The Wolf vs The Vampire

Rate this book
Everyone thinks I’m sweet and innocent… but I’m the one who ate the big bad wolf.

I’ve been searching for a place that feels like home my whole life, and I think I’ve found it. I’m in the big city, on a mission to save vulnerable supernatural kids — just like I used to be — in my new job as an Otherworld Child Protection caseworker.

Because after our magical apocalypse, there’s a lot of kids that need saving.

I just need to avoid Romeo Zarayan, the Lord of Shadows and heir to the Jupiter fortune.

He murdered my Aunt. One day, when I’m strong enough, I’ll get my revenge.

When one of my clients — Bonnie, a girl with strange-smelling blood — goes missing, the hunt takes me a little too close to the Warlock for comfort.

If I want to save Bonnie, I’ll have to set my quest for vengeance aside and work with him. But if I get the chance, I'll kill him.

If he doesn’t kill me first…

Another brilliant story by Lauretta Hignett!

Wow, ever since we were introduced to the werewolf cub Daphne in Chloe's books, I've been fascinated by her. The poor traumatized thing that became a killer at a young age, but still retained some innocence.

Now we get to see her grown up. She is kind, loving, sweet, and innocent, but still a killer when she needs to be. With an alpha like Dwayne the chaos god goose, how could you not be?

We see her, fresh from school going on to be a social worker, to help kids like her that were severely abused. However, she is stepping into a city rife with supernatural politics. How will she cope, being who she is?

The story is brilliant, from Daphne's first missteps, her sexy nemesis, to her solution for everything, and of course Dwayne. You can't forget Dwayne, who steals every scene he is in! Anyway, you don't want to miss this new series, it's going to be fire!

Oh so good. Daphne, the little fiesty werewolf child, is all grown up. She’s been through a lot since we last saw her in Chloe’s series. She’s off to start a new life and job in Philadelphia.

This had everything I needed in a book. Daphne is such an entertaining character. She’s honest and optimistic, capable and homicidal.

For more entertainment and mayhem, Dwayne, the chaos goose, is there for Daphne. Oh and don’t get me started on the pigeon whack-a-mole.

Whilst entertaining, there’s lots of depth and emotion to the story too. Just a perfect mix.

I was excited to start this book and read more about Daphne, the cute wolf shifter from Chloe’s books.
I’ve got to admit I was a bit confused to start….. Possible spoilers in this paragraph ….. The last I read, Daphne was a child, now she’s an adult, has spent years jumping from realm to realm, there has been a major disruption in the supernatural world. I even double checked to see if I’d missed a book, which I’m pretty sure I haven’t. But as the book goes on, most of my confusion went away as things got explained.
Daphne has just arrived in Philadelphia to start a new life as a child care worked and get with her witch boyfriend. Unfortunately, after an adventure, when she meets the boyfriend, it seems that she was under false impressions.
Thinking she was alone, she is extremely happy and relieved to see Dwayne, her goose alpha. With his help things improved.
She is also in Philadelphia to kill the head witch in retaliation of his killing Aunt Marche. Thanks to the “master”, head alpha of the city, Daphne is forced to work with Romeo. Things get interesting from there.
This is a fantastic book and I’m so glad I read it. There is action, humour (Dwayne especially), great characters and interactions, possible romance – everything you could ask for.
Well worth the read

Not the book for me. It read so naive and sometimes childish.

Daphne all grown up. She does not disappoint.

All the promise Daphne showed s as a six year old in the Chloe West series is fulfilled here. She is just a bloodthirsty as ever but still manages to retain her naive innocent personality. She believes the best of everybody as she always said "everyone gets one chance" but you don't get to let her down twice. Daphne is in a new city to start her first job as a newly qualified social worker. She doesn't get the best start when all her plans are.disrupted but things take a better turn when Dwayne (a goose and a God of Chaos also from Chloes's series) joins her in Philadelphia. Threatening alpha's, deadly warlocks and witches who believe Daphne is mentally challenged..................yes.....her new life is.off to.a.great start...............

I'd forgotten how much I love this author's books! And this was no exception - in fact - it might be my favourite yet.

Daphne's all grown up and a delightful mixture of psycho and lovely. Romeo, her nemesis, is a delightful enigma, and the slow burn enemies to lovers is spot on already.

Dwayne steals the show, along with a couple of developing side characters, and the plot is fast moving, well-paced and engaging.

I said in a past review for a book in a connected series that this author hits all the right spots for me as an urban fantasy lover, and I'm delighted that this was the same.

Every time I read a book by this author, I’m so glad I found her since I just love her writing. This latest features Daphne, and I am so enchanted by her. She’s so very upbeat, but you know that underneath the surface lies a killer which can come out at any moment. Add in Romeo who really pushes her buttons especially when the subject of her aunt comes up, and we get so many sparks…a moments of anticipation of wondering if the killer will come out. Daphne and Dwayne are a hoot together, and I love that Daphne can seem a little unstable in a completely fun way. This latest is a wonderful addition to this author’s other books, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next with Daphne, Dwayne and Romeo. Highly recommend.

The Wolf vs The Vampire is the first book in the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth series and the first book by Lauretta Hignett for me—and what a wild ride it was!

This book is different, in the best way possible. It’s funny, weird, and unapologetically quirky, with characters that immediately draw you in and leave you wanting more.

The humor is sharp, the world-building intriguing, and the dialogue brimming with snark. Here’s a taste:
“Have you ever met a vegan ghoul?” I raised an eyebrow. “I have. I mean, Terry didn’t survive for long, but still, he tried, and that’s the main thing.” “Mad,” Sheila said. “Totally nuts.”

The truth is, I fell through a slipway when I was seven years old, ended up in a wild-magic realm, and spent the next twelve years of my life trying to find my way home. I’ve fallen through hundreds of alien worlds. I’ve fought my way out of dozens of hell-dimensions. Hell doesn’t scare me.” I shrugged. “Not anymore.”

Chloe taught me well. You didn’t want to look like a hot badass; you just needed to look a little unstable, like you were in a world of your own and you wouldn’t be happy to be yanked out of it. You didn’t want to look in need of help, because someone might approach you, and try to help. You just had to look a little unhinged. Just a fraction. Funnily enough, it came quite naturally to me.
We follow Daphne, a caseworker for Otherworld Child Protection, as she arrives in the big city, determined to make a difference. But her job quickly proves to be anything but simple—especially with her chaotic sidekick, Dywane the goose 🪿 , causing just as much trouble as he does good. Throw in Romeo Zarayan, Lord of Shadows and Daphne’s least favorite person in existence, and you have a supernatural adventure filled with chaos, death💀, mayhem 🔥, and the kind of banter that keeps you hooked.

If you’re looking for spice 🌶️, this book doesn’t have much of that, but it makes up for it with razor-sharp humor 🤭, crude language 🗯️, and unexpectedly soft moments 💖 that add depth to the madness. I had a blast reading it and will definitely continue the series!

The Wolf vs the Vampire by Lauretta Hignett was my first dive into her work, and I can confidently say that it won’t be the last. From the first page, I was hooked by the dry wit, fast pacing, and wonderfully chaotic energy of the story. This is urban fantasy with teeth, claws, and… feathers?
Daphne, the main character, is delightfully quirky and just the right amount of unhinged. She’s smart, sarcastic, and slightly psychotic in the most entertaining way. Her voice carries the story with humor and edge, making every scene feel fresh and unpredictable.
This book hits the sweet spot between action-packed and laugh-out-loud funny. The plot is fast-paced, full of unexpected turns, and nearly impossible to put down. The world-building is rich without ever feeling overwhelming, and the banter between characters is top-tier.

This is silly and ludicrous in the BEST way!! The FMC’s inner dialogue is laugh out loud funny, the goose’s involvement is icing on the cake and I can just tell the whole world doesn’t know what hit them with Daphne 😍 I loved this series and I had to force myself to put it down to read my book club books this month 😆

A fun start to a paranormal romance (at least I assume romance is coming) series with a wide range of supernatural species. Although the series is apparently a continuation of an earlier series set in the same world and possibly partly with the same main character, I got into it very well and the main character Daphne has an interesting history and a fun goose friend.

the heroine is crazy and I love it

Not gonna lie, I judged the heck out of this book by the cover but the synopsis sounded pretty good. A little cheesy with the emphasis on how crazy cool she is but I liked the thought of reading a “small-town girl in a big city” story.

It was so much more.

She really is all these things and more, for reasons that *spoilers*. But I liked the pace. A little wordy at times, very informative-dumpsite-like in areas that had the goldfish of my mind swimming in circles. I felt like I’d missed a series with the way she talked bout her family and friends but I also thought it was cool.

I’m very interested.

Sooo great!

Underestimated but well-connected, badass FMCs are my jam. I really loved this story.

I also loved that the relationship between Daphne and Romeo developed while they were solving a case together. The author did an awesome job of building that connection between them that made me giddy and excited to see how it will go.

And that bit at the end - ooooh I'm excited to find out how Daphne will take care of that as well.

Exciting read!

Daphne is grown up and out on her own. This book is full of new characters and a few old friends.

This is going to be a great series. I can’t wait for the next book.
I was confused when the book started. I felt as if I missed a book somewhere. But after checking I kept reading. I couldn’t put the book down.
Excellently written with all the feels.

Woohoo! A story about Daphne! She made her appearance in Chloe's books and what an appearance at that! A promiscuous, happy go lucky, crazy, trusting, scared and rather deadly Daphne caught me up as soon as I met her. And now, to follow her into Philly, no longer a kid, is a treat of note! Recently graduated as a social worker, she enthusiastically has only 2 things on her mind as she travels to her destination, helping kids and to surprise her boyfriend, Troy, with her arrival. Sounds like smooth sailing, right? Pffttt! She's barely set foot on Philly's ground when she's dealt an unfortunate hand, one, in her naivety, she couldn't anticipate. My poor sweet Daphne! Yes, Daphne evoked mama bear protectiveness deep within me from the very first time I met her, and now, mama bear was ready to go on the rampage! But Daphne is tough, Daphne is strong, Daphne is.... Daphne. A uniquely different kind of awesome. Heck, after all she'd been through, that girl has SKILLS!

Call me crazy but I was salivating at meeting Romeo, who's the enemy, who's a warlock, who, just from Daphne mentioning him, I knew I was going to enjoy! Now THAT was the understatement of the century! Enjoy???? Oh heck, I fell for him hook, line and sinker! Ms Hignett, oh you brilliant amazing author you! She pulled wool over my eyes, allowing me only to peek through when she poked a hole through the wool and slowly, drew it off my face that left me gasping at her craftsmanship, her prowess to navigate a fast paced, complexly, intricate plot is beyond fabulous! Every word has purpose, every sentence encapsulates me further, every paragraph thrills me! Not only does the story draw out all my emotions, it sets my heart pounding from the rush!

Then there are the characters she so meticulously crafted, breathing realism and depth into each one. Then there's the mystery, then there's the action, then there's.... I feel like an adrenaline junkie who needs a Lauretta Hignett book to give me my high. Which it does. Every time. Her storytelling is honestly unique, utterly compelling and humorous to boot. When you have Dwayne, the snarkiest, deadliest, most loveable goose, you know you'll be chuckling at his...ummm...antics. She even added the incredible Myf to the equation, who's tragically hilarious, tragic because of her agoraphobia and hides in Daphne's closet, hilarious because she has a mouth on her which is only rivaled by her talents as a cook. I'm so excited to see more of Myf. I'm so excited to see more of ALL the characters! I'm dying to see where Ms Hignett takes this story, because I'm guaranteed a story with tonnes of twists, a story that will make me laugh and make me cry, a story like a bike I've swung my leg over, getting a rush, swerving the obstacles with a grin on my face and one I know I'll get the ride of my life! I can't stress enough HOW brilliant this author is, I know that every book I've read, I'll be rereading over and over again.

Daphne has become a fascinating puzzle of a great character. I can’t wait to see what she brings to the future and The Hidden City next.

Rating: 4.5⭐️

Honestly, still thinking about the rating because the book and female character is so strange but I’m getting into it,as weirdly great as it is.

And she and the world is plenty different. Mostly it’s her, Daphne, she’s plenty different, with two voices in her head, enough trauma to fill several oceans, and deadly skill sets that are still being revealed. Along with her pasts that were spent in other realms, alien hellish ones as a lost child.

There’s the suspicious deadly brain Daphne, absolutely bloodthirsty. Then there’s heart Daphne, naive, obsessive, wanting to think better of others (even though she knows that they are evil). The conflict between these two is constantly ongoing and a real conversation.

Yes it takes time to get into this mess of a character and her situation but stick with it, she and the book is worth it.

Because the surprises will come nonstop as well.

Hignett does an excellent job with such a complicated character like Daphne, a wolf shifter who’s so severely traumatized by the years of abuse and sheer brutality of wandering through alien realms as a small child trying to escape and get home that her personality seems splintered. Or is it?

Each new encounter show the reader more of who she might be, whether she’s valiantly trying to make it through the day as a paranormal social worker, climbing over drugged vampires, and dealing with cranky co workers, or just barely staving off the darkness and nightmares of the past that constantly threatens her sanity. And it’s terrifying.

From her hair that used to be brown, but has become lavender upon her return to the human world. Then there are here friends who have followed her to Philadelphia.

A goose, Dwayne who’s a God of Anarchy, a sort of grandmother a renowned “Countess Ebadorathea Greenwood, world class villain sorceress maybe, for starters.

Plus she’s on a mission of revenge after she gets settled in her new job, helping the unwanted, the troubled supernatural children of The Hidden City of Philadelphia, where those who are unwanted or considered trash go.

I got more and more convinced of her and the raw tragedy of those around her. That’s there something so frightening about her that she’s become a walking daily affirmation, trying to keep herself positive, and often failing.

Daphne has become a fascinating puzzle of a great character. I can’t wait to see what she brings to the future and The Hidden City next.

Highly recommended.

You already know what this book is about, so I won’t summarize it here. What I will do is tell you how it reads from the point of view of someone who’s only somewhat familiar with the world this book is based in.

I was familiar with some of the characters going in, like Dwayne (if you know Dwayne, he’s kind of an unforgettable character), the MC Daphne, and the gothflower, Cindy. I also remember Chloe, who’s mentioned several times, and Prue. But I must not have gotten as far into both of those other series as I thought because I don’t remember the Great Suffocation event mentioned in this story. I almost went back to see about getting caught up, but I was too excited to finish this story to put it aside.

It actually worked out fine — Ms. Hignett did a great job of catching us up on the past events, and the characters from past storylines were either explained if they were just mentioned, or their actions in this story pretty much defined who they were. So, if this is your first foray into the Hidden Cities universe, you’ll be fine. Maybe a little surprised by Dwayne, but he’s a surprising character, no matter which book you find him in.

Also, he kind of takes over whichever scenes he’s in. I’m sure he doesn’t mean to, but it’s his nature. Fair warning.

Speaking of Dwayne, this is one of my favorite passages with him. He just GETS Daphne, and it’s super sweet, in a twisted way (also, he communicates in her mind, so the second sentence below is him talking in Daphne’s head):
***
He gave me a look. We can always burn the whole city to the ground if we need to. My heart swelled, and tears welled up in my eyes. “Thanks, Dwayne. I knew you would understand.”
***
You know what, though, Daphne is a strong enough character that she isn’t overshadowed by Dwayne. Just maybe upstaged a few times. I actually adored her in this book and am looking forward to the next one. Her unique blend of innocent optimism and old-soul weariness is one I can relate to. She wants to help people, but she knows some are monsters. She tries not to prejudge people, but when she catches herself doing it, she realizes and does better. She’s just the kind of complicated character that makes me happy to read about.

OK, and one last mention: Romeo. I mean, seriously. How can a guy named Romeo NOT be the love interest?! But not gonna lie — for much of the story, it could go either way. And even at the end, you might still wonder if Daphne’s going to k!ll him or fall in love with him. So maybe don’t read this if you dislike ambiguity.

But if you like laughing out loud, then wanting to cry, then being so frustrated that you email the author to give her a piece of your mind, this is definitely the story for you.

So, I picked up this book after Goodread's algorithm recommendation because I wanted to know why there was a goose on the book cover.
Now I know, and this is even better than I imagined. I love Dwayne.
This is the first tome of an urban fantasy series of the post-apocalyptic, adult but fun kind. It sounds like something a well-versed reader has already heard of : supernatural creatures have become known to humans and society hierarchy has blown up as a result (a bit à la Kate Daniels), Daphne's backstory reminded me of The Witcher's Ciri, the love interest's name is Romeo (ffs) and he's a biker gang leader. We get to meet with fae creatures, vampires, shifters, witches and more.

But this book has personality.
I don't know how else to describe it. There is a singularity to this author's writing style, ideas etc. that make this book stand out in the most delicious way.
Daphne herself has a very unique personality, a blend of optimistic, naive and... unhinged ? which make both her inner monologue and interactions with the other adults extremely entertaining to read. Meeting her in chapter 1 is a bit peculiar — I almost DNFed the book, thinking she was very childish and naive — but if you experience this as well, please do read chapter 2 and then make a decision.
Other than that, the world is quite dark (a tad too dark to my reader tastes, tbh) but in a believable way, with mature characters and situations. I enjoyed the found family vibe that seems to be starting in this tome, I like how the author manages to freshen up otherwise classic archetypes of the genre, and the humor is right up my alley.

Apparently, Daphne comes from another series in which she featured as a secondary character, and a few of the people we get to meet seem to be cameos from there as well, but as a first time reader, I didn't feel lost at all coming to this series without reading the previous one. I supposed I may have spoiled myself some elements of that series' ending, but I didn't feel like the backstory was so detailed that I wouldn't enjoy reading it anyway.

All in all, a little gem in a sea of urban fantasy adventures of various levels of quality, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

NoComing hot off the heels after reading Prue's story in the Blood And Magic series, I couldn't wait to get started on this one and trust me when I say I was hooked, I literally couldn't put it down. Yes I read it in one sitting in 8.5 hours in fact, a new record for me 🤣

I knew I was gonna love this from the start as this one features Daphne who I adored from Chloe's series. The little furball of fangs and protégé of Dwayne is all grown up, due to a very unique childhood. Arriving in Philadelphia after graduating as a social worker Daphne wants nothing more than to help the supernatural kids of the city after the magical apocalypse, and to take out the warlock who murdered her aunt.

Hells yes Daphne is fantastic, her quirky dual psychy is totally awesome. There's Heart Daphne, who is sweet, kind, naive and at times slightly manic and wants to give everyone their one fair chance. Then there's Brain Daphne, who will rip out your throat if you squandor that one chance, no hesitation. My kind of girl. Oh and she's insanely skilled with those knives of hers. I love her already.

I have to say I have a thing for the deliciously dark warlock Romeo (damn it another book boyfriend) who was nothing like he's perceived to be, yes that boy has secrets and they are a doozy. And the snarky banter between him and Daphne is electric, you can almost hear the crackle. I love how he literally doesn't know what to make of her.. I'm swooning already.

Dwayne my magnificent murder goose is as funny as always, I lost count how many times I was insanely laughing at his antics throughout the story. I do miss his bone sculptures but he has a new entertaining game to play no spoilers.

Oh and there's a couple of people that I've ear marked for an imaginary punching in my head already. Hopefully Dwayne will get there first....

Yes Lauretta has ensnared me once again with this awesomely funny new series which has left me wanting more. I seriously can't wait until the next book, November never seemed so far off. Totally recommend 😄

Another absolutely amazing book from Lauretta! This book follows Daphne (who we met in the Waif in the Wilds series) as she moves out on her own. Daphne is now an adult, even though it has only been a few years since we last met her. (No spoilers, you'll just have to read it to know how that is possible.) She has moved out to Philadelphia to begin her new life. She has a job already lined up as an Other CPS agent and is ready to surprise her long-distance love Troy when she arrives. But from the get-go, things go awry for poor Daphne. Then she meets Bonnie, a human girl who can "see". Daphne is supposed to help her, but Bonnie manages to get away. While searching for Bonnie, she is lead exactly where she does not want to be - near Romeo Zarayan, her nemesis.
Daphne is such a wonderful character. She likes to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and their once chance. She is seen as naive, innocent and even unstable (maybe not too far off on that last part), but she is definitely anything but naive and innocent! Having been through what she did in her early childhood and then even more as she grew older (again - no spoilers!), she is definitely prepared to take care of herself. And she is determined to make it all by herself in her new home.
And Dwayne! What else can I say about Dwayne that I haven't in my previous reviews?! I absolutely love Dwayne and want my own murder goose! Er, I mean emotional support animal. He is definitely Alpha material! And of course Daphne starts to pick up "strays" along the way as well. I think Myf her new "roommate" is hilarious and reminds me of a certain gothflower. I can't wait to find out if we ever get to see Myf or find out what she is!
And then there is the mystery that is Romeo! Putting off all the bad boy vibes, he may just be more than he seems. The more Daphne learns about him, the more she wants to try to figure him out. And he has many secrets to be revealed! After the way that book ended, I am now anxiously awaiting the next book!

I’ll be honest — my expectations weren’t high for this one. It looked and sounded like a fast-paced, predictable story with overpowered characters, a messy plot, and some stereotypical dynamics. And… it was exactly that.

But weirdly enough? I kind of liked it.

The main character, Daphne, is an overly optimistic werewolf (well, werewolf-ish) who moves to the city to start her career as a child protection case worker. She also moves to surprise her boyfriend and, naively, assumes she’ll be living with him. That plan goes downhill fast — and she ends up living in a sketchy apartment building instead.

Her ex-boyfriend may be trash, but he has a brother (I think they’re brothers), Romeo Zarayan, who leads a biker gang that people are both terrified of and weirdly obsessed with. Romeo also happens to be the guy who killed one of Daphne’s best friends… so naturally, she wants him dead. But then one of Daphne’s young clients goes missing — and she’s forced to team up with Romeo to find them.

Yes, the plot is chaotic and the twists are wildly predictable. But what saved the book for me were the side characters — they were vibrant, strange, and genuinely entertaining.

Take Dwayne, for example: Daphne’s sidekick/alpha/best friend/feral emotional support goose. His solution to most problems is simple: kill everyone. Yet somehow, he’s also an excellent comforter to the vulnerable kids Daphne works with. I loved every moment he was on the page.

Then there’s Daphne’s roommate, who I absolutely adored. I hope she gets a bigger role in future books — she deserves it. And I’m especially intrigued by the pigeon soul snatcher. He’s introduced as a villain, but I don’t think he’s entirely evil, and I’m hoping we’ll learn more about him later in the series.

So yes — this book was predictable, a bit unoriginal, and often completely unhinged… but it was also witty, weird, and unexpectedly fun.

I’ll definitely be continuing the series.

Well this was a doozy. Our lovable little wolf pup is back...and she's grown!! Daphne is here to stay and she's now twenty-two, despite only 4 years passing. I actually had to message Lauretta to make sure I hadn't missed anything. Luckily, just a few more pages in and it made more sense.
There is a LOT to unpack in this book, especially with the time jump, but it's so worth it and the story flows smoothly. Daphne is now a college graduate and wants to be a Social Worker and help Others in the system who aren't quite normal humans. She also plans to move in with her boyfriend and smash the barriers between species. Of course, this doesn't go the way she intends.
First off, the boyfriend....he's many bad words all rolled into one smelly package of yuck. No spoilers though, gotta read it.
The Job! Oh soooooo many thoughts on this and it shows some office politics very nicely. Daphne has a meeting with her first child in need and it's a mystery. This is the main plot and it doesn't stop moving. She also meets the pack leader/alpha who is a giant tool, and I mean a BIG TOOL. I kinda wanna smack him on principle.
Of Course Dwayne comes in not too far into the story and he's still Chaos Incarnate. He helps Daphne out and they get a roommate and furniture, kinda sorta.
This is the beginning of her story and Daphne is all I'd hoped so would become as she grew up. She's still innocent in some ways, and she gives people ONE chance to be good to her. After that though? She is unequivocally, unapologetically, herself and will slash you with a smile on her face because she gave you the chance and now gives zero effs.
Throw in the new High Priest called the Warlock, add in a missing vamp leader and you've got a story that keeps going.
Lauretta starts this off with a bang and just keeps knocking it out of the park.

I have totally fallen in love with the universe that Lauretta Hignett has created. With each series released, I've fallen harder. So imagine my excitement with this first book of Daphne's series.

We first met Daphne in Chloe's series as a young emotional and physically abused child who was rescued by Chloe. In this new series, we see Daphne is now grown, she is an optimistic yet fierce young woman looking to make a career helping children in Philly whilst in the employment of social services. However this story has plenty of twists and turns, a different world view, we have new characters and a of course a few old favourites...aka a certain murder goose! DWAYNE!! the new include a certain leather wearing, motorbike riding warlock with whom the dialog interactions with Daphne just gave me life (and all the chuckles).

Without giving too much away, Daphne embarks on her first job within the social services, a young girl needs her help, even more so whens she goes missing. Is she just a runaway?, or is there something more sinister afoot? Our heroine will encounter her fair share of trouble, in which her honesty doesn't always improve her situation... but it's hella amusing!

You'll laugh, you'll gasp, your emotions will be bashed about within the the first chapter lol, but relax, your gal Lauretta has got you.

I highly recommend reading this first book in this new series created by Lauretta Hignett, and if you didn't already know I'm desperately awaiting book no.2 ...and you will be too!!!

So get downloading/ordering, whar are you waiting for? You won't regret it!!!

I must have thought, "Wait, WHAT?!?" about a dozen times in the first few chapters! If you haven't read the previous series in this world - Imogen Gray, Foils and Fury, Blood and Magic, and The Waif in the Wilds (Daphne is a little girl in this one) - you CAN pick up this book without knowing all the stuff that happened, but if you can, I strongly recommend you read them. Not just so you can have your own "Wait, WHAT?!?" moments, but so you can read a lot of freaking awesome books.

But to get back to this one and grown-up Daphne. After some really AWFUL years in other realms, she finally got back home and decided she wanted to help kids - to protect them as she was not protected herself - and she moves to a big city with a huge supernatural presence and a Hidden City (where mundanes can't go).

What follows is quite a wild ride. This author writes unhinged characters really well - she writes EVERYTHING really well, but I'm always impressed and drawn to the unhinged ones (I wonder what that says about me!). Daphne gets into shenanigans left, right, and center, and I was on the edge of my seat with every chapter. There's humor along with the lots of action. And there's Dwayne. Ah, Dwayne... he's humor and action and mystery all rolled up into one fluffy-feathered-yet-dangerously-sharp goose.

While there's an ending to the mystery in this book, the door has been left wide open for so much more, and I'm already clamoring for the next installment!

I loved this book (and the following ones).
The protagonist seems "real". That is, she doubts herself, but has an inner strength. Her magic doesn't seem much, but the way she uses it is great. The character development is believable. Daphne goes from a win over a monster to egg on her face in a personal relationship, to making a friend, to making an enemy. Love the ups and downs.
I can feel her anxiety with her new job, and will people like me, and, etc. But, she keeps going. Kudos!
I like the writing style; there's more showing than telling, and what telling there is comes in small doses. So, no, you don't know what "The Suffocation" is for about 5 chapters after it's mentioned that it's a big deal. And that's okay. That's how we learn IRL as well. It comes up naturally in a thought or a conversation. It isn't forced on us.
The action is good, right from the start. Well, chapter 2 I believe. The first chapter is (in spite of what I said above) kind of an intro to the OP and why she's there on the bus. But, she is talking to another passenger, so it feels pretty natural. Then the next thing you know there's a fight. I like it.
We learn a bit about the other characters, slowly, but it's pretty Daphne-focused. We get some, but I do wish there could be more character development for those who are closest to Daphne.
I still give it 5/5 stars because I found myself reading this series rather than watching a movie. That's always a good sign!

Wow

Ok so let me start off by saying I never girl real reviews always very generic, but I'm writing one for real this time, I've never even done that for long standing favorites of mine, I don't even know the name of the author and I say that to say that thus is by far one of the best books I have ever read, and once I'm done writing thus I am putting the name very safely somewhere in my phone
Daphne is an amazing character, I absolutely love her personality and its one I've never seen before/ read before, and the skills she has are unheard of , I love it , and Dwayne, how can you not love that character, I'm so excited to jump back to reading because I genuinely have no clue what's gonna go down , when's the last time you've read a book and can actually say that ? SO RARE
I am so excited to read this book and every single other one by this author, wow how many times in a lifetime has that happened?
Oh I'm back, I was literally reading scenes and cracking up because of Daphne's inner dialoge, cracking UP!!!
I'm so excited, now I wanna get to the end just because this book is so good i need to write a review, everyone needs to know, if you're reading this now , stop and download the book, first book on kindle where I will gladly pay for any of the next books, in this series, I will gladly pay, stop, go get the book.....and in what story that you've ever read, a bird with glock ....

The Wolf vs The Vampire

I’m fairly new to Lauretta Hignett’s writing and let’s just say she’s very quickly become one of my favourites. This book had me invested from the get go. Usually it will take me several chapters before I’m sold on a book but the MFC Daphne pulled me in from the very beginning . I mean who doesn’t love a demented small town hick. I’ve fallen hard for our sweet , kind, fair but extremely bad ass heroine.
The series begins with Daphne who has moved from small hidden city town Castlemaine to bigger city Philly to start a job as a newly graduated social worker at a child protection services office and to reunite with her boyfriend Troy . Her aim is to help as many kids as she can after the damage the supernatural apocalypse has caused . She is joined by her emotional support goose who just happens to be a little predisposed to murder and mayhem. There is also a sexy, intriguing Warlock and his coven of misfits, an overly curious pigeon , a goth pixie and so many more entertaining characters.
Lauretta has an amazing talent for storytelling and really knows how to find the sweet spot with characters who are unnervingly multidimensional. They are funny, flawed , caring , a little bit psychotic but somehow relatable all at the same time.
The next instalment in the Hidden City Supernatural Sleuth series can’t come soon enough for this reader.

I loved this book & can't wait for the next one! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Wolf Vs The Vampire is the first story in Daphne's series set in a wider world. We first meet her with Chloe in The Waif in the Wilds, and it explains some of her backstory, but isn't necessary to read first.

🐺 Daphe is a bit unhinged in the best of ways. I love her outlook on life - optimism first, then murder if they try to eat you. Plus, she's my kinda girl slinging truths like this:

"If I had an Achilles heel, it was bread."

🪿 Dwayne is the best murder goose I've ever met and I'm thrilled he's here with Daphne. As usual, he's a chaotic riot.

There's a few cameos of unexpected characters from other series, and they're perfect. Daphne also seems to collect friends, and I like our new ones so far.

🤣 Humor
This book is hilarious! Daphne herself is quite funny, usually unintentionally, and there's lots of humor and charm.

"Come on, brain! Think! You have to do something! Yeah, sorry. You’re screwed. Imma head on out. Goddamn it, brain!"

💘 Romance
We're on a slow burn here - or maybe fast track to an explosion later? Hard to tell right now, but I like how it's developing. It seems realistic and fun.

🕰️ Readability
Super easy and fun read ✔️
Hard to put down ✔️
Read in one day ✔️

When I started this book I didnt know what to expect as these type of books can be very hit or miss for me and as of late, definitely more miss than hit...
Anyways, so reading the opening act I remember spending the whole time she was talking to Sheila, wondering wether she was really this naive or merely pretending. Turns out it was both and I was intrigued with the interesting dichotomy it presented to say the least...

so I stuck with it and pretty soon found myself devouring the pages...
the world was obviously well established and a lot of the lore/history she shares, I can only assume refer to things happening in the previous series set in this world (havent read any of them yet and the blurbs havent really convinced me to try either).
And while there are a lot of familiar elements involved (KD, Nava and Rohan (Unlikeable Demon Hunter), Ivy Wilde from Lazy Girl's Guide To Magic and even a little bit of Oliver Queen in Arrow with his flashbacks to past Oliver on the island.. to name but a few) all in all it was still unique enough to remain interesting.

In the end it lost a bit in rating points due to too much OTT swooning/ going all gaga for the bad boy hero (major pet peeve of mine) as well as the little hook at the very end. At least it wasnt a full on cliffy or we'd have been down to 2 stars and I'd have had to cxl the rest of the series on principle...
