An Inevitable Magick (A witchy Romantasy): A witch paranormal romace

Rate this book
Liv Terrabella knew coming home wasn’t going to be easy, but she never imagined it could be deadly.

Caught between upholding a deathbed wish and the threat of an unknown darkness, Liv returns to the only place she ever felt safe, and the source of the ancestral magick that courses through her veins—Havenwood. But soon Liv realizes the magickal town from her past may not be the safe haven she remembers.

Broken promises and a moody old house aren’t the only things awaiting her return…

The Hawthorne family has been responsible for balancing the magick of Havenwood since its founding, a role Jaxon Hawthorne has meticulously built his life around. It may not be the life he once dreamed of, but for years it’s been quiet and the magick comfortably predictable. Until a string of ritualistic murders shatters that fragile peace.

With the town on edge and looking to him for answers, the last thing he needs is to come face-to-face with the woman who haunts his memories.

Now the danger that once tore them apart may be the only force strong enough to bring them back together. But with magick faltering and something dark targeting the witches of Havenwood, if they can’t face it together this time, they risk losing far more than just each other.

Welcome to Havenwood, where magick thrives, secrets refuse to stay buried, and love is inevitable.

An Inevitable Magick is a paranormal romance, perfect for lovers of witchy romance who crave a higher stakes plot, witty banter, a mystery that will pull you in, and an angst-filled romance that is guaranteed to end in a HEA.

Practical magic meets small town romance meets the house of wind meets Hocus Pocus (but the witches aren't trying to such the life energy from children) meets the beautiful brain of Lex Kelly.

I haven't read a book this un-put-down-able in months and I really needed it.

A story of second chances, new friendships, beautiful banter, a house I want for myself, an incredible small town, misfits, and love.

I cannot recommend this book enough.

Lex, I cannot wait for what's next.

Liv returns to Havenwood 12 years after slipping away without a word to Jax. They must work together to uncover the murders happening in their sleepy town, and in doing so rekindle the love they never lost.

“He came straight for her, colliding with her body and lifting her off her feet by her ass with one arm, never missing a stride. A moment later her back met brick, her front met his, her head landed in the cushion of his other hand, and his mouth crashed into hers with the force of twelve years of frustration, twelve years of pain, twelve years of longing. And deep inside her something cold and hardened cracked open, filling her with warmth.”

I absolutely loved this story, and I truly cannot wait for the next in the series. It is this perfect blend of Gilmore Girls meets Practical Magic with a sentient, warm and comforting house that everyone wants!
An Inevitable Magick has an array of characters and each new character is my new favorite making me crave their story next. This story was unique and comforting at the same time, I want to go to The Bookstore, I want to grow an herb garden and learn to make soaps and candles, my Pinterest is not full of witchy cottagecore.
I also loved how even though Jax was so devastated by Liv leaving him, he was able to forgive her and understand why she did it, and he didn’t want to waste another second without her.
This story does end not quite cliffhanger-y, but you definitely are left with a feeling of “I need more, where’s the rest!”

“Maybe some girls wouldn’t find being pressed to a tree in the woods a fantasy, but for Liv, it was perfect. The rough feel of the bark of the tree on her back, the smell and sound of the sea crashing, the way it all mixed perfectly with the smell and taste of Jax. Just kissing him again like this was a whole body and soul experience.”

What a magical and amazing read. I am struggling to believe this is Lex’s first ever novel. The writing, the storytelling and the characters were masterfully crafted.

What you can expect:
🔮 Witches and magic
🔮 Found family
🔮 A small town mystery
🔮 House in the woods
🔮 Magical sentient House, yes it will make you food
🔮 Fun side characters
🔮 Romance and angst
🔮 Forced Proximity
🔮 Second chance
🔮 Tasteful spice 🤌😮‍💨

This book is one of my favourite reads this year. It’s so well written, visual, romantic and angsty all in one fun bunch of characters and banter. I am obsessed with Jax, he’s the perfect mix of fun, grumpy, selfles and lovable. The story is mature, starring characters over 27 and it’s refreshing to read that!

Liv is such a lovely character. I enjoyed her discovering herself all over again. Getting in touch with her magic and family roots. She is so easily lovable.

Don’t sit on this one. This is the perfect season to get lost in a magical witchy read.

ARC Review

4.5/5 ⭐️

An Inevitable Magick by Lex Kelly is the first book in The Secrets of Havenwood series. Twelve years ago Liv Terrabella’s mother moved her and her sister out of Havenwood to keep them safe. They left so quickly that Liv wasn’t able to say goodbye to anyone including the man she loved. When their mother died, Liv vowed to protect her sister Ivy. One day the deed to their sentient home in Havenwood arrives. Liv refuses to go back and tries multiple times to get rid of it, only for it to keep coming back. She sees it as sign and decides to return to her hometown. Havenwood is a small town in southern California where witches, just like Liv and Ivy, reside. It’s protected by wards and is a safe place for them. The Hawthorne family has been responsible for keeping the magick in the town balanced since its founding and now that responsibility has been passed down to Jax Hawthorne. When Liv left without word, Jax was heartbroken. Seeing the woman who haunted his dreams again is painful for him. When dead bodies end up on the outskirts of town, Jax and Liv must work together to figure out who behind ritualistic murders. But when secrets start to unravel and desires flare, will they be able to put the past behind them for the sake of keeping their town safe.

This debut book from Lex Kelly was so good! I loved the characters, storyline, and the plot was well developed. I liked the magical realism and the mystery element. I loved how Liv learned to embrace her magical abilities and that Jax encouraged her to be who she really is. Jax was such a sweet, loving, and caring MMC. No matter how much time passed his love for Liv never wavered. Their banter had me laughing the entire time. I loved the found family aspect of the story. Liv, Jade, and Quinn are the definition of best friends. The surprises towards the end of the book definitely leave it open for the story to continue. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series!

Thank you Lex Kelly and Truly Yours PR for the ARC!

Whew, someone give me a fan!

I really enjoyed this debut novel. I really liked it was magical realism, although there was a lot of magic , it didn't feel misplaced. Liv Is a complex character , as is Jax and wow, their chemistry Is off the charts 🥵. For lovers of spice, this is good. No ick words in sight!

All the other characters played an equally important part to the over all story and it built slowly with its rich descriptions of Havenwood and the people that lived there.

I did how ever get confused at one point of whether it was set in Scotland or Cali but once I knew it was Cali , I got over the use of American English, as I thought it was Scotland because of Logan and where he's from. I absolutely can't wait to find out where the story goes from here.

What a fun debut on this small town witchy book!

Short Synopsis:
After leaving her hometown, Liv returns home after 12 years. She wants to protect her sister and returns to their magical house that’s been waiting for them. Only to find out her new neighbor is her ex - and the man she left behind.

My Thoughts:
This was such a fun fall read. The magic was fun with a small town feel of Stars Hollow (but with magic). And I’m a sucker for a second chance romance with a slow burn. Jax and Liv were 🔥.

The friend group was my favorite - especially their drunken shenanigans. But even with a solid cast of characters, my favorite character was the sentient house - because a house can be your favorite character … right?

It seems like the rest of the friend group will get their time to shine and I’m excited to see what happens with Jade, Quinn, Logan and Declan.

What You’ll Find:
🏠Magical house
❤️‍🔥Forced proximity (neighbors!)
🔥Slow burn
💕Second chance romance
🫶Found family
🔍Murder mystery
🔮Witchy

I want to begin with the good which is that new author Lex Kelly writes beautiful descriptions of nature and the magic of it. The Terrabellas’ power being rooted in nature was very cool. The sentient house was also interesting and cozy and more stories of it caring for the sisters would have been a welcome addition.

That being said, Kelly deserves to read this book out loud. Dialogue reminds me of things they would say on Riverdale. Incredibly cringey and unrealistic. The descriptions of the “spice” and characters internal thoughts about the love interest truly had me making faces. They were so uncomfortable and frankly, yucky.

The most unbelievable part of this story is that these high school sweethearts are still hung up on each other after 12 years of no contact…not that fact that they’re witches in a magical SoCal town.

As a couple, Liv and Jax are gross together. Individually, they’re not great. Jax was an awful boyfriend, and his possessiveness and entitlement to her isn’t cute. He also talked so much when Olivia wouldn’t even respond and he would keep talking?? He was Edward Cullen-level obsessed with this woman he hadn’t seen or spoke to in over a decade yet he didn’t want to even hear her speak.
Liv is also a terrible sister and always paints herself as the victim of terrible circumstances (despite having a magical house, supportive friend group that took her back instantly, ex’s parents still love and care for her, nature powers, loving grandmother who taught her everything she knows, she’s hung up having to leave her teenage boyfriend behind to care for her sister). I deadass do not blame Ivy one bit for being made to feel like a burden and not wanting to leave the mansion with her considering she got no context from Liv. Hopefully, there’s some character growth and Liv doesn’t always paint herself as the victim in the next book. Take some responsibility for uprooting your sister’s life multiple times and not bothering trying to teach her magic even after your mother’s death.

I am hoping Lex Kelly spends the next year prior to the release of the sequel developing her writing. It’s a nice idea for a series about this magical town, but the dialogue was not good. A good editor and a team of a Gen Z and Millennial test readers could go a long way.

✨An Inevitable Magick✨

Oh my goodness, I so enjoyed this cozy, small town witchy Romantasy by @authorlexkelly!

Set in Southern Cali, we find ourselves following the first person POVs of (mainly) Liv and Jax. After 12 years away, Liv returns to her hometown where witches reside, keeping their magic safe from the outside world, and her sentient house. But the reunion is far from full of joy.

Having left in the night 12 years ago to keep her mother and sister safe, Liv told no one she was leaving, which included not only her friends but the love of her life and all their dreams.

But returning to protect her and her sister from whatever magic has been following her doesn’t end here. Liv, Jax, and their amazing found family must navigate hard relationships, dark self truths, and an unfamiliar magic before their witchly town becomes more than just a target.

This story’s romance was sooooo good. The MMC was literally perfection in his unconditional love, support, and empowerment. Each character was so unique and funny and I see such great potential for the continuation of this little town and its witches!! I can’t wait to see what happens next- although I wouldn’t be mad about more with this FMC and MMC.

Ps. Second chance romance has my heart. Maybe cause I’m living it but it also just hits so much harder than most.

Tropes you may find in AIM are second chance romance, small witchy town in southern Cali, murder mystery, he tends her wounds, nickname, elemental and other intriguing magics, found family, plot twists, delicious medium spice, all the banter, cinnamon roll MMC, and stand-alone feels with an open ending.

I am so thankful to have gotten to read this gifted arc. I’m 100% here for what happens next!!

Where do I even begin?

Let’s start with the fact that this is a debut novel, but you would never in a million years know. I’ve seen and read many “BookTok” hyped books from seasoned authors that don’t even come close to An Inevitable Magick. This story’s characters are all distinct and interesting with a clear voice, the pacing and flow of the story is on point, her writing style is poetic and vivid, magically lifting this story from its pages into your imagination, while not overdoing it like some books where you’re screaming “WE DONT NEED ANOTHER METAPHOR FOR AN ORGASM, GET ON WITH THE STORY ALREADY.”

Now let’s talk about the relationships our FMC has in this book. My personal favorite. We have our second chance romance with Jax and Liv that is quite literally everything you want. He’s so freaking swoony and hot and perfect. He sees Liv for who she is and meets her where she’s at. But he also isn’t afraid to call her out on her bullshit (when she needs it) which is just personally my perfecttttt cup of tea. Then there is Liv’s relationship with her sister which is complicated and a little broken, but it felt so authentic to how true siblings interact with each other. The friend group as a whole was probably my favorite. They are all distinct and have clear motivations for why they are the way they are. The banter and jokes, the feeling of comfort that can only come with knowing someone for so long, the unwavering support and love they have for each other. Lex wrote it all flawlessly. I need more and more and more!

This story is a second chance romance, but it isn’t just that. It isn’t filled with formulaic romance scenes and plot points and smut that we’ve seen a hundred times. There’s actual depth to this story. There’s a romance that feels real and attainable (Yes, we all love when the MMC stalks the FMC and growls and kills peoples and all that but let’s be serious, if this happened in real life we would all be sprinting out the door or calling the police).

This book does leave you with some unfinished business but also wraps in a way you are completely satisfied with. She’s managed to conquer a skill that I see many authors struggle with which is not showing all the cards of the story just yet. You know there is more, you crave more, you need it. She gives you justttttt enough but you close the book saying “Holy shit. I have to see where this is going next.”

If this debut novel told me anything about who she is as an author, it’s that she is a force to be reckoned with. One could say even a little ✨magickal ✨ herself. She’s made her presence known in the writing world and I can’t wait to see where she takes us next.

Spirit save me, THIS BOOK! This was so well written, I felt like I was transported. Like I grew up here in this adorable little magickal town and these characters were my friends. The dive bombing pigeon, the chaotic family dinner, the casual B&E girls' night, to the Digambara ritual. Honestly, where do I find friends like this?! Liv is loving and selfless, Jade is a tiny little spitfire, Logan is charismatic and hilarious, Jax is thoughtful and good with his hands, Declan is broody and quiet. All the men are deliciously hot, of course. Quinn! While shes not the FMC, shes's byfar my favorite character. I felt an immediate connection to her. She's colorful, blunt, wild, funny, and empathetic... to say the least. Love her with my whole heart.
An Inevitable Magick gave me comfy cozy fall Practical Magic vibes but sexier, with more magick, and a moody sentient house. I loved everything about this book. I can't wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

As someone who is slowly piecing together her alchemy garden—I LOVED this book! This is the world I want to live in!! I loved the magick of this story, it’s fun and powerful, but with limitations. I appreciated how the rules of magick were gradually shown to us. I genuinely got chills every time Ivy did a spell incantation, it’s so perfect!! 🙏✨ The characters are so much fun, each is distinct and fully realized, and came with great banter! My favorite character by far is the house, I love that sentient house 💖🏡

This was a great debut book. Witches and magic and mystery galore! Very atmospheric. And can we talk about the house! Let me tell you, that house is a whole mood. 😂 I really enjoyed myself with this one and can't wait for the next book. Such a fun cast of characters. Plenty of family drama and did I mention a house that knows what it wants. So fun. Definitely recommend picking this up.

Synopsis: A magical town, a homecoming, murder, mystery, and witchy/ritualistic mayhem.
Format: E-Book
Review: Paranormal Romance…say less! This was a great witchy read just in time for those Fall TBRs. I love a story about sisters; Liv and Ivy were such an interesting pairs to watch to find independence and their place in the world--even if you have to move in separate directions. I genuinely believe there is more to come in this story, and not all journeys are easy. I enjoyed Liv and Jax; they had great chemistry, and I loved their playful banter. Lastly, possibly one of my favorite characters was the amazing house--honestly, I wish a sassy-pushy, no-nonsense house was a real thing. I want one.
Pros: Sisters, Sexy men, A sassy house with a mind of its own…we need more of this.
Tropes: Paranormal Small-town Romance, Second Chance Romance, Witches, Elemental Magic, Sentient House, Found Family,
Favorites Moments: I love when an author finds a way to use the word "kismet,' organically. I love that word.
Recommend (Yes/No/Maybe): Yes! It's a perfect read for a Fall TBR or those who love all the witchy vibes.
Thank you, Lex Kelly, for allowing me the opportunity to read your debut novel.

An Inevitable Magick by @authorlexkelly is a fun witchy romance with plenty of magic and spice! I loved the will they or won’t they vibe with Liv and Jax and really enjoyed Jade, Quinn, and Logan! An Inevitable Magick
Lex Kelly
2024 - Rose & Thorn Books

You can never go home again, but sometimes you don’t get a choice about going back.

Liv Terrabella left Havenwood, California, over a decade ago, following her mother and younger sister away from the only home she had ever known and the group of friends she cared for, including her high-school sweetheart, Jaxon Hawthorne. Now, ten years later, Liv, along with her younger sister, Ivy, has returned to the ancestral magic house of the Terrabellas, as well as all the broken relationships she had left behind. But there is more than just the chance to reconnect with her past at stake for Liv. The Terrabella women have long had roots in earth magic. As one of the oldest magical families in town, they have had a certain responsibility in protecting Havenwood, a sanctuary for all magic users and other outsiders seeking safety within its borders. But Liv has been away from Havenwood for a long time, and her now deceased mother had cut both Liv and Ivy off from their inherited magic. Both of them struggle to understand their power, as Liv also attempts to reconnect with the fractured relationships with her old friends, particularly with her long-lost love, Jaxon. As a mysterious threat prods at the protective borders of Havenwood, Liv seems to have arrived back home just in time to help solve the mystery of just who could be endangering both her hometown and her family.

Author Lex Kelly’s debut novel, An Inevitable Magick, hearkens to familiar urban fantasy tropes: the witchiness of Charmed, the small-town feel of Gilmore Girls, the magic house of Encanto. In that sense, there is nothing particularly new or different here. What is interesting, however, is the story of Havenwood itself. Built in the nineteenth century as a haven for those who couldn’t quite fit in elsewhere, particularly those of magical descent, it is an interesting mix of mystical and mundane, a town where the witches and wizards live side-by-side with the normies, and everyone just accepts this. The idea of a community built around everyone seeking sanctuary together and working together to build a town in which everyone is equally protected has a lot of promise, particularly as it mixes quaint, small-town politics with an intriguing navigation of what it looks like to be a magical person living openly and honestly in a place that accepts it. Take that metaphor as you will, but it provides an interesting change from the Harry Potter-style hidden magic in broad daylight, which often is the case in urban fantasy. While this sort of acceptance seems only to be in Havenwood - or at least this is the reason given for why Liv cuts herself off from magic when she leaves town - the fact that nobody hides it or feels the need to keep it secret is a fun twist in the story.

Where the book falters, however, is in the pacing of the story and its character development. At the heart of Liv’s journey is a mystery: Why is it her mother rejected her magical heritage and fled Havenwood after Liv’s grandmother’s death? It is this decision that has created the trauma that has come to define both Liv and Ivy’s lives. Cut off from their heritage, they are struggling to figure out how to reconnect, both to themselves and each other. The shared, painful emotional journey of these two sisters should have been the focus of this novel. Instead, Kelly focuses her story not on the Terabella women, but instead on Liv’s relationship with Jaxon, her childhood sweetheart. The romance between the two, which frankly was a foregone conclusion from the moment they reconnect in the novel, feels as if it swallows the story up completely, pushing the true heart of the novel - Liv and Ivy’s relationship - completely to the side. Ivy becomes a tertiary character in the story, and consequently never sees any real development into a character in her own right. Rather, she is turned into a trope of a whiny, bratty, self-centered teenager with a bad attitude, which perhaps would be acceptable if Ivy were intended to be a fifteen-year-old. The fact that she is a young woman in her early twenties acting like this feels weirdly misplaced, and makes little sense when you try to wrap your head around their fractured relationship dynamics. Ivy’s old enough to live on her own. If she doesn’t like it, she can go! Why is it so important that she still lives with her parentified older sister? What is their story together? Why is it that Ivy hates Liv so much, and what was it like for these two abandoned girls growing up with a mother dealing with mental illness and her demons? These are the things I was most interested in from the story.

As for the romance part of the story, which frankly, takes up an outsized chunk, it is fine. Nothing is sweeping, intriguing, or different with the relationship of Liv and Jaxon. They are the typical “childhood sweethearts reconnect” sort of story, well and good. Why it takes such a central focal point in the novel is frankly confusing when the emotional heart of the story seemed to be much more in the relationship between the sisters. Yet the simmering, “will they/won’t they” of the Liv/Jaxon relationship takes so much of the plot's real estate that when they finally decide they will, their steamy encounters take up another giant part of the plot. I never cringe at good smut in a book, but for the first time, I think I have finally found a book that perhaps has a bit too much smut for my liking. Many key setups in Kelly’s overall story are left by the wayside in favor of Liv and Jaxon’s sexy times in the woods/greenhouse/actual houses (plural), among these is, sadly, Ivy, who is a character I am supposed to at least care about when we get to the climax of the story. The fact that I don’t means that when we get to the big reveal at the end of the book, it sort of feels…meh! Okay, sure, now we have this as a plot point, but why is it important? And why should I care? Kelly hasn’t built it up or earned an emotional response out of me, and because of that, it left me feeling rather unfulfilled at the end. Yes, we went on a journey, but not a particularly exciting one. I wanted to see more out of this.

Overall, Kelly’s story is an intriguing premise for a first-time book, but it suffers a bit from not understanding what sort of story it's trying to tell. Is it a torrid, bodice-ripper romance? Is it a Charmed-like modern magic fantasy? Is this a tale exploring generational trauma and the lasting damage it can cause? Yes! It is all of those things, but sadly, the most interesting part of this story is the one that gets the least attention. Here is to hoping that this problem is fixed for Kelly’s subsequent novels in the series.

Wow, where do I even begin with this review?
Lex Kelly is a goddess. A writing queen. She has cast a spell on me and this book is now my entire personality.

Prepare to be sick of me because I am going to be talking about this book non-stop for a LONG time. I will never stop recommending it and I literally don't know how to even put into words how much of an impact this book had on me.

When I read the synopsis of this book it sounded like the perfect cozy fall read.
What I thought I was getting:

What I actually got:

From the very first chapter of this book I was completely hooked. It gave me Practical Magic meets Gilmore Girls Fall vibes and I couldn't get enough of it. Between the magickal small town, the (sometimes sassy) sentient house and the amazing characters, its guaranteed to become your newest obsession. They storyline was intriguing and mysterious, and definitely left me needing more! This book completely consumed me and I couldn't stop thinking about it.

Lex has the most beautiful and descriptive way of writing that captures you and makes you feel as though you are part of the story. I could feel each of the characters emotions and felt deeply connected to every one of them. I am so invested in this story, this town, and all of these relationships. I don't want to go back to reality, I want to live in this quaint little magickal town of Havenwood forever. I am 100% going to have the worst book hangover until I can get my hands on book 2...

Do yourself a favor and buy this book immediately. You can thank me later.

An Inevitable Magick by Lex Kelly is such a delightful small-town tale filled with magic, family secrets, a thrilling murder mystery, second chances, and a slow-burn romance with loads of witty banter! The characters come to life so vividly that you can't help but fall in love with them and truly feel for their journeys.

Liv and Jax, our main characters, are quite relatable as they navigate their pasts while hoping for a second shot at love. Liv is always putting others first, sometimes to her own detriment, which leads her to doubt her own strength and confidence. But don’t worry—Jax is always there to remind her just how valuable she is, even if he does it in a moody, protective way that will totally melt your heart.

I absolutely adored Jade and Quinn! They bring such fun to the story with their vibrant energy, quick wit, and unwavering loyalty to their found family. Chapter 36 with Liv, Jade, and Quinn had me laughing out loud!

There are so many memorable moments—from the quirky magical house to Jax’s family dinner, the town hall meeting with him and Deacon, and the clever back-and-forth between the characters. The twists had me on the edge of my seat, leaving me hungry for the next book!

Now, I will admit that at times the pacing felt a bit uneven for me. Some sections flew by too quickly, while others could have used a bit more detail. A touch less world-building in the beginning might have allowed for a deeper dive into the excitement of the later chapters, which were so captivating I didn’t want them to end!

But what I loved most about “An Inevitable Magick” is that it took me back to my younger days when I first discovered the world of “adult” romance through Nora Roberts’ trilogies like The Cousins O'Dwyer and The Key. Those stories will always have a special place in my heart, so for “An Inevitable Magick” to evoke those same feelings while still being unique and complex gets it some extra love from me!

If you enjoy stories filled with witches, elemental and dark magic, found family, second-chance romance, some spice, a gripping murder mystery, and family secrets, then “An Inevitable Magick” by Lex Kelly is right up your alley.

💗Something I Loved: It’s kind of an obvious answer but… the magical aspect. I’ve read my fair share of witchy romances & they often feel a little too cutesy, the magic excessive & silly, but An Inevitable Magick did it perfectly in my opinion. It was witchy, whimsical, & full of magic while still seeming realistic somehow & I loved how authentic the characters felt. I adored the “main” characters (Jax, Liv, Logan, Jade, Quinn, and Declan) but also thought the side characters were amazing… Mac is hilarious & Cori is the cutest addition (not to mention the way Logan and Jax are with her 🥵🥵🥵). I grew to love these characters & their relationships so much & think that Lex did a fantastic job building these friendships that felt so genuine and authentic.
🫤Something I Would Have Changed: 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’ve got nothing. I loved it & can’t wait for more.
🥰Favorite Moment(s): When Liv’s sentient house, Havenhouse, plays wing man to Jax #itsrainingprotection. But also when Jax gives Liv a gift & matches the color to a pair of panties he swiped from her (I don’t know why I find that so hot but I do). Oh, or “girls night” because that was delightful & hilarious 🤣 “Damn. Why do I suddenly want to be a really good girl?” (FYI Lex’s writing overall is just really funny).
🌶️Spiciest Scene: Ch 38-39. It got real steamy in that greenhouse & I’m not sure Havenhouse or myself will ever be the same after 🥵
📚Standalone vs. Series: The first book in Lex Kelly’s The Secrets of Havenwood series. The next book will feature Quinn & Declan & based on the sneak peak we got in the epilogue, it’s gonna be good.
📖Would I Recommend: Yes, yes, yes. Going in I knew next to nothing about this book (in fact it wasn’t until after I started that I realized I wasn’t even following @authorlexkelly🤦🏻‍♀️) but it surprised me in the best of ways. This is Lex’s debut novel & I’m so freaking impressed. The things I’d give to be able to read the next book right now….

Thank you to Truly Yours PR & Lex Kelly for the opportunity to read and review this e-ARC.

Liv Terrabella is going home. With an unknown darkness looming and a promise to her dying mother that she'd protect her younger sister, Liv packs Ivy in the car, and follows the signs home to Havenwood—the small town from her past, and the root of the magick that courses through her blood.

The Hawthorne family has been responsible for balancing the magick of Havenwood since its founding, a role Jaxon Hawthorne has meticulously constructed his life around. But when his sister's most recent prophecy threatens to shatter that well-crafted stability, he'll find himself face-to-face with a past he thought was out of reach and the woman who never stopped haunting his memories.

To keep their home safe from deadly forces, Liv and Jax must work together to uncover who's behind the ritualistic murders plaguing the town, and what they want from the witches of Havenwood. But as secrets unravel, so do their desires, and soon they must decide whether to stand alone against the darkness or risk their own hearts for the thing they want most—each other.

Liv knew coming home wasn't going to be easy, but she never imagined it could be deadly…

This was a perfect autumn read! I really enjoyed the small-town vibes, second chance romance & found family. Definitely reminiscent of The Ex Hex - similar vibes, different story! If you enjoyed that book, chances are this one will be up your street too!

I really liked all the main characters in this book, Liv & Jax were cute. All of the side characters were likeable & I loved the friendship they all shared. I think the relationship between sisters Liv & Ivy was explored so well too, I neeeed to see how it pans out.

The mystery that was the undercurrent throughout this book, had me guessing the whole time. I can’t wait to see where Lex goes with this story.

Plus I just LOVE small-town witchy vibes for autumn, and this fit the bill perfectly.🍂

An Inevitable Magick is a charming, small-town tale with secrets, mystery and magick rooted in founding family history plus a thoughtful, moody magic house!

With a strange twist of fate and eerie, unsettling darkness looming around the border, Havenwood's founding family descendants are reunited either finding or returning to the small magick town.

We closely follow Liv and Jax's journey full of tension, healing, and sweet and spicy moments. Liv is nurturing and soft; also powerful and learning to harness her strengths to build confidence and find peace with situations outside of her control. Jax is broody and alluring; a protector by nature. I adore a man who falls first, hard and willing to go to the ends of the earth for the one he loves.

We also get to know the found family and have a great time with their banter and drama! Each character brought a unique perspective and experience to the story. There wasn’t a character who I wasn’t intrigued with or didn’t want to know on a deeper level even the more haunting ones.

Lex writes poetically with imagery flowing from the pages. Her words are beautifully crafted and I very much enjoyed the dialogue! The emotional pull from characters in their element made my soul come alive especially when Liv worked in the garden. I love when book title parts are sprinkled throughout the book and can watch the pieces fall together to reveal why.

I cannot wait for the next book to explore more connections and solve mysteries in Havenwood.

Thank you so much to Lex for the gifted ARC and for being an inspiration to follow your dreams! Your acknowledgments & author note are such a heartfelt treat and a reminder to keep pursuing what sets your soul on fire regardless of what it looks like to others.

Here’s the perfect new book to add to your spooky season tbr’s!

Havenwood is a unique town, founded by six magical families as a sanctuary for those who practice magick. Liv’s family is one of the original six, and she has lived there her entire life. But at 19, she makes the difficult decision to leave in order to care for her ailing, alcoholic mother. Years later, after her mother’s passing, the deed to her childhood home mysteriously appears on her doorstep, calling her back to Havenwood.

Upon her return, Liv realizes that facing the life she left behind—including her ex, Jax—is only the beginning of her challenges. A dark magic now threatens the town, and with a dead body found under suspicious circumstances, Liv realizes she’s been drawn back to solve whatever sinister mystery is at play.

An Inevitable Magick is perfect for spooky season. One of my favorite witchy elements was Liv’s sentient childhood home, which had so much personality and very much reminded me of the House of Wind from A Court of Silver Flames.

I also loved the cozy, small-town charm where everyone knows everyone, making the relationships strong and an integral part of the plot. It felt a bit like a witchy Stars Hollow. And of course, there’s just the right amount of spice woven into the story.

That said, I did struggle with some pacing and plot development issues. A few parts were confusing, and I had to reread sections to stay on track.

Overall, this was a really fun read! The epilogue hints at which characters will take center stage in the sequel, so I’m excited to see where The Secrets of Havenwood series goes.

I’d recommend this to fans of mysteries, elemental witchcraft, and small-town, second-chance romances.

What a great debut novel!

Shortly after the death of their mother, Liv Terrabella starts to feel a presence following her and her sister, Ivy, so she moves them to the one place she knows they’ll be safe. Havenwood. The same place their mother forced them to flee 12 years prior without a goodbye to anyone, not even Jaxon Hawthorne, the man Liv thought she would spend the rest of her life with. Back in her magical hometown, Liv will have to confront everything she left behind, including herself.

This really had a little bit of everything: magical/witchy elements, romance, mystery, great friendships and witty banter- literally everything I could ask for! I, like other reviewers, especially loved that the house was a character in its own right. I know that the second book will be following Declan and Quinn, but I hope we’ll still get to visit Havenhouse. In general, I thought the magic system was well developed and easy to follow.

But of course my absolute favorite part of this story was the romance between Jax and Liv. I am a complete sucker for a second-chance romance and this one was no exception. I loved seeing their relationship evolve as they reconnected, and I only wish we had gotten to see a little bit more of how they had come together when they were teenagers.

The pace was a little slower than I typically prefer, but for this story I found that I really enjoyed how slowing down allowed for a lot of character development. I also think that makes this the perfect book if you’re looking for something to really sink into this fall. Definitely looking forward to the second book!
