After a fruitless battle leaves the goddesses ravaged and weary, Jedda and Dimity realize their unpreparedness and the need to master their divine powers. While Anzac and the Dark Goddess work tirelessly to regain their strength, Dimity is still desperate to find Elouthera, lest she be outnumbered again for her next godly encounter and likely not live to tell the tale.
But when earthly engagements entangle with Dimity’s divine plans, things get more complicated than she wants them to be — especially with the goddess’s growing attraction toward a selfless mortal.
With a score to settle, Dimity and Jedda must hone their bodies into power-wielding vessels. But even all the training in the world may not be enough to win the imminent war if they cannot navigate their mortal responsibilities.
This book is the 2nd in the Daughter of Lazarus series. I'm keeping it spoiler free, because there are some twists and turns that you won't see coming! I enjoyed learning more about my favorite characters as this second book expands on the personalities and thoughts of each. Aimelie really came to life in this book and is now my favorite character. I can't wait to see how she deals with the ending of book 2 and where it takes her in book 3. She's coming into her own in this book, not just a sibling of dieties, but a force to be reckoned with in her own right. Somehow Arden makes you feel sympathy for Dria, even though you should hate her totally. Dria's love for Desmond makes her vulnerable and more human. I love the relationship between Anna and Oliver, it's a slow burn that keeps getting better! Overall, I really enjoyed the fleshed-out characters and getting to know them better in this book. It makes me want to go back and re-read the first book over again! If you are a fan of fantasy, political intrigue mixed with romance, and a fast-paced plot, give this series a look!
Now that I was familiar with the characters and places (this is a sequel and it pick up right where the first book left us) I was able to enjoy the story so much more.
I liked the way the new characters and places were introduced, and while the book was still a bit confusing at times, it was way easier to keep track of everything and to see how the author developed the world and the magic system.
All in all, a satisfying sequel that answered many of my question and that really moved the plot along (I hate when I read a volume where things barely happen so we are left close to where the story begun).
Personally, while I found both books to be confusing at times which made the reading a bit harder, I found the story compelling enough to want to read the next volumes and find out what gonna happen next.
