Dark Needs: A Masked Man Dark Romance

Rate this book
Why were masked men so hot?

On a chilly fall night, Makenzie Cameron is surrounded by monsters on the spook trail where she works. Dressed as the Bride of Frankenstein, Kenzie thought she knew what it meant to fill a spark—until a menacing scarecrow with a knife steps outs of the darkness. When he orders her to kneel, she realizes she’ll do anything for the electrifying thrill of his touch.

Revenge was his only goal…until he met her.

Travis Weber was broken and pieced back together—a monster of a man. His hatred festered with every glimpse of the marks left by those who abandoned him. Yet, despite her painted-on scars, Kenzie’s beautiful soul rekindled something inside him which he believed to be dead, and he was ready to sacrifice everything for her.

Be careful what you wish for.

When Travis disappears, Kenzie is left with more questions than answers. Determined to start anew, she moves to a different city, but she can't shake the feeling that someone is watching her. Her fears intensify at the Hallowmas Masquerade Ball, where she once again falls under the spell of a mysterious masked man. This time, will he thrill her… or kill her?

Dark Needs is a dark romantic horror reimagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein with a morally gray male lead. Some themes may be disturbing to some readers. Fans of Nikki St. Crowe, Tylor Paige, Sheridan Anne, and Navessa Allen will love this dark debut from C. Cyan.

“He slammed into her pussy so fast and so hard, she was sure she’d be bleeding from the force of it before he was done.” Umm…

Well the author leaned hard into writing a filthy story, but that’s really the only positive thing I can say. This reads like bad porn written by one of those guys who can’t understand why bitches won’t sleep with him (can’t say I’ve ever seen “titty” used seriously before). I mean, the premise is hot but the writing is soooo juvenile. I am not sure what kind of crazy low expectations people had to be rating this four and five stars.

I absolutely loved this dark romance reimagining of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein! The characters are well written and make you feel for them. The MMC Travis is brutally broken but loves Kenzie wholeheartedly and deeply. His love for her is beautiful and captivating. I love a man who is obsessed and takes care of his woman. Kenzie is a relatable, strong FMC with a big heart and a love for masked men. The spice is hot too.

The ending is perfection. I am definitely interested in reading more from this author.

Ghastly, juvenile writing and an insufferable, dumb, horny all the time, vulgar heroine with no personality.

There is absolutely no tension or build up because this girl, desperately wanting her classmate Justin, is too horny not to notice that the man (ML), who is taller, bigger, and has a different eye color than him, she’s throwing herself at isn’t him. So, she bangs the wrong guy who happens to be the ML.

She’s one smart cookie🤨

It’s the little things:

“Just thinking about him sent a puddle to her pussy” (ch. 1). Sent a puddle? Like a whole ass puddle was sent from her glands to her vagina? Nice. Also, why is this bish getting turned on like every five seconds from absolutely nothing? She should get that checked out.

“He filled her pussy with cum as he shot load after load inside her” (ch.4). Bro has multiple loads to blow at once…

✨Impressive✨

Also, was it necessary to have him recall being hard at 12? Major ick.

Also… ALSO… I’m nitpicking here, but “A tall African American guy?” How about a tall, dark-skinned man?

Good fooking grief.

Can I please give this more than 5 stars? Like omfg I absolutely loved this book. I told my husband as soon as I have money and can buy it I'm going to. The twists, the characters, the spice, the ending, the everything. 😍😍😍

What I liked:
-I loved the prologue, I did not guess right on who it was though. I was so thoroughly shocked, but absolutely amazing.
-The spice was so delicious and fun, my poor husband 🤣
-Travis, he was so sweet to her. I cried for him multiple times. He deserved so much more.
-The ending, the plottwists. My jaw dropped and I screamed more than once. I was so not ready.

What I didn't like:
For once, I have nothing to put here.

Quotes:
-The human body is both delicate and can take so much abuse. That fascinates me as much as death mesmerizes me.
-“I think I have a new kink, though. Who knew I'd like monster sex.”
-“I’m going to make you scream for me again, one way or another.”

Spice level: 🖤🖤🖤

I cannot get over how splendidly done this is. I approached it with some apprehension due to its inspiration from a favorite classic of mine, but I downright enjoyed it.

The intricately woven backstory adds to the complexity of emotions, which comes across in waves as you navigate the events leading up to the unmasking of the villain. Some villains are driven by revenge, others by love, and some are born with hatred blackening their hearts long before they get a taste of darkness.

This modern spin on Frankenstein will leave you questioning who the true villain is: the monster or the one who created the monster. Set against the backdrop of a Halloween festival, with morally grey masked men, this thriller delivers a twist that will leave you on the edge of your seat right up until the final conclusion. What more could you want from a spooky season read?

The book was quick and hard with spice! It got straight to the point and the plot was really good; it delves into themes of obsession, secrecy, and desire.

The relationship dynamic is twisted, full of sharp edges that create suspense. Overall, the book is perfect for readers who enjoy darker romances that are emotionally charged and packed with suspense. It won’t be for everyone due to the level of intensity and the often morally grey areas the characters tread, but for fans of the genre, *Dark Needs* delivers a rollercoaster of emotions.

Thoughts : Love a masked man! The plot twist has me 🫢 gasping!!! Totally thought I knew who the “serial unaliver” was… I was wrong!!! Poor Travis, he had such a tragic past, but we sure love a traumatized, possessive, fiiiine masked man, so… 🤷🏻‍♀️

⚠️⚠️⚠️spoilers - whole story***
Kenzie is a college student that has a crush on Justin, big man on campus. They both work at the Halloween Haunted Farm and Spook trail. She has flirted with him and he finally notices her, he tells her he will meet her at the end of the night.
Kenzie sees Justin later on as a scarecrow. She gives it up but notices Justin “beefed” up his costume to look more muscular and deepens his voice… 😒🙄😒
Travis was the scarecrow… Travis was actually looking for Justin to get revenge.

Past - Travis and Justin grew up together. Both were handsome young men, both were popular and both were wealthy. However, Justin‘s family was much wealthier. So as Travis became naturally more popular, he felt he had to hide behind Justin because Justin would become a mean and spiteful bully. In high school, travis was dating a girl named Beatrice. Justin couldn’t stand that Travis had something that he didn’t so at a party, Justin saw Beatrice was using dr%gs and used this to his advantage. Travis walked in with Beatrice‘s head in Justin‘s lap. Travis, of course got upset. And distanced himself from that group.
Travis’s parents passed on a car accident before he went to college. He promised his dad he’d enjoy college and pledge a frat. The house he pledges for happens to be the same one Justin is in. During rush week, Justin tries to scare Travis putting him in the back of pick up truck and going really fast down a dark dirt road. Travis ends up getting jostled out of the back of the pick up truck and one of the guys riding in an SUV behind him runs over him causing serious damage.
The guys leave him there and say he hitch hiked back from the pledging.
A farmer finds Travis and calls the ambulance. Travis wakes up a while later from a coma. He had damage all over his body and scars on his face that he’s now ashamed of. He even had to relearn how to walk and function as a human being. He became severely depressed and wanting to lay at rest with his parents. But not before he got his revenge.

Present -
Travis finds Kenzie instead and he talks about his dark desires.
Kenzie texts Justin and he apologizes for not meeting her that night. She gets confused and then realizes that the scarecrow wasn’t Justin. The next night she wishes for the scarecrow to come back. He does but dressed as a demon. She still gives it up, loving the fright factor of the unknown.
She follows Travis and sees his face, sh isn’t scared of him and the form a situationship. He confesses his issues and his need for revenge. She understands, but tells him to give it up.
Justin is a big douche canoe. He sees Kenzie with Travis and tries to “save her” from him by pew pewing
Travis and setting his house on 🔥. Kenzie runs away and then flees the city.
Five years later
Kenzie is at a publishing firm that is being bought out by Justin’s company. She doesn’t know this at first but when she finds out she gets concerned he is after her because of what she witnessed. She also sees Travis’ car and doesn’t know what to think because surely Travis passed after Justin pew pewed him.
Justin nabs her from a company party under the guise of saving her from Travis. Justin takes her back to his cabin and reveals he is the cray cray serial unaliver with the dark twisted fantasies.
Travis saves her and unalives Travis.

Dark Needs by C. Cyan is an intoxicating blend of dark romance and horror that completely took me by surprise. As someone who typically gravitates toward dual POVs, I was impressed by how seamlessly C. Cyan switched between Kenzie and Travis’s perspectives. The transitions felt natural, and their distinct voices made it easy to stay immersed in their story.

The flashbacks in this book were perfectly timed, allowing me to piece together Travis's backstory without disrupting the flow of the main present storyline. I appreciated how the author didn’t rush to reveal every detail at once. Instead, the story unfolded slowly as the connection between Kenzie and Travis deepened, which really kept me hooked. I found myself loving the way the plot grew alongside their relationship, building intensity. You can't help but empathize and support Travis in his dark ideologies.

The push and pull between fear and desire, the mystery surrounding Travis, and the dark tension throughout the book make this perfect for fans of morally gray/black characters and dark romantic plots. And let’s not forget Travis himself—the menacing, brooding masked man whose damaged soul makes him both dangerous and compelling.

I honestly can’t wait to see what C. Cyan has in store next. If you’re into dark romance, masked men, and a hint of horror, this book is a must-read!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐(5/5)
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (3/5)

You should probably know, I am an absolute slut for Frankenstein. My spouse and I collect Frankie things and it's a big deal in my household. When I signed up for the ARC of Dark Needs I went into it knowing it could either be a really incredible Frank-inspired story, or a story that tarnished one of my favorite characters. I was immediately aware it was going to be an incredible retelling!
C. Cyan definitely did right but us Franken-wh*res.

The POV was so well written. Our morally grey MMC… whew. I was so taken by him and happily let myself drown in his darkness. All I will say is, his development had me going through MANY emotions and left me in my feelings, hard. I felt like I related to Kenzie, in that she let herself get wrapped up in something that seems wrong but feels OH so right.

If you are a fan of halloween spice, twists, frankenstein, masked men and morally grey MMCs that you could eat alive, this is for you. I absolutely recommend this and I plan to reread it closer to Halloween as it was a fun, easy read that checks all the boxes for me.

A great read for spooky season and you need to RUN to your TBR, right now.

Dark needs is a dark romance Frankenstien retelling. This book was PERFECT for Halloween. Our FMC is working as a scare actor at a halloween trail when a masked man approaches her. She thinks its her crush, so they get it on in filthy, filthy ways. But she can't be sure if it was the man the thought it was or not.....

This book was honestly running on pure vibes, I really really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it for the spooky season!

My ONLY criticism was that sometimes the dialogue slipped into being quite formal. The characters were all supposed to be between 19-25, so it threw me off a bit, I won't lie.

BUT the story was good enough that I could look past that and just enjoy the book.

"Dark Needs: A Masked Man Dark Romance" is a modern retelling of Frankenstein, filled with unexpected twists and turns.
It's thrilling, engaging, and perfect for the Halloween season.
And OMG... Chapter 27 is incredibly dark!
It will leave you questioning who the real villain is in the story.
The book is packed with spice, obsession, and desire.
At times, I found myself struggling with the decisions made by the female main character; it definitely gave me those "Don't do it, girl!" vibes! :D

It was a quick read; I really liked it.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the ideology of this being a romantic horror retelling of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

What does a haunted trail, a bride of Frankenstein, and a man wearing a scarecrow mask holding a knife have in common? This twisted unhinged book of revenge.

Mackenze harps after one guy. Which leads her working along a trail waiting for him. When she sees a man in a scarecrow mask she thinks it's said guy. This leads to Mackenzie getting thrown to the ground and given the 'o' of a lifetime.

Travis is out for revenge. He wants the people who left him broken to feel the pain he had to go through to piece himself back together again.

When Mackenzie sees who is really hiding under the mask. She isn't frightened by the scars. She learns all of the hidden truths and who is the real monster.

Frankenstein reimagining!!

Kenzie is working as a scare actor dressed as the bride of Frankenstein at her town's halloween attraction. Her long time crush, Justin, is also working there and tells her he's going to surprise her later in the night. As the night is winding down, a masked man comes and deflies her in the most delicious way. She thinks it's Justin giving her her surprise, but it's actually someone else.

Travis thinks he is now a monster after a near death accident has left him deeply scarred and disfigured. He has a plan of revenge for those that left him there to die after his accident, and Justin is at the top of his list. While on his way to carry out his vengeance, he sees a beautiful, scarred bride and cannot help turbulent feelings of need that over take him.

I enjoyed this story so much. I loved the twist at the end.

I absolutely loved this dark stalker romance of a Frankenstein retelling. Perfect for a spooky season read. A masked man who’s morally grey & great horror/thriller vibes.

Kenzie is working the yearly Spook Trail dressed unusually as the Bride of Frankenstein when she plans to meet her crush & a man in a mask dominates her in the trail instead. She becomes enamored by the man behind the mask & learns more about him & his past. When obsession turns deadly, Kenzie starts over in a new city, only to have the past come back to make its claim on her.

This story takes several unexpected turns & just when you think it’s over, it takes you for another loop. Perfect amount of spice, obsession, desire, suspense, with also dark plot points (check your trigger warnings).

I read this as ARC & am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I was promised one thing in the blurb. I was given something completely different. Not to say it wasn't a bad book, but I wouldn't have picked it up because it didn't meet what I wanted it to be. This is supposed to be a masked man book. That's a very small part of it. In fact, our guy isn't what I wanted or expected at all. Our leading lady was all over the place, and none of the characters were likable. No, not even in a "dark romance" way. I feel like this plot had potential, and it fizzled quickly when it went too fast too quickly and then slowed waaaay down. It took me a moment to get through this, and I usually buzz through masked man books. It had its moments. I'd read more reviews (both good and bad) to get a feeling if this is what you want to read before starting it.

This was...something else.
The book had a few intriguing plot twists, but the way it was written and the rushed storyline ruined it for me. The writing was juvenile and cliche, ESPECIALLY the explicit scenes. Those were hard to get through, I won't lie.
It felt like you gave someone an hour and a haphazard plot and then told them to write a book. Every scene felt rushed and always had some detail, event, or awkward dialogue that made it blatantly cringey, though maybe that's just me being nitpicky.
I felt that the characters' personalities didn't fit who they portrayed either, given that there were very few details on their upbringing. I can only think of two events for each character that supposedly formed their personality and explained their actions.
Either way, I don't regret reading. It was an experience at the least.

I was really disappointed with this book. I was told this would be a Frankenstein retelling and I did stop at 64% so I may have stopped before it got to anything like Frankenstein but the only similarities it had to Frankenstein were the Mary Shelly quotes in the book.
this was more of a knock off slasher type story and none of the details. And I'm down for a good slasher story if it was written well, but what I got was a bunch of spoiled, emotional, horny kids. yes one of the MMC's did go through some trauma but it felt like the author was trying to write him as a psychopath but failed terribly. right when things do start to kind of get interesting the chapter ends and it's flash forward to five years and I hated that.
had some great potential but poorly executed.

Since we are getting close to the spooky season, I figured why not? This book is amazing, I mean I absolutely love this retelling book. I wasn't too sure at first about the Frankenstein retelling since Frankenstein is such a great classic. But WOW did it work and I could not put it down.
Obsessive (check), Spicy (check), Suspense (check), WOW ending (check. The FMC is Hot and the MMC was beautifully written as was the storyline. I am now a huge fan of C.Cyan and want so much more from this author. For sure 5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐’s here and for sure I will be following any and all of this author's platforms that I can. Stalkerish? Yep!

This book what can I say....wow. I should be concerned by how much I loved it....maybe.

Travis was my absolute favorite and he got such a bad wrap through almost the whole book. I hated Justin from the very beginning and it turned out to be completely warranted in my opinion. Kenzie was just trying to figure herself out and find her way through these 2 men. My heart broke for her and all she had gone through with the 2 of them.

The only thing that I did not like was the jumping in time the couple of times in the book. I felt that it messed with the flow of the book. It made sense though and it worked with the story.

perfect read for spooky season

Solid dark romance to start fall and welcome Halloween 🎃

It has masked men, murder, primal play - what more could a girl ask for!

- please note- Slight spoilers here so turn back now if you don’t wanna know too much:

🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈🙈

this is not a traditional retelling like most fairytales you find, it has nods to Frankenstein but in no way is a retelling. Also if you like the moral black villain to be the main character in your books this is not it the villain in this is not seen too much and his sadistic shit is only lightly mentioned - the true mmc is softer than I like my morally grey men but was still definitely morally grey regardless

“I was a decent man before the accident, but misery made me a monster”

Oh man, that twist ending! If you are in the mood for a spicy Halloween book then you’ve come to the right place. This book was 🥵! The world building wasn’t too in depth but it was still a super fun and quick read that’s perfect for spooky season. I loved the elements from Frankenstein and The Phantom of the Opera that this book contained. I definitely won’t be looking at masks the same way again!

Dark Needs is a story that is heavy on the trigger warnings so be sure to take a look before reading this one. 😉

PLOTLINE
I liked the premise a lot, but I just think it fell flat. I guessed the finale twist quite early on which always brings my ratings down.

CHARACTERS
I liked Travis. I hated Justin (you're supposed to).

I thought Kenzie was very 2D. Like yes, I overlooked her kneeling for a masked man 2 pages in (because it was HOT AND THE SPICE WAS GREAT), but then by the 4th chapter she was all in the relationship, Travis was no longer super dangerous and they were pretty much in love which just happened so fast.

I get the spice was probably the main focus here but I think the tension between the characters could have been built up so much better.

NARRATIVE
I mean...yes, the job was done. The spice was fab but everything else was just okay. There was numerous timeskips as well, and while one or two might have supported the plot, it just felt like like a poor attempt to get everything moving quickly.

Hot and scary

I loved this read! It’s got killers, masked men, and a mystery to be revealed in a surprise twist! Oh did I mention the spice level is so high it’s off the charts! This has a Phantom of the opera vibe with a touch of a hot scarred monster that finds love in a young woman. Travis and Kenzie don’t get their HEA easily but when they do it’s explosive. I love the way C.Ryan has a dual POV and a back and forth narrative. It’s a unique way of writing and I really loved it. If you love dark reads with killers and mystery you’ll love this book! Well done C. Ryan 😈🖤😈

This book had screaming “girl wtf are you doing” “oh your gonna regret that” “come on girl wth are you thinking” way to many times but I slowly got it. Kenzie is just a girl working the trail at a haunted farm who’s got a crush on the hot popular guy, Justin. With secrets from the past looming around and oh a masked man that is scary , hot and a mystery. Kenzie puts herself into all of it. What you think you know you don’t. It’s the great thing about how this book is wrote!

Dark Needs by C. Cyan is a dark masked man romance.

This is the first book of C. Cyan's that I have read, and it won't be my last. I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't wait to see how it was all going to play out. This is a book I definitely don't want to give away any spoilers. So, jump in and enjoy the ride.

I would recommend this book if you're looking for a dark romance, horror romance, stalker romance, or romantic thriller.
