What does it take to go through life when you grow up in a large institution with no love, abuse, and neglect; never learning to read or write. Then one day you meet someone who helps you fulfill the dreams you had while growing up in the institution. A guide and "guardian angel" who teaches you, protects you, and shares his life with you. The dreams made possible included home ownership and all its complexities. Developing an exhibit to teach children about mental disabilities; being honored in the White House, on national TV, and the stage of the Grand Ol Opry. Finally finding a spiritual awakening that had lain dormant throughout Richard's life. It's a story of friendship, love, and 44 years of brotherhood.
“A captivating story with lots of emotions that touched me indeed. It is the story of Richard, a person with intellectual disabilities, who with the support of his friend of 45 years, Manfred, has overcome many barriers, systemic problems, prejudice, and financial hardships. This story is also about true friendship forged through persistency and patience, in the context when one person has real difficulties and challenges understanding this complex world. Over many decades, Manfred has guided Richard’s advocacy to reduce the stigma of mental disabilities, and now supports his efforts to be a witness for God.”
This book is so thoughtful, so sincere. It truly felt like I was sitting down with Tatzmann at a coffee shop and hearing this story of profound companionship. My personal favorite part was hearing about Richard’s stubborn determination throughout; particularly when he sold buttons to fundraise for his cause. I feel I am old friends with both Tatzmann and Richard after reading this.
I had the pleasure of meeting Tatzmann at the Book Fair for Grown-Ups in Minneapolis and purchased a signed copy of this book. His passion truly shined and it was an honor to chat with him. I will be reading “Helix of Fate and Love” in the future!
I met the author at a book fair in MN & he seriously could not have been a nicer guy. His eyes lit up talking about his books & it was incredibly evident just how much he truly cares.
This books was a great story about mental health, disabilities, being a good friend & not being afraid to learn about those who are different from us. Richard is such a great example, leading with kindness and sincerity & wanting to help others through his story.
I look forward to reading Manfred’s other book & any others he may write in the future!
