Just a slight roundup from 3.75. Honestly, this book was better than the first in the series. It recaps most major events from the first book from Cooper’s POV, adding in new elements and mystery. Because we already know the end of the first book, this one presents a new set of challenges that keep you reading.
This book has a lot more world building than the first, with Copper sharing his research and life with readers. That being said, it’s a lot of telling and a lack of actual showing. There’s really just paragraphs of facts about the world, and then you move right on.
Cooper was a great character to have as the MMC and narrator because he is the most developed in the series. Through him, we get to see development for other characters, including Suri, Malachi, Death, and more. We also get to see who Cooper really is outside of Kim’s best friend.
Overall, you definitely need to read this book after the first, but the impact of this one is slightly taken away because you know how the first ends. Similarly, you’re basically reading two books of the same plot but with added details before the next book in the series that is set up to have a new plot. There’s no hint of this new plot in the first book, so you essentially have to read the same book twice to move on to the third in the series.
Like the first book, this one is rather short and feels closer to a novella than a lengthy novel.
While I’m not dying for the next book in the series, I likely will pick it up if given the opportunity.
Thank you so much to Gemma Ashborne and Book Nerd for an ARC of this book. All ideas are entirely my own and not influenced by the ARC status.
