To fall in love and give your all - for Smoke Coalman there is no question of the lengths he’d go through to see his girlfriend Embry Foster live out her happiest and healthiest days. Embry’s kidneys, however, missed the memo. Two transplants and still a failing organ, options appear bleak. Dialysis takes its toll and the family has all been tested to no avail. For Smoke, though, losing is not an option, especially when it comes to the woman he loves. If nothing else, he has the will, but will it be enough to find a way?
“You know I’d do anything for you or die trying, right?”
From the moment Smoke and Embry were introduced in the Breadcrumbs series I knew they would capture my heart. They were the most unproblematic laid back couple of the bunch and stayed out the way loving on each other. When Ashantay said that book 4 was the end I was devastated because I wanted more from these two and up until that point they played the background. Well she finally answered my prayers.
Smoke is a rising musician and Embry is almost at the finish line for her Pharmacist degree. They drink water, mind their business and love on each other. What else can you ask for in a couple. Well the book started off with a health scare after Embry, a two times transplant recipient, begins to have symptoms that align with her body rejecting yet another kidney.
They say when it rains it pours and for these two they are in a category 5 hurricane. Embry is back on the transplant list, in and out of the hospital and back on dialysis. To make matters worse, since all of her family and friends have already been tested, she’s worried that time will run out before she reaches the top of the donor list.
If you’ve ever had to wonder the sacrifices true love is willing to make, this heartfelt story will remove all doubt.
I really enjoyed this book and catching up with the Black family. They have multiplied with all of the women and babies and it’s always a good time when they link up even when the reason why is bleak.
This was a nice way to end the series and I can finally say goodbye to them without feeling incomplete!
Now ma’am, you know I love the Coalman brothers. So, when I saw Smoke had a book I jumped right on it, but did you have to just immediately disrupt my tear ducts? I mean really sis. 😥 That prologue had me on the edge of my seat, with my heart beating double time, hoping for a promising outcome.
Then as we learn the history of what Embry has had to endure with her kidneys failing her, my heart squeezed a bit more, as it continued to break for her. 💔
However, Smoke is right by her side and will move heaven and earth if he can get her a kidney. His love for her is apparent, and I could feel his helplessness with every episode as Embry got sicker. He had to do something; he just didn’t know what.
Embry just wants to be healthy and live a normal life with Smoke. She hates being hospitalized and more than that, feeling like a burden to her friends. She is trying her darndest to stay hopeful, but she is getting weary.
I loved Junie and his relationship with his baby brother. He’s ready to knock heads off for him one minute and lifting his hands and praying over him the next. Junie allows him to be vulnerable when he needs to as this situation is tough for all involved. When Smoke finds a way to help Embry, he jumps at the opportunity no questions asked. Swooning….😍😍
You really did your thing with this one Ashantay. Loved how you brought awareness to kidney health and taught us a few things along the way. Great job!! 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
I really enjoyed this story. I love reading love stories about imperfect people. These 2 young souls were so sweet and their love was pure. I think baby boy might be my favorite Coalman brother. Aziz is still Aziz'ing, I see🙄 with his perpetually grumpy self. Very sweet, quick read.
Smoke was more than an ember, he was a flame. Embry was the spark to this man's whole heart. It was nice to see this couple have an amazing story with a strong focus on family and their happy ending. I approve of this edition in the Breadcrumbs series.
I wanted to write and thank you for writing this book. This is my life. I gave my husband a kidney 6 years ago. This book was awesome and shows we should all put ourselves out there to be a donor if we can. This is the greatest love. I love this book. Great job!!!!
This was a beautiful love story filled with determination, hope, love, and God's grace. I felt so bad for Embry, but smoke was not playing about her. I would definitely love an update on this family. 🥰
I knew Smoke would be just an amazing as the others. He knew exactly what he wanted and didn't half step while proving it. His brothers may have been worried but he had faith. Embry has her a good man!! Loved the reunion as well. She deserved that and more.
I loved this story. Pure, genuine love is what you get from Smoke and Embry. I liked how the story had an awareness of organ donation. Smoke showed just how much of a sacrifice he was willing to take for Embry. It's a very touching story with a beautiful ending.
The last Coalman brother really had my heart. The way he went above and beyond for Embry was so amazing. A man who really loves you will do whatever it takes and he did just that. I really enjoyed these men and their women.
Smoke was such a good man!!! I do wish we got more of they happily ever after being that Embry went through so much but nonetheless i enjoyed the story
I loved this story!! It raises awareness for organ donation. Im so happy Smoke was there thru it all!! I would love a story on how they're life is progressing!
I enjoyed the ending to this series and getting more from Embry and Smoke. He showed that love was unconditional and sometimes required sacrifice in what he did for Embry. That was an ultimate display of selfless love and I’m glad they were able to get their happy ending.
I thought Black was my favorite brother, Smoke quickly changed all of that. I love the way all the men loved their women differently but nothing and no one tops Smoke’s love for his woman!
WHEW!!! All i can say is love, faith, and commitment. I was here for all the smoke. This was a true commitment of what a relationship should have within to survive.
This ended on being a great series about 5 brothers with each book about each brother. Smoke, this one was a little tougher to read if you have or had anyone with kidney problems. But in the end, its always God's will.
This story definitely exemplified the true definition of when a young black male has positive examples in front of him!! Smoke was the strength that Embrey needed, that most men these days do not possess. In that strength Embrey was able to be that soft woman instead of guarded due to pass experiences!! I can’t wait for Plum and Josiah’s story!!
This entire series is definitely worth reading. This is such a great heartwarming love story that will pull at your heart strings. Smoke is such a gentleman and he loved Embry unconditionally.
Smoke and Embry truly love each other. This book tugs at your heartstrings. I found myself hoping throughout the entire book that everything would turn out well for these two. This is definitely a page-turner, in the best way possible. Unconditional love is what these two share. I would recommend this series.
Smoke was a solid read, and I’m not mad at how it wrapped up the series. The story kept me engaged, and the characters were consistent, but I’m content with how it all ended. It’s a satisfying conclusion that ties everything up nicely.

These Coalman men are softening in a good way! The way they love their woman and the lengths they will go for them! Even though that oldest Aziz is not my favorite, he did make it right in the long run! Again these Coalman men!
Just like the rest Smoke played no games when it came to Embry. This man did the unthinkable and let me this man was no joke. The author touched on something that many are going through everyday - kidney failure and dialysis. This condition is real and heavy in the world today. Not everyone is lucky or fortunate enough to get a donor.
Our girl Em been dealing with kidney failure since a young age, she’s had 2 transplants. One of those transplants/donors was Denim son Hansel and that’s how she and Denim became friends. So with needing another, my girl was lost and unsure. Oh but her man Smoke refused to give up or for her to continue to suffer. This man was willing to do anything to help her do and get better. When I say this man went above and beyond, he did just that. This man stood by her side from the beginning. The hospital became his new place of residence. This man was there for her father and this man wasn’t in her life due to life choices and addiction. This godly man was heaven sent and I loved it from beginning to the end!
This entire series was beautiful. It was soft, loving, caring, real friendship, family and most important LOVE! The Coalman & Outlaw family created their own village and it was beautiful to see it develop! Queen Ashantay you did an amazing job with this series even though Aziz was mean - 🤣🤣!
Smoke was a beautiful read. He is such a gentle and loving soul. I loved how he loved Embry and how he was willing to do anything for her to make sure she was okay. I loved how all the characters were there for them through the entire ordeal, and I honestly understand where Aziz was coming from when he was mad that Smoke wanted to donate a kidney. I’m not mad at him at all, and I support his views a thousand percent. In the end, everything worked out, and everybody got their happy ending, so I love that. This was a beautiful read with a slight whimsical tone. Kudos, Ashantay.
Ahh! The last of the bread crumbs series! I have really enjoyed everyone of the Coalman’s brothers stories! Smoke was so honorable for doing this major thing for his girlfriend!! It was so profound and powerful! Embry was so fortunate to have a man like that in her life! However I do have to read the Coalman Holiday! Once last chance before I let the Coalman’s go!
Smoke got his girl Embry all the way together. Now that’s true, unfiltered, soulmate, tell death do us part type of time and love that Smoke has for Embry💯. Even though this was a short book, I was impressed at how these story came together, and literally left no breadcrumbs.
Such a good series , I’m not sure who my favorite brother is ! But the fact that Smoke depended on God so much spoke volumes to me. I want that kind of love !
I hate that this series has came to an end but this quick read was everything. Smoke is the realest one he and Junie are my two favorite coalmans and both are book baes. I hope there will be more of them in the future
I enjoy the breadcrumb , series. I think my favorite brother still Junie. I’m so happy that smoke got a story. All of the brothers are very selfless and God-fearing man.
