Some secrets should stay hidden.
Lost Witches, family secrets, and a forest teeming with nightmarish creatures - Haven Hargrove must face them all.
Haven's search for her missing mother leads her into a forest plagued by dark magic. As the sinister magic spreads toward the nearby town, warping nature and humans in its wake, Haven must unite with her newfound cousins to balance the elements and stop the magical infection before it's too late.
In this spellbinding tale of courage and family, four novice witches are tested in ways they never imagined. Can the newly formed coven hone its magical skills to defeat the monstrous creature created by the dark entity in the woods? Or will its insidious power continue to grow and corrupt the Earth until there's nothing left?
The battle begins in the forest, where magic and darkness collide.

Officially a spinoff – though actually more of a sequel – from the original Chronicles of the Fallen One trilogy (which I haven’t read yet), Vengeance of Fire has a very rapid start, throwing us straight into the action with no preamble or explanation. Because of this, it is highly recommended to read beforehand It Watches (the chilling prequel novella, which details the events immediately before Haven confronts the doppelganger). As someone who tried to read Vengeance of Fire without the prequel, I would not recommend doing so (and neither does the author), I got to chapter 2 before conceding that I needed more to go on. But once I’d read the prequel, things immediately became clearer and much more enjoyable. There are very heavy spoilers for the original series, and in hindsight I would recommend reading that first, though this series can be read separately. My review below is very reflective of the fact that I am a details person. If you are happy with overview summaries of previous events and jumping in at the deep end, add half a star to the above rating.
The author’s description of her writing style is a perfect summary of this book: YA paranormal and dark fantasy with a sprinkle of horror. Aspects of this book (as with the whole of the novella) will make your skin crawl! Vengeance of Fire is the first full book of The Delvaux Witches series and sets the paces and mood for the rest of what is evidently going to be a gripping series, full of found (actual) family, elemental magic and dark forces.
Our primary FMC (Haven) is a fierce and powerful witch, set on uncovering the history behind her family’s coven, her mother’s disappearance and their dark and dangerous connection to the Canadian wilderness. We join her shortly after she intervenes with a doppelganger conjured by her newly-discovered, younger cousin Sarin (the rebellious and strong, but woefully untrained, teenage witch that is the focus of the novella). Together they hunt for their joint family, overcome past and present horrors and discover the truth of what really happened to their grandmother’s coven.
This book deals with both light (teenage drama moments) and dark (violence and death of loved ones) subject matter and contains a mild romance with a super-hot Lucifer (which seems random until you realise the original series is all about God, Hell, Angels and Lucifer - who isn’t as bad as he has been portrayed). This series takes a very different style, based very much on earth (with sprinkles of Hell), this is about people and the corrupting influence of power, rather than celestial beings. The characters are mostly your usual teenage types forced to deal with very unusual situations, including overcoming great lose and learning to develop their powers. In that sense, they are very relatable, though there are moments where you want to throttle them – so maybe they are your usual teenagers 😊
I suspect that the romance aspect would have been a delicious slow-burn if I’d read the main series – and I do feel a little cheated out of the runup (my fault for not having done the homework) – but what we have here is a sweet, though unlikely connection between two beings that share a history. It is also a true YA as that one scene is implied rather than on the page (at least in this book, I can’t speak for the main trilogy).
Overall, as I have mentioned, I think I would have enjoyed this book more if I had read the original trilogy, but it’s still a page-turner. I enjoyed the novella more (4/5) because it didn’t make so many references to a (awesome sounding) series that I haven’t read and also because it stuck with the small-town paranormal horror theme (rather than mixing in celestials) which made it easier to become immersed in. All that said, Haven is a take no prisoners warrior - I will never get enough of that – and Lucifer gives me everything I need to tick the dark shadow daddy box. Also the ending is delightfully brutal! I would recommend this series for lovers of Supernatural, feisty female main characters, magical covens with hidden secrets and chilling stalker vibes.
For transparency, I was delighted to receive an e-ARC copy of this book for review and look forward to supporting the rest of the series.
This was an interesting read! It definitely answers a few questions and the connection between Haven and Lucifer was especially fun! I will definitely be checking out the author's other series that Haven is a part of! If you enjoy stories about found family, close friends, magic, betrayal, and a touch of romance you should give this one a try! Thank you Tales and Teacups and Angela Dunham for sharing this book with me!
Tbh I was a little confused throughout this book, but I also didn't read the series before it so that was probably my fault. It is a spin off but I would think that you should probably read the series before first to have a deeper understanding of the backstory. I had to stop about 2 chapters in and go read the prequel novella (it watches) and that helped a little bit! The pacing of this novel is extremely fast, with little to no fluff throughout the book. This would be perfect if you're in the middle of a slump and need something short and quick with a lot of action to pull yourself out!
This book ended up with a Rollercoaster of emotions. Such a drastic way to end a book and can't wait what comes from it if another one is written. Adventure, love, surprises, family!!!
Not going to lie, I was a bit confused till about maybe a third into it as the character focus in the story switched from Sarin to Haven from the prequel novella. Looking back at it, I would have been entirely lost reading this book without reading the novella, so I definitely recommend reading the novella first before diving into this book!
The overall plot focuses on secrets unfolding within their coven and uncovering the familial history of Sarin and Haven’s past along with their efforts in trying to keep their remaining family together after the horrific events that occurred in the prequel novella.
At times, I felt the pacing of the story was a bit off. I would have liked to know more about the unique elemental magic system of the witches. It didn’t really explain the intricacies of it. Moreover, I felt that the whole side love story between Haven and Lucifer was a bit random. I found the romantic buildup and sexual tension pretty entertaining to say the least, but tbh was a bit unsatisfied with climax of their relationship when they sealed the deal. It kind of just happened and then it was over…. and a bit out of place in the middle of a high tension part of the main plot. I always find it odd placement when the focus couple have a sexual moment during peak plot time, but that’s just me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ On the bright side, Lucifer was a rather intriguing and sexy character that piqued my interest, heh.
Anyhow, it was a likable read, but in short - I expected more out of this book. Might continue the series just to see where Lucifer goes in his relationship with Haven.
His demeanor turned from playful to serious. "I'll do everything in my power to ensure that you do. It kills me to know you have to face those things alone. If I could leave this place, I'd burn down the entire world to keep you safe."
3.5/5 rounded up to 4 stars. I received this as an ARC along with the short story prequel it watches. I genuinely enjoyed this thrilling and haunting tale filled with twists and turns. I fully agree with the premise of the chilling adventures of Sabrina crossed with the Winx saga! The ending actually left me wanting more of Havens tale! The author had no qualms with breaking her readers hearts, and tearing apart her characters worlds! I really love urban fantasy but I do sometimes struggle with mentions to current popular culture trends. I also rarely say this, but felt the book could have been more in depth as at times it felt rushed to condense everything in fewer pages. Those are my only complaints, I would absolutely recommend this to someone looking for a lighter suspense story, or a lover of Sabrina and all things witchy!
While I did like this book, I won’t lie but I was a bit confused for about 1/4 to 1/3 of the book. I should have read the novella first, which is on me, so I will probably go back and read that before re-reading this one. I feel that it will help - so I highly recommend starting with the novella first! The book is incredibly fast paced by just throwing you into the story with no explanation. So it took a little time to get my footing.
The overall plot of this book focuses on secrets that are unfolding within a coven. Plus the uncovering of the family history of Sarin and Haven. Haven, our primary FMC, is a powerful witch, who is set on uncovering her mother’s disappearance. This book deals with both light and dark subject matters, along with some romance.
I think overall I would have enjoyed this story more if I read the original trilogy, Chronicles of the Fallen One trilogy. So that will be next on my list as I enjoyed the writer’s writing style.
Vengeance of Fire by Angela Dunham is an intriguing blend of dark magic, family secrets, and atmospheric danger. While the premise of novice witches battling a spreading magical corruption is compelling, the execution occasionally stumbles with pacing issues and character development that left me wanting more depth. That said, the book's setting—a forest teeming with danger—and its underlying themes of found family and courage kept me engaged. I'm curious to see how the series develops and will definitely give the sequel a chance. A solid 4 out of 5 stars for potential and creativity.
Continuing on after It Watches we have the next creepy installment in the Delvaux Witches.
We follow the journey of the doppleganger and our girls. We get into really creepy territory with The Void and all of that, which I can't tell you about.
In this installment Haven really takes the center stage, and boy is she a cool character. I'm hoping in the next book we really dive more into her history with Lucifer and why they are tied together because OH SHIT!
This is my book so I’m biased. This book is a spin off from my trilogy series The Chronicles of the Fallen One. It can be read as just a spin off with the prequel novel, It Watches, but I recommend the entire series for all the back story.
If you love a fast paced dark urban fantasy with morally grey characters that has the vibe of The Winx Saga, Supernatural, and Stranger Things - this book is for you.
What a rollercoaster! Following Sarin, Haven and Faith in their quest to right the wrongs was a fast paced emotional journey! The world building and character development was amazing. I very much enjoyed the twists and turns throughout the book. Vengeance of Fire has the potential to go so many ways and I cannot wait to see what happens next!
At first I was confused as to what was going on until I realized it wasn’t a stand alone and picked up where another book left off (I didn’t read the others). So I started to look at it in a different light with a new understanding and was impressed by the book. It jumped right into the action which does well to hold your attention. It made me want to read the other books.
Tears and suspense with that fun touch of magic! This is the newest book from author Angela Dunham. It begins a new chapter in the protagonist Haven' s life, and what a doozy! If you haven't yet read the series, I'd recommend the short prequel "It Watches" first. Actually I recommend the entire series, but with the prequel, "Vengeance of Fire" is totally readable.
I loved this book! I first started with the prequel book (It Watches) which really set the stage for Vengeance of Fire. I absolutely love reading about witches, and loved that it was set in modern day. It gave me the same vibe as the tv show supernatural which I enjoyed! What a plot twist at the end!
Fast paced but felt like vital information was missing. Preface to say I did read the prequel, It Watches, and I feel like it did not flow well into this story. Very grateful for the arc, just unfortunately not for me. DNF at 25%
3.5-4 stars for this witchy vibes book. Definitely hooked me on right away and kept me guessing. It did feel a little rushed in some parts but in general I enjoyed it!
Note: I did read the prequel, It Watches, prior to reading Vengeance of Fire.
While I though the premise of this story was a good one, it fell flat for me. Being set in Canada, I was disappointed in the misspellings and errors that could have easily been avoided.
The book jumped right into the action, and was very fast paced. I would have liked some scenes to be fleshed out more, give more context and background. I felt confused in some sections and needed to reread in order to understand and move on.
Overall, I do like Angela's writing style, and would be interested in reading other books by her.
Wow what a ride! I wasn't expecting to see Lucifer. He and Haven have quite a sizzling connection. I loved this book! The prequel should be read, it explains a lot. Also, I'm going to have to read the author's previous series because Haven is in it. Her battles are explained briefly in this book but I want to know more.
Found family, close friends, magic, betrayal, and a splash of spice can be found within these pages. The ending will blow your mind! I never ever could've seen that coming!
