Soon-to-be college graduate Seth McCartney finds his love for his favorite October pastime – visiting haunted house attractions – fading. No matter what he does, he can’t recreate the thrills he felt as a kid and teenager. His best friend and fellow horror enthusiast, Peyton Fischer, has already moved on from this tradition and wants to help Seth do the same, but not without one final hurrah.

Over the years, rumors of an extreme haunted house have repeatedly surfaced, yet Seth has never been able to find it. The fabled place has ten stories of unrelenting horror from trap doors, hidden threats, and “actors” that can not only touch you, but remove you from the house. Each level becomes more challenging the higher you go, and only a select few have made it to the exit on the top floor.

Intrigued, Seth and his friends follow a lead to the elusive haunt’s doorstep. It’s everything Seth could’ve imagined to rekindle his passion. A foreboding atmosphere. High-end set pieces. Realistic effects. But there’s a reason this locale has a frightening reputation, especially when its hallways contain the depths of true terror and survival isn’t guaranteed.

Fans of "Hide" by Kiersten White, "The September House" by Carissa Orlando, and "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson will enjoy "Legend Has It" by DJ Slater.

DJ Slater is a Milwaukee native with a love for sharing stories. He wrote his first in third grade followed by several more during his school years, mostly about dinosaurs and an ambitious detective. His passion for writing took him on an appropriate career path – journalism, magazines and marketing.

When not writing, he loves acting, singing, movies, his family, friends and (not surprisingly) haunted house attractions. A special shout out to his late Grandma Barb, who told him to write his stories down.

Feeling nostalgic for Halloween already...so why not have a lil' Spooky Season in January? Hopefully the ghosties won't get too cold though...maybe they can wear quilts instead of bedsheets.

ANNNYWAY, I'm really excited to start this one (even though I'm absolute coward when it comes to Haunted Houses in real life). (fingers crossed that I don't die of fright) (boo.)

For those of you who know me, you'll know that horror is definitely not my genre of choice. I typically read one horror book a year, around Halloween, with my book club. However, the more I heard about DJ Slater's Legend Has It, the more I wanted to read it. And I'm so glad I did.

Legend Has It follows a group of college kids who are looking for a legendary haunted house. Rumor has it, the house is the ultimate haunt, ten stories of scares, and Seth and his friends feel it would be the perfect way to close out the haunted house chapter of their lives. What follows is an edge of your seat adventure.

When I was in my twenties, my husband and I would go haunted house hopping, chaperoning the youth group. Reading this book was a nostalgic dip into my past. Of course, none of the haunted houses we visited were as, let's just say, intense, as the one Seth and his friends encounter. If you're weak of stomach, I would tread lightly, but if you're looking for a book that will raise your heart rate, you should definitely pick this one up.

While several horror books I've read in the past have gone off the rails and caused me to roll my eyes and reluctantly finish the books (you can scroll through my past reviews to see which books I'm specifically referring to) around the last three quarters of the book, this book didn't. In fact, make sure you have time set aside to sit and read, because once you're in the last twenty-five percent of the book, you're not going to want to put it down. When I finished the book, I longed for more.

With Spooky Season just around the corner, do yourself a favor and add Legend Has It to you TBR. You seriously won't regret it.

Legend Has It is D.J. Slater's cleverly written debut novel, and what a book it is! This heart-pounding psychological horror story blurs the lines between adventure and fear, held together by something far more sinister.

The story revolves around a local haunted house that has stood for decades. It boasts ten stories, and if you don’t piece together the puzzle, you get sent back to the beginning—provided you manage to survive. The true horror lies in what lurks in the darkness.

Intense, spine-chilling, and terrifying, the suspense and tension build continuously, making the fear leap off the pages. I won’t spoil what you’ll discover, as that’s part of the surprises awaiting you in the book. Suffice it to say, this is a must-read for lovers of horror!

Legend Has It genuinely surprised me in the best way. DJ Slater crafted a spooky, atmospheric story that pulled me in immediately, and that twist? Wow. I absolutely did not see it coming.

I loved the tension, the pacing, and the eerie vibes throughout. It’s one of those books where you think you know what’s happening… and then suddenly you don’t. A fantastic spooky read from start to finish.

Legend Has It
By DJ Slater

Themes:
😱 Horror
👻 Haunted House
🚪 Trapped

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)

It starts as an urban legend—whispers of a haunted house so terrifying that few who enter ever make it out. But for a group of thrill-seeking young adults, curiosity wins out. They want to find it. They want to prove it’s real.

And they do.

From the moment they step inside, Legend Has It never lets up. The tension and claustrophobia build floor by floor, until you can practically feel the air thinning. The unease is relentless, creeping under your skin and settling in for good. Each level of this twisted house introduces a new horror—familiar haunted house tropes turned on their head and twisted into something you’ll wish you could unsee.

I loved how creative and unhinged each new nightmare felt. Every chapter tightens the grip, every reveal drags you deeper into the dark. By the time the final floor looms, you’re as desperate to escape as the characters themselves.

Legend Has It isn’t just a haunted house story—it’s a descent. A trap disguised as a thrill. D.J. Slater captures that perfect blend of curiosity and dread, the kind that makes you ask, Would I have gone in too?

Turn the lights down low, but maybe... don’t read this one alone.

Haunted Houses have always been the creepiest part of Halloween for me. Circus, Fairs, Random creep houses in the neighborhood, all of them, just Creeps!

This book delivers! I love the spirit the characters have and appreciate Seth's experience not connecting with the magic of his childhood. I felt that.

The idea of going to an attraction, where the actors can touch you or drag you out of the house is a large No for me, lol, as well as for many people I know.

It is terrifying and I love it! This book’s fear and creep factor are top notch and I suggest lighting candles, turning off the lights and tucking in with this one, right before bed. Best if there is wind and maybe a little weather brewing.

Anxiety-inducing terror

I stumbled across this book while searching for another book and I'm so glad I did! I've read many thriller and horror books, but none like this. Ten floors of horror for the characters to survive in this haunted house. I could not put this book down and read it almost in one sitting. It was scary, creepy, gory, suspenseful, atmospheric, and produced such deep dread, I had to periodically stop for a moment and take deep breaths before continuing reading. A perfect read for Halloween - I felt like I was in the house facing the terrors with them. The ending was perfect, and the plot had enough twists throughout that it kept you guessing.

Legend Has It by DJ Slater is a fast-paced, spooky thrill ride that taps into the fear and excitement of urban legends. I had a blast following Seth and his friends into the depths of the haunted house—and the deeper truths behind it.

If you love horror with a nostalgic twist and a chilling atmosphere, this one’s worth the read. The haunted house setting is intense, and the story keeps you guessing as each level gets darker.

A group of friends discover a mythical haunted house that tours isolated areas of America, keeping the knowledge of its presence a secret, only available to a select few.

Seth can't believe his luck when he's one of the few with his friends to learn of its whereabouts. After becoming disillusioned with other haunted houses, the prospect of a legendary house with 10 floors of the most intense terrors ever created is a draw they can't resist. And the offer of a reward for making it through the house is an added bonus. Only some of the scares in the house start seeming a little too real, and when blood starts to get spilt, the fun soon evaporates.

This was a fast-paced, action packed, tension-filled ride, including a whole array of horrors: part human horror, part creature-feature and part supernatural. (This is not an extreme horror book)
I'd give it a solid 4.5 out of 5.

Grinning skulls. Flesh-flaying acid. Killer clowns. Bladed traps. Organ-harvesting surgeons. And that’s just for starters. Legend Has It is a rip-roaring ride through a haunted funhouse that boasts ten floors of deadly mayhem.

We join haunted house aficionado Seth, his old buddy Peyton, college buddies Dante and Marcus and designated gal pals Angie and Jessica as they seek out the legendary (and elusive) ten-floor funhouse. It’s Seth’s last chance to indulge his childhood passion for haunted houses. The others are just along for the ride… and the rumored cash prize for making it past all ten floors to the exit at the top.

Legend Has It is a scary good time. Writer DJ Slater hits all the right horror beats, and he hits them right on cue. It’s hard to believe this is his debut novel. Legend Has It boasts ghoulishly inventive set pieces, satisfying twists and fake-outs, and a cohesive story with an underlying mythology all of its own. The writing style is vivid and fresh, and the pacing is compelling. You won’t want to put this book down without finding out what awaits on the next floor. The entire setup of the novel reminds me of a puzzle box, or perhaps a game of Chutes and Ladders. After all, if you make a wrong move in the house, you might end up being sent right back down to the first floor.

Will any of the gang make it to the tenth floor exit? Who is the shadowy figure who greets them at the entrance of the house? Why are the different floors named the way they are? And who would set up this elaborate death-trap, and why? Legend Has It sets up tantalizing questions and then delivers on the answers.

If you love haunted houses, grisly set-pieces, and just good old-fashioned nostalgic horror fun, you really owe it to yourself to grab a copy of DJ Slater’s Legend Has It.

As a child Seth McCartney found it thrilling but now as a young man about to start college it doesn't give him the thrill he is looking for. After visiting haunted houses for years he is ready to hang up his ghost hunting boots. That is until his childhood friend and fellow horror junkie, Peyton Fischer, talks him into going to an extreme haunt. Seth has been looking for the elusive house with no luck. They end up getting a lead on where the house is located and end up taking on the challenge. It is 10 stories of horror just waiting to be discovered. Anything goes in this house so they must enter at their own risk. You are lucky if you survive to the end and are able to get out. As someone who doesn't normally read horror this one was hard to put down. The twists keeps you guessing and turning pages to see what will happen next.

Seth and Peyton have been going to haunted houses since they were in the fifth grade. It is their senior year of college, and suddenly the thrill of haunted houses isn’t there anymore. Peyton had not been into haunted houses as much since senior year of high school, but being the good friend he was, he was a good sport for Seth. Peyton went year after year to the haunted houses, until this year when Seth had finally admitted to himself that the haunted houses just did not have any frightening moments nor did they hold the same allure as they once had. Seth began telling Peyton about a haunted house that was legendary, one where the monsters… I mean actors could really touch the visitors. Of course the visitors had to sign a waiver before entering the house. Peyton had suggested “If this place is real, maybe it can be a therapeutic send-off for you. You know, one last hurrah before we say goodbye to it forever.” The only bad thing is that everything the guys had to go on was word of mouth from other people at haunted houses of the past. From what the legends said, the house is next level haunted and has many floors that progressively became more terrifying as the visitor advanced from one floor to the next. This haunted house is one that people are dying to visit, especially Seth and Peyton. The only question is, will they survive the fright of their life during this especially terrifying haunted house? To find out, read Legend Has it.

I have to say that I am not normally someone who likes to read books that are spooky like this one, but it was a really fun read! I was on the edge of my seat, and trying to yell at the characters through my e-reader like one would do with horror movies. This is the perfect book for anyone looking for something spooktacular to read with Halloween coming up.

Seth McCartney is a college student who loves October in his local town and in particular, haunted house attractions, he has been going to them with his best friend, Peyton Fischer since fifth grade and he has always loved the thrill of not knowing what will be going out at you and whether they will actually make you jump or not, but this year, the thrill just isn't there anymore and he is both disappointed and saddened by this, but as soon as jos friend talks about a mythical haunted house which is also an urban legend, his interest is piqued.

The next couple of days, Seth does his research and discovers that there isn't much information out there, but some accounts talk about high end set pieces, ten floors of increasingly complex and terrifying scenarios, dead ends and the fact that people going through can be touched and removed from the house by the actors, he is sold, but the fact that it is an urban legend still tempers his excitement.

The next day, a group discussion about this allows another friend to say how he made a discovery that cements the fact that it indeed exists and is only a couple of hours drive away, not to mention that there is a high entrance fee and entrants have to sign a waiver before they even go in and this gets them all excited and a plan is made to get a group together and go to the house that weekend.

As they approach their destination, the group sees just how intense this house could be, and as soon as they pay the fee, sign the waiver and go in, that is where the adventure truly starts and as they progress through the maze, they realise something isn't right, but will the group make it out in tact, or will the reports of missing people be added to? This is a suspenseful horror where everything is twisted and true horror isn't just about what is there, it is more about what lies between the lines.

Seth has always loved Haunted Houses. He and his friend Peyton have been visiting them since they were young kids, and nothing has ever come close to the thrill he gets from visiting and conquering them. But now both he and Peyton are about to graduate from college, and the thrill of the haunted houses has sort of waned. Peyton suggests they finally give up the tradition, having already grown tired of it many years ago, but not before they have one last haunted house hurrah. Obsessed with rumours of the ultimate haunted house, with several floors and waivers that have to be signed, Peyton begins searching for its location, determined that Seth's final haunted house will be the king of all haunted houses. A stroke of luck leads to Seth and his group of friends finding this mysterious house, but it is so much more than any of them is ready for.

What an absolutely amazing read for the spooky season. The tension and scares just kept ratcheting up all the way through this book, and I honestly just couldn’t put it down. The characters were great, and I loved how the haunted house experience brought out new facets of their personalities. I was not prepared for the amount of scares, heartbreak and the twists and turns, but I honestly loved every second of it. This has got to be one of my favourites this year. I recommend this to horror fans, who love a bit of mystery and the supernatural with their Halloween slashers. Sater really sets the scene, transporting the reader straight into a house of horrors that will stay with you even after you’ve read the final page. And that ending? God damn. Be prepared to have your socks scared right off; you will not be disappointed.

Legend Has It by DJ Slater is a gripping and atmospheric horror debut that cleverly blends urban legends, intensity, and palpable terror. The story follows Seth McCartney, a college student on the brink of graduating, who finds himself in the grips of the ultimate haunted house challenge when he stumbles upon an urban legend about a haunted house so terrifying, it’s said to be deadly. What begins as a quest to recapture the thrills of his youth quickly spirals into something far darker for Seth and his friend/s… and so the chilling developments begin…
Mr. Slater’s writing is quite vivid and immersive, pulling readers into a world where the line between reality and the supernatural blurs. The haunted house itself is a character - its eerie, an almost sentient presence lingers on every page, creating a palpable sense of dread. The pacing is tight, with moments of quiet unease punctuated by heart-pounding terror.
If you love spine-chilling tales with emotional depth, or are looking for a ‘Halloween’ read, then this is definitely worth the read.
Looking forward to more from Mr. Slater.
Happy Reading…

This was a spine-tingling read. It is a psychological horror with so many elements. I kept me gripped all.the way through even though at times I wanted to stop reading when points got to intense, which to me is the sign of good writing. This books is perfect for a spooky Halloween read. The author did an amazing job of creating the story and characters, the descriptions were so good that I actually felt I was there experiencing things with the characters
In this book we join Seth McCartney and his friends. Seth had heard about the local scary house and decides to go and explore it with his friends.
However what they uncover is more than just a haunted house. What hides inside is 10 storiea that they need to piece together to be able to leave but one wrong move sends them.back to the beginning.
With traps, danger and hidden threats and people they assume are actors so they have what it takes to survive.
I meant it's a haunted house there isn't any real danger to them is there? Hold on to your seats as the darkest part of your imagination comes alive and what they thought was a game turns into something far more sinister.

So I just finished Legend Has It by DJ Slater, and honestly? I wasn’t expecting to like it this much. I’m usually a romance girl through and through, but this horror story totally pulled me in.

It’s about this guy, Seth, who’s basically aged out of his haunted-house obsession — until his friend convinces him to check out this “legendary” extreme haunt. From there, things get dark fast. Like, the kind of dark where you start side-eyeing shadows in your own house.

What I loved is that it wasn’t just jump scares and gore. There’s this whole underlying theme about growing up, facing fears (literally and emotionally), and letting go of the past. The writing makes you feel the tension — like you’re right there in the haunted house with them.

The characters felt real, and I found myself actually caring who made it out. My only wish? A little more emotional depth or chemistry between them — you know me, I like a little heart even in the horror.

Overall though, 4/5 for me. Creepy, smart, and the perfect “lights off but maybe not too off” kind of read. Definitely recommend if you want a good scare with a little bit of soul behind it.

Seth McCartney and his best friend Peyton Fischer have explored haunted houses for years. They started in grade school and now are in their early twenties. Seth feels let down when Peyton admits that he’s outgrown the thrill of their October ritual. Seth’s loath to walk away from his past. A short time later, Seth and Peyton learn their friend Marcus has found an extreme haunted house in the Wisconsin wilderness. They recruit three more friends—Dante, Angie, and Jessica to accompany them for one final thrill.
Legend Has It has an intriguing hook as the legendary actors-may-touch-you haunted house has persisted for decades. The highlight of this novel includes the creative themes of each level. Superb setting descriptions, realistic dialog, and entertaining puzzles round off this exciting offering.
Legend Has It is for readers who love horror novels, creepy creations, and interesting traps. For fans of urban legends that come to life, especially haunted houses, it’s highly recommended.

Legend Has It by DJ Slater is horror to the extreme. Seth is a haunted house enthusiast. His parents began taking him to haunted houses when he was a child, and his love never wavered, until recently. Seth’s friend, Peyton, has accompanied him for years, but his interests have shifted and he has outgrown them. Seth is looking for one last house that would be his last hurrah. There had been rumors for years about a haunted house that is so scary, they will pay you if you make it through all ten levels of the house, but no details can be found. Seth’s friend Marcus believes he has found it. Marcus, Seth, Peyton, and three other friends, Dante, Jessica, and Angie, set off to find it. Once inside, the friends discover that this is a very different kind of haunted house. The detailed descriptions of each level of the house, the realistic banter between the friends, and following Seth’s thought process make you feel like you are right there with them. This book is scary, creepy, and all things thrilling. It’s an urban legend come true.

Legend Has It by DJ Slater. This is the perfect book for the time of year. Its spooky, full of adventure and just creepy enough to keep you on your toes. It's the story of Seth who has always loved haunted houses. He and his friend Payton have been going to haunted houses since they were in 5th grade. Payton and Seth are now Seniors in college and the thrill for haunted houses has dimmed in Seth's eyes. He just isn't thrilled by them like before. There is a rumored haunted house that is to be the most haunted ever. It has various floors, you have to sign waivers and its supposed to scare the pants off you. Seth decides he wants to go to this last one and see if its really what they have hyped it up to be. He and his friends set off to go thru this haunted house but Seth really has low expectations. Payton wants Seth to have the best experience ever so he's really hyping it up. When they arrive they find much more than they expected. Full of twists and turns and so many scary elements it will have you sleeping with the lights on. I loved this book!

Legend Has it by DJ Slater is a horror novel that follows the story of the soon-to-be college graduate Seth McCartney and his friends as they look for one last thrill at the legendary haunted house, rumored to be on overdrive, full of traps, hidden actors, and survival is only available for a select few. What begins as a fun journey turns into a real fight for survival as the lines between roadside attractions quickly turn into a fight for survival.
The setting, with 10 floors of increasing horrors, and the goal of survival, was a unique take. This book was such an amazing read, I couldn’t put it down. It was creepy, scary, and extremely suspenseful, leaving me with a deep sense of dread throughout the book. I was glad I picked up this book, as it was a fantastic read. This was the perfect read for October, and I can’t wait to see what else DJ Slater has in store for us, because this book will definitely stay with me for a long time.

I am very new into reading the horror/thriller genre and let me tell you, this book, drew me in even more then I thought it could. Legend Has It by DJ Slater, was unlike any book I have read in such a LONG time. Seth, needing more thrills in haunted houses, wants one last fun visit before he finally moves on. He decides to take friends and go to an extremely haunted house in Wisconsin. When they enter the house, they are faced with challenges, traps, terror, and so much more. (I don’t want to give so much away as I do not want to take away from anyone’s reading experience.)
Trying a new genre can be hard, but this book helped open the door more and WoW. Slater’s writing style grabs you and pulls you in so fast. I loved the characters, the storyline, the thrills. I fully felt like I was right in the story with them, It was simply a BILLANT read!

I usually dont pick up horror books. If i dont go to fantasy or romance, I go to murder mysteries. This was something new for me and it was absolutely worth it. While I dont read horror books, I love seeing scary movies and going to haunted houses with my friends. I love the thrill you get and honestly, they are just fun! I identified so much with Seth when he was looking for more, to be truly scared, because I feel that way about scary movies today. When they decide t try a new haunted house where the actors. Could touch him, I immediately had goose bumps, because personally, I wouldn’t ever do that. It is too real for me, but that is exactly what Seth and his friends wanted. Father reading this book I can 1000% confirm I will NEVER go to an actors will touch you haunted house.
If you like scary books and movies and want to get creeped out, this is the book for you!

Legend Has It is a chilling horror debut that blends psychological horror, urban legends, and coming-of-age themes. It explores fear, friendship, obsession, and the loss of youthful wonder. The story centers around college senior Seth McCartney and his friends as they seek out a rumored haunted house with ten escalating floors of terror. What begins as a nostalgic quest to rekindle childhood thrills quickly turns into a deadly survival challenge, where the line between performance and reality vanishes. Each floor of the haunted house introduces new horrors, both physical and emotional, forcing the characters to confront their limits. The character of Seth is thrill-seeking, and Peyton, his best friend, balances loyalty with a desire to move on. This book is a fast-paced read that delivers heart-pounding scares and emotional depth in equal measure.

DJ Slater is a first time author for me. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this ghost/horror story, but was excited to check it out. Horror is one of my favorite genres and Legend Has It far surpassed my expectations. There is gore, suspense, horror, a little humor, mixed with a bit of psychological thriller. The characters are at once youthful and energetic, thriving on adventure and Halloween scares, and sad, longing for a time they can't quite get back. This urban legend come to life story will capture the reader from the very beginning and squeeze tightly until the very end. The descriptive writing had me right next to Seth and his friends as they navigated each new, unique, and horrifying floor of the no-holds-barred haunted house. Never again will I wish a haunted house was scarier or more thrilling. What a talented author and a great book. I cannot wait to read more by DJ Slater!

This novel will suck you in. I feel calling it "horror" sells it short, although a fan of horror will likely disagree because there is plenty of horror inside. I prefer the label "thriller" because I didn't need to spend time visualizing the monsters, as I was frantically following Seth as he led his friends through the house, approaching each floor with the methodological attention to detail and careful analysis that I assume one would use in an escape room. Seeing his thought process, along with the unique residents and configuration of the house, kept this reader engaged even with minimal knowledge of haunted houses and escape rooms. Definitely much more than run-of-the-mill horror. Kept thinking it would make a great movie!

This is a new author for me in which I enjoyed reading. I enjoyed this author’s creative writing that made this story come to life. I also enjoyed how the author used details to make the haunting aspects realistic. This is a well written story about Seth and his fading thrill of visiting haunted houses. He tries to recreate this thrill but he can’t seem to until he hears of a ten story extreme haunted house. What happens when Seth and his friends find this house is something you don’t want to miss. I enjoyed Seth and his friends and the haunted house is great. They are strong, engaging characters that add so much to the story. I found this book easy and entertaining to read and hard to put down. This is a fast paced story that I highly recommend.this book.

Horror stories I always find to be quite hit or miss in terms of whether I enjoy them but this book is one of those that I can easily say was fantastic. This was pure thriller, edge of your seat type story as you followed the characters through each level of the house. The author really makes it feel like you are with the characters, experiencing everything they are going through.
I loved how simple the idea was for this book. It is something that you experience in things like games, yet this is the first time I have seen someone take it and use it as the basis of a story. And although it is simple, it is executed so well that it is an incredible read. I loved this book from start to finish and this author has definitely got a new fan.

Legend Has It by DJ Slater
5 Star Review
Oh my lands!!! This is definitely my five star rave for the month! This book has made my Halloween. What better than reading a book about a mysterious, and deadly haunted house that is not supposed to exist. This is ten floors of insanely scary and unusual creatures and events. Will the five friends make it out? Will they win any money? Is there really money or is this a fatal mistake?
The writing in this book is vividly imaginative, with creatures that even nightmares couldn’t create. DJ Slater is a wizard for spinning a creepy and terrifying story that has kept me on the edge of my seat for the entire book. I haven’t put it down since I opened it this afternoon! I will be looking up other books by this very talented author!

I usually am not a big fan of horror stories, but this one kept me on my toes!!
Seth and Peyton have been friends forever and shared the thrill of going to haunted houses. But as they approach the end of college, Peyton's thrill has diminished, whereas Seth, still chases the thrill. Seth wonders though if the thrill is worth it anymore.
They've heard of this 10-story haunted house but have never located it, until they get a tip of where it may be. It's supposedly so terrifying a waiver has to be signed and it cost $100 to enter. In order to get out they have to pass all stories. Some have and some haven't.
Will Seth, Peyton, and their friends make it out or will the "thrill" of this mysterious haunted house keep them?
