the series. If you have read Mashima’s other series Fairy Tail then you are going to see some familiar faces in the main characters but I did not find distracting instead it felt like seeing old friends in a new story, having a new life and adventures. I do not think that Eden Zero is going to break the mold for a shonen manga but it was a fun read. If you like shonen adventure manga then you should give this series a try.
I give this manga a Four out of Five stars. I get nothing for my review and I was given this manga as a gift.
2020 Review I’ve watched the Fairy Tail anime (which is probably one of my favorite anime ever) and when I heard about this getting an anime, I was very curious. And boy, was I surprised. I really like the characters and plot so far and I can’t wait read more into this. 😊
I liked this way more than I expected to. I am excited to experience something new but that gives me that nice nostalgic thrill of the familiar from Mashima's Fariy Tail series. I can't wait to read more!
Hiro Mashima's work keeps getting better and better with each series he makes. Edens Zero is about a male named Shiki who travels with is newly found friends on an adventure through space. His friends are Rebecca, Happy, Weisz, and one of the Four Shining Stars, Witch.
