Finding Faith in the Field

Rate this book
On a cold April day, Ben Hylden tried on his suit coat for the upcoming school prom, then sped toward nearby Park River, ND, for an appointment. Running late and driving too fast, he lost control of his car on ice, flipped the car and was thrown out the passenger's door-plunging face first into an icy field. Ben's face and body were crushed, along with his dreams of being a basketball star. As his battered body lay in the field, Ben's life seemed to be coming to an end. However, it turned out to only be the beginning of a remarkable journey of faith that showed him glimpses of life beyond this world, and gave him a new perspective on what matters most.

I met this young man at the Pride of Dakota product showcase today, and was drawn to his booth because he's so young (early 20s) to have already written a book. What great life lesson could this young man have that compelled him to publish a book? It just took me a moment to ascertain from the photos at his booth that this young author, Ben, had survived a very horrible car accident and has something important to share. I visited with him for awhile. He told me bits of his story, and I bought his book.

I started reading it when I got home, and less than three hours later, I finished. It's a very quick read. For someone his age, the writing is really good, save for some repetition and a few predictable cliffhanger phrases.

Ben's story is a great wake-up call to anyone who questions their faith or struggles with their day-to-day journey. His survival is miraculous, his courage is remarkable, and his faith is inspirational. He truly has been given the gift of life to share his experiences and help each of us believe that we do not walk alone, no matter where our paths take us. He also reminds us of the power of prayer and the importance of community when someone is faced with incredible challenges. He speaks candidly about his humanity and his humility, which makes me care about him and wish the best for him and his path in life all the more.

A very worthwhile read!

Have you ever read a book and felt like you were going through what the main character was? This book is a horrific story that Ben went through even though it was very life changing. I can say I have after reading Finding Faith in the Field my life has changed tremendously.
On a cold April day, Ben Hylden tried on his suit coat for the upcoming school prom, then sped toward Park River, ND, for an appointment. Running late and driving too fast, he lost control of his car on ice, flipped the car and was thrown out of the passenger door- plunging face-first into an icy field. Ben's face and body were crushed, along with his dreams of being a basketball star. As his body laid in the field, Ben's life seemed to be coming to an end. However, it turned out to only be the beginning of a remarkable journey of faith that showed him glimpses of life beyond this world, and gave him a new perspective on what matters most.
No matter how bad something is you can't give up or it won't get any better. Ben learned this as he was recovering from his car accident that he was in on a cold day near Park River, North Dakota.
Miracles from Heaven is a very similar book because they both are memoirs. Miracles from Heaven is about Annabel who has pseudo-obstruction mobility disorder and antral hypo motility disorder. Finding Faith in the Field is about Ben Hylden and his long quick recovery after he rolled car speeding down an icy gravel road while losing control as he hit an approach and was ejected out of the vehicle. In both of these books the main character is mainly in the hospital and giving up of their faith that they will get better. They both come to know that if you pray well enough and believe that others are caring for them they will get better faster. Also, miracles do happen unexpectedly. In both magnificent books the main characters have a magical ending and got better unexpectedly .
"Everything seemed to be lining up perfectly in my life to the reason why God had saved my life, but I figured I should just pray about it and let things play out according to His will."(Hylden 106). This quote stuck out to my because it states how Ben feels about his faith now.
Every time I turn on to a gravel road the story of Ben Hylden pops into my head. Just the simple thought that I could be the one in the hospital with hundreds of bones broken. After reading this book it has changed how I drive and how much time I give myself to drive somewhere. This is for sure a book that I wasn’t able to put it down. I have personally read Finding Faith in the Field five times because it makes me realize that life can end within a blink on an eye. Ben did an amazing job as he wrote the book because he got me to the point to where it was very hard to put the book down during any of my free time.
I would recommend this book to all people who can drive. It will put a major toll of your life. Every time that you step into a vehicle you are putting yourself in major danger. No matter if you are a good driver or not. It's everything around you.
Not only is he an amazing memoir writer but he is a phenomenal motivational speaker. He came to my church and he spoke about his fast-long recovery. Stating that faith is the most important thing when it comes to getting better after a horrible accident. You need to always believe that there are others praying for you all the way in order for you to get better. Just believe in yourself and others and you will get far in life.

Finding Faith in the Field

As a teacher, I see the challenges students face everyday. They take on these challenges in many different ways. Some students fight through the challenges, while others hide. In the book “Finding Faith in the Field” by Benjamin Duane Hylden, Benjamin faced the typical challenges of a teenager, plus healing from a life altering crash.

It was a typical April day in North Dakota. The weather was chilly and the ground was still frozen. Benjamin was going about his normal daily life of farm chores and other responsibilities he takes care of. When he was running late for an appointment, Benjamin takes the back roads to be on time. As any North Dakotan knows, the back roads in North Dakota, during the winter time, are not so forgiving.

Benjamin takes us on a journey of his healing process throughout the book. He shares the small and large victories of gaining his normal life back. Benjamin is also not bashful in sharing the low points in his healing. One of the constancy during this process was his faith and love for God.

Throughout his life, Benjamin was surrounded by people who helped show him that God always loves and guides us in our daily lives. One of my favorite quotes from Benjamin is “I believe that God had a plan for me, but I didn’t know what it was yet. And I knew I had to trust in it, even if it meant not knowing what the future held for me.” I often share this quote with my students in class, when they don’t know their life plan. Benjamin reminds us all that God’s plan for each and everyone of us will be a different path with highs and lows experiences.

Benjamin’s book Finding Faith in the Field takes readers on a roller coaster of emotions. From tears in our eyes as he barely clings to life to smiles on our faces as he spread his message of love to people everywhere. This book is a great read for all people and families to share together in love. Benjamin shows us that God helps guide us, cares for us, and most importantly loves us.

I had known Ben's story years ago but wasn't until recently I finally decided to read the book. The word inspiring is the word that keeps on popping into my mind when I read his words, and imagine what he has all conquered and continues to conquer. I have had the honor getting to know Ben, and I cannot think of a person more genuine to his word and what he speaks than him. He has done amazing things and continues to do amazing things. I would recommend this book to anyone, and would hope that it touches them the same way it did myself. I look forward to hearing more from Ben as time goes on!

I couldn’t stop reading this book! Finished it the day I started it. Such a great story and a strong young man who’s come to know that Jesus works wonders everyday. Should be required reading in every Christian school and Bible class. About page 40, I recommended this book to a friend and she promptly ordered it.

Excellent message! The actual writing leaves room for improvement and movement past plot summary and "telling," but the author's positive intent and faith-filled message and heart shine through this book.

The first word that comes to mind after reading Finding Faith in the Field by Benjamin Hylden was grateful. Hylden was grateful to be alive after a horrific car accident. After the accident Hylden realizes what is important in life and forms a closer relationship with God and his family. This is his story about his life after the accident, his road to recovery and his spiritual journey.

I enjoyed reading Finding Faith in the Field. It is nice to be able to read a story that leaves you feeling at peace and wanting to get closer to God. I thought that Hylden was very fortunate to have been surrounded by people that loved him and were willing to help him. That is something you rarely see nowadays. He is very lucky to live in such a caring community. It was interesting how fast he recovered and what he went through during the recovery process. I am glad that he was able to play sports again even if only for a short time. I really liked that he included pictures of his family and friends in the book. Especially the pictures of himself before and after the accident. Personally I think he looks great for having had so many broken facial bones. Everything happens for a reason, and I see that his accident was a blessing in disguise. Without the accident occurring he may have never realized what is truly important in life. I can see this book being inspirational to people, especially if they too have been in an accident.
