Marriage of convenience, yes please!
This was an interesting take on a marriage of convenience, not for the reason why it was needed, but the process. I thoroughly enjoyed that the characters sought God's will in the whole matter and were focused on following Him and not listening to those who could've dissuaded them. I also like seeing ties to the world Latisha Sexton has created with her characters. This is one you'll want to add to your tbr pile.

Sigh. What do you do when you always feel like second best? When you feel like a back-up plan? When you never feel seen? But then when your husband who has married you for convenience sake finally sees you?

This story ripped my heart out a time or two. It also made me laugh. When our oldest girls were babies, we had a neighbor who lived across the road from us. She came over to visit one day and was sitting on our porch. All of a sudden she said, "You can't see into our house from here nearly as well as we can see into yours. You should get some binoculars." After that, our curtains were closed promptly at dusk each evening. 😂 Bram's neighbor reminded me of Mae.

I love this book.

I'm not giving this a star rating because I feel torn. On one hand, I enjoyed this story and it fulfilled my craving for a marriage-of-convenience story (which I often don't give into because there are so few worth reading.

I loved the characters, and I appreciated how upfront they were with each other and with many people in their lives.

So, what is keeping me from giving a glowing five stars?

I adored the faith element early in the story. Yet, as the romance heated up, the faith aspect faded. It wasn't gone, but I was hoping for more.

There was a lot of awkward noticing of each other. I am a married woman but I still found myself bothered with how much ogging was done. I felt like we started with such wonderful people of character and at points, they were reduced to a hot body. However, I did feel the author drew some very good, healthy lines in both her descriptions as well as with her character's own conscience. So, again I'm conflicted.

I will end with I did like how both characters go for godly advice when things are going wrong and then they follow that advice. That was a refreshing change.

I hate it when I feel so conflicted about a book.

This has become one of my favorite marriage of convenience stories ever! It’s my fav trope and Latisha wrote it so beautifully with Bram and Quinn. Words can’t describe how incredible this story is!

I don’t know when I’ve loved two characters more! Bram and Quinn found a place in my heart and nestled in. And I don’t see them leaving anytime soon.

Bram!! Bram just melted my heart with how sweet and attentive he was to Quinn. I was a puddle, yall! Quinn was adorable and so caring. Her heart was so big and full of love for others.

It’s hard to do a modern MOC, but somehow Latisha did it to perfection! I love how she wove that God’s ways are better than ours. How He knows best when we don’t. How He sees things in the future we can’t. How he surprises us with sweet gifts of love that we weren’t expecting.

I don’t want to give away anything more. You just need to experience this book and savor every word and chapter to its fullest. Your heart will be so happy!

Also, if you read the Denver Dragons Series, you will be glad to see Cyrus again!! I need his HEA so badly!!

Love can bloom from the most unlikely of places.

This was my first real Marriage of Convenience book and I enjoyed every second of this. The author has officially set the bar for me on this trope and it’s pretty high on up. If it’s not done well as it was here in this book, I don’t want it!

How do you tell your eighty-year-old widowed neighbor with no family around to stop baking you delicious pies and leaving them on your kitchen counter when you’re at work? You don’t.

The not-entirely-creepy-sweet-old-lady, Mrs. Graham, is a fan favorite for sure. You gotta trust me on this one and go see for yourself. 🤣

Ahh, I can’t remember the last time a book had me swooning so much! I think at one point I might’ve actually been blushing on behalf of these characters. 🥰

I am forever a fan of Latisha Sexton’s books! I need to go back and read her hockey books so I’m all caught for whatever she has next in store. IYKYK 👀 ❤️🙏🏼

Modern marriage of convenience story that did a good job showcasing the tendency to make getting married about being in love vs obedience to God. Bram and Quinn receive various reactions, many negative or incredulous, to their decision to wed for practical reasons. But they are both stable adults who have jobs, they have known each other for years, and they even go to the same church. Why can’t the feelings of love grow after the wedding as easily as before? In their case, this definitely happens, and when they hit rough spots, the foundation of their faith and their friendship helps them through. While the book is a light, fast read sure to delight contemporary Christian romance readers, it did have me thinking about how our society and even believers have lost so much context of God’s intention for marriage by our obsession with our feelings.

Sweet, swoony and full of faith! Just how I like my contemporary romances. Sexton crafted a modern day marriage of convenience that is totally believable with characters that stay with you long after you’ve finished the novel- whether you love them or loath them.

This is one I’ll be reading again if not for anything but one word- “stay.” Siggghhhhhh. This whole book is just- chef’s kiss!

Sigh... marriage of convenience is my favorite trope so I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it missed the mark for me. It's also marketed as a romcom (from Amazon: *Bram Baxter Marries the Wrong Sister is a sweet, Christian romantic comedy) but I found the com part lacking. There were parts that I liked, don't get me wrong. And did I chuckle once or twice? Sure... But there were some major points that just didn't work for me.
1. Bram is in love with one woman and offers to marry another. Marriage of convenience or not... this was an issue for me, especially when that woman is his wife's sister. And he never told the one he married. Even when she asks if he has ever loved someone...
2. Which brings me to point two... the night of their wedding, Bram kisses Quinn... and for a "brief micro-second" sees Lois instead. Um no... I don't care how long it was... This is why #1 shouldn't have happened. And you can say "God told him to marry her" all you want... The boy had some stuff he should have worked through before ever committing to another woman. I cringed. And honestly, I nearly DNFed the book at this point.
3. But I didn't DNF it and regretted it because >> Bram sleeps with Quinn without her knowing that he's still fighting to get over his love for Lois. Why was this ok??? NO, just no. He was not emotionally ready for this escalation in their relationship.
4. Quinn finds out about his love for Lois and in the same day, just completely forgives him AND Lois (for other things... but seriously - she's harbored guilt and anger for years and in one day she just forgives - it rang false to me and was just too easy, but when you're past 90% of the book, there's no time to do this justice)
5. There was a lot of drama in this book - so much drama that I couldn't laugh it off. You have a heroine who nearly dies from type 1 diabetes and who is then trying to maintain her health, foster kids (one of whom is reunited with her family which is good, but it's a heartbreaking ordeal for the heroine), a family still grieving the loss of a father/husband (and not well I might add), a family hurting over the fact that one sister met and eloped with a man she never told her family even existed... I like a good dramatic book - but don't try to pass it off as a romcom.
6. There was so much time spent on both of them wanting to kiss the other, but not actually kissing each other. After I while I was just like "kiss or don't kiss... just get on with it"
7. They were supposed to be seeing the Pastor for monthly counseling and we never actually saw any of it on the page. Ok... don't show it, but to only mention it once? And then when it was mentioned that one time... yeah, it was about how they were lying to the Pastor. Both of these characters believed that God wanted them to marry and both were willing to learn to love the other and yet they lie to the Pastor in counseling? That to me just reeks of two immature people unwilling to do the hard work necessary for any of this to work

What I liked:
1. Bram sees more of Quinn than anyone else - her sacrifice in the service of others in particular
2. Cyrus and Titus (Bram's brothers) giving him the business for not telling Quinn and threatening bodily harm for hurting her
3. As much as the old lady neighbor needed boundaries, I did love the wisdom she shared

Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ & 123 (4.5, rounded up to 5)
Read: October 2024

Series: The Wrong Girl, #1
Format: Kindle e-Book
Challenge Prompt: CNL’s #41 of 50 - “includes sisters”

Book #103 of 2024: This book was just what I needed as a pick-me-up and it didn’t disappoint! I enjoyed the Jones and Baxter families and their years and years of established bonds. I smiled, I laughed, I agonized in sympathy, and I definitely swooned. Sometimes romcoms can be just fluff and fun —and that’s okay—but I truly appreciate when there are underlying nuggets that contain more than meets the eye. This is one of those romcoms.

While I’m not one for marriages of convenience, these two had a history of many years of friendship. They weren’t strangers by any stretch so they had a huge “leg-up.” As noble as it was for Bram, his feelings toward Lois should have been an upfront item. His idea of marriage screamed of rebounding or just taking the “leftovers” when the prime rib wasn’t available. (I realize that it makes for a more intriguing storyline and reflects our probable human nature however.) Regardless, I was happy to see that Bram spent time in prayer, reading Scripture, and asking for his Dad’s counsel. His Dad’s advice about marriage/commitment being a CHOICE was something we rarely read about outside of Christian fiction. Quinn also spent time in prayer and seeking an answer.

Something I really appreciated about this novel is that we see the stark difference between what we PERCEIVE as being “in love” versus the depth and breadth of a foundation of friendship, respect, trust, AND attraction. They are very different. One is on a rather conditional and emotional foundation relegated to “feelings. The other is so very much more and posses growth. Again, it’s a choice. The world is full of break-ups and divorces because they were built on shaky foundations. Deep down both Bram and Quinn knew they would honour their commitments or they wouldn’t have gone through with it. That speaks volumes of the strength between them. They are both strong cornerstones and caretakers of their respective families. Often what we THINK we want and what we truly NEED are vastly different. Bram and Quinn realized they fit together like puzzle pieces and they made far more sense.

A few other great aspects to this story were the health-related news, foster care, the sister conflict & resolution, personal struggles, and the prior loss of a parent. (I’m being vague on purpose for the health aspect as not to bring in a spoiler.) I appreciated that the story wasn’t simply about a couple’s marriage of convenience. Regular life was still happening and it all kept the story grounded.

This romcom was a huge change from the romantic suspense books that I’ve read and enjoyed by this author. She handles both well. I will certainly be continuing The Wrong Girl series!

WOW is the first word that comes to mind after finishing this! I’ve been waiting to read this book for a while now and it was so worth the wait!!!

The MMC’s faith in the Lord throughout the book and the FMC’s generous spirit created the perfect chemistry storm between the two! They had their own little roller coaster throughout the book, and the ending? SWOON!

10/10 recommend picking up a copy of this book! I wish I could read it again for the first time!!! Latisha did such an amazing job!!

This Christian romcom has beautiful faith, tangible characters, and a toothless alligator. I mean, what more could I ask for???

Marriage of convenience is one of my favorite tropes and I loved seeing it done in a modern setting, especially with a lot of prayer and guidance from older Christians.

As for Bram and Quinn, I’ve never wanted a couple to kiss so badly 😂 I kept singing “just kiss the girl!” each time they were together. Them calling each other husband and wife was just *chef’s kiss* 🤌🏼🤌🏼🥺♥️ highly recommend if you love Bluey references, foster kid rep, diabetic rep, surfing dates/lessons, and swoony slow burns!

I devoured Bram Baxter Marries the Wrong Sister, book 1 of this new series by Latisha Sexton, in one afternoon. This marriage of convenience story between Bram and Quinn has secrets, tension and a strained relationship between Lois and Quinn, and Quinn being diagnosed with a health issue. This is a closed door romance and a Christian rom com that I would read again.

This is easily one of my favorite books that I have read this year. I love marriage of convenience stories and this one has some great situations that arose and needed to be resolved throughout the story.

I appreciated Bram and Quinn’s heart attitudes toward each other as they entered into this unlikely marriage. They knew they weren’t in love with each other and Quinn was concerned that they would have a loveless marriage. I liked that Bram assured her that their marriage wouldn’t be loveless because, as friends, they could grow in their determination to show love to each other throughout the years and grow in their connection. Yet, Quinn was not aware of the crush that Bram had carried for her sister, who recently married another man.

I loved that Bram was faithful and true to Quinn even as he battled his heart, which, especially at the beginning of the marriage, still felt a pull toward Quinn’s sister. Bram was so good at redirecting his thoughts and heart, yet it was something he struggled with.

It was beautiful to see these two growing closer in their marriage as time passed, however, they struggled with communication and confusion, at times second guessing how each other felt. I appreciated the faith message that was woven throughout the novel, too.

I loved this story and look forward to reading more books in this series.

Great Christian Marriage of Convenience Book! 👍🏻

This was such a different take on marriage of convenience that I loved it! Usually the characters rush in and get married in a quick wedding so that some goal can be achieved and there is a time that they will spend together before they get a divorce. But in this book, almost half of the book is spent before they are married, there is a very sweet (yet somewhat awkward) engagement scene, and the couple goes in knowing they are marrying for life even if they are not in love with each other.

Not only did I love how Latisha handled the marriage of convenience I also loved how she brought in the topic of how God’s will may not be exactly what we had pictured into the story. So many times as a Christian we ask God “Why?” (Or at least I do!) and don’t understand but when we follow God’s will we can see how Romans 8:28 can come to fruition in our lives.

Highly recommend this book! I was given an ARC of this book. All comments and reviews are my own.

I loved this book!! It is by a new author for me, too. This is a marriage of convenience story, and it is so sweet and swoony. As far as characters go, the hero, Bram, is my new book boyfriend, and the heroine, Quinn, is my new book bestie. I loved all the characters in the book. I'm excited because it looks like it will be a series, and I am so here for it!!

I’ve read quite a few Marriage of Convenience romances, and while I enjoy most of them, I usually have to suspend reality a little bit to really get into the story. Until I read Latisha Sexton’s newest release, Bram Baxter Marries the Wrong Sister. This book is the most realistic Marriage of Convenience I’ve ever read, from the reason for the marriage to the development of feelings and the struggles they encounter. Sexton breathed new life into the trope!

Bram is a Godly man, seeking the Lord first before making decisions. I love how he cares for those around him, Quinn included. I also enjoyed the scenes with his brothers and how protective they were of Quinn also. Their dynamic and dialogue felt absolutely believable.

I loved that I could see the entire book playing out in real life – it wasn’t far-fetched. But it still had humor, swoony romance and even better, the development of real love centered on Christ. I highly recommend Bram Baxter Marries the Wrong Sister and I can’t wait to read Cyrus’ story next!

I know I'm in the minority but I struggled reading about Bram and Quinn. I appreciated the faith elements but while Bram was supposedly spending all this time praying, he was continuing to hide the truth from Quinn. That seemed off to me. I also feel like if he had been honest about his past feelings toward Lois, his feelings toward Quinn now would have seemed more genuine. I mean he spent a good chunk of his life thinking he was in love with one sister only for it to all shift to the other in the course of a few months?? I just couldn't fully connect especially from Bram's side. I do appreciate the story being clean and since this is the start of a series, maybe I will engage better with one of the other brother's stories.

This is such a fantastic Christian contemporary romance! I love how Latisha handled the marriage of convenience trope.

I so appreciated the portrayal of seeking God’s will, taking a step of faith and choosing to trust Him even if what you feel you are being called to is hard and maybe not what you want at the moment.

⭐️ 3.5 stars ⭐️

This story was so sweet, and I loved how Christ centered a lot of it was. It was a super quick, easy read that I didn't want to put down.

We got to see the characters grow in character, and most importantly in dependence on God and trusting Him. Both of the main characters were likeable and I was rooting for them and for everything to work out...even if a lot of the time I wanted to smack them and tell them to just communicate clearly! The family vibes were also very strong throughout the book, which I enjoyed, as well as the foster care plotline that was so cute.

Now, I will say (and I saw this articluated well in another review also) that the faith element seemed to be a lot more prevelant in the first half of the book than in the second, although it never completely went away. The second half focused more on the romance and dynamics of figuring out married life, but it ended up being a lot of noticing how attractive the other person was most of the time, and it just seemed a bit much when comparing it to how squeaky clean and faith focused the first half was. I also felt that the conflict was resolved way too quickly at the end of the book, and it didn't seem believable to me.

Overall though, I enjoyed the story a lot, even if I would've preferred a couple things changed personally.

Content: semi-detailed kisses, some cuddling/hands on waists, shoulders, etc., light innuendos and we heard about a marriage being consummated and then discussed (no graphic detail given/closed door/fade to black), lots of noticing, almost kisses and thoughts of wanting to kiss, dealing with grief and loss of a loved one, dealing with an illness

A sweet with a little spice modern marriage of convenience story with a Christian foundation. At first, I wasn’t sure how the two of them would work out when Bram was still in love with her sister, but throughout the novel (and the revelation of several past events), both their hearts are slowly molded to see the beauty in the other person and realize how God can unexpectedly bring people together. I also really enjoyed all of the side characters. They each added something unique to the story and I especially liked the foster care storyline with Jovie. The only character I wasn’t totally sold on by the end was Mrs. Graham, the nosy neighbor. (Think Gladys Kravitz from Bewitched but if she started breaking into the Stephens’ house). Although she had some lovely words of wisdom, her inability to respect boundaries was just a little too much for me.
Overall, a good read and I’m looking forward to Cyrus’s story next.

Where heart & humour meet faith & family!

I’m a sucker for a good marriage of convenience, and I loved Latisha’s spin! Plus, the cross-overs to her Denver Dragons characters had me feeling all sorts of giddy, and I needed Cyrus & Titus’s stories yesterday, ma’am! 😍 Love those boys.

My heart was panicking a little at the end because I was running out of pages to get a resolution between Quinn & Bram. But we got it and it was beautiful! I just wanted more of them on the same page for longer. The fade-to-black with a married couple didn’t feel tacky or inappropriate, and hard topics were handled thoughtfully & with such grace.

And I have to say, perhaps the thing I loved best was how real & natural the characters’ faith is. They’re actively seeking God’s counsel and wisdom. Prayer and Bible study is a part of their lives. At no point did it feel preachy—it felt refreshingly REAL.

Lastly, justice for King Arthur! Iykyk. 😂

I really enjoyed this! I loved how we learned about their marriage as they did and they grew. It was an interesting modern twist on marriage of convenience. I would say it did make me a bit uncomfortable with some of the scenes but since it’s marriage it’s quite understandable. I feel like it was def one of the cleanest I’ve read though. I would definitely recommend. I will list some CWs tho since there are some harder topics discussed.

CWs: mentions of fostering and the foster care system, implications of diabetes on a person and their family members lives

Also great summer read since the MMC and later FMC 🤭 live on a beach! 🏖️ 😁☀️ 😎

Bram & Quinn

I don’t quite know how to find the words for this one. It’s such a sweet story. Full of faith, and trust, and the awakening of young love.

But there’s also depth, and a wee bit of pain as the story unfolds and both Bram and Quinn have to grow in their love for each other, and also realize the blinders they had both put on as they dealt with bumps in the road of life.

I’m impatiently awaiting the next Baxter book! This is my first book by Latisha, and most certainly won’t be the last!

I’ve been anxiously awaiting the arrival of this book. I was so stoked to download it today. There are so many things to love about Bram and Quinn. Although neither of them had each other on their radar, God had a plan greater than they could have imagined.
Their relationship required faith, trust, and humility - and some humor.
(Shoutout for the appropriate application of Phillipians 4:13!) 🤣❤️
My favorite scenes were the wedding, the storm, and the 💡 moment.
I'm a big fan of meddling neighbors and alligators, too.
I adored this faith rich, super swoony story. I can’t wait for Cyrus’ story!

3 ⭐️ this was a cute marriage of convenience with some Christian themes (that I loved). i loved it for the most part, i just thought that the third act break up was still not convincing enough for me what with the reasoning behind it. i thought he needed to grovel more - but that might just be me. loved the setting and i always love a moc trope, so definitely enjoyed the read. i just felt a little let down in that third act.
