Blade of the Blue Star is the first book in this series, and I certainly hope it isn't representative of the rest of the series. It's clear this book received no proofreading, since there are a litteral ton of continuity errors in this book. In at least two places, someone performed an action, then in the next paragraph, they performed the same action again, which was supposed to be a one and done thing. Twice, we ran into a scene where the participants in the scene left the area, and in the very next paragraph, they were back in the same spot, leaving the area (again) after that scene was over. Multiple places where something was stated as fact, then later on in the book, we see that "fact" is indeed not the case. Really poor proofreading in this one took a book that could have been really good, and turned it into one that barely rates 3 stars in my book.
On the other hand, if you can get past all of that (and a few other issues), you'll see that the story is actually a pretty good one. I don't know if there was another series that this series follows, but if there isn't, then this book is even more out of touch, since it starts with a demon invasion that presumably has several races on the ropes, and nobody can handle it. Then, it all gets solved, just like that. The rest of the book is the one who put a stop to it all sending his adopted heir off to the academy for training. The rest of the story is all about how this heir interacts with academy life, making friends, enemies, and stirring up trouble either by design, or by accident. Either way, this part of the book Really should have been it's own storyline. Perhaps the author needed to write a trilogy about the demon invasion, then make this book the first in a second trilogy about what comes after, or if that isn't wanted/possible, then just throw out all the demon stuff from the get go, and have the story start after (or just as) he's been named heir to the duke. That would eliminate a lot of superfluous information that (as it turns out) was meaningless to the story.
In any case, I don't currently know if I'll read more in this series or not, I really don't care much about what happens to any of the characters at this point, since the author didn't really make much of an effort to invest the reader in any of them.
I might read more, just because I don't like leaving storylines unread, but if I do, I doubt it will be soon.
For what it's worth, I did like the story as a whole, I just didn't care for it's implementation.

Pretty much what other reviews. Bad Continuity and Low Effort MC

First off, there is a big demon war attacking the empire and to kill the Demon Lord a group of like 20 people take him on? You'd think they are the best of the best right? Yet we learn later on the MC is only in the top 3,000 swordsmen of the empire maybe top 1000 his instructor says. Where are these other 1,000 sword's men? Then you see other people as strong or stronger then the people who fought the Demon Lord, where were they while this was going on?

Like the MC was there and a big part yet mages in his entrance exam launch attacks that could take him down and they are year 1 students? Not really believable.

Then you get to the second part of the book and continuity goes down hill. One minute he'll be talking to someone and walking to class, next he's back sitting down and having a different conversation with them and getting all romantic. A romance that comes out of no where.

Then he'll be joining the a group for class looking over at the princess leading her own group but on the next page he's joining a group with the princess and other people? As if his group of the last page didn't exist. Yet he also takes command of the group? With the Princess? Sure, because surely the Princess wouldn't be in charge over a Duke's heir.

He constantly promises to do better, but starts making up stuff for exams, putting no effort into anything that isn't fighting. Makes no effort to befriend other Duchy nobles the whole reason he went there to make connections and alliances for the future.

Honestly this MC shouldn't be an heir, he should be a Knight of the Duchy or Baron, something low to make connections with other minor houses.

Either he needs to decide he's a Duke to be and doesn't care about how people see him and HE will set trends and etiquette and decide how to act or he needs to start forming real alliances.

Either embrace the role of the Barbarian Duke who will go to war if insulted and doesn't care for courtly manners or give up the whole making friends with low nobles and start becoming a fancy Duke focused on selling his sense of self for the good of the Duchy.

Disjointed and repetitive

I made it 87% of the way through this book before i had to stop.

So, let's start with the good. The MC isn't egotistical or arrogant.

Now the bad. In some places, things happen one way, then you turn the page, and it's like the first way never happened. This happens SEVERAL times throughout the book. The writing doesn't follow a very coherent timeline. The MC is expected to master a Light spell in a day or two? He wrote a 1200-word essay with made-up references in what seems like an hour WITH make-believe references because nobody is going to check? He promises every 4 or 5 pages to do better at everything, but then doesn't because he can't be bothered to put in the effort?

I tried to finish this book but it was painful to get as far as I did. I gave 2 stars because there is some substance here. It just gets ruined with the janky timeline and the constant promises to do better, but deciding that he doesn't need to do better.

My favourite part was when they were having the climactic battle (which is at the start) and then it just turned into the aftermath and everyone was talking about it. "Perhaps a clever literary technique?" I thought. But no, a few chapters later (chapters of nothing at all, naturally) we're back halfway through, defeating the demon lord. On the occasions when it did make sense it was boring and repetitive. How many times can you go to dinner and complain about it? And they've used that "my essay is supposed to be five pages and I only have two" trick of putting huge spaces in every two sentences. You're not fooling anyone, Jenkins! Write it out properly. Five pages. And another three pages for laziness!

Good start

I liked this new series from this author. There was only one major annoying mistake where a chapter repeated but it was short and easy to get by. I was dismayed by the slow start but I actually ended up enjoying the slow build to the academy life. I also like the nods to people from other worlds thriving in this universe. I like most characters but especially Baldric. My only issue is with the numbering system that characters seem to have.it all seems purposeful and totally random. I have no idea who is powerful but I do from the description but then the numbers suggest differently. Maybe an explanation guide would be helpful? Looking forward to next book.

This was a simple mess of writing. 8th grade reading at best.

The plot became a Harry Potter clone right down to new school with two boys and girl. Start fine and had some interesting plot lines it could have followed, however, the MC was forced into a predictable predetermined path and much of the story was fluff and obvious tropes. The story became very bland and just meandered along, without any decisive plot points. If you're in 8th grade this might seem exciting, as an adult I don't think I even care what happens to read the next book. It's a simple story that takes no imagination to read that becomes drawn out and boring towards the end.

badly needs continuity editing

I only made it to about 60% of the story. I actually enjoyed the premise, and a lot of theaction and activities. The biggest problem was continuity. Days and happening were all mixed up. The orders were bad. One thing happened, and then the author says a few days later, and then yesterday, I just couldn’t keep dealing. if this story receives a better edit, I will happily come back and finish the story.

Entertaining Read

Reinhardt is the adopted heir of a Duke. After serving with distinction in the demon wars, he is sent to a leadership academy to learn the skills he will need to govern the Duchy. Battle, diplomacy, etiquette, and relationships ensue. I like the action, humor, and intrigue. I look forward to the next book.

Interesting read

This just seemed to have internal issues such as being the first to finish and then walking through a door to a roomful of people who had also finished. The commoner who seems to come from a bloodline. Just kind of funky and the hook at the end just doesn't make sense.

Book needs to be edited and problems fixed.

This book is disjointed. For instance characters walk away frm each other then are back together talking then walking away again. In the middle of a scene things shift to another scene and then shift back again. Contrary statements exist.

A punch in the face doesn't solve everything !!!

Enjoyable , Reinhardt the MC starts off being annoying but improved when.he gets to the academy but he has a sever lack of focus and priorities which is irritating , a good proof reader would improve the book a lot as there is repetition and confusion of events on several occasions.

Choppy

The ideas are good. The flow is not. I am not sure it was edited before publishing. The protagonist has 2 origin stories. Paragraphs next to each other have contradictions. The plot frequently jumps back and repeats with different words. If Kal read it out loud, I think the flow flaws would become obvious.
Good luck with your editing! ;-D

Well

Would actually rate this a 3 or less if not for the rating standards. While interesting enough to read the MC reads as uncharacteristically young for a supposed war veteran. His attitude is frankly conceited and childish. Leaves room for character growth which is good but so far has not really had any improvement at all making it a harder read

It's not terrible but I'm pretty sure this was written by AI and not cleaned up. There are several points in this and the next book where the story loses cohesion or it's as if the author forgot they already described an event only for it to be retold.

DNF. Lost interest. This was all over the place switching story lines chapter to chapter. There was zero flow chapter to chapter. Read if you want to be confused and have this book in your library for weeks.

Diggin' the premise of the MC's story. He was found and not some secret noble... but through his own efforts he proved he's more noble than those born with noble blood. Looking forward to seeing how Reinhardt navigates the unfolding drama within the Empire as the Duke's heir. I cannot wait.

good story….reaaaaaalllyyyy needs editing

Like a lot. It’s to the point where I don’t even think the author proof read everything cohesively…it’s choppy. Chapter plots randomly jump around…just not good. Hope the author figures it out for the later books

Fun read, though I'd shift your expectations around this feeling more YA or even young reader than a gritty adult narrative.

Tough for me to like the MC

In the first couple of chapters, the MC comes across as a angry petulant child. He gets better but has no social skills.

No solid base.

The characters have no solid base. This is just several scenes happening one after the other. Several points are just rehashed of his previous series.
