A second chance with the single dad might seem like fate—but he’s exactly what I should avoid.

I’ve loved Ethan Bishop since freshman year— the day we met at a high school basketball game. Those five years together? Unforgettable. He was my first love, my one and only. But while I was wild at heart, his presence kept me grounded—until his family decided I wasn’t good enough for him.

My life unraveled the day he walked away, chasing his dreams while I took a detour to rehabilitation. It’s been twelve years, and I’ve pieced my life back together. I’ve moved on. Or so I thought. Then I run into him at a venue where I’m performing. That dimpled smile? It still sends my heart into a frenzy, stirring up feelings I thought I’d buried deep.

And our story? It’s far from over. I’ve just moved to Meadowbrook—the small town Ethan calls home. He’s a widower now, a devoted dad and the town’s beloved pastor. When he asks me to teach piano lessons to his kids, saying no isn’t even an option. Soon, the lines between us blur, as old feelings crash back as if no time has passed at all.

But the whispers and side-eyes in church are all too familiar. I wasn’t good enough for Ethan then. What makes me think I am now? As old wounds resurface, I have to wonder—will Ethan stay with me this time, or are we destined to be torn apart once more?
This is book 2 in The Single Dads of Meadowbrook Series. Each one of these Christian Romances can be read as a complete Standalone.
This story touches on themes of anxiety, depression and self harm leading toward hope, healing and redemption.

Wow, what a second chance romance!

The way Ruby and Ethan reconnect was honestly a bit comical at first, no spoilers, but clearly it caught Ethan by surprise.

These two were in love a long time ago, but Ethan broke Ruby’s heart, and neither of them walked away without scars. So when they unexpectedly run into each other years later, it’s a complete shock. The feelings come rushing back , but while Ethan is ready to fight for a second chance, Ruby is still carrying the weight of the heartbreak that literally changed her life.

Back then, she didn’t feel good enough for him… and now? It’s even harder. Ethan is a single dad and a pastor. Ruby is still battling her past and struggling with deep feelings of inadequacy. Can he convince her that their love is worth the risk and that she is worthy of being loved?

This one was definitely a tearjerker. It's not just a romance, it's a battle...a fight for healing, for grace, and for the future they could have together. But it’s not easy. Ruby and Ethan also face judgment from others who aren’t willing to look past her history.

Content warning: This book deals with some heavy topics including self harm, anxiety, depression, and mentions of death and suicide. It’s emotionally intense at times, so sensitive readers might want to keep that in mind.

All in all, this was a powerful and emotional read...deeper and heavier than my usual picks, but well worth it!

Can’t wait to dive into Liam and Willow’s story next!

I gave this 4.5 stars, rounded to 5 stars!

I received a complimentary copy, this review reflects my honest opinion.

Stay With Me by Rose Fresquez is the second book in her Single Dads of Meadowbrook series. The books follow a group of single men raising children who form a “found family” and their forays into love. For readers new to Ms. Fresquez her books give readers a glimpse into loving, passionate relationships based on the tenets of striving for Godly living. Ethan is the much-loved leader of a faithful folk of believers; he appears to be doing everything right, he is an awesome pastor, a loyal friend, and a nurturing father to his two young children. However, Ethan is not without regret; he allowed himself to be coerced into a loveless marriage by his strict parents, while judgmentally walking away from the love of his life. When Ethan unexpectedly encounters Ruby in Meadowbrook, he is ecstatic and convinced that God has given him another chance at true love. In the years since Ethan pushed her away and broke her heart, Ruby has struggled in every way possible, emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually. How can she place her trust, her hope, her heart back in the hands of the man who broke her so completely? But then again, how can she not? Ruby is aware that she does not fit the mold of what a preacher’s wife should be, even less now after her years of struggle. Ethan’s parents will never accept her and his church is sure to rebel when they learn of her past and her problems. It is better to just walk away now! Ms. Fresquez tackles some somber issues with a deft touch without using platitudes or oversimplification. Ruby IS a bit of a mess, true work in progress and readers are allowed to tag along as she puts in the work needed for restoration. While Ethan was very young when he allowed outside forces to disrupt his relationship with Ruby, I think he had a rather easy road to reconciliation, he needed to grovel a bit more 😊. This book is a stellar second-chance at love, opposites attract love story told with realism and a gentle reminder that faith and devotion work best when put into action!.

Memories May Be Good but a Future Would Be Better

At the very beginning of the book, you know Ethan is full of remorse. The way he dumped Ruby never left his mind… nor his heart, and that was 12 years ago. He found — and lost — his one and only. Or should I say, he tossed her aside.

Ethan may be a pastor now but even pastors have their regrets. He always was a do-gooder and listened to his very judgmental and legalistic parents. With his dad being a pastor, Ethan seldom felt free to make his own choices … UNTIL he met a somewhat impulsive Ruby when they were only 14. They became best friends and later fell in love.

Ruby never really had a home life growing up with an abusive alcoholic father. Ethan was her everything … until he wasn’t.

His legalistic parents didn’t approve of Ruby… at all. To them she dressed sinfully and she was not up to Ethan’s caliber. They made that known publicly and preacher dad even delivered sermon’s about people wearing those sinful ripped jeans. Sooo, when Ethan’s brother lied about Ruby, Ethan broke up with her and ghosted her, pleasing his parents. Maybe I should say hypocritical parents as they certainly didn’t practice what they preached.

To say Ruby was devastated is putting it lightly. The day Ethan left her, Ruby’s mom died. Without saying specifics, just know Ruby’s life spirals downhill and it takes years for her to once more get a grip on life. After all, Ethan had been her life support, showing her what a real home was meant to be.

When they meet again several years later it may seem rather comical, but don’t let that fool you. The road to Ethan and Ruby getting a happy ever after is a mountainous climb with a lot of curves. Be prepared for a heart wrenching, tissue worthy read.

🤔OBSERVATIONS:

... Ethan’s marriage seemed to be one of convenience… he and his deceased wife may have loved each other but they were not ‘in love’ with each other.

... I so wanted his parents to get some scripture quoted to them… about judging others and reaping what you sow. They both needed a ‘church correction’. Their simple I’m Sorry was pathetic. They played a big role in Ethan’s choices … bad choices not good choices, which led to harmful collateral damage.

... Ethan’s brother is complicated… I felt he and the parents played a BIG role in Ruby’s downfall. However, he owned up early to his deceitfulness and was truly regretful.

After scanning through a selection of books to review for the week, I stopped scrolling
after reading the synopsis for the romance novel called Stay with Me by Rose Fresquez.

With such an intriguing synopsis, I was itching to read it.

The story is about two young lovers reuniting, twelve years after being forced to break up because of
meddling over-the-top religious family members.

What Romance reader could resist a trope like that?

In the first few chapters, the author does an outstanding job creating angst between the two-ex
lovers right off the bat. By chance, or fate, these lovers end up living in the same small town.
As soon as they laid eyes on each other after twelve years of separation, sparks flew faster than a
plane taking off on a runway.

As the story unfolds, the reader discovers what pried these soul-mates apart. At this point, you
would have to be a die-hard Scrooge fan not to root for this pair.

Twelve years earlier, Ruby, the female protagonist, tumbles into a downward spiral after her abrupt breakup with the love of her life, Ethan.

On the flip side, Ethan’s life changed for the better, or so it seemed. He devoted his life to God,
got married and fathered two children.

But he wasn’t completely happy. He loved Ruby and longed for her even though it appeared he
moved on.

This is a clean Christian romance. There are no sex scenes or cursing, but kissing and flirting are definitely on the agenda.

The writer ‘s coherent and smooth style brings authenticity to her characters, which
makes them relatable.

The swiftness with which Ethan’s two young children meet and take to Ruby immediately rang
true. In real life, some children are open-minded and accepting of others.

The biggest flaw I found in this otherwise interesting plot is that the author took too long to get the story out.

At the mid-point, the story dragged, right after the characters reunited. There was no longer any
angst or fighting for this couple to get together, which had built up during the first few chapters.

The characters settled with each other like an old married couple too soon.

If the writer had created more obstacles or angst throughout the story, instead of near the end of the story, I feel it would have been a better read.

Overall, the author did an okay job with this story. If you like a clean romance without a lot of
tug of war, I think you will enjoy this one.

This contemporary second-chance Christian single dad romance is page-turning with exceptional world-building in Meadowbrook and characters. Their journey is enthralling and tenderhearted,,, with a stay with me, the small town of Meadowbrook, a single dad, chaos/drama, anxiety, depression, self-harm leading toward hope, healing, and redemption, heartfelt emotions/emotional depth, action, adventure, and more. I recommend reading this book by an extraordinary author who knows how to captivate her readers' hearts and attention with stay with me and a contemporary second chance Christian romance that is sure to transport readers into a world that is wildly entertaining, emotional, and unforgettable.

Stay With Me has some deep and powerful moments that will hit you in the gut when you least expect it. There was one sermon scene in particular that I found myself hearing a whisper from the Lord as I read it. As the scene ended, I had to pause and put the book down as tears stung my eyes. Yes, it hit that hard. This story took quite an unexpected turn near the end that hurt my heart, but it also highlighted the beauty that is Ethan and Ruby’s resilience against hardship and the power of love and made the ending all the more powerful.

Ethan and his kids are so charming and brought light and buoyancy to an otherwise heavier read. The scenes where they’re all together as a family are so heartwarming and gave me this warm sense of calm right along with Ruby. The first night where the family puts on a concert was one of my favorite moments and showed just how perfectly they all fit together.

I saw myself in this book, particularly with Ruby’s story and her personal struggles, and felt a stirring in my soul as I read. While I overall enjoyed the novel, I struggled with this title more than I have with any other Rose Fresquez novels to date. Maybe I wasn’t in the right frame of mind to read this type of story, which is very true to life and does hit on some darker subject matter, which I had not originally anticipated, and I am a mood reader. That’s not to say that it is entirely heavy because it’s not. There are some charming moments intertwined with more thought-provoking scenes, the small-town charm is present and glimmering, and the ending was perfect and made the whole journey worth it.

Stay With Me is not the story I was expecting, but it was powerful nonetheless and will stick with me long after I read it.

*I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I received from the author/publisher. All views and opinions expressed are completely honest, and my own.

Ethan and Ruby are best friends growing up and just when that friendship blossomed into more, it all fell apart. 12 years later Ethan is a pastor, a widow and a single dad to a young daughter. He never expects to see Ruby again but life has a way of surprising us.

Their re-meeting was more than cute… it was hilarious. I could picture it so vividly and caught myself laughing at Ethan.

There are definitely lighthearted and fun moments in this book, but there are also heavy ones. Ruby’s life growing up and since her break with Ethan is one filled with tragedy and turmoil. And while not as awful, Ethan’s has included some harsh doses of reality.

Ethan’s family is also a lot to handle. His father is also a pastor. A very legalistic and pharisaical one and his mother embraces the same views. They are cruel to Ruby.. judgmental and pious. I confess I could never bring myself to like them and their “apology” was weak and did not feel genuine. Ethan’s brother also plays a large role in their story and it is easy to dislike him.. at first. But he is genuinely repentant and strives to help them reunite.

Watching these 2 find their way back to each other and find healing from so much pain was beautiful.

I want to add that there is an issue in the story that may be a trigger for some. It is something I have personally dealt with and I commend Rose on how well she handled it. It was accurate and genuine. It is the issue of severe anxiety and panic attacks. I am not talking normal nervousness. I am talking about debilitating moments where you feel you are about to die as the fear grips you with a death vise. If you’ve never experienced that feeling, be thankful.

Other issues that are part of the story include death, grief, suicide, addiction, and depression. This is another a story that sugar coats real life pain, but let me add that for all the heaviness there is much more grace and forgiveness and love.

Truly a beautiful read.

Loved Ethan and Ruby's story!! Ruby has loved Ethan since she met him at fourteen. In fact, she told him when they met that she would be his wife one day. Ethan loved Ruby, too. However, Ethan's parents didn't like Ruby, she didn't fit into the plans they had for Ethan. When an incident occurred with Ethan's brother, Harvey, things fell apart, and Ethan broke things off without knowing the truth. Now, Ruby has moved to Meadowbrook, having no idea that Ethan and his children live there. Ruby isn't looking for a second chance with Ethan. After twelve years, during which she spiraled out of control, she's finally getting her life together again, and finding anyone is not in her plans. Ethan's been praying for Ruby all these years, and now that he knows she's in Meadowbrook, he wants a second chance. Now, if he can just convince her that he knows he made a huge mistake letting her go, that he knows she's the only woman he'll ever love, and that he truly wants her by his side, no matter what anyone else says or thinks. I love how both rely on God to help them maneuver through all that life throws at them, and both know God is in control.

I give this 4 1/2 Stars!

I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is a Christian romance book and part of the Single Dads of Meadowbrook series. The main characters are Ethan and Ruby. Ethan and Ruby were high school sweethearts until they went their separate ways. Time has gone by Ethan is a widower, pastor, and a single dad while Ruby is getting her life back together. They end up reconnecting when Ruby moves to Meadowbrook. Will this be their second chance? The more time they spend together the more they fall back in love. Unfortunately, Ethan broke Ruby’s heart once and Ruby doesn’t think she will ever be good enough. Can Ethan prove her wrong? Will Ruby risk it and open her heart to Ethan? I loved Ethan and Ruby together. Ruby went through so much in life but came out stronger. I was so frustrated with Ethan’s family. I loved Ethan’s kids and loved seeing how great Ruby was to them. I loved the side characters. This is one of those books that I believe goes to show God has a plan for your life. Everything happens for a reason if you don’t understand. Give it all to God and let Him take the lead. Overall, I enjoyed this book a lot. If you like second chance, Christian romance, and a single dad then you may like this book.

This is a Christian romance novel. It is a long book, but well worth the read. TW: It does deal with suicide.

Ethan is a pastor and was raised in a Christian family. His father is a pastor as well, but way more strict than Ethan is. When he was a teenager, he met Ruby and they dated. But due to family stress, they broke up. He eventually remarried and had kids. However, now he is a widower. Ruby has not seen him for a long time, but she goes to play piano and sing at the Skyview Center and runs into him. She has been struggling since they broke up. He is still in love with her. Can they work it out?

This was a very good book. It was very deep at times. It talks about walking with Christ and how everyone of us is a sinner and how we can work through things in life. I enjoyed the quoting of scripture. Because the book is longer than ones I usually read, it did take me a few days, but I really enjoyed it. At the end there is a 31 day devotional, which I appreciated. A definite must read.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Stay With Me is a raw, real, and deeply emotional story of faith, forgiveness, and finding hope after devastating loss. Twelve years after their first love fell apart, she’s back in Meadowbrook - the small town Ethan Bishop calls home. Now a widowed pastor and devoted dad, Ethan never expected to see her again, much less invite her into his life to teach piano lessons to his children. What begins as a cautious reconnection becomes a heartfelt journey through love, grief, and the healing power of grace.

This story doesn’t shy away from the hard stuff: anxiety, panic attacks, addiction, depression, and the ache of grief but it handles each theme with honesty, compassion, and hope. I loved how authentic it felt, showing that faith isn’t about perfection but perseverance through the darkest moments. It’s tender, redemptive, beautifully written, and a reminder that even broken hearts can find light again.

“Sometimes God’s masterpieces really are born out of the most broken places.” This quote from the book in chapter 33 highlights one of the beautiful themes of this book, a masterpiece in and of itself, that God gives second chances over and over even from the brokenness of our lives. In this beautiful story of a single dad (Ethan) having lost the love of his life due to misunderstanding and then lost his wife is given a second chance at love with the one who got away (Ruby). Ruby is such a beautiful example of us humans as sinners who can’t seem to get it right and feel judged by others, but find freedom, acceptance, healing and love when we step into the light of Gods love. I couldn’t help but see the title in both Ethan and Rubys relationship but also in our relationship with God. He longs to dwell in our hearts and He is always near. It is us that stray.

This was an emotional story involving Ethan, a widowed pastor with two cute children and Ruby, a singer and a piano teacher. Ruby and Ethan had a past twelve years ago but their future never came to be because of his parents and his brother. Now they are given a second chance when Ruby moves to Meadowbrook and they bump into each other. They are given a chance to overcome their emotional, complicated past, a chance to heal, a chance to forgive, and a chance to have it all in God's perfect timing for them.
I enjoyed reading to see how everything would turn out. I also liked the 31 day devotional at the end of the book. I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

Stay With Me is an awesome, second chance romance. Ruby's live since Ethan walked away has not been easy, but Ethan's life wasn't perfect either. Ethan's family, particularly his father is judgemental and overly concerned with appearances. Ethan's father represents all I abhor in a preacher. He should have been removed from the ministry. Between Ethan's parents and his brother, the young couple never stood a chance. While I felt the brother's apology was sincere, his parents' apology was insufficient and grudgingly given. There are many loving and romantic moments for Ethan and Ruby, but there is also a lot of angst. Ethan has to work hard to convince Ruby that she is more than enough. I always find Ms. Fresquez's books moving. This one does not disappoint.

This is a sweet Christian contemporary romance. Our single dad widower Ethan is a pastor. Our piano teacher heroine Ruby just moved to town. When they reconnect after 12 years apart, sparks fly. Ruby has a history with depression and addiction and has troubles with her self worth. Ethan’s family pushed them apart when they were in high school and are not thrilled that they’ve reconnected. This novel navigates many things in a well thought out, thorough, and Biblical manner. I’m looking forward to more in this series. This is a just kisses romance, intimacy level 2.5. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.

Ethan and Ruby were high school sweethearts until his parents drove them apart. Years later they meet again and slowly become friends again.
Ruby has feelings of insecurity believing she will never be good enough or measure up to other people's expectations. Ethan is a widower with two young children.
Can they overcome the pain of the past to start over again? Ethan's children are sure hoping Ruby can become their mother.
How they overcame their hurts from the past took time and patience. I was glad their friendship was not rushed or their past pain trivialized. I thought this was a sweet story of second chances.

This novel is definitely a heavier story of heartache, broken dreams, physical struggles, emotional unrest. It is a good story in that it points us to the source of healing for the struggles and heart: Jesus.

Ethan has fulfilled his dream of being a pastor but lost his zest for life along the way. Ruby nearly lost herself along the way, but God is putting the pieces back together. Together they are stronger but must face prejudices, misunderstanding, and inner fears to come out where God has planned for them.

This was a beautiful story of redemption after heartbreak, grief, loss, and addiction as well as depression and anxiety. Despite all the heavy themes of the book, Rose Fresquez wove them into a tapestry of God's grace, forgiveness, mercy, and love. I loved how Ethan stood up to his family and those in his congregation who wanted to shame him for his relationship with Ruby. The topics of church hurt that were covered and those who can be too judgmental instead of showing love and grace were also relevant. Ethan and Ruby both grapple with past hurts, traumas, and lies to come together and find love with each other at last. Thank you to the author for my ARC; all opinions are mine.

This is a touching, emotional journey for the characters. Ruby and Ethan dated in high school. He was raised by a Pastor, and she had a difficult home life, so his parents didn’t approve of them dating. When they meet up years later in a new town the surprise for both of them was priceless. He has 2 kids, and she is a piano teacher so to get back in her good grace he asks her to teach his kids. Ethan is the Pastor and so there is a lot of judgement that they had to go through, I enjoyed seeing their growth, the relationship between Ethan’s kids and Ruby, overall, a beautiful story.

Stay With Me is a sweet, inspirational second chance romance. As a young adult, Ethan broke up with Ruby due to a misunderstanding and family pressure. Many years later, their paths cross again and their feelings have not lost any of their intensity, but there are many obstacles to overcome to reach their happily ever after. Rose Fresquez has written a story that could be anyone’s story, with relatable characters and very real struggles. I haven’t read very many books by this author, but I am hooked and will definitely be reading more by Rose Fresquez.

Ethan and Ruby were high school sweethearts till he broke up with her 12 years ago. Now, Ethan is a widower, working as a pastor in Meadowbrook.

Due to their past, Ruby has to learn to trust Ethan again while Ethan has to learn from his mistakes, and earn the right to be with her again. Their journey together was not a smooth one and I definitely shed lots of tears as I journeyed with them.

This was an amazing second chance romance, which reminded me again of how God can use our brokenness, even in our moments of doubt and fear.

WOW!!! I’m not sure what even to say. This book far exceeded any expectations I had. It is so gripping and powerful in both it’s story and it’s message. The characters are all strong in their major and supporting roles. With Ethan as the pastor, I would love to be part of his congregation, but then with the reactions of the congregation itself, not so much. This should be a lesson to us all not to be quick to judge, and to keep our opinions to ourselves. This is a true friend to lover, and a great second chance story. Have the tissues on hand as this is full of emotion and you’ll learn why it’s titled Stay With Me. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Stay With Me.

This is a well written book with good character development. It was great to see how Ruby grew in her relationship with God and was so forgiving of Ethan and quick to give him a second chance. She was amazing with his children. It is a sweet second change romance. A few times some things seemed a bit unrealistic, but it was an enjoyable book.

The Best second chance

This is one of the best second chance love stories I’ve read in quite some time. The story of redemption and Gods love was weaved beautifully together. I adored both Ethan and Ruby. They are both very relatable and transparent voicing the struggles and thoughts many of us have. I enjoying this series can’t wait for the next story!

Thank you , Ms Fresquez. Another beautifully written story. So much depth to the characters and their struggles. But God…. When we turn to Him, we can see healing and growth. That is exactly what I saw in Ruby and Ethan. Love this series of single dads. Can’t wait to see what you have planned for Willow.

I didn't expect this to be a faith centred romance as such I had to make a mental adjustment. I didn't look at Goodreads reviews or anything. The romance was interesting enough, though at times too simplistic. That might be the writing style to. I skim read through those parts when, at points, it seemed to be idling.

In this book you’ll read about second chances and and the special bond between friends. When Ruby comes back to stay with Willow she is surprised when she sees Ethan. Ethan is busy raising his two children alone and his duty’s with his church. Watching these two become friends again will have you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.

What a beautiful story filled with love, headache, pain and the sweetest kid ever. Sometimes we really do get a second chance at love. This couple has a beautiful story to tell. There story is filled with much pain and suffering, but God with His grace has pulled them through. Don't miss they're journey through this book.if
