A Cruel Kindness is the first in a series following an overarching plot over the course of standalone love stories, and is a Soul Mates, reluctant allies, forced proximity romance full of fantasy and science fiction elements.
The Bridge. The fabled connection between two sister planets, able to send people through time and space to reach the other. A story of harmony between worlds ruled by the same gods.
The reality was a war, twenty years and counting, with one planet fighting to keep the other from invading their world. Their strongest weapon—the paranimas. The Soul Mates.
Able to hop between worlds at a whim, the few blessed with a perfect match for their soul were trusted to protect their planet from the threat of the other.
The next pair blessed would test the old adage that Soul Mates fell in love with one another at first sight. Shoved together despite years of hatred and betrayal between their families, Bellamy and Soren must cross the Bridge and put a stop to the war, no matter who is really at fault.
This book was so much fun!! Honestly I haven’t read anything by Rory before and I was blown away!😍 I need the next book in the series NOW!!!
The tension between Bellamy and Soren was SO FREAKING GOOD. Definitely one of my favorite slow burns I read this year. I’m a huge fan of Soul Mates/ Soul Bonds and how they couldn’t keep their hands off each other 🫠. I really enjoyed the enemies to lovers aspect and how they fought the bond and temptation for so long. The way the bonds spoke in their heads had me laughing out loud so many times throughout each chapter.
The bedroom scene at the royal home… OH MY GOD 🔥🔥

READ THIS BOOK!!!
Thank you Rory for the ARC, absolutely loved it!! Can’t wait for Ford and Esmes book!!!
I cannot express how OBSESSED I am with this book!! Everything about this novel was wonderful and exhilarating! I literally devoured this novel in three sittings. I need everyone to read this now and I just know that my review will not do it justice.
A Cruel Kindness by Rory L. Scott follows a story of loyalty, betrayal, love and vengeance, all through the eyes of our two protagonists, Bellamy and Soren, fated mates and enemies to lovers, brought together by the Gods. You could literally feel the sexual tension coming through the pages and I was THRIVING on it! Soulmates who have matching tattoos and are both badasses, what more could you want!?
This was an absolutely wonderful read from start to finish. The writing was very descriptive, which is needed for such an expanse and unusual world. The story and pacing was fast, sucking in the reader from the get go and the character development was written exceptionally well, allowing complexities and personalities to shine through the pages. I fell in love with the characters so easily. Soren is genuinely the love of my life and he can call me Princess any day of the week!
The world building was so immersive and rich. Scott's universe and power systems were so fascinating and layered. I really enjoyed reading and learning about the history of their world as well as the unique 'fated-mates' pairings that occur. The mix of both science fiction and fantasy themes was a wonderful story to dive into, allowing the reader to easily get lost in this story.
Sometimes, Bellamy and Soren did annoy me, but their stubbornness only added to their complex characters. I cannot express how much I devoured this book and the sexual tension between these two. I was giggling and kicking my feet throughout!! The side characters were also so lovable and written extremely well with their own complex personalities and backstories. I want to be friends with so many of them, fight and laugh with them, comfort them, I had so much love for these character's that Rory L. Scott brought to life!
This novel had everything; a slow burn, forced proximity romance, action, intricate dynamics and an enthralling and unpredictable journey that will have you hooked! (Also fated mates horses!!!) I loved every moment of this story and cannot wait to read not only the next story in this series, but other works by Rory L. Scott. I officially have a new book boyfriend and I need everyone to read this and fall in love with him!
Thank you so much to the author for and ARC of A Cruel Kindness in exchange for an honest review.
This love story is one that surpasses royal feuds and worldly wars. Having a soul mate is a blessing from the gods, and the stronger the bond, the stronger the couple. Soren and Bellamy are furious and terrified when they find that they are, not only bonded mates, but paranimas - the strongest soul mate bond to exist. They are on opposite sides of a royal family feud, but this bond places them on the front lines of a decades long war with another planet. Due to their bond’s strength, they can pass the bridge that connects two planets across space and time. Their goal is peace, but can they find it with each other long enough to find it with another planet?
This story had me enthralled from the beginning. The elements are so unique and kept me wanting more. By the end of the book, I did feel a little lost. I have so many questions, and even though I understand the ending is a cliffhanger, I didn’t feel like there was any type of closure to anything that happened in the story - other than their accepting and embracing the bond. I am very much looking forward to book two and am interested to see how the plot will continue.
Loved: 💜 this universe is unlike any other books I’ve read 💜 the idea of multiple soul mates at different levels is intriguing 💜 the incorporation of horses in the storyline
Didn’t Love: 🛑 I was left with so many questions - I have a love/hate relationship with cliffhangers. 🛑 I felt like their arguments against the bond weren’t strong enough to warrant how hard they fought against it. 🛑 I wish there was more history of the war, especially if this was going on for atleast twenty years.
💬 Fav Quote: “Personally, I like rings. Especially on other people. You should tell Soren to wear one on his fourth finger, the Bond decided to chime in.”
💭 Dedication: “To my sweet, lucky boy, you were the best dog a girl could have asked for. Thank you for listening and cuddling through years of childhood drama, teenage angst, young adulthood, and everything in between. I’ll miss you forever.”
📝 First Line: “I handed over my body to be ravaged and raided and the only thing they gave me in return was a Soul Mate.”
This honest, voluntary review is based on a pre-release copy.
Wow, wow wow! What a way to start a new fantasy series! I have to say, there is something about a fated mates type story that always gets me, and I loved the visual representations of the Bonds in this book!!! So if that sounds like something you might be interested in, here's what you should know... Bellamy and Soren (check out their playlist by the way) are the heirs to their respective royal families, but a war that initially separates them one day brings them back together by making them Paranimas- 100% soul matches. And these soul matches are vital to fighting a war between two planets connected only by an interplanetary bridge that only soul mates cross because of the toll it takes on those who travel it. Now, some of my favorite (spoiler-free) parts were: the visuals!! I mean I love the visual representation of a connection, and Rory also does a great job of descriptive writing that highlights the differences between the two worlds. That being said, that description does not come at a cost of pacing- it is still engaging and fast paced, keeping you reading and reading! Also, the "voice" that the bond has- what it has made me wonder about is what that "voice" is like for mates of different levels or whether they're representative of the persons themselves. And the equine!!! Obviously we have a few stars but I love that there is a budding connection with them and their riders! For Freya's horse, I kept thinking of the Horse from Tangled, being that large, white, expressive horse! And how can we forget our leads! I liked reading both of their perspectives because you could learn more about what made them closed off at first, and also get a first hand glimpse in to the slow coming together and the possessive scenes that make them (and maybe made me) FERAL. I was kicking my feet trying to remain composed and quiet! Also I didn't learn this until halfway but Soren is inspired by Tom Blythe circa Coriolaneous Snow? I can get behind that. His teasing from the beginning is just what I want from my main male characters! What I didn't like? I don't have many criticisms, rather that I have so many questions that need to be answered in future books! Is Esme hiding something? Why do the Muli people seem to have something against Bellamy in particular? Thank you Rory Scott and Love Notes PR for the eARC in exchange for an honest review!!
Tropes 💗forced proximity 💗soul mates 💗enemies to lovers 💗reluctant allies 💗one bed
I had the privilege of arc reading a cruel kindness this is the first sci-fi read I have done and I loved it!!
The slow burn, tension filled relationship between our fmc and mmc Bellamy and soren is soo good the banter between our main characters and supporting characters is amazing and so well written.
The world building is addictive and the world is so different to anything I’ve read about I really loved reading something different.
Rory’s different take on soul mates or as she has called them “paranoias” is so fun to read about. The soul mates are found and bound by a tattoo like mark, the way they are graded for a match is by the similarities in one another’s markings. Is the marking is 100% they are paranimas. The history between bell and soren is tense from the start they are true enemies to lovers.
The writing and story line is so well paced it really draws you in. There are so many small elements Rory has thought of that really brings the story together and makes it work really really well
Also the cliffhanger at the end!!! I can’t wait for book 2!!
Thank you Rory and love notes pr for allowing me the privilege of reading this earc ❤️
Rory Scott is the queen of slow-burn, high-tension storytelling! This book is absolutely addicting—from the tension between the fiery characters, the unique world-building, and the dark secrets that keep you hooked. I couldn’t put it down!
The world in this story is breathtakingly original. In this universe, people are bonded by their Marks—a mysterious gift (or curse) that ties them to one another, especially if they share identical Marks with their "paranimas." When Bell and Soren discover they have perfectly matched Marks on their backs, they must confront their past anger and grudges while adapting to a dangerous new reality—one that throws them into a war between worlds.
The story’s pacing is perfect, seamlessly blending political intrigue, nonstop action, and a slow-burn, fated-mate romance that will have you turning pages late into the night. This sci-fi romance is phenomenal, and Rory Scott’s writing style is so captivating that I’m adding all of her books to my TBR list. Highly recommend!
Thank you Rory Scott and Love Notes PR for the eARC!
To say I was pleasantly surprised by this book would be an understatement. I wasn’t too aware of what I was getting myself into but I was here for it all the same.
It’s very sci-fi which I thoroughly enjoyed: the premise of the two planets, bonded pairs (the varying levels of this as well), the politics and the world building had me hooked.
I enjoyed Bellamy and Soren’s relationship - admittedly it’s nothing to shout home about but I don’t have any complaints either, so take that as you will.
Overall, it’s a strong book and if you’re a fan of hunger games/divergent/shatter me series, I think this will be for you.
Thank you to LoveNotes PR for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
If you’re in the mood for fated mates/bonded soulmates where being apart literally makes them sick (ah yes, true love with flu-like symptoms), then this might just be your thing.
Quick PSA: The second couple introduced in this book is, somehow, infinitely more interesting than the main duo. I’m cautiously excited for their story… but let’s be real, my hopes are low and my expectations are low.
This is a standalone (technically) following Bellamy (FMC) and Soren (MMC), both royal. Soren has a chip on his shoulder because Bellamy’s dad forced him into military service (no nepotism here, just war crimes!), and Bellamy hates him too… for reasons that are never clearly explained. I guess she just sensed the vibes. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
World-building? I mean, it exists. Sort of. Mostly you’ll find yourself muttering “what the hell is happening” at least once every few pages, but you’ll eventually stop caring enough to ask. It’s that kind of book.
Here’s what I think I pieced together: Everyone has a magical mark (I think? Maybe? Who knows!) that can only be revealed by a priest. Then boom, off to the military you go because fated mates make for stronger soldiers. There’s a war between two planets, but the details are as clear as mud. Bellamy’s dad is the emperor of the planet we’re supposed to be rooting for. (Go… team?)
Naturally, Bellamy gets conscripted (by choice to scape marriage) and is paired with her totally unjustified nemesis, Soren. Neither of them are thrilled, and they spend a lot of time resisting the bond with all the maturity of two toddlers fighting over a toy.
Cue a series of unmemorable events that eventually lead them to realize that, shocker, maybe they judged each other too quickly and maybe they’re actually good people. And now they’re in love.
It’s a simple enemies-to-lovers formula that, unfortunately, loses steam toward the end. The pacing drags, the chemistry fizzles, and by the last third I was mainly here out of stubbornness.
And about that ending: No HEA (Happily Ever After). Barely even a HFN (Happy For Now). The book just sort of… stops. Nothing is resolved, major problems are introduced at the last minute, and if you want closure, you’ll have to chase it across the sequels featuring other couples.
If that’s your thing, awesome. As for me, I prefer my standalone books like I prefer my meals: finished.✅
I love this book so so much. Soren and Bellamy gave ALL the enemies to lovers vibe.
I was kicking my feet by time these two were interacting. It gave all the things I ever want in a fantasy book. I can’t ever elaborate well on books I loved so just read this damn book. You absolutely won’t regret it. and pls talk to me about it when you do read it because I love it so so much. Can’t wait for book 2!!!
Forced proximity Soulmates Enemies to lovers touch her/him and die energy found family vibes (a little)
Thank you love notes pr for this amazing arc🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
A sci-fi romance in which soulmates exist (and not just any kind of soulmates but a passion-filled soulmate bond). And also in which the MMC is inspired by the one and only Tom Blyth!!!!
If you're not running now, WHAT ARE YOU DOING???
As a dear friend of Rory, I've been lurking in the shadows of her DM'S since this book was in the making. I knew that this book was going to be someTHING but Rory still managed to gag me despite this.
Tension and Chemistry is Ms. Rory L. Scotts forte, I'm talking about nail biting & AND hot Tension.
Also I love my fair share of jealousy scenes but seeing 2 fated bonds being protective as fuck about each other FR had me gripping my kindle real tight.
Soren and Bellamy are kinda my dream throuple tbh...But god knows that'd shoot me down if I got near any of them LMAOOOO. In my dreams though, we're a thing!
Given this is a new universe and world that we are being introduced to, there's a lot of world-building but it's definitely worth getting through just to meet these fun and new characters!
Thank you Rory for the e-arc, as always so honored to call you an amazing author and friend of mine <333
Ok I did not know I needed a sci-fi romanctasy in my life ?! Really enjoying both Soren mmc and Bellamey fmc The banter was great!! You have soul matched, grumpy and grumpy lol found family ( in my opinion) and cliffhanger!
DNF at 60% This book had a great plot line and was super thought out. The idea of having different layers of soul mates was creative and I liked how it was formed in the book. However it was stagnant. Hardly any action was going on with Bellamy and Soren and even though they were fighting their bond, there just wasn't enough to pull me into it. I tried, but I got bored of how long it took for something to happen and as I got farther in, I was starting to get confused about where the story would go. It's a great story idea and although not my thing, if you want, try it out!
If you've never read a Rory L. Scott book, first of all, what? Why? How very dare you? You MUST read her books & I would recommend starting w/ this one b/c omggggg it's utterly fantastic! But really all of her books are fabulous & you can't go wrong starting w/ any of them. "A Cruel Kindness" (what an amazing title!) grabbed my attention right away & I'm pretty sure I hissed at anyone who dared interrupt my reading time once I began. The pacing was perfection, the character development, *chef kiss*, the spice was 'yell at the author in her DMs in solely expletives & emojis' hot, & the plot was SO freaking interesting! One of the biggest draws of Scott's writing for me is her effortless banter. I laugh as much as I cry in her books (ok, I laugh way more), & yes, you will cry b/c Scott is a cruel mistress who gains power from the tears of her readers. But Scott is also the kind of author who will leave you begging to have your heart ripped from your chest yet again in the next book. B/c believe me, once you read a Rory Scott book you will become addicted to her writing. Sorry, I don't make the rules. She will also introduce you to your next book boyfriend. His name is Soren & he's yummy. You're welcome. I cannot recommend "A Cruel Kindness" enough & I think it's pretty clear I enjoyed it! If you enjoy forced proximity, enemies to lovers, soul mates, reluctant allies, plenty of angst, & one bed, then definitely check out this book!
major spoiler-free | tropes: forced proximity, reluctant allies, soul mates, found family(?)
Normally, I'm extremely picky about sci-fi books - they can be overly complicated with the sheer amount of lore shoved in the preliminary chapters. A Cruel Kindness is the opposite. Not overwhelming in the slightest, Scott introduces us to her world, characters, and their story with ease. I'd say this book was a pleasant and easy read, even if the content itself is outside of my usual interests.
Anyhow, ACK leads us through the dual planet world of Virterra and Muliterra through the POVs of Soren and Bellamy who are Matches, Scott's take on soul mates. With the war between Vir and Muli raging on, we watch, rapt, on the edges of our seats, as our beloved soul mates fight not only against the enemy, but their feelings for each other. There's a frustrating and constant push-pull of their relationship, of which we get insight through the eyes of them both.
Did I want to wring Bellamy and Soren by their necks many, many times through this book? Absolutely. With love!
✧ WRITING STYLE Rory L. Scott has a delicious way of describing scenery. The stark contrasts between the planets we find the story takes place on are well written, Vir being industrial militarism, built up with concrete walls, bland greys; a fortress built for purpose and not beauty. Muli, on the other hand, is all nature and calming, scenic views. When I say the irony isn't missed, you'll get what I mean in the final 3-4 chapters. Looks can be deceiving.
I wanted a little more depth into thoughts and actions as far as characters went, but physical appearances were not to be forgotten. Scott's descriptions of characters were consistent, which is a lot harder than you'd think. At times, there are inconsistencies with what characters are wearing - such as one scene where Bellamy is described to be wearing a skirt, but in the same scene grabs something from the pocket of her "pants". These are small details that don't make or break the experience, though!
✧ WORLDBUILDING & LORE In the beginning I was a bit confused, but that's common when you first walk into a fantasy book. When divulging lore to a brand new reader, there's a delicate balance between telling them about the world right away (and subsequently overwhelming them) or keeping information until it's necessary. I think the lore could have been focused on a little more in the beginning, but I'm also extremely nosy and hunger for all the lore, all the time.
The worldbuilding is well thought out, no detail feels out of place, and the characters make sense given the context. We are told who is involved in this war, why, how long it has been going on - all of it. The only secrets that are kept are lore-based, and we are given the rest. I'm very happy with the exposition to the reader. I don't feel overwhelmed, despite this entire world being completely different from our own. I'm not left with any questions, there are no plot holes. It's, all around, well written!
I do wish the focus on romance wasn't so heavy at times, but this is a romantasy book. I knew what I was getting. I personally love war plots and the in-book strategy involved, but that wasn't the clear focus of this book. This does not impact my rating whatsoever, but if you've read this far - be prepared for a heavy lean on the romance aspect of this romantasy.
✧ CHARACTERS One of my biggest pet peeves with how characters are written is how they suddenly change halfway through the book. Their little nuances disappear, their personality suddenly changes because they're in love or because the setting changed. Scott doesn't do that, though.
Despite the chaos Bellamy is thrown into, she is still Bellamy. While aspects of her personality do suddenly change, it's by fault of the Bond, the connection between her and Soren. Even then, her training as a Royal doesn't slip away in the night just because she is no longer in that setting. Although, sometimes her need to constantly be perfect, back straight, people-pleaser face on - it's realistic. That doesn't just go away, especially after years of keeping it up.
Soren, on the other hand, is the barbaric, aggressive, and at times charismatic foil to Bellamy's poise and refined speech. Whether intentional or not, there's a comparison to be drawn between these two soul mates and the concepts of the divine feminine and divine masculine. At the same time, it's not in a toxic way.
At first, I thought the connection was very shallow. It was all about burning touches and physical attraction. I got worried this book was going to be all spice without the connection that actually comes with slow-burn soul mate tropes. I was wrong, through. Might I emphasize the slow burn? Hunker down, you're in for a lot of pining, miscommunication, and wanting to murder both Soren and Bellamy.
And the other characters? Freya, the woman that you are. Without adding spoilers, her Match makes total sense and I adore her entire character. Esme and Ford have a special place in my heart as well, though I'd love to get to know them both better. Ford felt very boring at first, until his backstory was hinted at and... I understand now. The entire main group compliment each other so well, and no two characters are alike. It's refreshing. I'm excited to see more about Esme and Ford's dynamic and secrets in the next book!
Elijah can choke, respectfully.
✧ FINAL NOTES I enjoyed A Cruel Kindness. It left off on a cliffhanger that did make me want to read the second, if only to learn about all the secrets we find are being kept. Am I especially attached to the characters and world? Not terribly so, which is the only reason I didn't rate 5 stars. While I enjoyed reading ACK, I don't think about it constantly. I would and will absolutely recommend it to book friends and truly found pleasure in this book at the time, but it's not a book I would reread.
The second book? I will be keeping an eye out for.
I am an absolute sucker for soul mates stories. Always have been so I was super excited to start this one.
The story building was easy to understand which was a relief for me since world buildings can be so complicated . Bellamy and Sorens story was so beautiful and deep. The second both of them found out that they are soulmates everything has changed. They are linked and bonded but they actually hate each other. The bickering between them was so entertaining. My favorite part of the story was definitely the bond. Whenever they would try to resist the bond but the bond would confront the them in their head, It made me smile so hard 🤭 The whole plot was so well written and the other characters were just as amazing. I was so happy when I found out that esme and ford are going to have their own story. It’s that kind of book that I can see as a Netflix show one day 🤭
HUGE thank you to Love Notes PR and Rory L. Scott for giving me the chance to read and review this book 💖
quick synopsis In a world where anyone who has a soul bond that’s 60% compatible or higher is required to fight in an interplanetary war, Bellamy, the beloved daughter of the Emperor, despite being a royal, has volunteered to fight. Not only does she have a soul bond, but she’s discovered that the match is 100% compatible–something so rare, there’s only been one other 100% compatible match currently known.
There’s just one problem: Bellamy’s soul mate is Soren, the man her father forced into the war, literally kicking and screaming.
Bellamy and Soren are forced into a tentative partnership, neither wanting to rely on a bond that makes them feel trapped. But the more time they spend together, the closer they get, and the harder it is to resist the bond’s lure.
main thoughts This book sucked me in immediately. Fated mates + enemies-to-lovers is like catnip for me and ho-lee shit, did this book deliver.
I first want to talk about the writing style because wow. This is my first read by Rory L. Scott, but it definitely won’t be my last. I’m thinking I’m going to have to read her back catalogue now, lol. She’s a fantastic writer and that made me enjoy the book that much more.
The world building was fascinating; detailed without being overly so, but gave enough explanation that I felt like I could picture everything perfectly. It was extremely aesthetic and probably the most interested I’ve been in a sci-fi atmosphere that I’ve ever read.
The narration switches between Bellamy and Soren, which I loved. I always enjoy reading the MMC’s POV and it enriched this story so much. Soren has quickly become one of my favorite book boyfriends of all-time; he very much embodies the “burn the world down for her” trope and I loved it.
Also the equine partners…oh my gosh. Basically alien/fantasy horses. I LOVED this detail! Also, it’s so cool that they bond with their riders in a similar way the soulmates bond. It was just a beautiful thing to read and I’m super excited to read even more about them in the next book!
I also really loved the found family aspect of this story. Bell always felt like she didn’t belong and she finally found someplace she felt appreciated and loved for who she is, not for her name or status. My heart really went out to both Bellamy and Soren for the lives they lead, but they both end up making the most of their situation as soldiers.
The side characters are also incredibly lovable and memorable and each one so unique. I’m interested to learn more about them. I’m not sure how many books the author plans for this series, but I’ll be reading them, regardless. This book has landed a spot on my favorite reads of 2024 and I’ll be following her for the next book in the series!
bullet points * the bonded mates storyline is awesome, albeit totally brutal. * I have a feeling no one truly knows what started this war except the ones in charge of the planets. I have a feeling we’ll be learning a lot more in the next book. * Elijah is a major d*ck and boy, did he piss me off. But did I sense something between him and Freya? Hmmm… * I am d y i n g for Ford and Esme’s story. That first chapter at the end was NOT enough and I can’t wait to read more!
final thoughts Read this book. Seriously. It’s incredible. I loved everything about this story and I can’t wait to read the next book and learn more about Esme and Ford 💖
As always, if you end up reading this book, please come back and let me know what you thought of it in the comments below!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to be a part of the ARC team! “A Cruel Kindness” releases November 19, 2024!
How does a sci-fi/fantasy hybrid with soul mates sound? If you said “that sounds amazing, where can I find one?” I’ve got a recommendation for you.
To protect the planet, the bridge must be defended. To cross the bridge, you must have a match. When the emperor's daughter, Bellamy, sets out to protect her kingdom, she never expects to receive the rarest of all matches— a 100% Soul Match. Soren also never expected to receive a Soul match, and certainly not with the daughter of the man who ruined Soren’s life.
At this point, it’s safe to say that I’ll read literally anything that this author writes. It’s always a good time, and this was no exception. The plot is always good, the connection between the MCs is always strong, and the vibes are always immaculate.
We’ve got to start with the characters themselves, because that’s the strongest point of this story. Individually, the MCs are incredible. Soren is fiercely protective without crossing that line into a controlling, insane alpha-hole. Bellamy is clever and capable, and while she’s obviously insanely attracted to the MMC, she never loses her common sense or basic functionality. We still get a taste of that delightful possessive/obsessive streak that’s a common theme with the fated lovers/mates trope, but it’s tempered beautifully by common sense and basic communication skills. The two together are adorable and infatuated, but each allows the other to stand on their own two feet and be the functional adult that we would expect.
The world building is fascinating, combining the extraterrestrial vibes and technological advances we would see in a sci fi with the deity-based magic and fate themes that we would see in a fantasy. The actual descriptions and scene setting are thorough enough to ground you in the locations without taking away from the characters or events, but it still feels like a beautiful, real place. It’s an environment I look forward to exploring more in future books in the series.
The plot itself gives us the best of both worlds (pun fully intended)— we get a sweet, steamy romance arc that fully wraps up by the end of the book, but set into a larger overarching plot that spans across multiple books. It’s the same style that was used in the “Tempt the Gods” series, and if it turns out even half as well it’ll be amazing. This also means that you can jump in at almost any point in the series and still know what’s going on. I really enjoy interconnected standalones like this because you get all the goodness and satisfaction of a true standalone with the bigger storyline of a multi-book series. As usual, the plot here was entertaining and held my interest incredibly well; I finished the whole thing in a day!
The way I squealed when I found out that the author was gracing us with a brand new series should probably concern me, but I have no regrets. Having finished this first book, it was a completely justified reaction and I *will* do so again when the release date for book 2 is announced. In the meantime, if you like sci fi, fantasy, soul mates, and an incredibly entertaining cast of secondary characters, then this is the book for you!
We have Bellamy and Soren, who are matched as perfect soul mates, also known as paranimas. But at the beginning, they seem to have very different ideas of what that means. Bellamy thinks she’ll end up unalived by his hand, and Soren thinks he’ll become so p0ssessive of her that he would do anything for her. But, they also hate each other.
The world building is done very well in this story. Despite it being a dual POV, we spend more time in Bellamy’s head and watch the world building as she discovers new places. We also over time learn about this unique magic that binds them together. Literally known as the Bond, it acts almost like a third person in their relationship. While Bellamy and Soren seem to try and resist the bond pushing them together, they also have delicious banter and tension! There is another set of perfect soul mates in this story in their friends Esme and Ford, who seem to have no problem resisting the other. Bellamy notices they can keep so much space between themselves, while she feels like climbing out of her skin if she’s away from Soren for too long (too long being a 3 hour car ride in separate cars).
My absolute favorite character in this whole mess is the Bond! It provides such a colorful commentary and acts like a dirty best friend, egging them on to just jump each other to satisfy it. The Bond is also super fiery, pushing in their more violent tendencies (and adding some of its own) if someone tries to flirt, touch, or hurt their match.
I was absolutely SCREAMING when Bellamy and Soren finally decide it’s not worth it to resist the Bond any longer and give in to their desires! But! This then starts a whole segment where I was feeling so much stress for them! It seems like the only way to bring peace to their planet (who has been at war with another planet for decades) is to marry off Bellamy to the prince of the other planet. Of course neither Bellamy nor Soren want this outcome, and try to pull away from each other to preserve their feelings. My heart was living in my throat for so much of this section, so much stress at what would happen to them!
The story continues to build into our climax of the beginning of more ferocious fighting, which will continue throughout the series. But luckily for my stress levels, the main conflict for Bellamy and Soren has been resolved and they can stay together.
I absolutely fell in love with Rory Scott’s writing during her Tempt the Gods series, another set of interconnected standalone stories about the children of the Greek and Roman gods. In this series, she blends fantasy with some sci-fi elements very well and does not make it overwhelming for the reader.
Definitely check this out, especially if you like enemies to lovers, forced proximity, one bed, soul mates, and reluctant allies!

OMG. THIS BOOK. I’m obsessed. I went in not knowing what to expect since I hadn’t read anything by Rory L. Scott before, but WOW, this blew me away. Like, where’s the next book? I need it yesterday. 😭
The tension between Bellamy and Soren? SO FREAKING GOOD. I’m a sucker for fated mates, and this book gave me everything I didn’t know I needed—soul bonds, insane chemistry, and a slow burn so good it had me kicking my feet and giggling like an idiot. Plus, their Bond (which, yes, is practically a character itself) had me laughing out loud the entire time. It’s like a snarky best friend that’s also spicy and a little feral. Honestly, I’d read a book just about the Bond.
Speaking of our leads, Bellamy and Soren are everything. Bellamy, the dark-haired royal who’s working through layers of conditioning and vulnerability, and Soren, Tom Blyth as young Coriolanus Snow? YES, PLEASE (if you're not running now, WHAT ARE YOU EVEN DOING??), are a pairing I couldn’t get enough of. Their banter? Perfection. Their possessiveness over each other? Kindle-grippingly good. I’m still recovering from the scenes where they finally give in to their bond.
The enemies-to-lovers aspect was handled brilliantly, though it leans more toward rivals or reluctant allies. Their history felt intriguing, but I’d have loved just a little more backstory to flesh out their pre-Match dynamic. Still, watching them struggle against temptation and fight their Bond was immensely satisfying.
And the worldbuilding—WOW. Rory doesn’t just build a world; she paints it with stunning detail. From the cold, militaristic Vir to the serene beauty of Muli, the contrasts in setting are vivid and symbolic. The political intrigue and high-stakes action keep the pacing tight, but it’s the romance that truly steals the show. The lore feels rich and purposeful, with no plot holes or unnecessary exposition to bog things down.
I also loved how the Bond wasn’t just a random concept—it’s alive and basically stirs up chaos 24/7. It’s fiery, funny, and gets super spicy when anyone even looks at Bellamy or Soren the wrong way. Honestly, some of its commentary was my favorite part of the book. 😂
Also, can we take a minute for Soren’s vibe? Blonde buzzcut, nose ring, teasing energy… it shouldn’t work, but it does. Oh, it does. And Bellamy? Loved seeing her grow as a person and let herself love and be loved. Together, they’re pure magic.
This is one of the strongest starts to a sci-fi fantasy romance series I’ve read in ages. And with teases about Ford and Esme’s story (tortured hero, rejected mates, forced proximity—SIGN ME UP), I’m ready to throw my money at Rory Scott ASAP.
If you’re into slow-burn fated mates romances with killer chemistry, great banter, and a world that feels fresh and exciting, A Cruel Kindness is for you. Go read it now. You’ll thank me later. 😍
Thanks to Rory Scott and Love Notes PR for the eARC—I’m officially a fan for life! ❤️
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read an ARC of her book 💕
THIS BOOK IS AMAZING. That could pretty much be the whole review but I’ll talk a little bit more about it, but you should go into it knowing that it’s amazing.
📍The story is set in two planets, Virterra and Muliterra, which are connected by the Bridge. The two planets are at war and thanks to the crossings our character do from Virterra to Muliterra, we get to know the differences between the planets and also get some intel on their views about this war.
✍️This is an incredibly well-written story, with a detailed worldbuilding that makes it super easy for you to follow what’s happening at all times. We have two povs: Soren and Bellamy, which means we get the full picture of what’s going on without the story dragging on, but instead the dynamic between these two characters makes for a very entertaining read. The author has masterfully created a world where everything that happens and everyone you meet are relevant, and while she unravels a lot mysteries, she keeps you on your toes by refusing to share everything. The story ends on a sort of cliffhanger that leaves you wishing the second book would come out as soon as you finish this one!
👥The main characters are Soren and Bellamy, who perfectly embody the magnet theory on how opposites attract. Soren is rough, quick to anger and blunt, never one to keep his opinions to himself, while Bellamy knows how to control any situation thanks to her royal background, which allows her to be polite even when she’s angry. Nonetheless, as the story progresses we see them crack at each other’s walls until all the barriers are down, and we discover Soren’s vulnerability and Bellamy’s resilience. Moreover, I have to say Ford, Esme and Freya are side characters that we meet during this story who will undoubtedly steal your heart as well, both as characters individually and as friends to our main couple!
🖇️All in all, it’s been a real pleasure reading this story, full of good banter between all of the characters, a good premise and an even better development thanks to an author who knew exactly what she wanted to tell, and has the craft to write it incredibly well!
3.5 stars This was my first novel by this author, and I am absolutely looking forward to book 2 in series. Thankfully, the epilogue gave a small taste, and it's exactly the couple that I was hoping it would be. I can't wait to get into their story. Back to this novel, it felt like a slow-burn romance between our two main characters, Soren and Belllamy, set in a sci-fi environment. They are both royals who have been drafted in a war to protect their people from a sister planet because of the scheming of the powers that be.
In this world, their are different levels of mating bonds, ranging from casual bonds to perfect soul mate bonding. the bonding appears as a matching tattoo on the couple's and can only occur one at a time. This is absolutely the most unique take on a fated mate I have ever seen, and I absolutely loved it. The bond is literally it's own sentient character, capable of communicating with its hosts and motivating them to care for and protect their partners. As you can imagine, resisting the bond is futile, but our characters won't go down without a fight to maintain control over their desires and hearts. But the bond wants what it wants.
Outside of the romance, our characters are caught up in a scheme to bring peace to their world, but eventually realize that they are way in over their heads. There is a healthy amount of dialogue between the characters, which I liked as it also helped to disseminate information to the reader without feeling info dumpy. The side characters really stood out, and I'm hoping that their will be a book for Freya, or at the very least, we get more of her story in book 2.
I enjoyed getting glimpses of the politics of this world and wanted to see a tab big more politicking as well as the war itself. However, considering the cliffhanger this novel ended on, I can only imagine that their will be a lot more of that in the next installment of this series.
Thank you to Love Notes PR for the arc of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This Book ARC was such a fun and sexy ride! Rating: 4,5 ⭐️
This book is 🔥! It is the love triangle you didn’t know you needed 🖤. Bellamy (FMC) - Soren (MMC) - The (soulmatch) Bond. The Bond is their inner voice that comes to life when Bellamy and Soren are paired together and find out that they are a 💯 % soulmatch, the highest match on the planet. They have a history together as both being born royals and circling in the same high society. But their history is difficult which makes this Bond and the Forced proximity a pain in the butt for both. They are forced to be together daily and the Bond drives them crazy. The Bond wants them to own their feelings and fully commit to the Bond. Let me tell you this Bond is hilarious. The Bond made me laugh so hard! I just want to be besties with this Bond 😄.
The world is set on two planets 🪐. The two planets are in a long raging war. The paranimas/soulmatches are crucial to this war, so Bellamy and Soren are send to the other planet to help their people in this war with their strengts and abilities.
The way they travel between the planets it gives a vibe mix of the bifrost from the Marvel Universe and the Port key from Harry Potter. The way of travel is so well described that it is like you are traveling there.
When on the other planet in the encampment Bellamy and Soren are forced to share a bed. The slowburn is burning 🔥 and when they give in to the soulmatch and the Bond the spice is spicing people!!!
A Cruel Kindness is a very easy read with such a cool world and characters. I just could not putt this book down. Rory has such a cool writing style. The banter is such an asset in this book.
A Cruel Kindness is a stand alone in an overarching plot of a series. The book wraps up the story of the FMC: Bellamy and the MMC: Soren at the end of the book. The next book will be featuring Ford and Esme the other paranima/soulmatch couple. This second book can’t come fast enough 🥰!
Order your copy now! You definitely want to read A Cruel Kindness.
I had to take a few days after finishing this book to collect my thoughts because HOLY MOLY it was so good! Rory Scott is a queen at making dynamic characters that are easy to fall in love with, and worlds that are rich and well built. This is no different in A Cruel Kindness.
Bellamy and Soren. Both are from Royal lines on their planet Virterra. However, Soren blames Bellamy’s family for his conscription into the army. This army is responsible for defending a portal (called The Bridge) to their twin planet Muliterra in an ongoing 20-year war. Our story starts when Bellamy joins the armed forces, against her family's wishes, and ends up with a Soulmate Mark that will link her to Soren forever. Soren and Bellamy have to navigate their complicated past while fighting a bond that wants them to be as close together as possible for as long as possible.
Bellamy is such a strong protagonist, and you can tell from the get-go that she can be empathetic and compassionate without being a pushover. Our girl has got some layers and the reader is discovering them along with Soren. Speaking of Soren, he is all tough exterior with a somewhat reluctant soft spot for Bellamy. It is interesting to watch him deal with his preconceived notions of Bellamy while quickly falling in love with who he thought was his enemy. Their banter is witty and sarcastic, which I am a sucker for!
The thing that sets this relationship dynamic apart from other romantasy/romantic sci-fi books is the bond. It is like all those intrusive thoughts mixed with a little bit of Venmon, IMO. It makes for some great dialogue and fun situations. I can’t wait to see how the bond is explored in the next book Ford and Esme since there seem to be some repressed feelings and maybe a rejection of the bond.
The world-building was excellent, I could picture every world like it was a movie. The overarching plot for the series was a little slow to start, but excellent once you got to it. This is largely in part due to the world-building & character development.
Thank you @lovenotes.pr and @authorroryscott for gifting me this ARC! All opinions are my own.
Two sister worlds at war, connected by The Bridge, a way to travel between space and time. Bellamy and Soren, fated mates, with troubling missions, will they be able to help usher in peace or will war continue? Will they find they can resist their bond or will it be undeniable and all consuming?
If Rory Scott was a fisherman, she landed me hook, line, and sinker! I binged this book in two days. I read the first half in one sitting and didn’t go to bed until 5am.
The world building is well done, it’s not over the top and dragging on, but it’s not lacking either. She describes the differences between the sister planets, and you can imagine it clearly. It felt like how we might imagine Earth and Venus if people lived there also.
The characters and their situations and their development is great. There are very head strong, alpha types, which fits the military way, but they are also controlled by this outside bonding from their deities creating fated mates. I love the unique naming for this concept and how it played out with markings. It was so neat and I really enjoyed how she describes the marks like tattoos! I really enjoy when you get the inner most dialogue of a character and we benefit of getting it from Bellamy and Soren. The times she created their feelings/thoughts were clear and felt realistic without leaving you with that sense of rambling.
The tension, good heavens it was so thick you could cut it with a knife and it still was solidly there! Even when the slow burn culminates, there’s even more tension on its heels in a million other ways. Not to mention she leaves it on this cliffhanger that I had an inkling of but the full scope of which made it so overwhelming good!
I have literally no complaints about this story, even with having some predictable moments, what book doesn’t have those. Could I just be on a book high? Maybe, but I loved it and it’s a 5 star book no question for me!
Reading A Cruel Kindness felt like stepping into a whirlwind of tension, intrigue, and simmering emotion. From the first chapter, the book pulls you into a universe rich with fantasy and sci-fi elements, weaving two war-torn planets, an ancient myth, and an incredibly complex connection between its protagonists.
The concept of the Bridge and the paranimas—Soul Mates who are destined to share a bond deeper than anything else—is beautifully executed. It’s a trope we’ve seen before, but Rory L. Scott brings a fresh intensity to it. What happens when two people tied by fate don’t want to be tied to each other? This isn’t a love story where sparks fly instantly—it’s a slow burn, full of friction and reluctant cooperation, and that’s what makes it so compelling.
Bellamy and Soren are deeply flawed, deeply human, and incredibly easy to root for despite their flaws. They’re thrown together in the ultimate test of their resolve, and the forced proximity trope is used perfectly here. Their clashing personalities, along with the weight of their family histories and the war looming over them, create a dynamic that kept me hooked.
The worldbuilding is lush and intricate without being overwhelming. Scott masterfully balances the grand scale of the conflict with the intimacy of the characters’ journey. Every detail, from the lore of the gods to the tension between the sister planets, feels purposeful and alive.
What truly stands out is the emotional depth. A Cruel Kindness isn’t just about a war or a reluctant romance—it’s about trust, forgiveness, and finding common ground when everything in your world tells you not to.
If you love stories with reluctant allies, star-crossed connections, and a mix of heart-pounding action and slow-burning romance, this book will leave you breathless. It’s the kind of story that lingers with you long after you’ve turned the last page, and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the series takes us.
First off, just wanted to quickly thank Love Notes PR for sending me this ARC. I have read several books by author Rory Scott and I must say that this book is my absolute favorite. Rory Scott definitely knows how to make me fall in love with her MMCs and as a reader who notoriously falls in love with dark-haired morally grey men, I was a bit apprehensive about Soren Rystrom ONLY because he’s blonde. That’s right…BLONDE. BUT I needed to give him a chance and I cannot say enough how glad I am that I did. If you’re like me and biased against blonde MMCs (*cough* Tamlin) take this as a sign to give this book a chance, Soren is just…delicious? He’s tall, broody, possessive and an all around badass. As I got to know his character I felt like maybe I was his “paranima” too, I definitely wanted to be 😭
This book has everything you could ever wish for in a book. It has alternating POV, which I personally enjoy because I like seeing how both protagonists are secretly feeling about one another. It is also enemies to lovers and the TENSION between these two characters was *chef’s kiss* Putting myself in the FMC Bellamy’s shoes, I would not have been able to restrain myself from Soren’s little flirtatious quips. I found myself giddy every time he would hit her with a one liner or when he’d get all alpha and possessive over her. We also have a one bed situation, which just adds to the tension between these two characters and again, it’s amazing. I don’t want to ruin this review by giving out any spoilers in case anyone reading this is on the fence about starting but this one line said by Bellamy describing her “paranima” should be enough to pique someone’s interest about this yummy MMC, “Soren was a little unhinged, though I found that to be one of his better qualities.” He is a little unhinged ESPECIALLY when it comes to protecting what is his. If you were looking for a sign to read this book, THIS IS IT.
A war between two sister planets has been going on for 20 years. A bridge connecting these two planets, to send people between them, is the center of this war. Soul mates known as Paranimas, can cross between the worlds almost seamlessly. With years of history and family betrayal between them, an unlikely match forms between Bellamy and Soren. In trying to help stop the war, they also battle with the bond between them.
Whew.. this was a read, let me tell you. At the very beginning, I felt like this was a tad repetitive BUT I understood once I got into the rhythm of the story. This fantasy did such an amazing job of tying in sci-fi attributes without making it too confusing or overwhelming. Rory does an amazing job at explaining how the worlds work (this is where I was overwhelmed at first but quickly adjusted, I'm not used to writing that dives in from the first page. It's refreshing). The world-building was phenomenal, I was able to easily understand the locations and politics as they were brought up. Soren and Bellamy, whew. These two were getting me so immersed in the story. Along with the side characters, there were virtually no plot holes or gaps within the characters. I will say the tension, now that was some good writing. You got me over here screaming for something to happen.
I am SO excited for the next book in this series, Esme and Ford had me wanting to know so much more about them through this story. (see what I mean these side characters in this book had such a chokehold over me).
My rating: ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ Spice Rating: 🌶️ My favorite tropes of this read: forced proximity, one bed, touch her and you 💀
Thank you so much to Rory for allowing me to ARC read this beautiful story. I am going to be impatiently waiting for book two, and anything else you may publish!
i haven't had the best of experiences with modern sci-fi books, but boy did this one take me by surprise. the plot is so well written (without any holes), the characters are likeable (esp our FMC Bellamy!!), and there's a found family aspect in a friend group amidst a cold war setting!
i usually don't go out of my way to read books with the 'fated mates' trope, mainly due to how poorly the communication & logistics are handled, often times bordering on toxic possessive vibes. thankfully, ACK did not venture that way! there is a healthy dose of possessiveness / jealousy that comes with the trope, but neither of the MCs are classified alpha a-holes (phewww.)
the world building is great! although, i was a bit confused at the beginning, everything gets explained in due time (minus the cliffhanger ending which continues on over to the next book in the series ofc.) Bellamy & Soren's connection is by all means, a slowwww burn (think intense attraction, denial, reluctant allies, single bed, flirting, etc), and i ate it up sooooo good!! the book does focus a lot more on the romance part, though it doesn't affect the plotline, but keep that in mind! i usually dislike when that happens, but apparently, this author has a penchant for changing my mind. and yes, i do recommend reading this book!!!
there was this scene where Soren got nicked in the forehead, causing Bellamy to freak out over a *good* handful of chapters, which made me laugh icl. like girlie relax, it's not that deep! XD i also didn't get attached to the characters or super invested in the lore, but that's that!
esme & ford intrigue me sm ohgod, and that sneak peek into their book ??? oh, i am SAT for the 2nd book.
thank you Rory Scott and LoveNotes PR for this ARC!
The bridge is the main pathway that connects two different planets. By sending people over the bridge, what should have been a friendly interaction turned anything but. What really happened is a 20 year war. The best weapon to fight in the war are paraminas, aka, soul mates as they can handle the bridges effects better. Bellamy and Soren have a complicated history full of betrayal and hatred before they even knew they were soul mates. So when they find out, they have to learn how to deal with this new and confusing situation. Together, they will challenge what a soul mate is and how to get the two planets to stop fighting.
I don’t read many sci-fi books but this really caught my attention. I was curious about what happened between Bellamy and Soren. I knew it had to be bad for there to be so much hatred right at the beginning and oh boy. I liked how this wasn’t a story where they immediately fell for each other and that they had to get used to working with each other.
The one thing I found confusing was the little voice in both of their heads that were really possessive. While I knew that they hated each other, when ever the little voice would say something like “I will hurt whoever looks at him wrong” and other possessive things, it took a while to separate the two. With the war, each planet claims that the other started the war but we never found out which planet started.
Between Soren and Bellamy’s point of view, I think I preferred Soren. I still liked Bellamy and her point of view but Sorens pov was just really fun to read. I thought this was a truly unique book and I can’t wait to read Ford & Esmes story in book 2!
I don't think I could find the words to describe the feelings I felt once I finished this book. Yet if I had to choose, it would be phenomenal. I devoured this book in one sitting, staying up till 3.AM to finish the novel. I was in awe of Scott's writing style as soon as I read the first two chapters. There was something so beautiful about the way Scott managed to describe the scenario, making the reader feel as if they were in that room. As a fantasy book, you need a bit more concentration to fully grasp the workings of its world. However, the way the novel was written provides you with enough information at a time to help you understand the plot. The plot of this novel was a unique idea for me as it wasn't something I had read before. Bellamy and Soren are bound, forced to test the theory of soul mates. Having to fight the tension caused by the bond while also finding a way to bring peace to their planet. Another thing I loved was the slow burn within their relationship. As soul mates, Scott could have easily made them form a connection from the get-go. Yet, I love that while they are constantly looking out for each other, they hold the tension that is expected from them while also forming a true emotional connection alongside it. I love that they are given time to truly bond as partners before taking the next step in their relationship. I also adore the other characters introduced to us. It's interesting to see their dynamics with the main characters as well as on their own. I'm interested in carrying on this series and finding out what happens next.
Thank you to the author and Love Notes Pr for giving me a free copy in return for an honest review.
