Rate this book
Benjamin Sisko is called out of retirement to defeat the Tzenkethi Coalition! Captain Benjamin Sisko’s quest to defeat the killer of gods is at an end, and the Prophets beckon him home to the Celestial Temple. He’s earned his rest, but he no longer wants to retire into godhood. So when Starfleet requests his help to stop a familiar foe, the Tzenkethi Coalition, from launching their fleet across the Alpha Quadrant, Sisko and the Theseus’ crew set out to once again save the galaxy. They team up with Operative Kingsnake (a.k.a. HARRY KIM), but the Tzenkethi leader has surprising allies of his the Romulans! There’s a reason this species of spiritually rich, lizard birds has twice defeated Starfleet in battle. They’re xenophobic, ruthless, and innovative...and confronting them on their home turf, a planet thought to be an organism itself, is a death sentence. In this follow-up to Star Trek, Vol. 1: Godshock and Vol. 2: The Red Path, Volume 3 collects Star Trek issues #13–18 by writers Collin Kelly & Jackson Lanzing with artist Marcus To.

A very entertaining continuation of the dream team crew of the U.S.S. Theseus' run. The cast of named characters gets somewhat trimmed down which is good in my view as it gives those remaining more time to shine.

Star Trek Vol 3: Glass and Bone

The War of the Gods may be over, but Sisko and the 'Theseus' crew are immediately called back into action when a Federation operative known as 'Kingsnake' requests assistance on the Tzenkethi homeworld. The Tzenkethi appear to have made a quantum leap in their engineering skills and are ready to take their warlike ways to the heavens in a manner never before seen. The only option is to try to broker a treaty between the Federation and the Tzenkethi Coalition, before the Romulans and the Cardassians can thwart their efforts.

Some excellent artwork, but this is often a hallmark of the IDW team. However, this is a story in the best traditions of 'Star Trek'. How to resolve a conflict without resorting to war. The sacrifices made by each of the characters are well earned through the text and the cliffhanger should leave everyone eager to see the next volume.

I'm loving the art and spot on characterizations, but 3 volumes in there is too much war and epic conflict and not enough *Trek*. Hopefully the series finds a better balance going forward

I waited a quarter century for Star Trek to cross over with The Primortals and by god it finally happened.

An improvement from the previous books, probably cause it has less prophet-sisko stuff in it. But they are still trying to make Sisko the goat too much.

Not as good as the first two volumes. Making the Tzenkethi dinosaurs is super dorky as is the “badass” Harry Kim fanfic.

I'm still enjoying the characters but these elevated war plots are getting kinda boring. Plus, did they put boobs on a space dinosaur? Sigh.

On paper, this is quintessential Star Trek. A hopeless situation, two warring factions, a planet about to explode, Romulans, dinosaur people, familiar faces (hi Harry!) and a moral paradox right at the end that Sisko manages to solve with a sledgehammer.

But I just didn't gel with this arc as much as the rest of the series up to this point. Maybe it's a little long? Or maybe it was because it was so obviously just cookie-cutter Star Trek - that might be it. This arc could be an episode of any of the TV series, which makes it a little predictable, and it doesn't feel as important as the last few issues. Not that everything needs to be Day Of Blood or destroy the universe or anything, but it feels kinda pedestrian, I think that's it.

Marcus To signs up to do the art for this arc however, so the book still looks great at least.

Okay? I guess? But definitely not my favourite. Maybe I just don't like dinosaurs that much.

So, apparently, I totally skipped a big crossover event (Day of Blood) because it's not available at my library (boo!), which made the beginning of Glass and Bone a steep uphill climb. All the main characters have trauma, even as they celebrate the happy outcome of something.

Maybe I'll find out someday! In any case, the team is soon tasked with a new mission: meet up with a sneaky spy on a planet of battle-hungry reptilians aka dinosaurs. The goal: make sure the reptilians aka dinosaurs don't start a war with their galactic neighbors (even though those neighbors are clearly itching for a fight).

It's classic Star Trek stuff, with lots of clever puzzle-solving and a decent bit of phaser shooting. A key plot point relies on planetary geology, which is delightful for a nerd like me. After the rough going in the initial issues, I easily settled back into a fun, action-packed, yet still cerebral Star Trek adventure. Hopefully I don't miss the next event...

I love this series so much - it reminds me a lot of later seasons DS9 in the thick of the dominion war. I thought this arc with the Tzenkethi was really interesting and it was resolved in such a Trek way. There were also so many good character moments in this - I thought Tom talking to his daughter, Miral, was really sweet and the fact Data told Lt. Descheeni to look after Spot when he shut down was just so good, the characterisation in this is great. I also really liked Kim & Sato's storylines in this. And the ending?! So excited to get answers about the Pleroma.

I also have to mention I loved the little cameo of Catrin, Dewydd and Uma from the Joyride series (that a lot of the same creative team worked on) in #13.

Like I've said before, welcome to season 8 of 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine'...

This is very much a continuation of the life and times of Captain Benjamin Sisko. They've added other characters from across the ST franchise to lure in the fans of the other great series. It reads like DS9, the tone is similar, and the art style stays true to the 'photo quality' of the character art.

The most recent addition to the cast?
A very familiar Voyager ensign.

IDW has a hard time missing when they're backing Star Trek. This should scratch the itch of any Trek fan (dare I say, Trekkie?)

Very disappointing, easily the weakest in what's been a surprisingly good series so far. Glass and Bone brings back the Tzenkethi, and despite them being actual alien dinosaurs, they're somehow one of the most boring races we've encountered. Added to that we have confusing storytelling and motivations that come out of nowhere, and the big action chapter is so poorly drawn and written it's almost impossible to work out who's who and what's going on - and even harder to care.

Even though it's still an all-star crew of Star Trek characters, this is very much the Benjamin Sisko show. The crew of the Theseus gets stuck in the middle of this new race descended from dinosaurs and the Romulans. It all feels very cookie cutter Star Trek for the most part though. Like most things from Kelly and Lanzing, it's just OK.

-1 star from the rating because IDW has inexplicably stopped collecting these issues in hardback, switching midstream to paperback only.

Dinosaur-like Tzenkethi, Lieutenant Harry Kim, and backstabbing Romulans... it's a Star Trek adventure unlike anything I've ever read before. B-)

Had heard of Harry’s promotion in the Firewall novel, but it was cool to actually see him present here and how he’s changed as a person. Mixed feelings about his reasoning when it came to bringing Miral along.

Too silly of an interlude between the Red Path and whatever comes next.
Plus, they tried to make Harry Kim cool.

Some nice artwork, but overall sort of average. Starfleet vs Dinosaurs. Yay, miltary Trek, I guess.
