Good use of the trauma here with our lead, Elo. She was jumpy, haunted, paranoid, and truly exemplified what PTSD looked like. And Alan Shivers absolutely captured the tone and flow of a typical 80s slasher, which is always a nice touch. The story dragged a bit several times and probably could have been a lot shorter, without sacrificing the quality of the book. The POV shifts also had their moments where they were a bit hard to follow. However, even with some minor issues, it was still a unique and well-written story of the infamous masked killer subgenre.

This was a blast! This author has a knack for getting the readers invested in the lives of the characters and that just makes this high-energy and high-tension style they’ve got going on just so darn enjoyable. Truly honored to be able to work with this author. We start out with a deep dive into wtf right away in this story. Instant action and tension and so reminiscent of the good old 80s/90s horror like Friday the 13th, I know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legends - if you enjoyed either of those last two, definitely check out his slasher trilogy Europea Halls! Back to this story, to sum it up… NAMASTE, B*TCH! This is a high-tension, fast-paced and immersive tale of just how wrong mindfulness retreats can go. And characterization is a skill this author has down to a T, each character unique and perfectly described in ways that bring the whole book to life. Filled with chase scenes and twists that’ll leave you slack-jawed, this author is onto something and more people need to jump on his works!

The Namaste Slasher – More Like "Nah, I'm Staying to the Very End!"

The Namaste Slasher didn’t just creep into my nightmares—it kicked the door down and made itself at home (and I loved every bloody second of it)! From the first chapter, this book pulls you in, introducing a cast of characters you’ll instantly feel connected to. You’ll pick your favorites, and just when you think you’re safe—BAM! The slashing starts.

Not only did The Namaste Slasher shatter my expectations, but it kept me guessing with its relentless twists and pulse-pounding turns. Even as a die-hard slasher fan, I found myself gripping the edge of my seat, heart racing as the tension mounted.

This book doesn’t shy away from the gore—it revels in it! Alan Shivers has a way with words that’ll leave you squeamish in the best possible way. The gruesome sequences are so vivid, that you’ll feel like you’re watching it unfold right before your eyes. (Pro tip: Don’t get too attached to anyone—this is a slasher, after all, and not everyone makes it out alive. You’ve been warned!)

Shivers has created a chilling new killer that’ll be haunting my dreams for a long time, and I’m already hoping for more stories set in this twisted universe. If you're a fan of slasher horror, do yourself a favor and dive into this one—and once you’ve survived, check out Alan’s slasher trilogy. This is an up-and-coming horror author you won’t want to miss!

Five people come to a mindfulness retreat in Croatia, hoping to find themselves and let go of their pasts. Whilst there, they find out about a local legend, about a young boy who grew up in the mountains, killing animals and tourists. Obviously, they don't believe it. It's just a story, isn't it?

This was a fun, fast-paced slasher that had me flying through the pages desperate to get to the end. We have a masked killer, a local legend, LGBTQ+ rep, gory murder scenes, and an ending that leaves you wanting more.
If you're a fan of slashers, this one Us definitely for you.

Namaste B*****s! If you love slasher films, you'll probably love this. What a great setting for a slasher... a mindfulness retreat. Personally, that setting fills me with dread, and I could see why someone may get pushed to the brink and go on a rampage! But it's usually a sign of peace and tranquillity...

The pacing is fantastic. We are thrown straight into the first murder within a few pages, and it is totally unexpected. I could not put the book down and read it all in two settings, and that was only because it got too late to continue reading.

There is a great cast of characters, and the story switches from multiple pov. What I loved most is that nobody is safe, so don't get too attached to anyone. The plot is also a lot of fun, and it kept me guessing throughout.

The characters are from various European countries, and I loved the mix of personality, accents, and culture that came across. There is also plenty of LGBTQ+ representation, which is great to see in a horror read.

Overall, this was a fantastic read, perfect for this time of year. It was horrifying without taking itself too seriously, and I was absolutely here for it. I will have to check out some more books by this author!

With thanks to the author for providing a copy of the book. This is my honest review, which I'm leaving voluntarily.

I haven’t actually read a lot of slashers - the few I have read I haven’t loved. But this one! I almost forgot I was reading a horror book, I was so invested in getting to know the characters and their stories while at the retreat. Then the murders start, and no one is safe! There were definitely a couple shocking twists - don’t expect your typical predictable slasher story. Great characters, gruesome deaths, and a shocking ending - I loved this book!

I went to this book entirely blind, my only hints the images on the cover and, of course, the title. And, to be honest, the book shows great promise (amazing beginning, intriguing setting, and an incredible twist in the middle), the author is talented (mostly good pacing, creative use of slasher tropes, an interesting take on the influencer scene), and I'll certainly check out more of his work.

That said, this kind of slasher (sweet, groovy, camp) is probably not for me. I just couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to enjoy it. There are so many plotholes and simply unbelievable scenes (queer Bulgarian soldier who's been in Iraq breaks down and cries whenever something bad happens; he also chooses to have loud sex, instead of helping the girls scout the unknown place out? the influencer making a reel to ask her followers for info on the serial killer who's chasing her, instead of simply telling them to call the police or the embassy? it's giving "looney tunes," to employ the annoying idiom overused in the book), a plethora of forced and preplanned turns in the story just to make a point (almost always about LGBTQ representation - nothing wrong with that, of course, but the characters being more anxious to hit on the others' correct pronouns RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of a serial killer chasing you, well, that does take the cake!), and a very awkward ending explaining nothing. Plus, so many scenes in the second half that do nothing to drive the plot forward; destroying any tension painstakingly prepared in the first half. This needs some good beta reading!

If you're looking for a good slasher, avoid this; but if you're into camp fiction making specious use of the slasher trope to put across points about diversity, go for it!

In the mountains of Croatia five people from different walks of life attend a mindfulness retreat, all of them trying to let go of their past although for one the trip is also an investigation into a mystery played out on screen a year ago. The retreat is beautiful, calm and secure but someone lurks in the mountains, a legend of flesh who hungers for blood.

A masked killer stalking a group of young adults, local legend of an abandoned child who grew up to be a killer, gruesome kills and chase scenes and detailed back stories for each character that makes them feel real. Gore and terror and twists, oh my! The first twist in this story made me gasp, talk about subverting the narrative!

From the author of the incredible slasher trilogy Europea Halls (read it, it will be a film franchise one day!) here’s another urban legend made flesh, paying homage to the classic slashers of the 80’s/90’s it will grab you by the throat and choke you into submission. I guarantee it’s a wild ride and your chakras will need to be realigned at the end. Soaked in delicious dialogue that is full of humour, it will give you whiplash from the twists and there is enough gore to keep this horror queen very happy!

Really enjoyed this. The slasher subgenre of horror is plentiful so I was expecting this to be just another similar entry, but the location and circumstances of the story had me curious- a wellness retreat, where you are meant to be relaxing, but a masked killer is on the hunt. Bang goes the meditation session!

It was well written, with good descriptive details of the location and characters. The style of writing was good, although sometimes the POV change would throw me a bit (as it's told in first person and I got a bit lost before realising who I was meant to be reading as). Quite short chapters which means I could blast through a few and get really engrossed in the story. The killer is also quite unique, with a good backstory. Good, gory kill scenes too. I also really enjoyed the last chapter which was written in a Reddit style format, that was cool (no spoilers though, so you'll need to read to find out what I mean)

It’s giving awesome! lol
From the first chapter I knew I’d love this book.
Great writing, pacing, characters and can be devoured in one sitting. 😘
The slashing is on point and is so easy to visualise. I loved how gory it got. The images filling my mind were satisfying, sickening too, but so satisfying. I loved it. 🪓
The setting is epic. I mean, a mindfulness retreat? Perfect. 👌
And, damn! There are twists and shocks in store that I didn’t see coming. Literally left me speechless.

It’s a 4 because I have mixed feelings about the ending and I wanted a little more information about a couple of the characters.

I’m now intrigued as to how this will feature in his upcoming book, Killer Vocals. I’m excited. 🎤

I don't know how Alan keeps me hooked because I'm not really a horror reader but he keeps me reading his books. His books reminds me of the time when I was a teenager watching all the final destination movies and yet knowing I will get something new to be scared about.
The Namaste Slasher is an amazing book to start with when you're new to horror and gore with enough camp to keep you (and me) going to finish the book. When you finish the book you kind off want more slasher novels.

The journey you go on with our five main characters when they go to a wellness retreat in Croatia you keep cheering them on the whole way through the book. but will there mindfulness be an asset or barrier?

ARC from the author.

This was not going where I expected in the best way! The thing I enjoy most about Alan Shivers books is that I become aware of how oblivious I am to some other parts of the world and learning some of the intricacies of those areas is fascinating. This delved into Croatian history, the surrounding countries, as well as the intersections of folklore and urban legends.

By the time we reached the end, after a blood trail was slashed through the retreat, is some equal parts a relief and horrifying. You'll never see it coming.

A fun entry into the slasher genre that takes place outside the usual tropes and setting.

5 people attend a mindfulness retreat, a masked killer shows up & they do what they can do to escape.
If you're a fan of classic horror slashers like Halloween, Friday the 13th, etc. you should enjoy this story.

I love the writing style, it was fun, easy to read & fast paced. I loved the representation; with the European representation with the characters, & queer representation. I found the gore scenes was well written.
The POV changes were a little hard to follow, however I'll overlook it when it was a great story & I will 100% be reading more of his work

I may never trust any getaway ever again! You go to a mindfulness retreat for peace, calmness, and maybe even to find your inner self again; except you spend the entire time running and hiding for your life.

This is a slasher novel so expect the gore and the anxiety! The twists and turns were pretty great too! The characters were also so likable that it made this book even more awesomely devastating!

Alan Shivers has to be one of the best slasher novel writers!

NAMASTE BITCHES!!

This was my first Alan Shivers book although I have other titles on my tbr. After reading this, I am so much more eager to get to those. I had a lot of fun reading this. It has a great cast of characters, a cool setting, and overall, it's a unique take on the cult classic slasher. I would definitely recommend this to both lovers of old school slasher horror and thriller readers, too!

I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Though I loved the creativeness and the backstories of the characters as much as the pacing of this book, I do think that some of the characters just weren't a match for me. The setting of this book also wasn't really my thing.

A flesh tearing, blood splattered, gore encrusted horror novel straight from a spiritual nightmare!

The Namaste Slasher is a true genre defining book. The slasher sub genre of horror can sometimes be a little repetitive but this is not one of those occasions. Alan Shivers is a master of this sub genre and The Namaste Slasher is his best release to date!

Set in the beautiful mountainous Croatia, this spiritual retreat is not as calm and serene as you would expect. Alan really transports the reader into his settings and this book has the most captivating setting yet. The writing sells the scenery exceptionally and when I looked the real Velebit up, it was just how I imagined it would be when reading.

The story, whilst having all the trademarks of a slasher horror, stands out due to it’s spiritualism…something which seems to have exploded in recent times. The first 2 acts are true slasher gold and the third act dives head first into the mysticism associated with spiritual journeys…oh and it doesn’t release you from its grasp until it has sliced you open, gouged out your eyes and ripped your spine out through your neck. Honestly the third act was so intense and atmospheric, i read it one sitting. I literally could not put it down…I tried… but I had too many questions and worries and needed to go back and finish!

The Namaste Slasher is a gold standard in slasher horror and Alan themselves is a rapidly rising author on my go to list! Head to the Croatian mountains with him, relax a little, do some yoga, maybe meditate…but make sure you are ready to run…especially if you are a fan of your organs being inside your body!!

A thrilling mindfulness camp slasher.

Five lucky applicants are awarded a place at a wellness retreat deep in the heart of the Croatian mountains.

But their exclusive prize delivers far more than they bargained for, as they find themselves stalked by a killer who takes a far different approach to cleansing the soul.

A spiritual journey unlike anything they could have imagined, they are plunged into a fight for survival of mind, body, and spirit.

‘The Namaste Slasher’ is a slasher horror novel by Alan Shivers, taking the classic slasher concept to a Central European setting, the classic forest summer camp replaced with mindfulness retreat Zelena Nada nestled in the Velebit mountain range. But this destination of peace, tranquility and meditation is about to be shattered by a bloodbath. Entertaining and fast-paced, with a camp vibe and flashes of dark humour, Shivers has crafted a fun and gripping slasher, brimming with bursts of violence and gore, twisty plotting and a vivid setting; all the perfect ingredients for a slasher.

Featuring a cast of characters from across Europe and from different backgrounds, the experience is presented from multiple character perspectives, beginning with Elo, whom we meet while in remission from cancer, who was determined to get a place at this retreat after witnessing her mentor’s murder via video call three years earlier. She’s here to hunt for a killer after the murder was seemingly covered up. No one knows her true motivation, and she initially trusts no one around her, neither fellow participant or part of the hosting team. Each of them has a history of trauma and heartbreak, their own set of circumstances that has brought them here, a vulnerability that may be exploited – or that may have led them down the dark path to murder. An unexpected mid-story twist jolts the narrative, an unsettling reminder that no one is safe and no one can be trusted.

Taking much inspiration from the slashers of the 1980s, particularly ‘Friday the 13th’, with a modern spin akin to the recent ‘Scream’ and ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ movies, the novel manifests in a thriller that is at once retro and modern, possessing an almost self-awareness that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Nevertheless, it handles the darker themes deftly, giving each of the characters a backstory, delicately exploring their trauma and mental health issues. Themes of sex and violence prevalent in the slasher sub-genre are juxtaposed perfectly with the spiritual themes, while also providing LGBTQ representation in a genre often dominated by heterosexual couplings.

Another theme touched upon is that of social media, bringing into focus the veneer of trends – for some this is truly authentic, for others it is no more than superficial appropriation. Perfectly playing into the concepts of deceit, secrets, and identity, this fuses seamlessly with the aesthetic of tenets of eastern spirituality, which hide something far darker beneath the surface; splashes of folklore and local history shading the canvas as the unwitting characters are confronted by an urban legend that manifests into a relentless, masked killer. Desperate to escape with their lives, characters are killed off one by one, those remaining getting closer and closer to the mystery of the killer’s identity and the motivation behind the bloodbath as we hurtle into the bloody climax.

Brutal and heartfelt, ‘The Namaste Slasher’ is old-school slasher mayhem with the empathy dialled up. While a standalone slasher, the novel also links to Shivers’ succeeding series, ‘Killer Vocals’, which I shall be eagerly reading along with his trilogy ‘Europea Halls’.

Eloise, a cancer patient alone and in debt living in Paris, has been taking Zoom meditation classes in an attempt to unwind. During one lesson, she opens her eyes and sees her instructor brutally killed by a man in a Siddhartha mask. Three years later, with no justice for Vera, Eloise decides to visit the retreat where the murder occurred to get closure for herself—and justice for her friend.

Much like his Europa Halls trilogy of books, Alan Shivers has crafted a story strongly influenced by the classic slasher era but with modern updates—namely, an opportunity to enjoy characters and locations outside of the usual US/UK-centric view the genre can tend to have and strong queer representation. Don't mistake a more inclusive cast for a comfortable read, though. The author isn't afraid to twist the knife here, with some brutal kills and buckets of gore, as well as a promise that none of the protagonists are safe—no matter how much you may grow to love them.

The Namaste Slasher is told from a first-person perspective through the eyes of Eloise as she meets the staff and fellow guests of the expensive, intimate retreat. The group—ranging from ex-military to a social media influencer—all seem friendly enough, but it soon becomes clear that everyone there has some darkness and pain in their past, and Elo has to decide which of them she can trust. Once the titular killer, a hulking brute with a masked visage, begins wreaking havoc, the group realises they'll need to work together to take down the unnaturally—maybe supernaturally?—strong foe.

Short chapters, plenty of twists and turns, and an engaging writing style that drives constant forward motion in the narrative make this a quick and exciting read. I finished it in a few sittings and felt like I had to use any free moments I had to read a few more chapters. The ending went in directions that I didn't expect, and although interesting and unlike any other I've read recently, I found it ended a little abruptly and perhaps a little more ambiguously than I expected. This is a minor quibble, though, and one that wouldn't stop me wholeheartedly recommending this to any fans of the genre.

I finally found that one horror book that managed to pull me in and keep me in it's grip until the very last page.

This one takes place in Croatia which makes for a refreshing change of pace- I live right next to Croatia but I learned a lot about Slavic gods and Croatia in general -it also prompted me to do more research which I always love.

I loved this book - it's about 5 people from different walks of life with different stories going to a special retreat in Croatia. They are supposed to spend a few days mediating and doing different things to work through their trauma - but a masked killer is there to pick them off one by one - can any of them escape and make it out alive?

I did love the story of the killer and how he came to be a killer - I also loved the stories we got from the five people that are the victims - or most of their stories at least. I also love that this book doesn't shy away from violence- a lot of slasher and horror books tell you that someone died but they don't really tell you how - this one goes into pretty gory details. I loved being with the characters and not knowing who will live or who will die - and how they will die because none of the deaths are the same as the previous ones.

I didn't really care for the ending and I wasn't a huge fan of POV switches- I mean some were fairly obvious - when you were with a character and they got killed their POV was obviously done and you didn't get it again - but it was a little bit annoying when the POV suddenly shifted between two chracters that were still alive and there because you would be with one and it would suddenly shift to the other and it could be pretty jarring.

The story was still great though and I have a feeling that this one will stay with me for a while. And I loved that bonus chapter too.

Namaste!

While on a ZOOM meditation call, a woman is seen on camera being decapitated. Thus begins this cheeky slasher (with a hint of humor) about a serial killer in a Buddha mask who violently murders anyone who enters the area. Sound familiar? Well, his name is Ivan Horvat (not Jason Voorhees), and his method of murder harkens back to the 80s slasher style, with body parts flying off left and right. The masked killer also appears to be indestructible, as no amount of counter stabbing seems to phase him. Oh, and did I mention the place is somewhat secluded? Again, the perfect aura for an 80s style slasher. As far as the characters go, I couldn’t really get too connected to any of them, as there were so many running around and they all seemed similar. One thing I’m not big on is killing off a first person narrator. I know it’s not against any of the unspoken rules (I’ve seen big time trad authors do it), but it’s just not my thing. And although I have never been in the situation before, I doubt I’d be worried about flirting and hookups when a slasher is on the loose and just killed a bunch of people right in front of me. Not to give anything away, but we all remember Rule #1 to surviving a horror flick.
Anyway, the book is good for fans of the old school slasher genre, as it meshes so many of the tropes together and doesn’t hold back with the kill scenes. And of course, the door is left open for a sequel.

Another slasher by Alan Shivers that doesn’t fail to deliver! I really enjoyed this new stand alone (or is it?) about a group of strangers who meet at a meditation retreat in the middle of the mountains. The setting was really nice, seriously, I wish I was there, and I enjoyed this new cast of characters. My favorite was probably Aagje because she was the social media influencer and I loved her “namaste, bitch!” lines! The scenes were just gory enough, especially the first death with one of our five group members, and the pacing was nice and fast! The ending was definitely shocking but left me wanting a bit more. And that cliff hanger! Does that mean we aren’t quite done with this villain?!

What an excellent introduction to Alan Shivers' work! I absolutely flew through this book, if I didn't have to work for a living (goals), I would have finished this in one sitting. After an being absolutely hooked during the first chapter, we take a small breather to set the scene of our story. And what a setting! Hidden in the remote Croatian mountains is a mindfulness retreat that sounds like a natural paradise. Beautiful scenery, tranquility, nature, and a big dude that wants to kill every-damn-body!!

The characters were an amazing blend of humans from different cultural backgrounds, sexual orientations, and races. In the words of one of the MCs, Aagje, "it's giving diversity." It truly made my heart soar to read a book with so much marginalized representation, without their differences being the only distinct thing about them. They were complex, fully formed people. And Alan made you care deeply for each one, then broke your heart time and again once the slashing began.

Once the action began, it did not let up. There were no breaks or opportunities to come up for air. The characters didn't get breaks, why should the reader? I really loved that about this book.

Definitely recommend for anyone who loves a good summer/ camp slasher!

The Namaste Slasher was a really fun read! It helped to distract me from some really heavy stuff going on right now and gave me some new things to think about in the slasher genre!

The thing that Shivers did that I liked the most was the different perspectives throughout the book. There's a certain safety in reading a character's point of view because you know that they can't be killed. Shivers takes that safety and tosses it in the woodchipper! No one is safe from the Namaste Slasher...

I've never read a book that kind of turns the trope on its head a little, and reading The Namaste Slasher was such a fun, unique experience. I grieved, laughed, stared in horror, scowled, all within the scope of around 230 pages!

However, the appearance of the slasher felt extremely random. Maybe that was intentional, but it threw me off a little, and I wasn't able to take the book as seriously as I could have. As the book progressed, events seemed to happen at very convenient times that just so happened to move the plot along without much lead up.

I'm really interested in seeing where this series goes, and I'm so excited to read Killer Vocals (and maybe find out what happened to certain someones???)

Time for some slashing! 🔪🩸

The namaste slasher is spiritual slasher novel by @alanshiversauthor and will be published on the 1st of October 2024. The story has all the vibes of a 80’s slasher movie, but with way more creative massacres in it and a unique setting in a mindfulness retreat. It starts as a slowburn with extensive character building which makes the characters super likable, in particular Aagje was my favourite. 🥰 I was praying throughout the book for some characters to survive because they were so kind, but it’s not like we’re reading a love story here ofcourse.. 🫣

Halfway through the book it becomes a fast-paced hell of a ride without brakes and the only thing you want to do is help them to kill this terrible monster behind the mask. I really liked the spiritual theme in this story since I love meditating, healing stones and retreats myself. 🧘🏻‍♀️🤩 If you love everything about mindfulness, but brutal killings and gore too this is your book!

Well written Alan, I definitely will pick up the Europea halls trilogy too and hope you write many more slashers! Many thanks for the review copy. 🙏🏻🫶🏼
