This book was very eye opening and thought provoking. Shauna wrote this book in such a way that is so easy to read and apply to your daily life. It's full of compassion and wisdom and I definitely connected to this book. It gives you the tools to navigate through your trauma, by setting boundaries. This is something that really resonated with me. I have been getting better at it, but I love the way Shauna helps us to feel that it is ok to feel your feelings and gives you steps to do that. So many helpful and insightful aspects to this book. Highly recommend.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and Suzy approved book tours for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own!
I did a combination of print reading and audio listening for this self help book. I really enjoyed both.
This book covers a wide variety of subject matters, but all of it is for the end result to benefit you. The chapters don’t have to be read in order so that you can focus on what you need first.
Shauna does explain that she put the book in its order because that was her journey.
I think that this book was useful in that it held practical advice and prompts that are quite thought provoking.
The chapter that hit home for me right now was on “Feeling It All”. Emotions are so complex and I felt empowered after reading this chapter.
There is also a bonus workbook on Shauna’s website that I’ve just started working through.
The book is a guide throughout that inner guidance. Shauna also tells about her life as well through these essential building blocks. There are also tips for these building blocks. It's a good read.
Shauna Brittenham Reiter’s book “You Are the Boss of You: Cultivate the Mindset and Tools to Live Life on Your Terms” is an honest guide for emotional liberation and relief. Drawing on the author’s personal experiences with mental stress and unresolved childhood trauma, it aims to mend the massive holes in the mental health system that have left most individuals suffering with no long-term coping methods.
Brittenham asserts that the prevalence of mental health issues is rising yearly in the twenty-first century. She has witnessed the majority of people around her juggling poor relationships, prescription medicines, and even identities, all while battling with increased worry, despair, and insomnia. For the majority of them, the urge to feel deserving of love and free of deeply embedded trauma is at the center of the conversation. Drawing from her struggle with an abusive background that caused her to spiral into crippling paranoia while attempting to identify herself, she shares with readers her journey to regain herself while developing her ideal family, career, and inner self.
Using a variety of therapeutic approaches, she unpacks important mental wellness concepts, including the need for boundaries, their connection to self-blame, the difference between boundaries and control, and how to break free from entangled identities. She demonstrates how to empower yourself to self-soothe and embody the qualities of a parent that you may have missed while growing up. She also emphasizes the peril of suppressing your emotions and the need to allow yourself to feel them. Along with revealing some of the ingenious techniques people use to suppress their emotions, she provides practical advice to promote awareness and healing.
This book is essential for everyone who is in dire need of emotional support and is worn out by ingrained habits and beliefs that they cannot seem to break free from. It boasts The Five Steps to Creating Dynamic and Inspired Possibilities, the author’s groundbreaking signature approach, which promises a lasting foundation for healing and a long-term coping mechanism for mental health problems. Once plagued by anxiety, paranoia, hypervigilance, and unexplainable grief, the author openly recounts her life’s path, including the highs and lows that ultimately led her to achieve long-lasting emotional liberation. As you read it, you feel as though she is encouraging you to emerge from a dark place while holding your hand and telling you to be true to who you were intended to be.
“You Are the Boss of You: Cultivate the Mindset and Tools to Live Life on Your Terms” will put an end to your search for ways to redefine who you are. Each page contains invaluable information that has been meticulously and precisely prepared. Stunningly, it develops a plan for your life that is more fulfilling and motivating than you could have ever dreamed. It is a worthy read for anyone seeking to heal on all levels—emotionally, physically, cognitively, and spiritually.
You Are the Boss of You is an introspective guide for reclaiming personal power and healing. Shauna Brittenham Reiter combines her personal struggles with trauma and mental health with a toolkit of practical strategies. The book weaves her story of resilience with lessons on setting boundaries, healing trauma, self-soothing, and redefining self-worth. Each chapter explores a key aspect of personal growth, from softening perfectionism to honoring sleep, with actionable advice for creating a life aligned with your deepest desires.
One thing I appreciated about the book is its honest vulnerability. Reiter’s willingness to share her journey, like the forty-day fast that landed her in a psychiatric ward, is not only brave but creates a strong connection with the reader. The chapter on healing trauma resonated with me, where she unpacks how unresolved childhood experiences echo into adulthood. Her perspective on recognizing these patterns and gently confronting them is relatable and encouraging. The anecdotes make you feel like you're sitting with someone who has "been there" and genuinely wants to help.
I also found the writing style straightforward and powerful. The chapter on boundaries, for instance, dives into why we often say “yes” when we mean “no” and how that erodes our self-respect over time. Her examples of practicing saying "no," like declining a party invite without overexplaining, are simple but effective. It hit home for me because I tend to overcommit and then regret it. Her guidance felt like a friend reminding me to put myself first without guilt.
Chapter 9, "Advocating for Yourself," stood out to me as one of the most empowering sections of the book. It struck a perfect balance between relatable examples and actionable advice, encouraging readers to take control of their own narratives. What I liked most about this chapter was its focus on the emotional and psychological blocks that prevent people from standing up for themselves and the practical strategies Reiter offers to overcome these challenges.
You Are the Boss of You, by Shauna Brittenham Reiter, is an empowering read. It would resonate with anyone navigating trauma recovery, struggling with boundaries, or simply seeking a more fulfilling life. Reiter’s raw honesty, paired with practical tools, makes this a great book for readers ready to reclaim their agency and live authentically. If you’re ready to become “the boss of you,” this book is worth the read.

Before I go deeper into the book I would like to let the reader know that this is an extremely profound journey. One may read the book in any particular order and flow with it as some chapter will resonate more than others.

I enjoyed that this novel was written like you were talking with a friend. I am not a big self-help nonfiction reader but Shauna really wrote this as a guide to use and reference when needed. I like the examples she used for certain situations and how it was very relatable to a lot of people and every day life, such as handling bossy siblings and their expectations. I thought that this was an eye opening read and I did tab a lot of pages through out this book. I also liked that you could read which section called to you at that time and the summary's really were a nice wrap up to that chapter. I also really enjoyed that Shauna makes you think about things in a way you might not have and it's all in simple everyday language we can all understand. Thank you to the author for putting her story and thoughts out there and for the complementary novel and to Suzy Approved Book Tours for the invite. This is a book I might not have picked up and I am glad I was given the opportunity to read it. My daughter is now also reading through it and marking other lines that resonate with her. This review is of my own opinion and accord.

I love a book that inspires me to check in and refresh, like a reset button, remembering my priorities and what’s most important for my own well-being. You Are the Boss of You achieves this and more in a practical, approachable way.
I appreciated the reminders to prioritize sleep and actually take the time to soothe myself. Also, learning to self-advocate is always worth revisiting. The author mentions “emotional freedom” throughout, and I really love that refreshing concept. I loved this book and felt like a million bucks after I finished it. Now to capture THAT feeling in a bottle, maybe by revisiting this one on my shelf.
If you’re going to pick up a self-help or motivational non-fiction book, this is one, right here! Perhaps you didn’t even know you needed one, but I still recommend checking this out.

You Are the Boss of You is tool book for transformation to have on your bedside table.
Of the many personal growth books on the market, this one takes readers by the hand as author Shauna Brittenham Reiter walks them through how to overcome the most pressing challenges modern women face today, from self-esteem to sleep.
As practical as it is profound, the author’s roadmap comes from her own transformational journey from troubled teen to accomplished singer-songwriter and successful entrepreneur. Her words serve as guidance from a wise and loving mother— something most of us deeply need.
I’m all about Girl Power and this book screams Girl Boss!! The author does an amazing job walking through her life and how she built her building blocks to confidence and belief in herself. I love how she talked about her life experiences which included mental health and childhood trauma. She touches on Defining boundaries · Soothing yourself · Softening perfectionism · Redefining your self-concept · Honoring sleep · Healing trauma · Feeling it all · Creating your rhythm · Advocating for yourself · Building your future This book offers so much support and it’s like talking to a close friend.
I don’t have much use for the life and career advice of men. I don’t find it often translates, what with all the patriarchy and invisible labour, but I will stand in line for real advice from real women.
The author offers, amongst discussions of childhood trauma, mental heal, and mind/body/spirit connection, building blocks to a more balanced life.
I loved the personal anecdotes, the actionable steps, and the frank talk about the realities of existing (and thriving) in our specific skin.
YOU ARE THE BOSS OF YOU is a very practical self-help book that can probably help anyone that reads it. In a world that is full of reasons to the stressed, this book can provide some tools to be better equipped to deal with stressors. I highly appreciated that the author spoke from the heart and also detailed her own struggles and journey to an improved life.
Many thanks to Shauna Brittenham Reiter for my gifted copy.
This review will be shared to my Instagram account (@coffee.break.book.reviews) in the future.
If you’re usually allergic to self-help books, don’t run just yet—this one is different. It’s like a heart-to-heart with a wise, kind friend who’s been through some stuff and isn’t afraid to talk about it. The author keeps it real, sharing her ups and downs with warmth, honesty, and just enough vulnerability to make you feel seen.
She tackles ten core themes—think boundaries (especially tricky for empaths), self-soothing, and the radical idea that we’re allowed to feel everything. Yes, even the so-called “bad” emotions. Her bedtime rituals? Serious gems.
This book is a must-read for anyone looking to deepen their self-awareness and cultivate a more loving, empowered relationship with themselves. Each chapter reads like a cozy therapy session, offering practical tools and heartfelt insights to help readers navigate their inner world with compassion and confidence.
I loved how validating and nurturing the content felt, especially when it comes to healing our inner child. It left me feeling not only comforted but truly empowered, with a renewed sense of agency to take charge of my life and be the boss of my own journey.
I found the information on setting boundaries very enlightening. The book also validated the fact that empaths have a more challenging time creating boundaries. How the author learned to self soothe from soothing her children really resonated. But the biggest nugget is that we are allowed to feel all our feelings even if society deems some negatively! I found the author’s getting ready to sleep rituals especially helpful.
Empowering and uplifting. I’m all about books that promote a positive mindset, and this one really delivered. It covers everything from setting boundaries and softening perfectionism to improving sleep and learning to actually feel your emotions. It’s honest, relatable, and easy to follow; no magic tricks, just real, down-to-earth advice that makes sense.
If you’re looking for something that helps you reset and reconnect with yourself, this one’s definitely worth reading.
Listen, I’m generally not much for non-fiction, let alone self-help – me and my Alien Book Boyfriends are doing pretty well, thank you very much – but this book was excellent.
I really felt close (but, like, not in a weird way) to the author, as she discussed her life’s path – both good and bad – and learned a lot about myself along the way.
I so appreciated her vulnerability. Her sensitivity will allow me to make changes in my own journey.
