Secret, Book, & Scone Society #7

The Little Lost Library

Rate this book
In the latest in the mystery series hailed as “a love letter to reading” (Entertainment Weekly) from New York Times bestselling author Ellery Adams, Nora Pennington helps her bookstore customers find healing through the perfect book—while solving the town’s real-life murders with the help of her Secret, Book, and Scone Society members. Just a touch of magical realism and strong, female-driven stories are winning this series raves from readers and fans of Kate Carlisle and Lorna Barrett. When an elderly Miracle Springs resident, Lucille Wynter, arranges for Nora to deliver an order of books to her creepy, crumbling Southern Gothic mansion on the outskirts of town, Nora doesn’t expect to be invited in. An agoraphobic, Lucille doesn’t leave Wynter House. Nor does she invite anyone inside. But when Lucille doesn’t come to the door to collect her books, Nora begins to worry. Forcing her way into Lucille’s dilapidated home, Nora is shocked to find rooms packed to the ceiling with decaying books and a lifeless Lucille at the foot of her stairs. After reading a note left behind by Lucille, Nora wonders if her death was an accident. Did Lucille fall or was she pushed by someone seeking a valuable item hidden within Wynter House? Lucille’s children are clearly confident the house contains something of value, because they hire Nora to sift through the piles of books. As she digs, Nora can’t shake the feeling that hoarding didn’t cause Lucille’s fall. Soon, Nora’s obsession with Lucille’s collection is cause for concern amongst her friends in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society—she’s even neglecting her bookshop! Then, Nora does find something valuable deep inside Wynter House—a revelation about Lucille’s terrible past . . . and a secret worth a small fortune. But there’s someone who’d do anything to keep the truth buried amid the moldering tomes. The odds against them are stacked as high as the books, but it’s up to Nora and her friends to track down a murderer with a literary lean before Wynter House’s lost library claims another victim . . .

An enjoyable book with a not-so-surprising whodunnit. Perhaps the most intriguing part was learning the symbolism behind each found mini book.

I’ve never read any of the other books in the series, so I think you’d be find to just jump in like I did.

I always look forward to the books in this series, and as usual, this is a tough book to put down. This series is a little heavier than a lot of cozies, it deal with serious and often painful things, but then always gets real about what's important and meaningful. Nora had been dropping off books to a recluse that lives in a dilapidated mansion for a couple of years. Lucille Wynter never lets her into the house, but she has a small entryway where she puts two chairs. They usually share a cup of tea and talk about books. When Lucille doesn't answer the door, Nora calls her, when she whispers for help, Nora calls for help then breaks down the door, but she's too late, she finds her client dead at the bottom of a staircase, in a house filled with multiple horrors and great sadness. Lucille had left a letter and small book with clues about a little lost library for Nora. When the police determined Lucille was murdered, Nora needs to find the clues and determine if the little lost library had anything to do with her death. This is a multi layered mystery with fascinating answers in the end. As usual, the author's love of books is evident everywhere throughout this book, and we also get a reminder about what's really important. Many thanks to #Netgally, #Kensingtonbooks, and the author for a chance to read. #TheLittleLostLibrary #TheSecretBookandSconeSociety #ElleryAdams #bookreview #bookideas #retiredreader

Nora Pennington owns Miracle Books in Miracle Springs, N.C. She and three friends, Hester, June, and Estelle, formed the Secret, Book & Scone Society book club and added Nora’s part time help, Sheldon Vega to their close knit group. Nora dates the Sheriff—Grant McCabe.

Nora’s odd acquaintance with an extremely reclusive customer who lives in a gothic mansion, Wynter House, leads her to a gruesome discovery; a house full of books; and a hoarding situation that’s almost unreal. The deceased widow, Lucille, has heirs who seem to just want their inheritance and to be done with the mansion, and the past! However, Lucille has left Nora a book—The Lost Library—a children’s story—which contains clever clues to where Nora hopes the rumored “Little Lost Library” will be found if it truly exists. This is such a nifty part of the plot as Nora, and friends, reason out the riddles and the identity of Lucille’s killer!

The mesmerizing plot is action packed, and Nora’s life is chillingly threatened. A classic Nancy Drew discovery leads to the final answer, and an arrest is made without ado; followed by a wonderful ending. I highly recommend this seventh installment to cozy readers. The entire series is fantastic and I’ve enjoyed each story and suggest the books be read in order of publication. Note: This Story contains some bad language.

I honestly read and reviewed an unedited arc provided by NetGalley and Kensington Publishing. All opinions are my own. Thank you.

What a delight to be back in Miracle Springs for another adventure. The town and Nora’s bookstore are places I’d love to wander around. This time the story revolves around an elderly recluse and her once-magnificent home. When Nora find Lucille Wynter dead in her home, Nora isn’t sure if it was an accident or murder. The house was overflowing with books and lots of other things. It turns out that Lucille had left a package with a note in the kitchen for Nora and inside Nora found a miniature book filled with riddles to follow a scavenger hunt of sorts, in the old house. And thus begins the search to find the clues and the answers to the mystery of Lucille Wynter’s life.

Each chapter starts with an appropriate quote from a famous writer, such as Maya Angelou, Neil Gaiman and Charles Dickens.

While this is part of a series, you could read this as a standalone as the author does a good job of filling in just enough background info for new readers. The author has also helpfully listed the main characters in the front of the book. I love all the side characters and always look forward to new books in this series. There’s also a lovely list of books at the back, a “bibliotherapy and book list” that relates to the story. There are books about toxic women, and a list of female thriller writers, spooky classics, romances with autumn vibes and a list of books mentioned in the text of our story.

Thank you to Kensington and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.

Comfort Read

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Ellery could write a refrigerator manual and I would read it. Her books are my auto buy books, go to when I need comfort, and first books I recommend when someone needs a book to read.

The last four and a half year have been the hardest of my life with losing both parents. Ellery’s character Nora has been a comfort to me. I can pick up a book in this series and be whisked away to Miracle Books where a book Nora mentions always finds a way to my heart. The Little Lost Library was no exception.

Nora was put to test in so many aspects of her life and things could have derailed the life she has made but it didn’t. You have to read the book to understand. The best part is those who truly love you either a friend or romantic love will give you grace and still be there for you at the end.

This book seven of the series and you can read as a standalone. I prefer in order but don’t let that stop you from getting to know Nora and Miracle Springs.

"The Little Lost Library (Secret, Book, & Scone Society #7) by Ellery Adams is sort of the worst case scenario for a hoarding house. Nora is bringing books to a long time customer. When the woman doesn't follow her usual pattern of behavior Nora takes steps to try to help. Unfortunately, she's too late. Nora finds out the woman was a hoarder, mostly of books. In the process of helping the woman's family clean out the house Nora secretly follows clues the woman left her to a secret library somewhere in the house. As she does this, all the house's secrets get revealed.

There were a few mysteries going on in this book. The primary one, the death of the woman, wrapped up pretty much as I expected. The other mysteries as well. It was all still an interesting story that kept me reading.

I have loved every series I have read by Ellery Adam’s. The characters, the settings and their back stories. Nora has been delivering books to a recluse for years. On this visit she doesn’t come to the door in their agreed time limit so Nora calls. Once the phone is finally answered all she hears is the word help. Upon finding Lucille at the bottom of the steps, she’s on the hunt for the killer. Using the book that was left to her, she searches for the hidden treasure using the clues in the book.

While delivering books to an elderly resident, Lucille Wynter. Nora becomes concerned when Mrs. Wynter doesn't answer the door. Then when Nora gets an unexpected invite from her agoraphobic customer, Nora has to force her way inside. Nora is just a little too late, finding Mrs. Wynter at the bottom of the staircase unresponsive. After finding a note written to Nora, she wonders if Mrs. Wynter's death was an accident or foul play.

This is a great series, and with each new book there is another emotional journey to discover. Each book can be read as a standalone. This is a cozy mystery series that deals with some darker topics. The characters are flawed; you learn the good, the bad, and sometimes the ugly truth of what they are dealing with emotionally and physically. This is what makes this series unique, and the stories stick with you. Nora's character has evolved so much from the first of the series. She is strong, more confident, and much less of a loner/more involved in community. The character evolution though the series has been wonderful, you look forward to seeing the main characters growth from book to book. Even the new characters such as Mrs. Wynter, you get to know the demons they live with and can feel compassion for them. The mysteries are well-plotted with plenty of red herrings to keep you guessing whodunit until the big reveal.

These are my thought and opinions.

4.5 stars - This is the seventh book in the Secret, Book, and Scone Society series and is one of my favorites! Nora Pennington loves books and loves sharing that love with her customers. She has a unique relationship with one of her regular customers. Nora delivers books to her monthly, but has never been inside Lucille Wynter's house. Lucille serves Nora tea and cookies in a mudroom when Nora brings the book and doesn't talk much about her personal life. When Lucille doesn't answer the door for a planned delivery, Nora enters her house and finds her dead at the bottom of a staircase. Lucille leaves something for Nora that leads her on a mysterious treasure hunt as well as a search for a killer.

This book has a great balance of Nora at the bookstore, with her close friends, with the man she's seeing (Sheriff Grant McCabe), and her investigation. Nora is wonderful with her friends, loyal and willing to trust them. I was frustrated with her for not telling McCabe more about what she was up to, but eventually they have some very touching scenes. The book is suspenseful and Nora's very unique "treasure hunt" kept my interest from beginning to end. The book recommendations throughout the story, which are also summarized at the end of the book, are also outstanding.

I received a review copy of this ebook through the courtesy of NetGalley and Kensington Books, but my review is voluntary and unbiased.

“It was a hot shower, a bowl of ice cream, and a ball game on TV. It was a cat sleeping on the corner of the bed, the golden glow of a lamp, and a warm house. It was knowing that tomorrow was a fresh start. It was an unopened book, waiting to be read.”

Coming back to Miracle Springs, to Miracle Books and our beloved Nora Pennington always feels like coming home to exactly what’s described in the quote. Every time I enter this world, I can count on having a good time — I know I will smile, laugh, cry and be angry, but I also know that there will always be something I’ll take away from the book that’ll make me a better person. This book, more than the others, has taught me that every day is a new opportunity to be human and that it’s never too late to start over and be kinder to everybody around.

This story is so similar to the others but altogether so different. It is a story about family trauma and the painful road to healing from it. I think the theme of healing permeates every line in that book. Books, more than anything, have healing powers greater than any medicine:

“It was just a beginning, really, because hers would be a long road to recovery. But the book would be a start. Word by word. Page by page. It would distract and inspire her. It would fill her mind with ideas and permeate her dreams with images. It would fill the cracks in her soul with the light of hope. That was the magic of books.”

I love that Ellery Adams always finds something new to convey with her stories. I love that Nora Pennington and all Secret, Book and Scone Society members are completely human. But what I love most about these books is how unforced it all is. No matter mine or the author’s political, religious or any other kind of beliefs — in Ellery Adams’ books you will find characters that are of all shapes and sizes, characters that do not pretend to be something they are not. Here, you will not find anything being shoved down your throat, and yet I am still pleasantly surprised at how masterfully all those personalities are crafted. I want to be friends with them all.

Although I personally found the killer's motive to be a bit lacking in substance and the ending to be a bit predictable as soon as the second death occurred, that didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying this ultimate cozy mystery.

But let’s not reduce this story to mere terms — this is much more than a cozy mystery; it’s, once again, a lesson in life being taught by the kindest of teachers — the main character and her friends. I can’t wait for the next one!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The newest instalment of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society series is one of the best yet! Nora Pennington owns Miracle Books, a bookstore in the small town of Miracle Springs, North Carolina that focuses on Bibliotherapy. Nora knows what books will help someone heal from whatever they’re experiencing in their life.

Part of her work includes delivering books to locals like Lucille Wynter, an elderly woman living in what is rumoured to be a haunted house. Never letting her past the front boot room, Lucille is private about her home and life.

During her most recent delivery, Nora is left waiting at the door with a bag of books. Worried, she calls Lucille who ends up begging for help and then hanging up the phone. Once inside, she realizes why Lucille has shut herself away from the world and what she’s been hiding. At the bottom of the stairs, lays Lucille, dead, amongst her hoarded home.

Nora feels so much guilt and pain for not noticing Lucille’s situation earlier; so when she realizes Lucille has left her a note and a book; Nora gets to work figuring out what secrets are buried beneath Lucille’s possessions.

This is such an amazing addition to the series and as always, I feel transported to Miracle Springs and like I’m in the Secret, Book, and Scone society with Nora and her best friends Hester, Estella, and June. This book is perfect for those looking for a cozy mystery with an autumn vibe. I’ve read all the books in this series and already can’t wait for the next one. I think this would also work as a standalone but I hope people will read the rest of the series once they’re done!

Thank you so much to Net Galley and Kensington Publishing for an e-ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I biked 5.5 miles home from work last week. That might not sound like a lot, but I hadn't done it before and there were some steep sections, so I didn't want to have much to carry. In addition to my wallet, phone, and keys, I carried The Little Lost Library, I could not sacrifice reading it on my lunch break by leaving it home, nor could I miss out on reading it that night by leaving it at work. That's how captivating Adams's new installment of the Secret, Book, and Scone Society is! In fact, this mystery might be my favorite yet. It has a Nancy Drew vibe!

Adams continues to develop her characters organically, and the reader's appreciation of them deepens as they strengthen their own bonds. While I was disappointed in one character, it seemed like that person acted true to self, so even though I didn't like what happened, I feel like it had to.

The Little Lost Library is a must-read if you like cozy mysteries, Ellery Adams's books, or novels featuring books. I am only upset that I blew through it so fast!

This story was pretty weak on the characters. Not many of the familiar, beloved characters were used for this one. It’s also feeling a little formulaic. Nora is getting annoying with all of her secret keeping, despite what she should’ve learned about how keeping secrets does her no favors. I learned a few things about little libraries from this book, but I hate to say that was probably the best part of it.

Take your traditional well-constructed cozy, add empathy, wisdom, an appreciation of the value of friendship. Meticulously plotted, the Little Lost Library feels like a warm cozy hug yet deals sensitively with topics such as hoarding and addiction and after affects of trauma. Immersive, you won't want to put it down. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

In Ellery Adams latest book, The Little Lost Library, she truly has outdone herself! Between the intriguing story, a mysterious book within the book you will be writing the clues down yourself on paper to try and solve the puzzle! In my opinion this is her best Secret, Book, and Scone novel to date!

It all begins when Nora arrives to drop books of at an elderly woman named Lucielle's very dilapidated mansion in Miracle Springs. They have had an agreement for quite a while that Nora would bring her books in exchange for some Lucille had in her house. Although Nora has never stepped foot into the house, only being allowed to enter the mud room where over tea, they would chat just a bit.

But unfortunately, on this visit, Nora discovers Lucielle has passed away, at first thinking from old age. The mansion known as Wynter Mansion was involved in a terrible scandal years ago and whatever happened, Lucielle never left the house again. When Nora is able to see the inside, she discovers it is filled with books and papers with practically nowhere to move. Lucille was a hoarder. Within all the mess Nora discovers Lucille has left her a very special book, The Little Lost Library. Why? She makes the decision to take the book before anyone else shows up.

As Lucille's children two of whom left the area as soon as they were able and one who unknowingly to Nora lived in back of the mansion, swoop in to discover the secrets the mansion holds because they truly believe something valuable is hidden inside.

While the house begins to become decluttered Nora starts to read the book and realizes it is a book of clues she must somehow solve and put the pieces of the puzzle together. But more importantly, she begins to believe Lucille's death was no accident. That's when she and her boyfriend who is the Sheriff of the town and her Secret, Book, and Scone Society, her valuable, loving network of friends assist in finding out just what is going on.

Unfortunately for Nora, someone does not want her looking into this mystery. She finds herself in a desperate situation as well as fearing for her life. The more clues which come to light points to not only a terrible dark secret from the past but to someone who wants to hurt her.

What mystery does this mansion hold? More important who killed Lucille.

The Little Lost Library will have you riveted! The twists and turns and clues extremely exciting! And of course, the Society of Women once again remain strong for each other! As in every book there are suggestions from Miracle Books, Nora's bookstore so keep a look out for any you might want to read!

Thank you #NetGalley #KensingtonCozies #ElleryAdams #TheLittleLostLibrary for the advanced copy.

Incredible mystery that has been plotted so well that you won't be able to stop reading. Seriously if you haven't started this cozy series yet, you need to start now. You do need to start with book one and read the series in order so that you can get to know the characters better, but trust me when I say that it will be well worth your time. The stories of the individual characters are compelling and will draw you while the mysteries will have you craving even more! This book in particular was so well plotted that I couldn't stop reading as I had to know what was going to happen next. The characters that the author has created in this series are so amazingly realistic. They are flawed individuals who have come together to make the family of their choice to do the best that they can to make the world around them a better place while also just trying to survive and thrive. I can't wait to see what happens next for these characters especially a few new ones introduced in this book!

I’m going to be honest, I struggled a lot through this book. This used to be one of my favorite series and I just feel like the more that come out they become less interesting. It was very obvious who the “bad guy” was as soon as the character was introduced. The storyline felt very slow and boring and Jasper & Hester’s breakup was kind of frustrating/annoying. Hallowell is also a character that doesn’t really have any purpose in the story…so we’re supposed to believe Jasper was cheating on Hester with Hallowell essentially and Hester is like “it’s all good, we’re still wonderful friends” idk it just really bothered me.
It also felt like the ladies in the secret book & scone society didn’t really have much of a role in this book so it was all very Nora focused which is fine except it just didn’t feel exciting or suspenseful at all.
I honestly feel like it’s time to retire this series because it just doesn’t have the same excitement it did in the earlier books. Everything feels kinda of dragged out.

Nora is a bookstore owner. She delivers some of her books to reclusive reader Lucille Wynter. Lucille doesn't let anyone into her mansion, she makes Nora sit in the boot room. Nora gets worried one day when she comes to deliver books and Lucille doesn't answer the door. Nora calls Lucille and she says it's too late. Nora breaks open the door and finds Lucille dead. Lucille has also left Nora an obscure note and book. A self published children's book about Wynter House. Nora has to find out what happened to Lucille following the clues in the book. Lucille is a hoarder though which means wading through piles of stuff and books to find clues.
The mystery to this book is wonderful. I also loved the depiction of hoarding and cleaning out a hoarders house.

This is one of my favorite series. While it is a cozy in the traditional sense, with its amateur sleuth, small town, and dead bodies, it also has this amazing heartwarming, feel-good component that makes you want to visit Nora, her friends, and her amazing bookshop. I loved the treasure hunt for the little library and the addition of a new staff member. Can’t wait to read more in this series!

I think this may be the best book the author has written in this series. I loved it. The story of wynter house was mesmerizing, it reminded me a bit of The Starling House. Its secrets kept me hooked until the very last page. This book pulled me out of a reading slump. I loved following the clues with Nora. I loved the writing. I hope this series continues.

Nora regularly delivers books to Lucille, an elderly woman who never leaves her home, Wynter House. Through a series of events, Nora finds Lucille dead at the bottom of her stairs but she left Nora a little book with a story about a little lost library. Nora can’t help but follow the clues inside to find it!

I LOVED everything about this story, from book quotes, to the charismatic people living in Miracle Springs to the treasure map like clues, leading to discoveries inside Wynter House. As pieces of the puzzle fall in place, the tale of enigmatic Lucille’s life unfolds and might hold the key to her death.

Nora’s care for her store Miracle Books, AND her customers, brought back fond memories of when I was a bookseller/manager. I immediately felt right at home with Nora and her circle of friends. Ellery Adams’ writing is engrossing and suspenseful while simultaneously charming and delightful. You can feel her love of books with every page.

To say this is a cozy mystery is an understatement. THE LITTLE LOST LIBRARY is like a series of warm hugs from close friends after a wonderful evening together! I was having such a lovely time, I didn’t want it to end. Thankfully for me (and YOU), there are several books in this series, though this can definitely be read as a stand alone.

Miracle Springs is about to have a new resident cause I’m moving in! I do have one bone to pick with you Miss Ellery ...now I’m HUNGRY!! I’d like a strawberry muffin, a chocolate filled pastry and some fruit cobbler please! And don’t even get me started on the dinners...

If you want the complete package of mystery, suspense, friendship and humor, grab this immediately!

In each book of the Secret, Book & Scone Society, Ellery Adams brings us a beautiful community of friends and a warm love of books. Every time a read a novel in this series, I remember how literature can help us heal and connect us to other people.

At the same time, Adams also shows different aspects of the sadness and loneliness humans face. This time, a character is a hoarder who has faced a lot of trauma in her life. We are brought into her house, and the situation can be difficult to read about. For me, this balance between the joys and pains of life is what makes this series a standout, along with the wonderful characters. Sheriff Grant McCabe reaches new heights in this one as a perfect boyfriend, let me tell you. He has a lot of patience with Nora.

Oh this series has my heart. It is quite emotional every time and especially this time when you see how the victim has been living; trapped with her own demons. And then all the reveals that come along the way. It goes to show that no matter someone's quirks or attitude, you just have no idea what someone is going through or has been through. I love how caring Nora is with everyone, even those who treat her badly or take advantage of her. I looove how her relationship with McCade is progressing and I wish them soooo much happiness. I LOVE a word-play scavenger hunt of sorts so this was a lot of fun to follow along with! This book just has all the most wonderful elements as a grittier cozy (my favorite) and the gorgeous writing to bring it to life. I always tear up a bit when the friends are spending time together, supporting and loving each other.

Thank to the publisher for a free ARC; my thoughts and review are my own.

I love this series and couldn’t wait to read this latest one. Sadly it didn’t meet my expectations. It didn’t have the same “cozy” feel as the others.

Also there were a few typos and at one point Nora checks her pockets making sure she has her pepper spray and her phone, then a few pages later it says she wishes she had remembered her pepper spray.

Especially when I am following the details/clues to solve the crime, those mistakes are irritating.

THE LITTLE LOST LIBRARY
(Secret, Book, & Scone Society #7)
By Ellery Adams

3.5 stars rounded down
Cris Dukehart did a nice reading of this story. I believe it was my first time listening to her, and she was perfect for the cozy small-town vibe of this book.

I won’t go into the full summary here, since the book’s description already covers a lot of detail. This genre isn’t my usual, and I typically start series at the beginning—but this was a book club choice, so I went with #7 first.

Overall it was a decent read with some lovely bookish moments throughout, some secrets, and a murder. Since I jumped into the series partway through, I’m not sure I had all the background to really get some of character development.

Nora’s visit to deliver books to the town recluse is rewarded by a mystery to solve. Lucille had never invited Nora into her old, dilapidated mansion, but the day of the delivery, the old woman never even answered the door. Her response by phone prompted Nora to rush inside to try to save the woman. What she found was Lucille’s body and the results of a lifetime of hoarding, especially books stacked and piled everywhere—and a note to Nora inviting her to solve some riddles. Book quotes, book references, miniature books, a book club and a search for a library by a bookseller—it’s a great cozy mystery for booklovers.

This was my favorite in this series! Great storytelling. I am beginning to think I need to move to Miracle Springs and get to know Hester and Nora and crew. A true delight!

Thanks to the publisher, via Netgalley, for an advance e-galley for honest review.

Miracle Springs is one of my favorite cozy mystery settings to return to. This one is excellent, and I think what is most heartwarming about it is that Nora really gets to see what she and her bookstore mean to the town, even if it is hard for her to receive their support. The books mentioned or referenced in this always add something special to the story, and the series moves the characters along wonderfully.

Thank you to Kensington Books and TLC Book Tours for the free books. These opinions are my own.

This book is so perfect for fall reading. It increases the creepy factor for the series by largely being set around a house known for being haunted. I loved reading by my fireplace with the sound of rain outside.

And as the cover and title promise, there is a little library. But rather than being a book exchange, it is filled with miniature books. And Nora is on a quest to find it.

Nora gets a bit carried away by her investigation. She makes some poor choices that ultimately are completely relatable, especially for a book lover like me.

The story kept me on my toes throughout. And best of all, it concluded with a book list of all the books recommended at her bookstore.
