The Immortal Fae King #1

Queen of Sorrows

Rate this book
Surrendering to the immortal fae king was never her choice. Falling for him will be her greatest betrayal.

Deirdre’s fate was sealed before birth: one day, she would become the bride of the Deathless One—a title that promised more chains than vows.

Desperate to escape that future, she risked everything to flee with the man she loved. But when her defiance ends in blood, the immortal fae king drags her to his isolated realm, not as a queen, but as a captive.

With the vicious creatures and ancient magic of Kane's kingdom bending to his will alone, Deirdre's only hope as a mere mortal lies in wielding deceit like a weapon to cut down his defenses. Yet each clash with the fae king sends her resolve wavering between hatred of her immortal captor, curiosity about his secrets, and a genuine allure as inescapable as her situation.

The closer she gets to uncovering a weakness to destroy him, the more she's ensnared by his shadowy charms. To escape, she must find the weakness that could destroy his soul, but with every whispered promise and stolen moment, Deirdre’s resolve wavers.

The Deathless One is not what she thought, and with war brewing on the kingdom's borders, neither can afford her hesitation. But honoring her original plan will shatter both their fates...and following her heart will destroy the very world she vowed to save.

Uprooted meets The Cruel Prince in this lush, dual-POV fantasy romance that's perfect for readers who love epic worlds, enemies-to-lovers, slow burn romance, and meddling pixies.

It’s a good story. It could be great. But there are things missing for me. And also, I have a hard time with some of the writing, the conversations feel a little stiff, robotic. And the FMC, who in the beginning seemed so fierce and cool, feels weak and stupid by the end. I was really into her story in the beginning, but somehow that changed throughout. Kane on the other hand, he became more interesting by the page. I want to know more about his story. Kane is dark, but behind that darkness there’s something. He’s misunderstood. Although he is savage, but I don’t think he wants to be.

If you feel like so many books are lately advertised as an enemies-to-lovers story, and in the end, you feel like something was lacking, then Queen of Sorrows, Book 1 in Eliza Tilton's Immortal Fae King series, is the right choice for you.

Queen of Sorrows is a true enemies-to-lovers story, filled with gut-wrenching plot twists and turns, a cliffhanger that leaves you gasping, and an array of emotions ranging from deep and pure hatred to something akin to love and understanding. The story is action-packed, without dull moments, fast-paced, and with the type of plot to easily pull you in.

Right from the beginning, we are thrust into action as we follow Deirdre, who is trying to outrun her faith as a child of the prophecy and doing her best to live her life according to her own choices. But nothing is ever simple when prophecies are involved, right? And Deirdre will painfully learn that her choices are not her own. Are they even those of Kane, the immortal Fae king? They are two people deeply wounded and scarred by their past, guided by a prophecy and thrust into a situation neither of them actually wanted.

"I may be the villain in our story, but I will not become the monster."
Kane

As I've said, Kane deserves the hate he gets from Deirdre, and I am not sure I, as a reader, could ever fully forgive him for what he did. Deirdre struggles with the guilt and the pain throughout the book, not knowing what the right thing to do is. And I completely understand her. She makes her fair share of bad decisions, and just as you think there might be a light at the end of the road, everything explodes into chaos of pain and betrayal. We are left needing to know what will happen next, and I can't wait to see the rest of Deirdre and Kane's story unfolding in the sequel. I loved being Eliza's ARC reader and will hopefully remain one in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters are relatable even from a magic standpoint. I had a really hard time liking Kane, but the author built his character throughout the novel. I was left on a cliffhanger to anticipate the next installment of this unfinished love story.

An epic fantasy story about a girl who was fated to marry the deathless king and in doing so was to unite the human and Fae realms. The problem was the Fae king hates humans and has banned them from his realm. When he makes no move to claim her, she runs away and marries her best friend and lives a happy life for a year until he shows up for her, kills her husband and takes her away.

Trapped in the Fae realm she undergoes the cave of blessing and not only passes it but bonds with the unicorn inside the cave who blesses her and gives her a promise to come if she calls on him.

She meets her husband the king’s cousin who promises her freedom in exchange for helping him subdue the king. Before this happens though she learns more about the king, her new husband and her feelings start to change towards him but when his cousin enacts his plan she has no choice but to go along with his plan or be killed as a traitor to the king and the country now.

Together she and Gideon escape into another realm knowing Kane will be coming for them and if not him then the other evil force that is bent on taking over the Fae and human realms as well!

This was the first of at least two books and has left me waiting anxiously for the second book to come out so I can continue the story and see what happens
next!

It’s been an exciting page turning fantasy of enemies to friends ( almost) back to enemies and maybe more later depending on what transpires in book two! With Deirdre being the girl of Prophecy to unite the realms whose to say if she still won’t somehow accomplish that task even though she has been sidelined by Kane’s cousin Gideon!

This book is well written and will hold your interest throughout and I wholeheartedly recommend you read this intriguing and fascinating book but just beware you’re heading for a cliffhanger at the ending
and will have to wait for Queen of Tragedy book two to continue this exciting story!

When she comes of age, she will be surrendered to the immortal fae king. That’s what Deirdre believes her future is. But when the time came, the fae king didn’t come. Then she move on and married another man. In the middle of their happiness, suddenly the fae king comes after them and everything is going wrong.

Deirdre's story starts by breaking our hearts deeply. There is so much darkness in the story. Dark romance, dark magical creatures, dark adventures, negative emotions, painful past, heart conflict and many more. The lies, betrayal and hatred are so deep. They punch and stab your heart at the same time. The slow-paced plot is suitable for a story like this and, yes, is full of pain, drama and agony. Is this not an enemy to lovers story, it is married to a villain one. Every chapter plays with our feelings and minds, especially when a decision or feeling is conflicted with a political action. Kane, the Dark Fae King, is very damn wicked, but he is also being misunderstood by everyone. I started to like him in the middle to the end of the story. He just needed someone who loved him dearly and taught him empathy. There are so many magical beings here, which makes the story more interesting, especially the connection between them and the magical elements.

Queen of Sorrows surprised me in all the right ways. It’s dark, emotional, and full of that delicious enemies-to-lovers tension that fantasy romance fans live for. Deirdre’s connection to the Deathless Fae King, Kane, is messy, painful, and magnetic all at once and I loved that the story doesn’t shy away from how complicated fate and choice can be.

The worldbuilding is lush and dangerous, with prophecy, betrayal, and fae magic woven together in a way that feels alive. I especially liked that we get both POVs becuase it made Kane more than just the typical brooding immortal, and gave real weight to their conflict.

The pacing wobbles a little in the beginning, and sometimes Deirdre’s choices frustrated me (girl, please communicate), but by the halfway mark I was hooked. The ending leaves a lot hanging, but it made me want the next book immediately.

If you like your fantasy romance with high emotional stakes, tension you could cut with a knife, and a heroine determined to fight her destiny even when it breaks her heart, Queen of Sorrows delivers.

I love Eliza Tilton's ability to weave a story rich with details and fantastic world building.
My emotions were pulled in so many directions with each chapter that I found myself fully invested in Deirdre's character and hating Kane for how the start of this played out.
As the story continues, I felt like I was fully on Kane's side, and at the end, I was furious with Deirdre and her choices !

There's a conniving cousin, mischievous pixies and more to keep this reader wanting the next installment, Queen of Tragedy!

I thought this book was pretty good. The world building was amazing. As were the characters. So well developed and realistic feeling. It felt deep and pulls you into the drama and chaos of this story. So I was invested in this from beginning to end. I loved both main characters. Neither were what I thought they would be. So I loved that.
A really good book. And I can’t wait to read the others.

Good story with good flow. I did think that a couple of parts were a little repetitive, but still, overall, a good book. It leaves off just as thinks are really getting interesting, so I am looking forward to seeing what will happen next!

I love a good multi POV story! This was such an enjoyable read with reluctant feelings, a dragon shifter, political intrigue, and meddling pixies.

A girl was raised to be the bride of the Immortal Fae King but he never showed. Once she created a life for herself and was truly happy, everything changed.

There's the death of a loved one, starting a new life against the will of the FMC, and betrayal. But I really like the progression of the main relationship. I'm all for the sweet moments coming out of distrust so this was perfect for me. It has that Beauty & the Beast vibe going on. So, if you enjoy that, then you'll love this!

It's fairly fast-paced and the struggle of both the FMC and the MMC come from different places but they are still fighting the same feelings and the forced proximity helps them see the different sides of each other.

I loved the pixie banter, the nickname "Thorn," the world building, the unicorn, the soft side of the MMC, and the lavender shortbread cookies.

I didn't love how fast the FMC trusted (but she's young, so I understand). Yeah, that's it.

But trust, who to trust, is always the question because if you're kidnapped, do you trust the kidnapper or the person the kidnapper doesn't want you talking to?

I received this ARC with no obligation to write a review.

I loved this story can't wait for the next book. Human girl, part of a prophecy to marry the Fea king. Kidnapped, betrayal, manipulation and evil around the corner. Deirdre doesn't know we're to turn. I recommend this story to urban fantasy lovers.

I just devoured this book in almost one sitting! I only stopped at 90% because it was past my bedtime and I knew I would want to jump right in to the next book. I finished it at the first opportunity the next morning, and I am so glad to have an ARC of book 2 ready to go!

I love the pacing of the book, as I was sucked into the action almost immediately. World building and exposition was built into the story, thought admittedly a bit shallowly done. I’m ok with that, because it was a dive straight into the plot, and I’m here for it.

The characters are good, and I definitely felt a connection to them, but I found them to be a bit flimsy. Deirdre swears she is a gentle, nature-loving nurturer, but insists on pursuing her hatred for Kane even when she learns more about him. I understand trying to prolong the tension, but it felt forced. She was also too easily swayed by Gideon, when all he offered her was “freedom.” Freedom from what? She knew her destiny from birth, and accepted it long ago. How could she possibly live “free?” What else does she have in her life? Would she just live alone in the woods with her donkey? 🤷🏻‍♀️ what is she fighting for? It didn’t seem like a strong conviction on her part.

Kane wants to be morally gray, but is actually just a traumatized guy who never learned how to rule. He doesn’t seem to do much ruling, just rushing off in response to the Lich King. Who is running the kingdom? Maybe that is Gideon’s complaint and the reason he is trying to overthrow Kane? Again, unclear.

Overall, I liked the book and it was a quick and entertaining read, so I gave it 4 stars. However, it was kind of shallow when I look back on the story. Will I read the next one? Absolutely. Immediately. Will I read the other 3? Depends on whether Deirdre and Kane gain some depth and keep my interest!

I typically like enemies-to-lovers romantasy, but this dark villain romance is not for me. It's well written. It's got good world building and character development. And I can understand why an author would want to explore the "what if you were forced to marry a man who killed your husband?" question because that's the sort of character stress that can make for fascinating character conflict.

My problem is, this isn't exactly what I was expecting from the book. The blurb makes it sound like she runs off from an arranged marriage she knew was happening and the fae king "slaughters her betrothed" shortly after. But in the first few chapters, we learn the fae king never came for her, the humans were telling her he never would, so she runs away with her childhood friend, they get married, and they are living together as husband and wife for a year before the fae king (Kane) suddenly shows up and murders her husband not because he's compelled to by prophecy but because of a dare.

I don't think I'd have started reading this if I'd known that's how the story began. It just enough different from the blurb that it wasn't quite what I was expecting and I don't want the story to go enemies to lovers. It's not a long book, so I did finish it, but I just disliked Kane more and more as it went on. Sure he has some sympathetic backstory moments, but he slaughters one of his own innocent subjects and thinks of capturing and subduing Deirdre as a fun game.

If this book was about Deirdre taking down the villain who killed her husband, then it might be more satisfying for me. It could even be a romance if someone other than Kane was the love interest. I do appreciate that she had realistic emotions in response to Kane, but I'm sure from the enemies to lovers tag she's going to forgive and fall in love with him and I don't want to keep reading the series for that.

Note: this book was given to me as an ARC; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Wow! What a book!
This is a very fast paced book, and when I think I have it figured out a huge plot twist happens. I devoured this book in two days and would highly recommend it to anyone. There are some dark themes in the book but its smut free which I appreciate. I will definitely be looking forward to book 2!

Okay, so I just finished Queen of Sorrows by Eliza Tilton, and honestly? I’m still processing my feelings. It’s one of those fantasy romances that pulls you right in with the promise of prophecy, fae courts, and forbidden love — you know, the dangerous kind that’s probably a bad idea, but you’re rooting for it anyway.

The story follows Deirdre, a human girl who’s been prophesied to marry the immortal Fae King, Kane. Naturally, she’s not thrilled about that — I mean, who wants their destiny written for them? So she runs away, tries to make her own life… but fate has other plans. And when Kane finally comes for her, oh boy, it’s complicated. There’s magic, mistrust, tension that practically crackles off the page — classic enemies-to-lovers energy.

What I really liked was the world-building. The way Tilton describes the fae realms, the creatures, the magic — it’s lush and immersive. It’s got that dangerous beauty vibe, where everything feels both enchanting and a little bit deadly. Plus, the dual POVs really help you see both sides — Deirdre’s defiance and Kane’s brooding intensity (he’s got that “I’m powerful but emotionally stunted” thing going on).

That said, there were moments where I wanted to shake Deirdre a little. She starts off strong and independent, but later she makes choices that had me muttering, “Girl, no, please don’t do that.” Still, she’s easy to root for, especially when she’s standing up to Kane. And the chemistry between them? Slow-burn, a little toxic, a lot addictive.

The ending… ugh, that ending. It’s one of those “wait, what?! that’s it?!” cliffhangers that has you side-eyeing your Kindle like, “Guess I’m reading book two now.”

Overall, I’d say it’s perfect if you’re in the mood for a fantasy romance with enemies-to-lovers tension, magical kingdoms, and a heroine fighting against her fate. It reminded me a bit of Sarah J. Maas’ early works — dramatic, romantic, and full of fae politics and power plays.

Would I recommend it? Yeah, totally — as long as you don’t mind being left hanging at the end and can handle a bit of angst. I’d give it a solid 4 stars for the world, the tension, and the promise of where the story’s heading. Just be ready to yell at the characters a few times — in a good way.

I just finished this book after a short hiatus from reading, I absolutely loved it.

The story, whisked me away on a journey of secrets and mystery that have left me stunned as I wait to read the next book.

The ending was very abrupt, and I hate cliffhangers, but I suppose that for a successful series, you can't exactly go solving every mystery in the first book.

I loved the dragon shifting element of the MMC. His broody and feisty nature was just perfect.

The FMC was a feisty little thorn.
I was a bit baffled regarding the birthmark and I'd love to see a art sketch of how it is supposed to look, as I'm picturing strawberry birthmark?
She was a breath of fresh air, and reminded me of another feisty female from one of my most beloved series.

The tension and strained relationships developed in this book, are so deep that I wonder if all can truly be right again? I also wonder if a certain person from the past is still out there..

Now let's get down to negatives, whilst a few grammatical errors, at least in the version of the book I read are present, it's nothing that can't easily be fixed up, and in fact we're not actually a bother for me at all. It's like when your brain identifies a word even spelled incorrectly, and still registers it how it should be, I didn't notice without having to re-read sentences (my husband is King Interrupter when I'm reading an incredible story).
Other than that, I would have liked to see a glossary with the names/places spelled/pronounced to give me a little guide on how to make my brain register the words. I tend to read and then sometimes I will start silently shaping the words on my tongue and losing focus when I read 😂

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm super hyped for the rest of the trilogy. Already started recommending this beaut.

If you like magic, Fae creatures, court intrigue, royal bloodlines, dragons, tension, captive/captor relationship, utterly wounded characters and prophesies then I think you will enjoy this one.

A super sweet 5 stars.
Because I know something sweet is budding on the pages, but time shall tell if it all works out.

I can't wait to read the next book.

I absolutely loved this fun romantasy by Eliza Tilton!

This book was a true enimes to lovers. It is definitely a slow burn with many twists and turns that I honestly didn’t see coming. The characters are both very strong and stubborn, but also have experienced similar trauma and expectation. Neither knowing the others past leaves them hating each other, not knowing how similar they truly are. I loved the banter, and the fights between the main characters as they learn to live with their new realities. This book has many types of interesting magic, multiple races, 3 Pixie sidekicks, interesting creatures, portals to different realms, a dragon shifter fae king, a child of prophecy, a Prophecies union, banter, slow burn romance, the ultamite betrayal, fear and anger, heartbreak, will to enact revenge, and twists that keep you reading.

The main female character Dierdre grew up being told she was special a child of prophecy destined to save the world. That was until her faith in the prophecy wavered, leaving her to move on. She is then forced to fulfill the prophecy and marry the fae king who just so happens to be the killer of her husband. She is thrown into a world she knows little about, trying to figure out who she can trust. But is she trusting the right people? Will she be trick the king by being compliant and run away or kill him if she can? Or will she start to fall for the king she believed to be so cruel? The main male character (Kane, Immortal King of the Fae) despises humans and captures Dierdre and brings her to the Fae castle. But Kane may not be quite the monster everyone believes he is. After they are married, Kane starts to show a different side of himself that most people don't get the opportunity to see.
The cliffhanger leaves us with Dierdre in serious danger, did she make the right choice in trusting the cousin? Who will find her first? And will putting her trust in these individuals be what destroys her? Will the people she hurt and left behind ever forgive her?

Queen of Sorrows by Eliza Tilton is the first book in the enchanting Immortal Fae King series. Received an ARC from Booksprout, and here goes my review.

The book tells the story of Deirdre, a human woman who was born to marry the Deathless One, an immortal fae king named Kane. It was destined by prophecy. But Kane hates her and he takes her to his magical kingdom as a prisoner, not a queen.

The world building is detailed but not overwhelming. The story is full of magical creatures and locations. New characters are introduced gradually. And the history of different kingdoms are elaborated as the story demanded. Eliza maintained a good balance on that part.

The narrative is from both Deirdre’s and Kane’s points of view, and there’s a constant tension between them. Their relationship is really complicated. With ups and downs, pulls and pushes.

Both main characters started off strong. Deirdre is shown as a fierce, determined human heroine with the ability to wield nature as both weapon and shield, twisting thorns and vines to serve her will. Kane also comes up as an evil, cruel fae king, with shadows at his disposal.

But my only issue with Queen of Sorrows is that it turned the FMC into a submissive lady later. Her arc is messy and painful. As this is only the first book of the series, her story might turn out better in the later parts. But in this, she was a damsel in distress. And I didn't like this turn of events.

The story is quite evenly paced. It goes through new developments regularly, and it doesn't seem to drag much. Except for some inner monologues. They do shed some light on the emotions and inner struggles, though.

Perfect for the lovers of fantasy romance. It's presented with a side of dark magic, fae politics and layered characters.

It's not only a romantasy, but a world full of hatred, betrayal and politics. New allies are formed, hidden motives are revealed, and the prophecy that promised peace now seemed to destroy them all.

This book had potential with its fascinating mix of magic systems, creature lore, and the intriguing setup of an immortal male lead and a prophecy already in motion. The world clearly had thought put into it — the variety of magical beings, the atmosphere of the castle, and even the side characters like the pixies and handmaiden added life to the story. It’s right on the edge between too much detail and just enough, but it mostly worked for me.

Unfortunately, that’s where my enthusiasm ended. The main characters lacked chemistry, emotion, and depth. Both the FMC and MMC felt like stereotypes for every enemies-to-lovers fantasy ever written. Their dialogue often came across as stiff and robotic, making it hard to connect with them or care about their growing relationship. The romance — a major selling point for me — felt flat, forced, and completely predictable.

The story had an interesting foundation: the FMC already aware of the prophecy as a child and having lived a life before the events of the book. However, that backstory was barely explored, which left me wanting more depth and context. The worldbuilding, while creative in some areas, stayed surface level, and the magic system was inconsistent at times.

The biggest issue for me was the misleading blurb — it suggests a different setup than what we actually get. Instead of a reluctant arranged marriage scenario, the book starts with the heroine already married, only for her husband to be brutally killed by the fae king on a dare. That shift made it impossible for me to root for the romance that followed.

The ending is abrupt and full of cliffhangers, and while a sequel is planned, I won’t be continuing. Overall, this was a lukewarm slow-burn fantasy with flashes of originality but weak emotional depth and unconvincing romance.

If you’re craving a fantasy that pulls you in from the first page and refuses to let go, Queen of Sorrows by Eliza Tilton is an absolute must-read. Deirdre’s story begins with a prophecy she never asked for, a fate that ties her to Kane, the Deathless Fae King—a man whose charm is as dangerous as his power. From the moment she tries to defy destiny, the story hurtles forward with relentless tension, blending gut-wrenching heartbreak with pulse-pounding action.

Tilton masterfully crafts an enemies-to-lovers romance that feels authentic and deeply emotional. Deirdre is a heroine you can root for—flawed, brave, and torn between survival and desire. Kane, the immortal king, is both terrifying and magnetic, a character whose layers unfold slowly, keeping you guessing whether he’s villain or reluctant ally, or something in between. Their push-and-pull dynamic is electric, with stakes that could shatter worlds and hearts alike.

The book’s world-building is lush and immersive: from the perilous Fae realm to the mystical cave of blessings and the enigmatic unicorn bond, every detail feels alive. The story doesn’t just tell you about magic and intrigue—it makes you live it, gasp for it, and feel the weight of every choice Deirdre makes.

Fans of Uprooted or The Cruel Prince will find themselves completely lost in this story. It’s an intoxicating mix of forbidden love, epic fantasy, and political intrigue, with a slow-burn romance that will leave you desperate for the sequel. Be warned: the cliffhanger is brutal, leaving you both satisfied and aching for what comes next.

Queen of Sorrows is a perfect blend of heartbreak, hope, and high-stakes adventure. It’s a story of love and betrayal, destiny and defiance—and it’s impossible to put down. If you want an enemies-to-lovers fantasy that delivers on every promise, Deirdre and Kane are waiting to captivate you.

Queen of Sorrows is about a girl born with the birthmark of prophecy- a human to wed the fae king and unite the lands. Except she grew up lonely, being told she is ugly and unwanted. When she came of age and the king didn’t show up, she ran away with the man she loved. But life isn’t that easy for the girl of prophecy, and when the king eventually came for her, her world was shattered.

Deirdre’s character development was interesting and believable. She begins fierce and defiant, then her spirits are broken and she begins to build back up while her understanding of her situation keeps changing. She is lost, confused, grieving, and easily manipulated. That last one is unfortunate.

Her villain husband king of the fae Kane is not as evil as she thought as he keeps showing her glimpses of softness and kindness. But he also shows wrath and sudden violence, keeping her scared. Of course, it doesn’t help that he kept her locked away with a magical dampening collar. That really messes with a girly’s mind.

The cousin, who shows kindness and friendship to her right away, might not be her ally after all, but she’s torn about trying to escape and get her freedom by helping this new friend, or trusting the king to be more than her enemy. The decision she makes and then instantly regrets leaves us on a huge cliffhanger and I must know how it continues!

The book was fairly short and an easy read, which I appreciated. But, it felt like a lot of the emotions were missing. I wanted more from each character’s POV chapter to give more insight into what they feel and think, but so far it felt like they were keeping each other and the reader in the dark. There was a lot going on beneath the surface and I wanted to feel more of that.

Solid 3.5 stars though and I am looking forward to reading the next

A Captivating Start to a Dark and Enchanting Saga

Eliza Tilton's "Queen of Sorrows" is a spellbinding debut that plunges you headfirst into a world of treacherous fae, impossible choices, and a slow-burn romance that will leave you breathless. From the very first page, Tilton expertly weaves a tale that feels both familiar in its classic fantasy elements and utterly fresh in its execution.
The story centers on Deirdre, a young woman destined to be the bride of the feared and immortal fae king, Kane. Her desperate flight to escape this fate sets the stage for a gripping and emotional journey. Deirdre is a truly compelling protagonist—fierce, clever, and far from a damsel in distress. Her internal struggle is what makes the book so riveting: she hates her captor, yet she's drawn to him in ways she can't understand.
And then there's Kane, the Deathless One. Tilton avoids making him a one-dimensional villain. Instead, she presents a complex, brooding figure whose motivations are as layered as his ancient secrets. The dual point-of-view chapters are a masterstroke, allowing us to see inside his head and witness the subtle shifts in his demeanor toward Deirdre. This approach builds an incredible amount of tension and emotional depth.
The world-building is rich and atmospheric, painting a vivid picture of the fae realm—both its breathtaking beauty and its sinister undercurrents. The plot is fast-paced and full of satisfying twists that keep you on the edge of your seat. It's the kind of book you'll want to read in one sitting, and its gut-wrenching cliffhanger ending is a perfect hook for the next installment.
If you're a fan of dark fantasy, enemies-to-lovers romance, and intricate worlds populated by compelling characters, "Queen of Sorrows" is an absolute must-read. It’s a powerful and addictive start to what promises to be an epic series.

First of all, I am going to be waiting very impatiently for book 2 of this series now! Eliza, that was such an unfair punishment to leave me in a moment of suspense and excitement. In all seriousness, if you love fantasy heavy, enemy-to-kinda lover-to-I want to kill you books, this is it! The closest book I can say it reminds me of is fearless, but on steroids.

You follow the child of prophecy, Deirdre, who is destined to marry the Deathless One but instead lives a simple life with her husband and animals. Unfortunately for her, destiny comes crashing in one day and she meets the Deathless One, Kane. The book follows these two character and you read their passages through the book. I really enjoy seeing both sides of the story as it really helps you understand what they both were feeling in certain moments.

The book is beautifully written and every chapter will have you reaching for the next. It had me right until the final pages and now there are no more, what I would give for at least 10 more chapters. Trust no one, love no one. That could be the tag line of the book because you don’t know who to trust. Each chapter makes you ache for the characters to love each other, but there is always something that will seemingly pull them away. Until, it doesn’t. Or does it?

I am so happy I found this book because I fell out of reading for a long while and this really made me remember why I loved reading so much. This book takes you into its world and lets you explore with the characters. It doesn’t have an ACOTAR style of writing, if you know what I mean, but it will keep you flipping through the pages because the storyline is actually intriguing. I would highly recommend this book.

Okay. Let's talk.

Deirdre has been hiding with her husband Crispin since she became of age and the prophecy of being the new fae queen of prophecy that'll bring peace because of a star birthmark on her face didn't come true. Kane did not go looking for the human of prophecy because he hates humans due to things that have happened in his life. Due to something you learn later into the book he finally goes and hunts down Deirdre. This is how everything begins.

This is the first book in Eliza's Tilton's The Immortal Fae King series. The nice thing that Eliza does however is focus more on establishing the story with the characters then with descriptions of where they are. You do get a foundation when you go into a new area of what everything looks like but it doesn't feel like your typical World building. This made it easier for Eliza to introduce several characters and move the story forward.

The book ended at a point that is making me chomp at the bit for the next book to come out. So I am very excited to keep an eye out so that I can potentially continue to know what happens to Deirdre and Kane.

This book showed me that there is a right way to do miscommunication. I've come to realize that the miscommunication trope I only dislike in realistic fiction. When it is a fantasy book, sometimes it is a key detail that is necessary.

Keep in mind that this book has fighting, kidnapping, threatening, manipulation, restraints, miscommunication do almost strictly to pride, and betrayal. These are things to be aware of before adding it to your TBR if you do not like them.

We meet our main FMC Deidre, who was born with a special mark. A prophecy told that she was fated to marry the deathless king and would re-unite the human and Fae realms. The only problem is that her future husband never shows up so she comes to the conclusion, that he probably isn't interested and decides to live her own live by running away and live her life with her husband and childhood friend hiding away.

But then the deathless one finds her and, in an effort, to flee, her husband dies, and she is taken to the kingdom of the king, who does not really care about her and locks her away, where she cannot access her magic. The deathless one hates humans, which does not make it easier for both to get along and look forward to a happy marriage. To become the future queen, Deidre must go through a ritual and ends up befriending the unicorn (yep, we got a unicorn :) ) to everybody’s surprise.

When meeting the king’s cousin, he promises to help her getting back her freedom. She takes him up on his offer but starts regretting her decision once she starts getting to know her husband. Maybe he isn't as bad as she initially thought.

I couldn’t put it down and enjoyed the enemies to lover’s plot for once and with it happening slowly and, in a way, that I expected, but also made sense. The side characters had a purpose and made the story more interesting. We even have a proper villain and a story that offers a complex magical world, that I was still able to understand (sometimes I'm not always able to follow long that nicely). I'm looking forward for the next book in the series and was pleasantly surprised that my initial expectation was met.

When I read the description of this book, I debated whether or not I wanted to read it. I decided to give it a try and I am so glad I did. It was such an interesting and good story. It sucked me right in from the very beginning. I had a hard time putting it down. Deirdre thought the prophecy regarding her marrying Kane the fae king, aka the Deathless One, was nonsense, until one day he shows up for her, even though he hates humans. He has to drag her back to her kingdom, because she is stubborn and doesn't want to go with him. The back and forth between the two is quite entertaining. He wants to keep her magic from her, so she can't leave or fight back. She tries to figure out a way to escape. She looks for allies and thinks she may have found one in Gideon. But something fishy is up with that guy. She finds out the prophecy is real, and she is to be the Queen of the fae. Resigned to her fate for now, she begins to spend some time with Kane. She starts to think that maybe he's not so bad. He begins thinking the same thing about this human.
At times I wanted to yell at Deirdre, because she was a bit naive and wanted to trust everyone she met. For me Kane, was such a likeable character, who was given a bad reputation. You have to take the time to get to know him and see him for who he really is. I was bummed when the book ended, and now I wait a bit impatiently for the next one.

- TRUE Enemies to lovers
- Unfulfilled prophecy
- Dragon

If you like true enemies to lovers, like they absolutely DETEST each other, then this is the book for you. I must say, the first few chapters were tough to read and very heartbreaking.

Several prophets made the same prediction - a woman born with a star above her eye will wed the Deathless One and become the new fae queen. When Deidre is born with such a mark, she is sent away to learn to become a good bride. However, when years pass and the Deathless One (Kane) doesn't appear, people begin to lose faith in the prophecy. This allows Deidre to escape along with her lifelong friend turned lover, Crispin. Deidre's grandfather went to great lengths to hide them away by use of a portal. But Deidre and Crispin don't stop training and preparing, just in case Kane appears. Unfortunately, he does.

After dispatching Crispin in a manner that still brings a tear to my eye, Kane takes Deidre to his world. I must say, I despised Kane. I kept hoping that somehow things would work out, that they would come to some accord. But Kane had very little to redeem himself for the majority of the book, in my opinion.

Without giving anything away, we find out more about Kane and his decisions...which didn't make me like him more. But Deidre has some decisions to make as well. And we have to find out more about them in book 2.

I think this story has a lot of potential, but for some reason,it just didn't land well for me. Which is weird, because I usually love any fantasy with fae, vague prophecies, tricky bargains and enemies to lovers.
I think the major issue is the enemies to lovers trope isn't really landing for me. Yes, they start out enemies. In fact, the first few chapters were really dramatic, and the best part of the book for me. But, they didn't stay enemies very long, and by the halfway point, it felt like the MC's were trying a little too hard to convince themselves, and me, that they still totally hated each other.
I liked nearly all the characters. Kane was pretty cool, and the pixies were hilarious!
Deirdre started out awesome and super powerful, and then became kinda powerless and weak. Yes, I know that part of that was due to *spoiler thing*, but even after that was no longer present, it still felt like she just gave up and did nothing to fight back, which didn't seem to match her character at the beginning of the story.
Overall, it's a decent story, and I think there's lot of potential for the rest of the series, and I think I will at least read book 2.
But, if you are a stickler for a "true enemies to lovers", this may not be for you. If you just want some general enemy vibes before the MC's notice that the other person is hot, you may enjoy this.

I love reading novels by Eliza Tilton so diving into Queen of Sorrows and loving it wasn't unexpected, however how this story develops was unexpected. The blurb gave us an eagerness to learn all we can about this story. An arranged marriage where he kills his betrothed wife's husband, this gave me the enemies to lovers tropes to the extreme and I was eager to find out how this happened - this is become clear as I delved into the storyline. The writing in this novel is great, it really gives us the descriptions and the lavishness to create a vision of the world in our minds as we read. This novel was great and the developments were fantastic. The events that played out had me gripped and I was eagerly awaiting for what would come next. The characters are all fleshed out really well and they all play off each other very well. Deidre was a great main character, I loved her strength, the blind faith she had and the automatic empathy of wrong doing... Her emotions played out really well. Kane was equally as great as the Fae King, I loved how he has all different sides to him and you could see them all battling to come out. I really think we'll get to see more of these in the next book.
Speaking of which, the way this ended was perfect, really opened up for book 2 and I can't wait to see this world and our chatacters develop more.

If you're drawn to fantasy novels brimming with rich world-building, complex characters, and a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance, Queen of Sorrows is a must-read.

Deirdre, the human child of prophecy, is fated to marry the Deathless One, the immortal Fae king, to unite the human and Fae realms. However, when he fails to claim her, she marries her best friend and lives a peaceful life—until the Fae king arrives, kills her husband, and takes her away. Trapped in the Fae realm, Deirdre must navigate a world of magic, betrayal, and her growing feelings for the very king she despises.

Eliza Tilton masterfully crafts a tale filled with intrigue, magic, and emotional depth. The dual POVs provide insight into both Deirdre's and Kane's perspectives, adding layers to their complex relationship. The world-building is immersive, with elements like mischievous pixies and a unique magic system that enrich the story.

The romance is slow-burn and filled with tension, making every interaction between Deirdre and Kane compelling. Their evolving relationship keeps readers on edge, eager to see how their story unfolds.

Queen of Sorrows is a captivating start to a series that promises more twists, turns, and emotional highs. Fans of epic fantasy and romantic tension will find much to enjoy here.
