For Alex Chambers, the burden of past mistakes hinders his ability to move forward in life, stifling his readiness to embrace the present. His journey to Silver Springs Health and Rehabilitation Centre was meant to be a path to redemption, a chance to make amends for youthful errors. Little did he know that fate had a different plan in store.

From the moment he steps into the facility’s weathered corridors, Alex is greeted not by the easy path he envisioned but by a series of challenges that test his resolve in ways he never anticipated. His hopes of finding forgiveness from the woman he wronged are dashed, replaced by a new, unexpected caring for Mae Seasons, a plucky, foul-mouthed, unapologetic senior resident of Silver Springs.

With her sharp wit and disregard for social niceties, Mae becomes Alex’s unlikely companion on a journey of self-discovery. As he struggles to unearth Mae’s secrets while guarding his own, Alex finds himself gradually unravelling the knots of his past, reevaluating his present, and tentatively embracing a future filled with newfound hope.

Through laughter and tears, trials and triumphs, Alex and Mae form a bond that transcends age and circumstance, forged through a series of comically bizarre, heart-warming, and enlightening adventures that prove one can find friendship and love when least expected, in the strangest of places, and with the most unlikely people.
Autumn is a poignant tale of forgiveness, redemption, and the transformative power of human connection. It reminds us that, no matter our past mistakes or present struggles, love and friendship can bloom in the unlikeliest of places, bringing light to even the darkest corners of our lives.

Autumn is an absolutely beautiful, breathtaking, heartbreaking story of hope, redemption and human connections. This book isn't in any way something I wanted to binge, it was a book I want to take my time with, savor, enjoy each character connection, each relationship. Marc's writing creates an immerseful experience for the reader. With his vivid descriptions, his calm writing technique, his perfect prose, his masterful dialogues, everything meshed together made for a truly beautiful read.

MacDonald has created some amazing characters. Some of the most likeable I've read recently. They were an absolute highlight for me. The complexity in which the author built them, the layers to uncover throughout it was just such a fun experience. The banter between Mae & Alex was the funniest, but also meaningful in the more serious moments. I went through a rollercoaster of emotions while reading. This story is filled with so much realism that you truly relate to the characters and feel like you know them.

This book was a beautiful little work of art. It is lyrical and evocative, bringing this story to life. A resonating story that will have readers reflecting on their past experiences. Very excited to see what MacDonald comes up with next!

Book review
Autumn by Marc MacDonald

🍂Our MMC is seeking penance and forgiveness at Silver springs care Home but what he finds is a friend, an ending and a new beginning.

Characters
❤️ I loved the descriptions and personalities of all the side characters
FMC- Mae- sassy, Lonely, devious, full of Life and secrets
Dwayne/Fred- colleagues
Susanne- boss lady who takes pride in her work
Phil- desk clerk who sees all and knows all
Erica - a possible new beginning, she is a light at the end of a dark tunnel
Autumn- first love, first regret
MMC- Alex- quiet and full of self doubt he doesnt believe he deserves forgiveness or a second chance at love

Thoughts
This book is all about redemption and human connection. The author explores the idea that people’s Lives can change direction based on one moment or mistake. For our MMC, these mistakes lead to guilt that he cannot see past, it becomes a heavy weight on his shoulders, that now defines his life and purpose. For our FMC, her past is never far from her heart and she protects it and her found family fiercely.
The author asks the reader for compassion and empathy while our MMC searches to forgive himself and find his path onward - How does Alex absolve himself of perceived fault, How does he move on /move forward after his loss and heartbreak? How does Mae? Ah Mae Seasons. She is the heart of this story. Her voice came through loud and clear ( it was usually shouting and swearing) . I adored the relationship between Mae and Alex. It was volatile and full of anger, pranks, animosity and respect… leading eventually to mutual friendship and love.

Overall
Readers will find heartbreak and hope at Silver Springs.

Thank you to the author for my digital copy in return for an honest review. Opinions expressed are my own.

Marc Macdonald’s Autumn took me on an emotional journey I wasn’t quite prepared for but absolutely needed. From the first page, I was utterly drawn into Alex’s world. He’s the kind of narrator who doesn’t just tell a story. He brings you inside it with humor, raw honesty, and internal dialogue that made me laugh out loud more than once. There’s something incredibly relatable about him: his uncertainties, his reflections, and especially his reasons for ending up in Silver Springs.

What starts as a quiet exploration of personal healing quickly becomes much more. Mae, who initially seems like a secondary figure, blossoms into a character with one of the most beautiful backstories I’ve read in a long time. Her depth, resilience, and quiet grace caught me off guard in the best way. Watching the bond between Alex and Mae unfold was like sitting beside a fire on a cold day; it warmed, softened, and stayed with me long after I finished the last page.

Marc Macdonald’s storytelling is truly splendid. He crafts scenes with sensitivity and subtle power, allowing the emotional weight to build in effortless ways. The prose is both elegant and grounded, painting Silver Springs as a place that feels real, lived in, and quietly magical.

Autumn made me laugh, cry, and, most importantly, feel. It’s a testament to Macdonald’s gift as a writer that such a simple premise could hold such depth and emotional resonance. I’ll be thinking about Alex and Mae for a long time.

Thank you to Marc MacDonald for letting me be an ARC reader for Autumn!

Fans of Fredrik Backman will love this book!

Marc MacDonald has created such a beautiful story with carefully crafted characters that come to life!

Alex Chambers arrives at Silver Springs Health and Rehabilitation Centre with one goal: to make penance for his past actions. His plans are thwarted when he is unwittingly assigned to the toughest patient in Silver Springs: Mae Seasons.

She is witty, grouchy, and at first a tough pill to swallow. And she makes Alex’s time at Silver Springs a living hell. The things she says could make a sailor blush, and her actions would land anyone else in prison or a psych ward.

Mae and Alex are thrown together against their will, but what occurs is a journey of rediscovery and growing respect between them. Their friendship grows into something I can only describe as a beautiful miracle.
Neither Mea nor Alex knew they needed each other, and they form a bond that cannot be broken- even if they fight and bicker on more than one occasion.

Alex slowly shares his story with Mae, and she shares hers- only to find out their stories are very similar. Mae urges Alex not to live in his past decisions and make peace with his past so he can move on and have a full life that she never had because of her past.

I loved this book! It was well paced, well written, and I really enjoyed the various adventures these two characters went on that ultimately brought them closer together!

There is an important lesson to be learned within the pages of this book about forgiveness and human connection- but you’ll need to read it to learn it!

What a great first read of 2025! Mae was such a great character, a true hoot! The mentioned drinking games sent me for a trip down memory lane. Happy to support a local authors debut novel! My fellow Niagara good readers must pick this one up.

Fans of Terry Fallis and Fredrik Backman’s A Man Called Ove, will enjoy this debut from Canadian writer Marc MacDonald.
We have a bit of a mystery as to why Alex has come to the seniors home where he’s assigned Mae, a cantankerous resident. But the best scenes are when they both let down their emotional guards.
What propels this narrative is MacDonald’s strong command of language and his excellent writing.
A great read!

I really enjoyed Autumn- it reminded me of books like A Man Called Ove, The Rosie Project, and The Little Old Lady Who Broke All the Rules!

The story centers around Alex, who arrives at Silver Springs Health Centre hoping for redemption, but things don’t go as planned. I loved the quirky, flawed characters, especially Mae – she’s sharp, hilarious, and unapologetically herself. The dynamic between Alex and Mae is heartwarming and real, and I loved seeing how their unexpected bond grew over time.

The mystery surrounding why Alex is volunteering at the center kept me hooked – it added an intriguing layer to the story that kept me wanting to know more. It’s a beautiful mix of humor, self-discovery, and emotional depth. Definitely a story that reminds you how love, friendship, and second chances can show up when you least expect them!

What a lovely book! A 4.5 from me! This novel is filled with so much detail you can see the images inside your head and the writing is so calm and lovely it almost reads like poetry.
Both main characters were EXTREMELY like-able I loved how the main character, Alex cracked jokes with the reader (often times dirty, my kind of humor) and I adored how rambunctious and fun Mae was despite being 91 years old.
I can't even begin to express how much I adored this book. I laughed, I cried and I didn't want this novel to end. I don't give star ratings to Indie authors but I can tell you that I completely and absolutely recommend reading this book at its publishing date. Thank you Marc for an arc copy of this, this was truly heart warming!

The thing I love about reading literary fiction is that these books tend to feel like works of art. Yes, I know all books are works of art, but this genre more so. From the complex character arcs to the detailed, diversified writing structures, it reads like music, tugging at the heart strings in a way no other genre can.

And Marc MacDonald’s debut, Autumn, certainly falls within that definition.

The reader starts by following Alex on his journey to his town’s rehabilitation centre, Silver Springs. While we know he’s going there to make up for events in his past, we don’t know exactly what for until Alex puts the pieces together for us down the novel’s timeline.

At the centre, he meets Mae. His pairing with her is unexpected, as he’s supposed to volunteer on a whole other level, but sometimes the unexpected is exactly what’s supposed to happen.

And in this case, for Alex, you could say it saves him in a way.

Challenged by Mae’s tough demeanor, he experiences conversations and moments that push him to his boundaries, making him face his past and realize that healing and moving forward is possible, even if it’s not in the way he originally anticipated.

If you like authors like Fredrik Backman and Emma Donoghue, then this novel will be right up your alley. MacDonald breathes life into the characters, making you feel like you’re there with them at every moment.

I will say, MacDonald’s writing shines through in the dialogue. To say that I laughed out loud at almost every page isn’t an exaggeration. The banter between Alex and Mae, while serious and emotional at times, had me clutching my sides and covering my mouth with my hand as an unexpected bout of humour escaped my body.

This humour is a healthy balance to the emotions and serious aspects that come into play near the end of the novel.

I rated it four stars for the best reason of all: I wanted more. I wanted to dive even deeper into the pasts and progressions of the characters, but what Marc gives is absolutely beautiful and enjoyable too.

If you’re looking for a lyrical, witty, and emotional fall read, look no further than Autumn.

Originally reviewed at Books Etc.

I read a lot of self-published books when I first started blogging (almost 14 years ago!). Slowly they started to fall away, but indie authors are making a comeback and I’m trying to do better at reading and reviewing more of them. To help in that mini goal, I recently read (and very much enjoyed) Autumn by Marc MacDonald, who also happens to be a local (to me) author - a nice bonus!

I was a bit worried when I started reading this one because, while I can tell MacDonald is an incredibly talented writer, he was being a bit too…descriptive, flowery, and verbose for a contemporary fiction novel. It kind of reminded me what my creative writing would have been like in grade 12. I would have been trying to show off all the big words I knew and cram in all the literary elements I could. The way the book was written wasn't a bad thing, exactly. Like I said, MacDonald is talented! But I think a trick with writing contemporary fiction - and I say this as someone who doesn’t write fiction - is making it readable and relatable to the reader.

Wordy writing aside, the story MacDonald wove was so compelling. I was incredibly invested in Alex’s life and making sure he was able to course-correct his life and, you know, actually start living it. I enjoyed myself immensely as I “met” all the Silver Springs staff and residents right alongside Alex.

I’m not entirely sure I bought the reason Alex was feeling so much grief. I also wish it had been revealed earlier on in the story. I don’t think it would have taken away from his path to absolution. By the time I learned why he was at Silver Springs, I had kind of moved on. Now, Mae’s story? I didn’t mind her story being stretched out. Which is why I think knowing Alex’s motivations earlier on paired with not knowing Mae’s story would have still worked for the narrative.

Speaking of Mae, she was a delight. Yes, I liked Alex and he was a strongly written character. But there was something about Mae that added an extra sparkle to the story MacDonald has given us. Maybe it’s that we just don’t have enough vivacious senior characters in our books these days. Or it’s that the hijinks the pair got up to were just so enjoyable to read. Watching the friendship grow between Alex and Mae was the highlight of the story.

Autumn is a book that will make you feel all the feels. Marc MacDonald’s debut novel will make you laugh and will probably also make you cry. But once you turn the last page, you’ll be left with a full heart and a desire to read whatever he writes next.

Marc MacDonald's "Autumn" is a moving exploration of transformation and the passage of time, skillfully weaving together themes of change, nostalgia, and personal growth. The author's prose is both lyrical and evocative, bringing the autumn season to life in vivid detail. Readers (and myself included) can almost feel the crisp air and see the colorful leaves, creating such a rich backdrop for the story.

The characters in "Autumn" are thoughtfully developed, each representing different facets of change. MacDonald delves into their internal struggles and relationships, making them relateable and multidimensional. The interplay between the characters' lives and the changing season serves as a powerful metaphor for their personal journeys.

The beginning skillfully captures the readers' attention with a well-written buildup leading to the story's conclusion, which underscores the inevitability of change and the beauty that can come from it.

MacDonald's ability to evoke emotion through his writting is commendable, and readers will likely find themselves reflecting on their own experiences of transformation. Overall, "Autumn" is a thoughtful and nicely written novel that resonates deeply, making it a worthwhile read for those seeking insight into the complexities of life and change.

I wish Goodreads would allow for 4.5 stars!

Burdened by past mistakes, Alex Chambers arrives at Silver Springs Health and Rehabilitation Centre seeking redemption, only to find himself facing unexpected challenges. His journey of atonement takes a turn when he’s assigned to care for Mae Seasons, a sharp-tongued, unapologetic resident who quickly becomes the heart of the story. As their unlikely friendship develops, Alex begins to unravel his past and discover a new sense of hope.

“Autumn” is a beautiful comforting story that filled me with joy. Marc has crafted a narrative rich with themes of self-discovery, found family, and forgiveness. The story truly finds its rhythm around chapter four, but it’s Mae who transforms the reading experience. Her character is wonderfully reminiscent of Estelle from “Golden Girls”—grouchy, a little insane, but filled with wisdom. Mae’s dynamic presence not only carries the story but also makes Alex’s journey of self-discovery deeply engaging.

Silver Springs, the setting of the novel, is a character in its own right, brought to life with vivid and beautiful descriptions (along with the residents and staff). As summer transitions into autumn, this book has become a perfect read for the season and will undoubtedly be a comfort for many. I highly recommend it.

“Chasing a ghost isn’t impossible because we can’t see it: it’s impossible because they live where we cannot”

How do I even begin to encapsulate this novel into coherent words?? The book follows Alex, who has started to volunteer at Silver Springs, the local rehabilitation center. This is where he meets Mae, a vibrant, witty, incredibly sarcastic spitfire. They’re thrown together and through the story they open up to each other and a beautiful friendship is fostered.

Macdonald is an incredibly skilled writer and has woven a very poignant story on grief, love, and healing. That being said, I did struggle for a good 50 pages as I was finding it difficult to be immersed with the overtly flowery and wordy chapters in the beginning. I also felt like Alex’s whole reason for being at Silver Springs could’ve been revealed earlier. I do feel like it took longer than I anticipated for it to be revealed and I honestly hadn’t really cared that much on the why. I did like the letters being sprinkled throughout the story for Mae’s reveal, I felt like that worked and was important especially for the lessons Mae was intending to provide to Alex.

Mae reminded me a lot of my great-grandmother who was a complete spitfire and it was my very favorite thing about her. Overall, this is a very sweet story and I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamic between Alex and Mae.

Thank you to the author for sending me an e-ARC of this book!

Based on the title “Autumn”, I was thinking this was going to be some sort of seasonal fall read and I was completely wrong — in a good way. The meaning behind the title makes the story far more interesting in my opinion.

If you’re looking for a unique read about moving through grief and life, with a somewhat peculiar friendship between a young man and an elderly woman living in what is essentially a nursing home, this book may be for you!

I found the pacing well done, although the writing sometimes felt wordy — yet it was still obvious to me that the author is a skilled writer. I found myself laughing at most of the interactions with Mae.

The unexpected mention, and then somewhat brushing off, of the domestic violence scene left a distasteful feeling for me. Although in hindsight, I understand that this was the entire point as to why the main character was where he is in his life journey. It was just an initial shock to hear that *this* is how the character’s life was so drastically changed.

Overall, I may not be the targeted audience for this book, but I thought the story was interesting and Mae’s character was a hoot! Blunt grandmas with zero filter 😂

🍁“Autumn is a poignant tale of forgiveness, redemption, and the transformative power of human connection. It reminds us that, no matter of our past mistakes or present struggles, live and friendship can bloom in the unlikeliest of places, bringing light to even the darkest corners of our lives.”

The story follows Alex, as he begins a stint as a volunteer at Silver Springs Health and Rehab Centre, in hopes to move forward with his life and make amends for something he did in his past. He is paired with a quick witted, foul mouthed 91year old woman named Mae. The unlikely friendship that blooms between them, in between the dry wit and banter, is truly beautiful. True friends are the rare people who come to find you in a dark place and lead you back to the light. This was Mae for Alex.
This book gave me all the feels - was a lovely reminder to let go of the past and make space for new beginnings.

Thank you, Marc, for trusting me with your beautiful book in exchange for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a heartwarming and uplifting read.

Not my usual read but I am so grateful for the opportunity to have read it. There's lots of really strong imagery and entertaining dynamics between the characters. I mean, there are no words to describe Mae Seasons! She's a firecracker for sure. But even the ones who seem to not let anything bother them have stories to tell.

Autumn is a book on grief and love, so often those two go hand in hand. We've all had "what ifs" and guilt over our decisions that impact how we move forward. Reading characters going through that is powerful. At times I was so frustrated with Alex because he seemed to just be talking in circles with no perspective on anything outside of his guilt. Then again, I've had moments where I've been in his shoes, unable to break the hold my feelings have on me.

Itty bitty detail I loved was the grand gesture being delayed by having to scrape ice and snow off the car. It very much describes life in Canada in the winter. No matter how urgent things feel, the car must be cleared of snow and ice first 🤦‍♀️

“Autumn” is a heartfelt story about friendship, love, and loss—everything you want in a good book. It really warms my heart to see the unlikely friendship between Mae and Alex unfold. Mae is such an inspiration, reminding us to live life to the fullest, no matter our age.

Alex is equally inspiring, showing us the importance of recognizing our choices and loving deeply. Their bond is truly special, and the way they support each other is beautiful.

I also want to give a shout-out to Marc MacDonald for his wonderful writing. The story flows so easily, making it a joy to read. This book really encourages you to reflect on your own life and relationships. Highly recommend!

I don’t want to spoil how the title “Autumn” relates to the story, you’ll have to read and find out!

Alex Chambers had only one thing on his mind when he arrived at Silver Springs, confronting his past. Unfortunately for Alex, the present holds a few obstacles.

Mae Seasons. Mae turns Alex’s world upside down and gives it an extra little shake. She isn’t someone you want to mess with and Alex is learning that the hard way. What he thought would be an uneventful pairing leads to an unlikely duo. Mae and Alex uncover pieces of each other’s pasts that heal parts of themselves.

In Autumn, you meet these two characters from different backgrounds, come together to create the same future. Showing that no matter your age, no matter your experiences, you can find a friend in just about anyone. This novel feels like a warm hug, one we all desperately need.

The complex relationship between a troubled young man and a feisty woman in her nineties is not something I’ve ever read before. It makes for a fresh and enjoyable read. I also love the way the titular character, Autumn, is an omnipresent character throughout, but her role in the story is not what you initially expect it to be.
The tone in this one rapidly shifts from humour to pathos, which is skilfully done. Having recently visited the battlefields in Normandy in search of my great uncles grave, this particular reference hit close to home.
Lots to enjoy in this one - check it out.

Marc has captured my heart with this story . It’s beautifully written and perfectly told . Honestly one of my favorite parts of this story was his side characters ( Erica being one of my favorites)

The MMC & FMC felt so realistic to me . A true opposites attract storyline in an unusual way ( the MFC was not what I expected when I dove in but I loved her ) with redemption arc throughout. I will forever love the friendships in this book .

I truly hope we get another story in silver springs again soon ❤️ Congrats on a great story !

“Life moves forward with or without us...” ⁣

When Alex shows up at Silver Springs Health and Rehabilitation Center to face his past, he’s paired up with an ornery old woman who has a tendency to scare away her volunteers. Committed to reconciliation of his past, he sticks it out, against all odds.⁣

Caught between an unfinished past and hope for the future, Alex is taken on a journey of self discovery through a series of unexpected, but hilariously wholesome adventures with his unruly 91-year-old companion. ⁣

Ultimately this is an immersive story of love, forgiveness, and finding friendship in the most unlikely places. ⁣

What a beautiful story.
Our perceived mistakes can stain our souls, but redemption is always around the corner if you let it in. This story is a journey through that.
I cackled and cried at Mae, and I just wanted to hug Alex and tell him it's okay. Though I think he needed a Mae to kick his ass.
