This book had be HOOKED i devoured this story! This was such a unique concept for a story,
Azalea's inner dialog was very dark but could be so relatable, also, the deadpan humor she has was the best😂 the writing and storyline is so good and easy to read, and the magic system is fantastic! I love reading about magical schools in other worlds!

Azelea, Jaymes, Shayde...their dynamic had me PANTING🥵🥵🥵 good lord! Could cut that tension with a knife!

And the ending?!? Left off on a massive cliffhanger and now I am desperate for the next book!!😫 I will definitely be stalking this Author for more stories!

Semi-Spoilers ahead mentioning characters relationships…

This book hooked me from the very first chapter and didn’t let go until the end! The female main character is so relatable, especially as she navigates her own battles with darkness and mental health. Her inner journey is raw and authentic, mirroring a lot of my own experiences with grappling to make sense of life’s struggles. There’s something powerful in her determination to completely reinvent her life, as if reaching out for a hope that feels just beyond her grasp. It’s a reminder that sometimes, even when it feels impossible, that inner strength and perseverance is worth the fight.

This is my first trip into dark academia, and I am honestly blown away. I usually immerse myself in fantasy with dragons and fae, but this book has opened a door to a new genre I never knew I needed in my life. The haunting setting, the complexity of the characters, and the intense psychological themes give it a depth that’s so refreshing and different. It was a treat to discover a whole new side of fiction that combines mystery, emotional intensity, and a darker vibe that kept me enthralled.

The twists and turns kept me on the edge of my seat. I found myself so engrossed that I devoured the whole story in just two sittings, unable to put it down. Every chapter brought a new layer of suspense, making me both excited and anxious to see what would happen next. Few books have managed to keep me this captivated!

One of my favorite aspects was the relationship between Azalea and Shayde. It’s this unique blend of darkness and purity that has you rooting for them, even with all their flaws. There’s a sense of intensity in their connection that’s so rare to find. And the way they have accepted each other’s “darkness” makes you feel something warm and fuzzy inside. But will they be each other’s saviours in the end? Can I just mention as well the spice between these 2 is also super hot. I need me a Shayde daddy 🥵 But, I have to admit, I’m curious—and even hopeful—that we’ll see more between Azalea and Jaymes. There’s just something about their dynamic that feels unfinished, as if their story is only just beginning.

Azalea’s journey so far has been powerful to witness, and I have this feeling she’s gearing up to kick some serious Grim arse for her best friend. I’m holding out hope that she’ll succeed in the end because I can’t bear the thought of my heart breaking again! Her strength and loyalty make her an unforgettable character, and I can’t wait to see where her path leads next.

I’m thrilled to have been part of the ARC team for this book. Thank you, M.N. Lash, for letting me join this incredible journey! Being able to read this early was such an honor, although it’s bittersweet—I now have to wait even longer than most readers for the next book! The anticipation is real, and I’m counting down until I can dive back into this world.

Thank you for the ARC!

I would like to start by saying I loved the way this book began. I loved Draxmere Academy and the world building. However, this book ended up not being for me. I think that it relied too heavily on tropes and that the relationships between the FMC and MMC were not fleshed out very well.

I will say the plot twist and cliffhanger at the end of this book were very good and I think that the next book will be better than the first as the plot is set up very well.

This book is perfect for people that like Zodiac Academy!

This is an ARC review...

“When there is little hope, a girl will rise. A hero, a savior, a prophet; she’ll hold both light and dark inside.”

A unique story of magical powers, shifters, life or death, dark and light, growth, evil, love and lust, and so much more that will leave you on the edge of your seat!

This story takes you into a world of magic and a mysterious academy in an alternate world where people wield all sorts of magic, from controlling the elements or the light or dark, to being able to shift into werewolves and vampires. Azalea has spent her entire life in the human world, unable to feel emotions and watching those around her perish because of her curse. With dead parents and a dead husband, she lives a lonely, uneventful life. It isn't until she gets pulled through a magic mirror that she learns of this other world and her place in it. It is here she must find her power, learn how to use it, learn more about her curse, and learn how to feel again. Not everything or everyone here though is what it seems. She must learn who to trust and stay alive in the process as evil lurks in the mysterious Grim, an ancient evil that turns beings into reapers, evil creatures who look to be like those around them but are murderous beasts.

I loved loved loved the world building in this book. It was so unique to the story. I loved the dark academia vibes throughout the story. It was intriguing how their was a mirrored world full of magic unbeknown to the humans in their world. I also loved how there were two factions basically, the light and the dark, and I loved how many different powers or abilities everyone could have. It made everyone unique and interesting.

I also loved all of the prophecies at the beginning of the chapters they helped to give a view of what was to come. They were very unique to the story and the building

Azalea:
She is such a complex character that goes through so much growth and development in this story. She worked through and learned so much even in the short amount of time she was at the academy. I also loved seeing all the new relationships she built, whether it be friendship or romantic. I also loved how the author described her regaining her emotions throughout the story. I really enjoyed her character and think she is a great example of a solid FMC.

Shayde:
Oh my Lord where do I even begin with Shayde?! All the shadow daddy vibes he gives are to die for. He is beyond obsessed with Azalea and his words make you weak at the knees. He is hot hot hot. He's so overly protective and has those touch her and die vibes. He, like Azalea, is also such a complex character and full of mystery. I need to know more about him and what will happen with him!

The side characters are amazingly built and placed throughout the story. I adore Demi, Azalea's best friend. She's everything you want in a best friend. And the mysterious grave diggers keep you on your toes. I loved learning about everyone's different powers and how they use them. And the battles with the reapers were amazingly hectic and had me on the edge of my seat.

I don't want to spoil much but the romance and smut in this book was on point! So many amazing scenes and build up scenes and quotes. I loved the progression and the possessive and obsessive nature of the FMC's relationship. So many great dark romance tropes can be seen in this book and they hit all the right spots.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and am very excited to read the next one. I will be not so patiently waiting. I hightly recommend reading this book if you love dark romantasy and dark academia vibes!

Quotes from the book:

─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☽ .* :☆゚. ───

Prophecies:

• “Among the humans, a savior will live, safe and sound with all four limbs. But in her heart she cannot feel, only Conjuring can help her heal.”

• "In her darkest hours, she’ll crave a sinner, a monster, a digger’s grave.”

• “There will be no end to the Reapers until the reaping comes to an end. There will be no way to survive until a savior learns to live.”

• “If you find yourself being tempted by the Grim’s offers, do not cave. Once you are turned into a Reaper, there is no going back. There is no known cure."

Quotes:

• I was never going to be happy with anything in life if I wasn’t happy with myself.

• I want to feel. Even if all I get is pain. Pain is better than the emptiness.

• “You’re a nightmare wrapped in the prettiest package, Azalea Jinx.”

• “You want obsession? You already have it. I am beyond the point of obsession, Azalea Jinx. You occupy my every thought, fill up all of the dark and empty spots in my heart with your light. I look for you in every corner and hope for your presence in every dream. I am full of this constant, aching need for you, even though I know you don’t feel the same way. The things that I would do for you, to you, over this crazed obsession is madness. Pure madness and nothing more.”

• “I want your obsession, your madness, your infatuation.”

• "This is rule three: If anyone ever puts their hands on what’s mine, I kill them."

• "You have no idea what kind of monster I really am, Azalea. I’m out of control when I am with you. I am so close to losing myself, to becoming something I never want you to see. A liar, a thief, a murderer, a villain. I’d do it all for you. No second thoughts, no doubts. Only this burning insanity connecting us.”

Azalea Jinx is cursed. Anytime anyone gets close to her, they die. This leads Azalea to isolate and become numb but that all changes when she’s pulled through a portal into a magical world. Suddenly she’s bombarded with information and told she’s the chosen one. Can Azalea repair her emotions or is she stuck being unfeeling forever? Can she live up to the expectations thrust upon her?

Holy crap!! This book was such an info dump at the beginning but the minute it picked up - it took off running. I loved watching Azalea discover her power and really dive deep into her lack of emotions! I had my predictions for this book and while I guessed a few things, there were some twists I wasn’t expecting. The cliff hanger?!? How am I supposed to wait for the next book? I loved how snarky Azzie was but you could see her start to thaw and develop feelings for those who proved themselves worthy. I can’t wait to see how things progress!

Thank you to M.N. Lash for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest opinion!!

I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest review.

EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!!! At one point I was sobbing then the next minute my flabbers were gasted. I truly enjoyed this book from start to finish but it tore my poor little heart to pieces. For awhile I thought it was going to turn “why choose” with a sprinkle of bully romance but it makes more sense that it didn’t. Azalea was so relatable for me and I loved seeing her growth! The magic system was so unique and I love the magical school for adults concept. This book does end on a cliffhanger and I look forward to book two!!

Beta & Arc. Will come back to complete review

Update: I can’t believe I forgot to update this with my review because this was a fantastic read. Azalea Jinx is a badass FMC who doesn’t even know the extent of her powers until she is forced into another world. Enter Draxmere Academy, thee Shayde Glover (*swoon) and Jaymes Bloodgood. These guys are best friends, fawn over her and can’t be more opposite from one another. There is action, spice, banter, magic, all the things that make a great dark romantasy and I ate it up! Can’t wait for book 2! Coming soon!

This was my first book by M. N. Lash and I was hooked within the first few chapters of this dark academia tale with Harry Potter meets Shadow & Bone vibes. Lash’s writing was richly detailed in her descriptions of the haunting setting, the complexity of characters and magic system, as well as the political unrest; creating an enthralling reading experience.

Azalea Jinx is a twenty-two-year-old widow who is desperate to feel a wide range of emotions that used to be within her grasp. Only being able to feel emotions with a negative connotation or nothing at all, has left Azalea feeling empty and grappling to understand the darkness swirling inside her amidst life’s struggles.

Always searching for anything to make her feel, while out thrifting, Azalea is drawn to a mysterious mirror and immediately brings it home. The mirror insights feelings of unease and being watched, and like numerous other odd occurrences, plagues her dreams at night. To rid herself of the nightmares, Azalea etches the dreams onto her skin, unknowingly creating tattooed links to something beyond her understanding.

Azalea’s world is shaken when she is kidnapped through the mirror and given the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to regain her emotions. The only catch? Azalea has to join Draxmere Academy of Conjuring, an elite school where the sole goal is to train its students to excel in their magic for battle against evil creatures created by the centuries-old Grim who plagues both the Conjuring and human worlds.

Desperate for the chance to feel, Azalea accepts her invitation to Draxmere where she uncovers information about her past, discovers powers she didn’t know she had, and is confronted with evil in ways she could’ve never imagined.

When Azalea’s powers surface, she finds out that she is prophesied as the chosen one to save both worlds — or doom them. Azalea’s journey isn’t easy, as control of her powers isn’t something that readily occurs. Along the way, Azalea builds new friends and a relationship with one of the most mysterious and powerful Conjurers in the school: Shayde. The relationship between Azalea and Shayde is centered around accepting each other’s darkness; like recognizes like after all. Will these two be each other’s savior or will they destroy one another when their secrets come to light?

A few plot points were predictable and we are left with a major cliffhanger (which I'm okay with, just an FYI), but that didn’t detract from this being an enjoyable read and I am invested in seeing where this series is headed!

I knew that I would adore Conjuring a Grim as soon as I read, “I insult Florida quite often in the first few chapters…” Humor is not its sole virtue, though. M.N. Lash’s first book in the Draxmere Academy of Conjuring series has also got teeth (literal and figurative), steam, gore, and tops it all off with a fresh and unique journey of self-discovery and healing for FMC Azalea Jinx. She’s inked, assertive, morally gray, and is the only one allowed in the driver’s seat of her own narrative, but she’s also apathetic and lacks a guiding sense of principles that even the grayest characters have.

There’s nothing that earns my lifelong loyalty like an author who makes things make sense. Lash makes sure to leave the reader a trail of breadcrumbs to explain what made Azalea Jinx the gorgeous, stabby unicorn that she presents on the pages, The level of Azalea’s numbness and emotional distance defies the believable, so as soon as Chapter One begins, Lash starts to show readers peeks into Azalea’s history that took me aback and made me think, “Damn. I’d have withered stumps for feelings too.”

I could write a dissertation on Azalea Jinx as a character, but a badass FMC isn’t all that Conjuring a Grim brings to the table. Lash includes small, insightful tidbits such as a two-party system whose rivalry is fracturing the world. (Sound familiar, America?) Aside from these little Easter eggs of social commentary, the writing is phenomenal. There’s a lot of exposition, but by the halfway mark I had to be physically wrested from my Kindle to engage in normal things like food…sleep…childcare. The sex scenes left a little to be desired, though. If they had been closed-door scenes it wouldn’t have affected the quality of the novel at all, but the existing scenes felt very in-and-out and weren’t satisfying.

Regardless of the absence of foreplay, I highly recommend Conjuring a Grim to anyone who loves dark academia, morally gray MCs, Touch Her and Die, and a best friend who is too good for this world. The world has motifs very similar to those of the live-action Winx series on Netflix. While you go preorder it for its release date– 11/22/24– I’ll just be here waiting not-so-patiently for the second installment of the series!

📚 ARC Review - Conjuring A Grim | M.N. Lash | 4.5/5 star rating ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

I enjoyed this book so much! The vibes of this book gave a fun mixture of a dark Harry Potter x Shadow & Bone x Fourth Wing x Wednesday concoction, as the dark academia theme was played out brilliantly with such a compelling plot being laid out. I would say that the romance in this was the main takeaway due to the depth of emotion and personal experience brought through in the writing that takes you on the journey right alongside the FMC.

I loved the magic system in play and the power struggle constantly at the background of everything. The book features a compelling cast of characters and you can’t help but imagine yourself amongst them wondering what powers you too might have. It was also quite refreshing to read about students with ages ranging around 22-25 instead of your typical teenagers. Given that they are all (young and impassioned) adults, the spice was well placed throughout and the pacing of the book read very enjoyably. I found the FMC Azalea to be very relatable in her thoughts and struggles, as she battles with guilt and numbness whilst blaming herself over situations outside of her control - something I think we have all experienced. Following her journey, you can’t help but want to reach through the page and help her see straight as she seemly becomes intoxicated and somewhat naive to the whole new world in which she is thrown into. I appreciated that both the FMC and MMC genuinely come across as morally grey, leaving their futures uncertain and actions unpredictable to say the least! The plot was exciting and the twists were well executed.

This was such an enjoyable read that I couldn’t put the book down and found myself feeling all the emotions as I devoured it and now wait rather impatiently for the next instalment. A blend of relatability, darkness and well-timed comedy makes this a read definitely worth your time.

Thank you to M.N. Lash for giving me the opportunity to give an advance review on this book. If you’re a fan of dark academia romances in a world balanced by light and shadows then I cant think of a better book for you to pick up!

~“You deserve the world, little flower, and I can’t give it to you. I’m not the hero in your story…”~

This book truly hooked me around the halfway mark. Although it started off a bit slow, once the pace picked up, I couldn’t put it down. The ending was fantastic, even with a cliffhanger! The writing is richly detailed, bringing each scene to life, and the romantic elements add spice without going overboard. While a few plot points were a bit predictable, I still really enjoyed the story and am excited to dive into the next book in the series to see what happens next.

Azalea Jinx lives under a curse: everything she loves—or even thinks she loves—disappears. After the recent events of becoming a widow, she feels empty, numb to everything, even physical sensations. & the dreams that haunt her become etched onto her skin, a search for some relief or feeling... yet these tattoos link her to something beyond her understanding, something on the verge of being revealed...

When she acquires a mysterious mirror, her carefully controlled world is shaken. She senses something strange about it, almost like someone is watching her through it—eyes that seem oddly familiar. She wonders if she’s just imagining it, but that question is quickly answered when she’s suddenly kidnapped through the mirror and transported to Draxmere Academy, a dark and magnificent school. There, she uncovers secrets about her past, discovers powers she never knew she had, and meets creatures beyond anything she could have imagined. It almost seems like a twisted joke.

Now, Azalea is told she could be the one to save this world—or doom it. She must decide whether to remain in this strange new place or return to her old life. Will the Seer’s prophecies come true? Can love and desire break her curse? Or will she end up destroying both worlds…

Conjuring a Grim is the first book in an intriguing new series that blends mystery, dark academia, and a dash of gothic charm. If you enjoy stories with a Wednesday Addams vibe, you'll likely find this one captivating.

The story follows 22-year-old Azalea Jinx, a young woman who has always felt out of place. She’s unable to experience true happiness, often feeling only fleeting moments of joy that quickly dissolve into emptiness. Everything changes when Azalea buys an antique mirror at a thrift store, feeling a strange pull toward it. Unbeknownst to her, this mirror is a gateway to Draxmere Academy, a mysterious and dangerous world she never could have imagined.

Azalea is unexpectedly pulled into this new world when a hand emerges from the mirror and drags her into Draxmere Academy, where she must navigate not only the academy’s secrets but her own emotional awakening. At first emotionally distant and closed off, Azalea begins to grow as a person, and the longer she stays at the academy, the more her feelings start to surface. She forms friendships, especially with a group of elite male fighters she's warned to stay away from—but Azalea, true to her nature, does the opposite.

The book weaves in a prophecy surrounding Azalea, where she holds the fate of both worlds in her hands—she can either save or destroy everyone. As the story unfolds, there are twists, betrayals, and secrets, including the true identity of The Grim and his sinister motives for turning people into his minions. With its engaging characters and a plot full of surprises, the book keeps you on the edge of your seat, especially with a major cliffhanger that leaves you eager for the next book. Azalea’s emotional growth and the shifting dynamics at the academy make this series one to watch. I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes in the next installment!

First things first; the ending was absolutely astonishing! I find myself in desperate need of the second book, as if it were essential to my very existence. Shayde can do no wrong in my eyes, and I firmly believe that everything he has done, is doing, or will do, is driven by love and should be forgiven. He embodies the self-deprecating, morally ambiguous male lead who is obsessively possessive of Azalea. Azalea, in her early twenties, with her vibrant hair, facial piercings, tattoos covering her body, and curvy figure, is kidnapped from the human world to a realm that believes her to be their savior. Narrated from Azalea's first-person perspective, we gain an intimate view of her experiences as the "chosen one."

I connected deeply with the main characters, and the writing was so captivating that I read the entire book in one sitting. While the twist was somewhat predictable, the surrounding elements more than compensated for it. Even though I anticipated it, the ending still left me breathless. This series has the potential to be my favorite of the year. I am thoroughly hooked.

Are. You. Joking.

Lash has done it again with the cliffhangers. I am foaming at the mouth in anticipation for the next book! I need to know what happens next!!!

This book was so good! It brought similarities of other books with the academy aspect but made it so insanely unique with the abilities the characters could possess, along with the magic system as a whole and world building! Conjuring a Grim is full of twists and turns and the plot progressed at a great pace.

I loved how Azalea grew as a character while still maintaining her initial sense of self. I also appreciated that while we had the chosen one trope in this book, it didnt come with instant perfect powers and she had to learn and work on it. Even by the end her performance of her powers wasn’t perfect and I really liked that.

Azalea’s journey of discovering her emotions again was displayed well throughout the book as she developed feelings for Shayde and welcomed Demi’s love. I’m not sure if this was intentional but I liked how she seemed to use less logic and reasoning as she tuned more into her emotions and felt more. Like girl, please be afraid of the monster!!!

After that ending? I need to see what happens next. I need more Demi… and Jaymes.

Pretty much I just need book two.

Spice but not spicy!

In Conjuring a Grim, we meet a lonely mortal who believes she’s cursed and, in search of a fresh start, moves away from her hometown. But as her life falls into the same unremarkable routine, a mysterious mirror at a thrift store catches her eye, almost calling to her. The mirror, oddly enough, mirrors one of her tattoos, as though it were meant for her. Little does she know, it’s a portal to her true destiny—the Charmed realm—where she’s whisked away and told she is this realm’s savior. To fulfill her purpose, she enrolls at the most prestigious academy in the land, training to defeat reapers and protect the realms.

This dark academia story offers a compelling journey of self-discovery as our heroine learns to embrace her power and emotions in a new reality. I found the main character’s struggle with dissociation relatable and refreshing, and while the pacing started a bit slowly for me, the conflict quickly drew me in. The romance adds intensity, with a possessive and magnetic male love interest. Though the relationship developed swiftly, I still enjoyed the tension it brought to the plot. And the cliffhanger, along with a shocking betrayal, left me craving the next installment in the series!

The story follows Azalea Jinx, recently widowed, on her journey to find out who she is.

After the death of her husband, Azalea is alone. She moves to Florida in hopes of starting a new life. When she is kidnapped by an unknown man in a mirror she purchased from an antique store, the life she knew previously ceases to exist.

Instead, she is taken to Draxmere Academy of Conjuring—in a world of inherent danger but one touched by magic. It is there she learns a bit more about her parents and discovers that they attended the same school. With her newfound knowledge, previous events in her life begin to make sense, as she discovers that she too has powers.

As Azalea learns and trains at the Academy, enemies will become lovers and friends will become foes. When a mysterious threat, comes to Draxmere, will Azalea be able to use her powers to save her friends and herself?

Overall I thought this book was good. I do think it was a bit similar to other dark academia novels (not just genre but plot points). The relationship between FMC and MMC left something to be desired in my opinion, but maybe that’s just me. It seems like book two will be a bit better as it is set up well for a sequel.

Thanks to the author for the ARC!

Rating: 5⭐️
Spice: 2🌶

Format: E-book 📱

Favorite Quote: “Maybe I need to be destroyed.”

This book is devastating. Absolutely devastating. Heart wrenching. Heart breaking. Beautiful. Messed up.

The ups and downs and turnarounds I felt reading this had me seriously unhinged.

To begin, I absolutely adored Azalea. Her feelings (or lack thereof), her foul language (her first conversation with Delarosa cracked me up) and her coming to terms with herself and the new situation she found herself in.

I'm going to admit I'm not team Shayde. From the start I just had an off feeling about him. At first I will admit it was due to bias because I love Jaymes and I am strictly team Jaymes. At one point in time I was living in a delululand where they would all be together.

Then circumstances changed, I still don't like Shayde, I don't trust Shayde (with good reason) and I don't want Azalea to be with Shayde. I think because of this I started to dislike Azalea and I didn't like her all the way to the end. I still don't like her.

I really reeeeeallly need book 2 because wow. Seriously wow this can't end the way it did!! I need to know what happens next!

Conjuring A Grim is a dark academia romance full of high stakes, action, magic, secrets, betrayal, and morally grey characters!
We follow Azalea Jinx, a 22 year old widow living in Florida. Azalea has gone through life losing anyone close to her, and as a result, Azalea has lost all emotions. Azalea finds herself just going through the motions of daily life, until one day she is kidnapped by a handsome green-eyed stranger, who takes her to the mirror-world. A world of magical beings. Azalea is invited to enrole at the Draxmere Academy Of Conjuring, where she is told she will get the chance to regain her emotions and find out who she really is and who she is destined to be.
Accepting leads to not only gaining back Azalea's emotions but also meeting the most beautiful man she's ever seen and a darkness that calls to her. Shayde is a powerful conjurer with dark powers and even darker secrets that ultimately changes everything!
I really enjoyed this first instalment in this series, The characters, magic, and storyline are intriguing and fun, and I loved the dark academy setting. A fantastic start to the series.

I liked this book and will definitely be reading the next one. My rating falls somewhere between 3.5 and 4 stars, so I’ve rounded up to the 4 star rating.

I loved the dark academia vibes and the tension throughout. I felt some of the relationships developed quickly, but in the end I was bought into each of them regardless of that fact. The FMC is 22 years old, and often felt like she came across much younger. I loved her mental health rep and would’ve liked to explore that a bit deeper, but I’m wondering if that will be fleshed out more in book 2.

I never got bored with this book and was interested in what happened next the whole way through. Some of the plot twists were predictable, but what happened after each revelation made up for it.

I’m here for a good cliffhanger, and this one (two?) was really well done. It made me instantly want to read more.

Just me over here PRAYING that Azaela goes to the dark side…😏😈

If you like gothic dark academia settings, light vs. dark, morally gray, obsessive, found family vibes, then this book is right up your alley.

Actual review: 4.5 stars!

“Conjuring A Grim” is a dark academia fantasy novel that follows a main character who can no longer feel. She has gone through life, not feeling like she belongs, and slowly losing all emotions. Little does she know, her whole life is about to be flipped upside down.

This book was absolutely amazing! The world building was great, and while it was a lot of information at once, it was easy to understand! I felt that the characters where easily loveable. Some of my favorite parts included all of their playful banter! Additionally, one of the characters has almost the exact same eyes as me?!? That was incredibly cool to read about.

I did guess the plot twist, so I did knock it to 4.5 stars. However, it did not make the ending any easier. This poor girl can not catch a break.

If you love dark academia, some spicy scenes, playful banter, and a possessive love interest, this book is for you!

That ending left my heart hurting.

Azalea actually had me laughing out loud in the beginning with all the F bombs after being dragged through a mirror and ending up in a different world with all kinds of “magic” (charms) and people who conjur. I fell like her outer monologue is exactly what we’d all be thinking 😂

I love watching her character growth as she learns her powers and her emotions slowly come back. The gravediggers are fascinating and I hope to learn more about Arlo and Nox in the coming books and see more between Jaymes and Azalea.

And where to begin on Shayde… I love him to death, ugh this hurts. HAHA I can’t wait to see where this goes and I’m definitely rooting for him and Azalea and for Shayde to make hopefully much better choices. I will enjoy his psychotic stage very much though 🫣

I received this as an ARC and I’m dying for book two!

I really enjoyed this book! I’m a sucker for dark academia and this didn’t disappoint. But like, for real though…why can’t some random hot dude pull me through a mirror portal into a magical academy and find out I have immense power? Goals.

This is book one of the Draxmere Academy series. It follows along with Azalea Jinx and her new found friends in an unknown territory that is threatening at every turn. Just wait until you meet her best friend, Demi. Yeah, also goals. Azalea will do anything just to feel something. Will she heed the warnings or will she find out the hard way? Read it to find out!!

I could say so much more but I want to keep this as spoiler free as possible!

What to expect:
✨light and shadow factions
✨elementalists
✨vampires
✨shifters
✨dark academia
✨secret identities
✨betrayal
✨possessive MMC
✨badass FMC and her best friend

This was a story different from anything I have read so far. It had aspects of other stories I have read, but it was very different. The world is a lot like ours, but not. Demi was a fun character and I enjoyed her so much. I loved Shayde and I also like Jaymes. Azalea was a great FMC, she has a lot of struggles and personal demons she battles. This was a lot like Harry Potter and Shadow and Bone mixed, it was a good fantasy romance with some magic. The story has some twists and turns. There are some dark notes for people who might be sensitive to talk about miscarriages or struggles with fertility, so take that into consideration as you read. The author did a good job at how they handled a topic that is hard for many. This book left off in a way that is not such a cliffhanger that I was mad, but enough of one that I am eager to know what happens.

We meet the 22 year old FMC, who has been in the human world, who believes she is curse. Those close to her always died, recently her soon to be ex-husband, which makes her a widower.

She struggles with feeling anything at all. Trying to find anything to fill the void, she comes across a mirror while thrifting. The mirror soon pulls her into a world of paranormal and magic. Now, imagine if you got your Hogwarts letter at 22 after being in the human world and have no emotions?

The author weaves a telling tale of this new world, and not only do we have a morally grey FMC but a morally grey MMC and some morally grey supporting cast. This was a great book one into what I believe is a trilogy. It's a learning to live again story with devious plot twists that was so delicious.

Thank you, @m.n._lash for this amazing ARC!

I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have received an advanced copy of Conjuring A Grim from the author! 🫶

3.5 stars - Conjuring A Grim is a solid debut novel that was a really fun read! 🥹💕 I devoured this story within 48 hours and it brought me on such a wild rollercoaster ride of emotions! 🙀😤😢😍 I love Draxmere Academy and it was really fun to be in the FMC’s mindset because she is a total mystery and it was great to hear her insight. The FMC’s roommate is my absolute favorite character in the book and I just love her so much. I do wish that there was more between the FMC and the MMC because I didn’t really feel the connection between them that much. However, the world building and writing style was amazing!

If you love Harry Potter vibes, be sure to pick it up and read! 🫶

This dark academia romance was my first read by MN LASH and I really enjoyed it! I liked her writing style/voice and the way the dark humor came out authentically through her characters.

There was a good amount of worldbuilding to read through, but it was all really necessary to set the haunting backdrop of this story. My favorite part was learning things about Azalea’s past that gave Intimate Insight Into her as a person, and watching her growth as she learned to use her powers at Draxmere...plus the banter between characters was top notch!

I really liked how many different mystical elements were Included In the story and learning how all of them fit together...especially since the characters were older, but attending draxmere academy!

I am looking forward to the second book after that cliffhanger ending!!
