So happy I got found this

What a great book with actual tips for how to approach technology use with your kids. I really like that it has questions, discussion points and example worksheets. I feel like I can confidently approach this subject with my 10 year old, and the rest of the family now.

Children growing up in the smartphone and tablet era are more interested in screen than real world interactions with nature or people. It would not be far from the truth if one says that screen addiction is one of the biggest challenges that parents face when it comes to dealing with their children. Screen addiction affects mental health and emotional wellbeing of children. Smartphones, tablets, computers, and other interactive electronic devices are great tools to help children learn faster and keep them engaged, but at the same time these gadgets prevent socialization and personal interactions.
I recently came across the book Breaking Kids Free from Screen Addiction by Richard Bass which would serve as a great resource for parents in their efforts to restore their child’s mental health and get them away from screens. An experienced and knowledgeable educator, author, researcher, and child health advocate, Bass has written several books on improving mental health of children. Like this one his books have been serving as teaching and learning aids for parents, teachers, and educators.
Starting off with a comprehensive introduction on the disconnect between technology and self-regulation, Breaking Kids Free from Screen Addiction is divided into five distinct parts, each subdivided into chapters. Bass discusses various aspects of technology addiction and remedial measures across the 15 chapters in this book. “A lack in technology restrictions and boundaries can lead to a great disconnect between you and your child,” warns Bass introducing the problem. This disconnect gets compounded as children grow into adolescence and enter adulthood, changing the entire nature of parenting.
The five-part book tackles all aspects of technology usage, each section effectively detailing the cognitive effects of excessive technology consumption; psychological implications; preventing addiction to devices; age specific strategies to help children stay away from gadgets; and an entire section on interactive activities that don’t involve screens. I personally found the last section very useful as it details practical steps for parents to take to reconnect with their children without the interruption of screens and gadgets. The chapters in this section detail age-specific activities to engage children including reading, singing, coloring, sensory boards, baking, scavenger hunts, etc. The section on making activity calendar is very helpful for busy parents to make time and plan activities with their children.
Overall, I believe this book is a must read for parents, teachers, and anyone who works with children of all ages. The typesetting is pleasing to the eye, pictures and graphics provide relief from the text. A comprehensive list of references at the end of the volume is available for those who need more information on the topic.

Great topic very relevant for today

This book is really amazingly well thought out by the author. It covers everything from the detrimental effects too much screen time can cause to giving ideas of other activities to replace the screen and absolutely everything in between. It is very comprehensive and spells out every step carers need to apply to protect their children. I am so pleased with my purchase and have raved about this book to my own children so they can read it and implement everything given in the book to change their children's habitual screen time. It truly is a detox book with a difference. A great read.
