She might be broke, but she’s far from broken. With an eviction notice burning a hole in her back pocket, jack-of-all-trades blogger Bree Tisdale is running out of time and options. When a ghost-hunting gig lands in her lap, the skeptic sees it as a chance to pay her bills while debunking what she’s sure is just another scam. Except, her handsome and broody co-worker doesn’t fit the con-artist mold. The more she digs, the more her doubts grow, especially after enlisting her reporter friend for a public exposé. The ghosts of his past refuse to stay buried—literally. Zack Liller has learned the hard way to guard his secrets, confiding in few about his unique talents. Little by little, Bree’s infectious energy chips away at his defenses, making him wonder if he can trust her with more than the job—perhaps even with his heart. Just when he’s ready to take that chance, their investigation at the haunted B&B takes a dark turn, revealing one of the most maliciously active sites he’s ever encountered. And if they don’t risk their emotions, they might gamble with their lives.
J.E. McDonald was born and raised in Saskatchewan, Canada, The Land of the Living Skies. As a child, she was either searching the clouds for identifiable shapes, or star-gazing way past her bedtime. She’s an anti-morning person who wakes up at 5am to write. Needless to say, coffee is a morning requirement. She cut her teeth watching Star Trek, James Bond movies, and reading the Harlequin novels her mother left in the bathroom—which resulted in an extremely skewed sense of sex education by age eleven. All of these factors contribute to her love of writing paranormal romance with humor, mystery, and lots of spice. J.E. resides in Saskatchewan with her husband and three daughters.
This was a perfect read before Halloween! What a fun and spooky ride!
I loved Bree's spunky, flawed self. She was a perfect match for sweet, broody Zack and his supernatural problems.
McDonald brilliantly wove ghostly tension among fantastic humor and steamy moments between Bree and Zack. There was a quick attraction between Bree and Zack, which I enjoyed a lot because it worked really well with the other difficulties they had with ghosts, Zack's secrets, and Bree's scepticism and mistakes. Speaking of, I was super concerned that they wouldn't be able to come back from the darkest hour, but it worked out really well for a lovely HEA.
Highly recommended for supernatural lovers, suspense mixed with humor and romance, and those who crave sweet, happy endings for imperfect protagonists.
Bree Tisdale, the romantic lead in J.E. McDonald’s paranormal rom com, GHOST OF A GAMBLE, is someone you want to go on an adventure with. She’s full of life, sass, and is adorkably scattered. Bree grabs an EMF meter with gusto and jumps with both feet into a supernatural world filled with fun, wonder, and really scary stuff. Toss in Zack, a super sexy ghost hunter, and you’ve got a super engaging page-turner. I’ll be jumping with both feet into the rest of the Wickwood Chronicles series.
‘Help wanted immediately, resilient personality, needs to keep an open mind’
Canadian author J.E. McDonald makes her literary debut with GHOST OF A GAMBLE, the first installment in her projected series the Wickwood Chronicles. Her genre – romance comedies with a paranormal twist, romantic suspense, and far future romance. ‘Wickwood’ is a ’sleepy little city pulling in tourists form all over the world with it charming architecture and historic sites. But there’s nothing ordinary about the history of occult hidden beneath its picturesque façade. Wickwood’s citizens know little of what lies beneath the surface – until its cracked open.’ McDonald lives in Saskatchewan.
And with that artful invitation McDonald introduces her main character Bree Tisdale – ‘a chronically late whirlwind without a filter who needs a job fast. When a ghost hunter advertises for an assistant, she jumps at the chance to work with the hottie even though she knows ghosts aren’t real.’
McDonald’s delightful writing style opens her new work with a description of that moment of meeting to which she refers – ‘The hard knot in Bree’s chest mutated into a hot burn. She really needed a job. Thunk thunk…Slowly she edged to the side and peeked around the board to check out what Mr. Combat Boots had posted. Probably looking for a roommate. She noticed his hair first. Brown with a hint of red, it swept across his forehead to stop below his chin. A dusting of stubble showed through his tawny skin, but nothing you could call a beard. And his clothes matched his boots. All black. He’s cute. Her heart did a double thump. Really cute.’
Mood established the plot develops well and proceeds as follows: ‘Bree Tisdale is a jack-of-all trades blogger whose work history is nothing but tragic. When she lands a job with a supposed ghost hunter—the mysterious Zack Liller—he threatens to upend her world. With an eviction notice in her back pocket, she doesn’t have much of a choice. Yet, as the mysteries pile up, the impossible suddenly starts to seem possible…even trusting in Zack and the fire he lights inside her. Zack Liller grew up with ghosts and has little time for fun and games. Reservations that Bree will be a good fit for his sister’s company plague him, but one day spent with the vivacious woman ends up convincing him Liller Investigations can’t do without her. Or at least, that he can’t. But, as things heat up between them, he is forced to wonder if he can trust Bree enough to be honest about his abilities. When the house they’re investigating turns out to be one of the most active he has ever experienced—and the most dangerous—he realizes he may not have a choice.’
This is fine romance cum suspense novel that immediately establishes J.E. McDonald as an author of importance. The Wickwood Chronicles merit a following, as GHOST OF A GAMBLE suggests. Very impressive debut novel!
What a fun rom-com! It hooks you with themeet-cute and then pulls you into a ghost story that's expertly paced. The story is quirky and witty with humor that works--heartfelt but a bit goofy. I wasn't sure what to expect and the unexpected kept me turning the pages. I liked the heroine's determination and refusal to take no for an answer even when she didn't fully think things through. It made her "all who wander are not lost" believable and relatable.
Ghost of a Gamble was a great romantic read with a touch of the paranormal. My favorite part of this book was probably Bree, she was such a ray of sunshine with a vibrant personality and I loved her character. The author really can write some great dialogue that made the characters feel real. She captured their sweet and slightly awkward romance perfectly. And even when things heat up it still retains that touch of awkwardness and has their personalities shine through even in those scenes.
Ghost of a Gamble starts shortly before Bree gets fired at another job. Then she stumbles into Zack who is posting a job offer and before she knows it she has another job. This job is different though, Zack works for a paranormal investigation company and Bree is convinced they are frauds and wants to uncover them. The more she sees, the more she starts to wonder if her initial belief that they are frauds is true, but she is a skeptic and doesn't believe in ghosts, right?
I liked both Bree and Zack, but especially Bree. I just love how the author wrote her, she has such a vibrant personality and I could totally see why Zack falls in love with her. Their romance is awesome too and I really could feel their connection. I thought Zakc was a great match for her, although he was a bit brooding at first. I enjoyed reading their conversations and the author really has a knack for writing some great dialogue. While this is a paranormal romance book the focus is definitely on the romance and that worked fine here. The slightly paranormal element was a fun side plot line and added a bit of a creepy vibe at times.
I didn't really care for the romance conflict, it was clear from the start what the conflict would be and what would break them apart, but I didn't really care for it or felt it really was such a big deal especially after what happened later in the book. Luckily it quite quickly gets resolved. I do like how the plot line of Zack not being sure whether to trust Bree with his secret is handled.
I liked that Bree was just a normal human being and even though Zack had a paranormal ability, that also wasn't the focus. The whole paranormal part is more about the ghosts and they use quite mundane ways to locate them mostly. There are some side characters with cool powers and it was kinda fun to see the side characters being the ones who actually had more paranormal abilities than the main characters.
I only had a few minor niggles. While I was reading this book I had fun and wanted to read it, but as soon as I put it down I just didn't really feel the pull to continue. Not sure why. I also felt like the plot line surrounding the haunted house could've been a bit more developed? It was quite slow to start and I would've liked a bit more of a hint or bigger reveals maybe about what actually happened there. Now it was a bit overshadowed due to what happened to Zack and then it all was fixed in the epilogue. I also thought the combination of creepy paranormal and the sweet adorable romance was a bit off at times, while it was a nice contrast at times it was also a bit jarring.
While I liked how the paranormal aspect was there, but a bit in the background, at times I wish it had been a bit more present. I still feel like I hardly have an idea of what is possible in this world or not and how things work. Even Zack's ability stays a bit vague. He rarely talks or thinks about it when we are in his point of view. And the rest of the people with a paranormal power are side characters and we don't really get to know how their powers work. It doesn't really get expanded upon and I would've liked to learn a bit more about the paranormal aspect.
To summarize: I had fun reading Ghost of a Gamble. It's a enjoyable paranormal romance book, heavy on the romance and low on the paranormal aspect. Bree and Zack's romance is great to read about, it felt realistic and I liked how adorably sweet and awkward they could be. Bree has such a vibrant personality and Zack was a great match for her. I liked the romance and there was some great dialogue. The paranormal aspect with the ghosts was a bit of a creepy counterpart to the romance. I liked the paranormal part, but the build-up of the paranormal plot line was a bit slow and I would've liked the reveal at the end to feel bigger or have more impact, now it was quite easily solved. All in all this was a fun read and I look forward to more books in this series!
New author J. E. McDonald’s debut novel Ghost of a Gamble is the first in a new adult paranormal romance series: the Wickwood Chronicles. While there are some clichés to the genre and some predictability (unfortunately, in some cases, this is inevitable), McDonald has written a debut that gives the paranormal romance a fun new story for many readers to enjoy.
Bree Tisdale is a young woman with experience in a plethora of work fields, yet quirky habits keep her from maintaining these jobs for long. Fired from her latest job and with a 24 hour notice to vacate her home, she knows she needs a job as soon as possible. Her prayers are answered when she meets Zack Liller who is looking for a worker for his sister’s business. Bree takes the job without knowing much about it only to discover later that the business she now works for dabbles in haunted houses and not necessarily exorcising ghosts, but rather to ensure the house is, indeed, haunted. Good thing she doesn’t believe in ghosts… that is, until events in a very active house make the impossible possible. Weary of one another, Bree and Zack must come to trust one another for both house insecurities and secrets. And discovering a yearning to be together, Bree and Zack must learn to keep their feelings in check in order to get the job done. That, however, may be easier said than done.
Lighthearted, romantic, humorous, and even, at times, suspenseful, Ghost of a Gamble is a fun read for anyone looking for something new. No reader need worry this book to be another young adult paranormal fantasy for McDonald has a more mature audience in mind to entertain and makes her story much more believable for a modern audience. McDonald’s strength most certainly falls in her writing style as it is fluid and carries the reader through her story with ease. Another strength lies in her use of descriptive detail, namely her use of scents. A small detail that may go unnoticed, scents play a rather large part in placing a reader into the book and McDonald succeeds in doing just so. From how a character smells (candy apple and rosemary and mint) to how an item smells (baked bread and spiced tea) to how even the air in a room smells (aged books and paper), the reader is always aware of his or her surroundings.
Another of McDonald’s strengths lies in her characters for they are all fun, quirky, and realistic. Bree is a strong female protagonist, yet has many flaws. She can be dependable, yet also unreliable. She can be stubborn, yet also resilient. She can be smart, yet also scatterbrained. Zack is a strong male protagonist, yet is incredibly insecure. He can be depended upon to get a job done, yet he will doubt if he did the job right. He will protect those he cares about, yet he is uncertain of how to express how he feels. While these are only two of the handful of characters introduced in the story, both are rather realistic. The relationship between these two is cute and believable. When they are uncertain about one another, Zack becomes incoherent and Bree won’t stop talking. They are also rather paranoid when they around each other for Zack keeps thinking Bree will laugh at him for what he says or does and Bree can’t read Zack’s actions, making her unsure how to act around him. McDonald also switches points of view between them, switching between characters with each chapter, giving the readers an inside look into each of their thoughts.
Of course, every genre has hidden traps that can easily ensnare writers and, unfortunately, romance is a genre riddled with them. While McDonald avoided a vast majority of them, there were still a few that surfaced throughout the story. One of the traps was having Bree and Zack take a liking to one another too quickly. Most romances, whether they are paranormal or otherwise, develop either too quickly or take too long to develop: Ghost of a Gamble saw Bree and Zack being more of the former. For two characters who show many signs of uncertainty, they are sure certain of how they feel about one another. With this being a series, this development of feelings could have been stretched out for maybe another book or two with just hints being introduced in book one. The good thing about having a quick relationship is the fact that it will please readers who do not like to wait, but this quick turnaround can also be rather predictable.
A character trap could be found in Zack. A majority of the time, the male protagonist is the one with unique abilities or who is a different inhuman creature entirely. Zack is introduced as a more angsty character and has golden eyes. Already, that raises some flags. Is he a vampire? A ghost? What is he? The good thing is that McDonald introduces Zack as a character the reader would not anticipate; however, who or what he is was only vaguely introduced in Ghost of a Gamble. With this being a series, though, there are plenty of opportunities to delve deeper into his character. Another trap was the romance part of the story. When McDonald wrote about the haunted house, she did an excellent job of describing the eeriness of a haunted house and there were times it felt like the reader was inside the house with the characters, taking part in a ghost hunting one finds on TV or YouTube. However, that eeriness was broken by the romance of Bree and Zack. Finding the ideal balance between paranormal details and romantic feelings is key to making a paranormal romance series memorable.
The first in McDonald’s Wickwood Chronicles proves to be an enjoyable start to a brand new paranormal romance series. With realism, humor, and even a bit of suspense, readers will enjoy Ghost of a Gamble. McDonald’s fluid writing style and her realistic characters are to be commended and welcomed into the writing community. Even when she focuses on the more haunted aspects of the characters’ job, she grabs and holds the reader’s attention with her descriptive detail. This series has even more potential if the main focus is given to the hauntings rather than how the main characters feel about one another. The ending also happened rather quickly and rather suddenly. For future books in the series, the endings should definitely be slowed down and explained to the readers for while there was an explanation to the haunting in the debut, the ending leaves the reader feeling a bit unfulfilled. Finding that balance that will leave readers feeling happy the characters are together yet also intrigued and disturbed by the horror aspects of the genre will keep the Wickwood Chronicles on readers’ radars for years to come.

This was not what I expected. It was really fun! I love the whole paranormal investigation part of the story! it's fun and engrossing! the was its written, you want to find out if it's a real haunting or not. Bree needs a new job! and just as her luck would have it, she runs into Zack, who is posting a job for his sister. Bree and Zack have a cute first meet. This is how Bree becomes an assistant for paranormal investigators. Her first job is a supposedly haunted bed and breakfast. oh, and she's a skeptic! but as things happen before her eyes that she can't explain, she can't hold on to her skepticism much longer. Nor can she fight her growing attraction to Zack. I like how brighteningly awkward Bree is. She takes life in stride, and no matter how life gets, she remains fun and has slightly chaotic energy. you never know what she will say. She always makes the scenes more fun and funny. She's also really kind and genuine. I'd love to be her friend! I also can't get over how adorably flabbergasted Zack would get! He always gets so flustered when he's around Bree and she unleashes her full, flabbergasting energy. He's sweet and thoughtful. I love how he views Bree as this light, this brightness on his life. A solid 4.5 🌟! there is spicy, less than im used to but its there and its awesome!
When this book started, I wasn’t expecting how funny it was. Bree is like walking, talking Murphy’s Law in action. If it could go wrong, it would happen to Bree. And the sparks between her and Zack crackle from the page. Zack could almost be the poster boy for “strong silent type”, except when he’s with Bree and turns into an adorable tongue-tied goof faced with his first crush. Then we layer in the paranormal elements that are handled with an exceptionally deft touch. They’re perfectly creepy and maybe just a bit too believable. I enjoyed this book so much and I can’t wait to dig into the rest of the series.
i was pleasantly surprised by this book! the story was captivating, even spooky at times, the fmc was relatable, and there was minimal cringe. and Zack... 🫠🥵
originally read it because i got it in a blind date with a book and the author is local to my area but i will definitely be recommending this to everyone and continuing the series!!
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. Bree gets fired again and then runs into Zack who is putting up a help wanted poster. Even after she spills her coffee on him, he gives her the job. Bree is a crusader for the underdog and the unaware. When she finds out what the job is and that Zack is a paranormal investigator, she plans an exposé. However on the first investigation, she finds out that there is more out there than she thought. Zach grew up around ghosts and pays the price. Bree had believed until her mother and sister squashed it. During the book, Bree learns to accept things again. When her plans to write about the case and the contract she signed almost ruins things between her and Zack, she is told some awful things about the house they investigated and she goes to warn Zack and the others. Zack is attacked by the spirits but survives. Bree comes clean and her boss' husband gets it solved. Zack proposes and they start a long engagement. It is a quirky tale of true discovery for Bree.
Bree is a job seeker. She keeps losing her jobs do to her chronic lateness. She has had all kinds of jobs. So when she is looking for another job after being fired from being a bakers assistant. She sees a flyer for a part time assistant. Zach and his sister run a haunted house certification business. This has some real funny dialogue and it has a great chemistry with the characters. Zach is keeping secrets from Bree and she is too. Do they find them out? Do they stay together? Are ghosts real? A great read.

This book is amazing! There is so much to love about it that I bought the rest of the series when I was only halfway through the book. It immediately drew me in with the humor, the growing mysteries of Zack and his family’s ghosting background and Granwin house. The descriptions of the haunting episodes were exceptionally chilling. Bree is hysterical! She has my exact sense of sense of humor and bad luck so I instantly connected with her. Bree and Zack meet right away in the first chapter and what a meeting it was, OMG! I laughed so much with this book, but it was Bree’s antics that had me in hysterics every time. Bree is my hero! She is fearless, manages to pick herself up by her bootstraps and carry on in moments of despair and willing to admit when she’s wrong and ready to make amends. She tries so hard but somehow manages to sabotage herself every time. Her main support team is her best friend, Inaya, and next to Bree and Zack, they are my favorite couple in the book. Those girls totally had each other’s backs, whether it’s with secrets or relationships, and the strength of their friendship is the sweetest and surest lifeline that they have to hold onto. There is nothing that they will not do for each other. I absolutely adored them together. Zack…SIGH…what an awesome guy and my new book boyfriend. He was immediately hit by Cupid’s Arrow and although he tried to turn down his reaction to Bree for very good reasons, he couldn’t fight his feelings for her. He is kind, generous, forgiving and will be so funny out of nowhere, he is a real dream. Ironically, it was the nightmare at the end that made them realize how much they truly mean to each other and let me tell you, that and the epilogue were moments worth waiting for. Even if I have to wait three years. LOL! It’s an inside joke but if you read the book, you’ll totally get it. The other characters don’t feel like secondary characters merely created to further the plot, they are fully part of the story and add so much to it. Zack’s mom and his relationship with his dad are very unusual to put it mildly and his super stern sister Grace, who is slowly growing on me, but made a huge impression on my heart when she put aside being a big sister and allowed Bree to take her place beside Zack when he needed Bree the most. Sam is Grace’s husband from the UK and has a very endearing and quirky sense of humor. It also felt like he was the peacemaker of the group and tried to help everyone understand each other’s points of view. He seems a little goofy at times but as the end of the book showed, he is definitely a man that you want in your corner. Lucas the officer is a hoot and tugged at my heart strings as all he wanted was some companionship, whether female or friend. And Selma! I cannot say enough about that little old lady who has won my heart for all time. Stella is a witch who came in at the end of the story but who still made me smile and was just as meaningful to the story and to the full reveal of the house’s mystery.
It's not all fun and games though as there’s the mystery of Zack and his family’s background and the haunting at Granwin house. Both mysteries held me captive as bits and pieces were revealed and made me want to race right to the end! The memories of the hauntings that were described drew me to another place where I could envision it all. I’m sorry but I just can’t find a better description than ‘chilling,’ and it’s only further proof that this author can write in any fashion! I’m very glad that there’s a book in the series that has the story of how Grace and Sam met because I just have to be the fly on the wall for that story. From what I read on the blurbs, so many other great characters come back in the series and I can’t wait to read their pairings. Stella and Lucas are another such couple for me. In the end, I left the book completely satisfied and yet eager for more at the same time and I couldn’t ask for more than that.
“Ghost of a Gamble” by JE McDonald is a delightful paranormal romance, which tends a little more to the romantic side of the plot than the supernatural background. As this is the first book in the “Wickwood Chronicles” this can change in the future, but for the first book, the interaction between both main characters, Bree Tisdale and Zack Liller, takes the most part of the plot, to the neverending joy and fun of the readers.
Bree Tisdale is a nice, lovely young girl, currently just been fired from her last job at a bakery. Not really her fault, she is a good worker, well mannered and pleasant, if she only could arrive in time it would be the perfect employee. But her lack of sleep makes it impossible for her to hold a job. Thus, despite her journalism degree, which only gets used in her online blog, Bree is constantly on the hunt for a job to pay her rent. Honestly, she is a mess, but a lovely, nice, fierce and very relatable mess, even when she just threw the contents of her coffee on a hot guy boots, and when said hot guy is about to become her new co-worker.
Zack Liller is a paranormal investigator, working on the family business and looking for a new assistant, after he just scared the last one away, by revealing a little to much on the business. Thus, he is on the search for a new one, tackling the first flyer as that girl comes around pouring coffee on his boots. Before he realises, she takes the job, and even comes along for a client interview. They go along like flint and flame, and Zach rapidly falls, despite her obvious disregard for the authenticity of the job, or the opinion of her sister, who happens to be the boss. Zach knows Bree is trouble, but she is a trouble he loves to be in.
JE McDonald story is highly entertaining, easy-to-read, fast-paced, funny, with a very good plot, interesting twists, and credible, delightful characters: Bree takes everyone in stride, and Zach – so out of his depth – is just so fun to watch, but make not mistakes, there is a lot more to both of them that it meets the eyes. A very good start to the series, and a perfect introduction to both characters.
JE McDonald’s book takes a classic ghost reality tv show and gives it a budding romance with great success. The main characters fit well together and their meet-cute is to die for. Whilst their backstories and original meeting set solid groundwork for their relationship, at points it seems rushed in a common rom-com fashion. I also love the side especially Zach’s sister, although Inaya does seem to create more drama than needed. With Bree, I identified strongly with the inability to get out of bed ridiculously early, but similarly feel like her and Inaya’s bizarre plan was a bit harebrain. Whilst her backstory provides some explanation for it, it quickly becomes an obvious plot along the trope of ‘heroine loses trust of hero due to lie/ miscommunication spinning out of control’. Given the originality of the book, it’s a bit of a disappointment. That being said, the book itself is an enjoyable read with mystery and drama as well as rom-com goodness. Would definitely recommend.
Plot: A (clearly) ADHD as fuck FMC and a golden retriever MMC do a paranormal investigation together, she breathes life into him when he's usually surrounded by death. It's trash but cute and I smiled all the way through it haha.
Spice: PG
Characters: There we're very few characters in this book. I really struggled working out who's POV I was reading; it wasn't clear at all. The characters we're pretty 2D, not much depth to them but still enjoyable.
World building: There was very minimal world building required in this book and there lacked any significant details.
Enjoyment: The spelling mistakes. The sentences that didn't make sense. The confusing perspectives. It feels like this could be a self published author? Despite how much the above gave me the ICK, I managed to finish the book and enjoyed the story. I won't be continuing with the series though!

Bree has a hard time keeping a job and she is always looking out for scammers and how she can expose them. She encounters Zach Liller minutes after losing her job at a bakery. Liller Investigations is looking for an assistant. Bree and Zach are immediately attracted to each other. Zach hires Bree without talking to his sister Grace first. Bree thinks that Liller Investigation is a scam operation telling people that ghosts exist. Bree doesn't believe ghosts exist, but that belief is challenged on the very first contract she takes part in. This book is a good mix of mystery, romance and humor. Spoiler: Zach and Bree get together. This is the first book of the Wickwood Chronicles. I read it after having read Ghost of an Enchantment, the second book. There wasn't much problem reading them out of order.
I really enjoyed re-reading Ghost Of A Gamble, it really reminded me why I loved this series so much. I still love Bree, she is so realistic. I could imagine her being a friend, she's so funny. I love Zack still, he's still my favourite and I still swooned over him. I really loved this novel and it's direction it went in. I loved the ghost/haunted house aspect and Zack's family. JE McDonald's writing is great, she knows how to hook you into the story and keep you there until the end, making sure you're left wanting more. Ghost of A Gamble is an easy read, it flows really well and the events that happen keep you engaged. The characters are all great and somewhat relatable, if I was as outgoing and as fit as Selma at her age I'd be happy! Such fun! I need to re read the others now I've got the Wickwood bug 🩷
Enjoyed it - especially the quirkiness of the characters and Zack's awkwardness around Bree. He was really adorable. What I didn't like... too wordy. I would've preferred about 50 - 100 fewer pages for a not-so-serious romance / mystery like this. Very descriptive scenes of the dates and hanging out in Bree's apartment that could've been cut down. But I definitely laughed / smiled / swooned a lot reading this. And I got a little creeped out in the haunted house! Also, the characters keep popping up in my mind like... hmm, I wonder what they're up to? So I will move onto book two when I get a chance. Good vacation reads or spooky-season reads, I think.
So, overall a strong recommendation from me for fans of paranormal romance with a bit of mystery.
What a great start to what sounds like it will be a really good series. There is mystery, drama and romance, so there is something here for everyone. After losing her job, Bree Tisdale bumps into Zach Liller, the co-owner of a paranormal investigation company. They are looking to hire someone to work as an assistance and Bree talks her way into the job. What happens to Zach and Bree while they are in the house serves as a second thread to the love story they find themselves in as well. I recommend this book if you are looking for a light read. There are a few intense scary moments but in the genre of a cozy mystery, they aren't too bad and the outcomes are good.
I love Zack and Bree so much I wish there was a sequel of them ghost hunting and continuing to bond. Name the job, Bree has tried it. Searching for a new one is how she runs into Zack, giving him the side-eye to his vague job posting that could be porn filming. Turns out, it’s ghost hunting! Bree jumps at the chance to try a new job that doesn’t require her to wake up early, and maybe reveal a bunch of scammers. Who believes in ghosts, anyway? Through a series of events involving her journalist friend, family, history, and hauntings, Zack and Bree become much more than coworkers in this fast-paced, humorous, romcom style, paranormal romance.
J.E. McDonald is a fabulous writer. I lost a lot of sleep over this book; it was a page-turner from beginning to end! I absolutely loved the plot, the characters, and the writing style. Bree and Zack are an amazing couple who are there for each other when the going gets tough. I liked the idea that some people hoped their place would be certified haunted, preferring not to rid themselves of their ghosts. If you enjoy action-packed paranormal romance with a good dose of humour, I highly recommend that you read this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This was really cute and I loved the couple! I also like that we are mostly in the head of the heroine and she is getting to know the supernatural family. That’s rare as we are usually in the POV of the people that can see the ghosts, so it was cool to uncover family secrets slowly.
The romance was tied up in this one but the mystery of the B&B wasn’t really so I’ll definitely be reading the next book.
I really enjoyed the writing as well. My biggest issue was just that the book took on a lot and I was annoyed at some very dumb mistakes out heroine made.
I really liked this book! I could have done with only a few paragraphs of sex but there was a LOT of sex. I also love paranormal stuff along with romance. She’s a skeptic turned believer and sees a lot of unexplainable stuff. I was hoping there would be more at the end considering the wedding was several weeks away. Not her wedding though. There’s more to this story than was written and I want to know what happened at the cabin! It’s a really great read. I’m looking at the next one in the series.
Easy to read, easy to enjoy. I thought the paranormal investigation plot was unique for this genre.
Despite the characters being in their late 20s, this story reads very YA. Bree sounds like an 18 year old, rather than a grown woman. She is definitely quirky, and her energy was not matched by the MMC. I rather read about a saltine cracker than that man.
I also wish there was more paranormal investigation and less unnecessary backstory. I thought the introduction of Bree’s family/childhood was a waste of space- added nothing.
A combination ghost story and love story. An entertaining red about a young woman who looses her job and on arriving at the town notice board sees a man putting up a notice for an assistant. The work is afternoons and evenings, so she signs on right then and there. Turns out it is a paranormal investigation company and she decides they are frauds and hopes to ferret out he fakery. Unfortunately she is wrong, there are ghosts and they are legit. A happy ending for all, including the ghosts.
Thoroughly enjoyed this book…will be purchasing Book 2. The interaction between the two protagonists was terrific. Lots of instances of goosebumps and many very funny moments. The only issue I have is with the proofreading…or lack thereof. There are numerous instances of missing words and misspellings. It’s easy to guess the missing words, etc., but it’s a shame that more care wasn’t taken because it really is an enjoyable book. As I said, I will be purchasing Book 2…and expect to enjoy it’s much as this one!
The book is a good paranormal romantic comedy read that will make you laugh out loud. The story is charming, funny, sweet, sexy, and fully of surprises. The story has a good story line. The characters are good, and they have good chemistry. The story is an enjoyable sweet romance read with thrills of ghost hunting that will add an dangerous element.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Spooky charm and hauntingly hilarious! I fell in love with Bree from the first page. She's a real character, with real vulnerability and reacts in a way readers could easily connect to. Zack was not your typical hero and I LOVED that about him. I loved their banter, their genuine reactions and how they worked well together. The plot was great and kept me on the edge of my seat. A very well written book with fantastic characters. I could read a whole other book with these two in it!
I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. This book made me feel like I was along for the adventure with Bree and Zack. Bree was a very sassy and bright light in the story no matter what she was going through. Zack was kind of a down and he was a bit buttoned up. But I think they were a cute combo for this book. It almost played like a movie in my head. This was a new author for me and I hope the rest of the series is just as powerful and fulfilling as this one was.
