This is a delightful "found-family" fantasy aimed at the middle grade audience. Ista is determined to find her father. She decides to move to Shelwich alone, but she makes friends and allies on the way. The pace is a bit slow for an older reader, but this appears to be the start of a series, and the author is careful to set up how the magic works. The magic and the characters are a delight, promising more fun to come.

This was a wonderful debut novel for this author, and I really hope she continues the adventures of Ista Flit and her friends. It was a quick read and I liked how Ista developed throughout the story. At the beginning we discover that she is doing random jobs for a shifty guy who saved her life, and she has to do 20 of them before he will give her back her father's clarinet. Great guy, right? But we also learn that in this world, many people have particular talents that come with the high tide. In Ista's case, she's able to change herself to look like anyone she's seen before. At the same time, we know she is looking for information about what happened to her father, who disappeared suddenly, and the rumor is that he was taken along with other missing people.

I loved this story and was easily drawn into the mystery as Ista eventually teams up with two other kids to figure out what's happening to all the missing people. I loved many of the other side characters, with a few surprises about them along the way. Ista was a character really easy to love, and the worldbuilding was wonderful. This is a wonderful read for lovers of fantasy, and would be appropriate for ages 8 and up, although younger readers would need to be read to, but this would be a great book to do so. As an adult, I really enjoyed this story myself and as I said, I would love to read more books with these characters in this world. I will be recommending this book to my younger students.

A great middle grade adventure, it’s filled with magic, intrigue and likeable characters. Ista, as the book title suggests, is a girl of many faces.

Her Tide blessing is the ability to take on the appearance of others, which certainly comes in handy when you’re carrying out every bit and odds and end to pay off a debt. She also has her own agenda, finding out more about the Grilks and the disappearance of those in the village she loves.

It was so easy to read and the pages disappeared in no time. It’s super addicting and very easy to read one chapter after another and fall into the ‘just one more chapter’ trap.

Ista was great to follow and navigate this new world of tide magic with her. It was great getting to know Shelwich. What all great debut novel! Can’t wait for more from this author.

'Amongst the cobbled streets of Shelwich, magic rises and falls with the tide' Great premise and the book did not disappoint; I read a lot of magical fantasy so I'm always excited by an original take. Main character Ista Flit has a rare talent and the brilliant way this is used by the author, along with the fantastic world building , makes it so easy to sink into the story and root for Ista as her search for her father gets her embroiled in the mysteries and the monsters of Shelwich. The writing and plotting are excellent and the book itself is a thing of beauty. Can't wait for the next installment from author Clare Harlow. An easy 5 stars.

This book was interesting in the sense that it was very original, though at times the magic seemed muddled and a little confusing. It also seemed a little random/limitless and not entirely connected to the tides or water, which was the whole point. BUT! There was a werewolf snake creature which is always cool AND he wasn’t necessarily the villain. With that said, the villains were a bit disappointing and too politically charged for my liking. Overall a whimsical entertaining read. Don’t think I would read the other books when they come out though.

The writing is dreamy, whimsical and intriguing. And the illustrations from Karl James Mountford add so much to the magic of the story. Wonderful.

Ista Flit wants her father’s clarinet back, and she is determined to do whatever it takes to have it returned to her possession. While her Tide gift—the ability to wear others’ faces—is useful in this endeavor, she is not infallible. When a task Ista has agreed to complete goes disastrously wrong one evening, Ista finds herself inadvertently revealing her gift to a boy who is certain there is someone controlling the nefarious grilk creatures who are terrorizing the people in their town. And though Ista is used to working alone, she quickly becomes entangled in Nate’s project and begins seeing her world in an entirely new light.

This middle grade fantasy novel is compelling from the very beginning thanks to its use of rich language and descriptions and the depth of the storytelling itself. While the world building necessary for this story is vast, it is done in a way that immerses readers in Ista’s world while keeping the momentum of her tale moving forward. Additionally, readers are willing to suspend their disbelief with abandon because the characters themselves are highly relatable despite their exclusive existence in a fictional narrative. Thoughtful backstories and character development connect readers to the protagonists in this novel, and readers will be eager to discover what happens next.

Short chapters and occasional illustrations make this book appeal to middle grade readers, while the narrative speaks to older readers, as well. Choice vocabulary and high stakes encourage newer middle grade readers to stretch their abilities because they are being trusted to be able to do so. Readers who enjoy fantasy stories with strong characters, danger, and just the right amount of good versus evil will relish Ista’s adventure. Poised for a sequel, this book ends in a way that will have readers clambering for the next installment. At once a tale of friendship, bravery, and coming into one’s own, this fantasy adventure is an excellent addition to library collections for middle grade readers.

Great middle grade! Whimsical, magical, and found family vibes.

Isla Flit is going to find her father. He went to find them a home in a new town. Once settled, he would send for her. He disappeared before he had a chance.
Isla travels to the town of Shelwich to find him.
The towns magic is linked to the Tides. No one can be out after dark because that's when people disappear. With help from some new friends, she is determined to find out who or what is responsible.

This is a new favorite middle grade for me. I loved the magic and the town. The characters and residents are so heartwarming. Well, most of them. Such a fun read!

Eine Geschichte, die Magie und Geheimnisse vereint, um junge Leser zu begeistern. Es ist der erste Teil einer Reihe, die viel Lesespaß verspricht und in der ein Mädchen mit einer seltenen magischen Fähigkeit die Hauptrolle spielt. Sowohl meine Tochter als auch ich haben das Buch gelesen, und wir haben beide die Geschichte geliebt. Ich finde, es ist eine bezaubernde Geschichte, die einen von der ersten Seite an fesselt. Wenn man dieses Buch liest, kann man nicht anders, als sich in die einzigartige Welt zu verlieben, die die Autorin geschaffen hat. Und natürlich auch in die wunderbaren Charaktere.

Meine Meinung:

Dies ist eines der besten Bücher für die Mittelstufe, die ich je gelesen habe. Atemberaubender Aufbau der Welt, großartige Charaktere, geheimnisvolle Handlung, alles ist ausgezeichnet. Und das Konzept? Eine bezaubernde Stadt mit einer geheimnisvollen Flut, die jedem Bewohner einen magischen Segen bringt. Hört sich das nicht fantastisch an? Die Geschichte hat jede Menge Wendungen, um dich auf Trab zu halten, das kann ich dir garantieren. Wenn du Ista und ihre neuen Freunde bei der Suche nach ihren vermissten Verwandten begleitest, wirst du garantiert eine tolle Zeit haben. Wer ist für das Verschwinden verantwortlich? Keine Spoiler, ihr müsst das Buch lesen, um das herauszufinden.

Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass diese Art von Geschichte immer besser und besser wurde. Als ich das Ende erreichte, war ich teilweise enttäuscht, da ich nicht wollte, dass es vorbei ist. Ich habe mich in die einzigartige Magie verliebt, ganz zu schweigen von der bezaubernden Welt. Und ich habe das Gefühl, dass die Fortsetzung genauso fantastisch sein wird, ich bin wirklich gespannt, wie es weitergeht. Aus einem anderen Blickwinkel betrachtet, ist es erwähnenswert, dass diese Geschichte viele wunderbare Lektionen zu bieten hat, auch in Bezug auf Mut und das Einnehmen eines Standpunkts. Die Leser werden auch an den Wert von Freundschaft und Familie erinnert.

Die Hauptheldin war mein absoluter Favorit, da sie so viel Mut hat und nie aufhört, für das zu kämpfen, woran sie glaubt. Sie lässt sich nicht unterkriegen, wenn sie herausgefordert wird, etwas, das ich meiner Tochter beibringen möchte. Die Geschichte mag zwar eine magische Fantasie sein, aber sie enthält viele Lektionen, die man auch in der realen Welt anwenden kann, wie ich oben erwähnt habe. Mir hat auch gefallen, dass die Geschichte ein schnelles Tempo hat und viele Abenteuer enthält, die auch den zögerlichsten Leser fesseln. Außerdem ist es alles andere als vorhersehbar, so dass keine Langeweile aufkommt. Selbst als Erwachsener habe ich eine Seite nach der anderen umgeblättert, nur um zu erfahren, was als Nächstes passiert.

Zusammenfassung:

Wow, das war so eine tolle Geschichte, ich habe jedes Stück davon geliebt. Eine magische Fantasie, mit viel Abenteuer und einem Problem, das gelöst werden muss. Schnelles Tempo, actionreich, perfekt für junge Erwachsene, die entkommen und ein tolles Leseerlebnis haben wollen. Außerdem enthält es viele Lektionen, die man im echten Leben anwenden kann. Meiner Meinung nach ein ausgezeichnetes Buch, ich freue mich schon auf den nächsten Teil der Reihe. Meiner Meinung nach sehr empfehlenswert.

What worked:
It seems like characters who can change their physical appearances are usually bad guys but Ista breaks that mold. The Tide is the source of magic and all of the characters, except for Nat, have abilities. It’s expected in this society. Ista is at the mercy of a notorious thief, Alexo, so readers will root for her as she tries to reacquire her missing father’s last possession. Ista feels there must be a little bit of good inside of Alexo but readers may doubt that. Their relationship is not mutually beneficial as readers will sense Alexo can’t be trusted. The uncertainty of their relationship creates an interesting conflict to follow. However, Ista never suspects what Alexo is really up to.
An unexpected mystery is introduced when Ista crosses paths with Nat. Nat’s mother is a newspaper reporter and her magical talent is getting hunches that are never wrong. She suspects someone is controlling the grilks that are being blamed for disappearances across the city, possibly including Ista’s own father. The grilks are so feared that citizens are afraid to even say that word out loud. No one has ever escaped a grilk encounter before but Ista has now done it twice. Ista and her friends follow leads, investigate suspects, and are still stumped by confusing evidence. The victims of the grilk attacks must have something in common, but what? The author manages to conceal the truth for much of the story and even then, surprising twists and turns await.
The Tide sometimes feels like more than a natural occurrence depending on the setting. Its power comes and goes each day much like the tides found in large bodies of water. There are times during the story when Ista must feel for the magic or moments when the Tide is upset that she’s using it. The author artfully describes this relationship and the narrative as evidenced by this sentence later in the book. “The Tide was rising, its magic nosing at Ista like a puppy seeking attention…” Besides displaying the appearances of others, Ista can manifest their magical powers. The Tide doesn’t like her doing this and she can’t use the abilities for long.
What didn’t work as well:
There are many moving parts to the plot that some young readers might not appreciate. However, most readers will like the uncertainty and creative writing of the story.
The final verdict:
The author has crafted an imaginative, suspenseful adventure that will captivate young readers. Ista’s determination to locate her father and the other missing citizens makes her character admirable and appealing. I highly recommend you give this book a shot.

Wir werden direkt ins Geschehen geworfen, weswegen ich mich zu Anfang erst einmal orientieren musste. Dies geschah aber sehr schnell und ich war gespannt darauf, Ista Flit kennenzulernen, die gezwungen ist, für den mysteriösen Alexo Rokis zu stehlen, damit sie die Klarinette ihres Vaters von ihm wiederbekommt. Zudem sucht sie nach ihrem Vater, der verschwunden ist ebenso wie einige andere Personen in Shelwich.

Ista ist ein tolles und lebenswertes Mädchen, das ein gutes Herz hat, viel Mut beweist und ziemlich neugierig ist, was ihr einige Male fast zum Verhängnis wird. Dies führt aber auch dazu, dass sie dem Geheimnis um die verschwunden Menschen und dem um die gruseligen Grilks auf den Grund gehen will. Ich habe Ista zusammen mit ihren neuen Freunden Ruby und Nat gerne auf ihre Spurensuche begleitet. Diese fördert einige Überraschungen zutage, mit denen ich nicht gerechnet hatte. Dadurch blieb die Handlung interessant und spannend. Zudem müssen Ista, Ruby und Nat auf ihrer Spurensuche einige Rätsel lösen, was sie vor einige Herausforderungen stellt und sie geraten einige Male in große Gefahr. Dies hat mich nicht nur dazu animiert, selbst herauszufinden, wie alles zusammenhängt und wer hinter allem steckt, sondern ebenso dazu beitragen, dass die Spannung aufrechtzuerhalten.

Das Rätsel um die Grilks und alles rund um die Magie, die von den Gezeiten abhängig ist, fand ich interessant. Gut gefallen hat mir, dass nicht jede Person herausragende magische Fähigkeiten hat, sondern einige einfach nur kleine Spielereien waren oder es sich dabei um für das tägliche Leben nützliche Fähigkeiten handelte, wie die eigene Augenfarbe zu verändern oder beim Springen immer auf den Füßen zu landen. Außerdem hat die Autorin die einzelnen Personen und die Handlungsorte so anschaulich beschrieben, dass ich sie mir gut vorstellen konnte.

Fazit:
Eine spannende und magische Geschichte, in der wir Ista und ihre beiden neuen Freunde Ruby und Nat auf die Suche nach dem Geheimnis um die gruseligen Grilks und dem um die verschwundenen Menschen in Shelwich begeben. Ich habe dies sehr gerne getan, war gespannt, was sie alles herausfinden und habe die ganze Zeit selbst versucht, die ganzen Rätseln zu lösen. Da auf Ista, Ruby und Nat einige Rätsel warten, sie einige Male in Gefahr geraten und es einige Überraschungen gibt, mit denen ich nicht gerechnet habe, war für ordentlich Spannung gesorgt. Außerdem hat es mir gefallen, dass es nicht nur besondere magische Fähigkeiten gab, sondern einige einfach nur kleine Spielereien waren oder sich für den Alltag als nützlich erwiesen.

Eine magisch-düstere Detektivgeschichte
Ista Flit lebt in einer Welt, in der fast alle Menschen mit Gezeitenmagie geboren werden. Jeder erhält dabei eine ganz eigene Begabung, die bei Flut stärker ausgeprägt ist als bei Ebbe. Ista zum Beispiel kann die Gestalt von Personen annehmen, die ihr schon einmal begegnet sind. Als sie in den Ort Shelwich reist, um ihren verschwundenen Vater zu suchen, rettet ein zwielichtiger Mann namens Alexo ihr das Leben und stiehlt ihr die Klarinette ihres Vaters, um Ista dazu zu zwingen, kleinere Aufträge für ihn zu erledigen. Gezwungenermaßen willigt sie ein und wird so unfreiwillig zur Meisterdiebin von Shelwich. Doch irgendetwas ist komisch in dieser Stadt… Es verschwinden immer mehr Menschen nach Angriffen von Grilks - Monster mit Flügeln und glühenden Augen. Ista kommt das Ganze komisch vor und so beginnt sie, gemeinsam mit ihren neu gefundenen Freunden Nat und Ruby, die beide auch geliebt Menschen durch die Grilks verloren haben, Fragen zu stellen und den Monstern auf die Spur zu kommen.
Die Stimmung dieser Geschichte ist wirklich düster und ein wenig gruselig. Damit hatte ich, zugegebenermaßen, nicht gerechnet. Es hat mich ein wenig an die Eeri-on-Sea-Reihe von Thomas Taylor erinnert: Ein verschlafenes Küstenstädtchen, das mit und durch die Magie lebt, in der mystisch-magische Wesen die Bewohner erschrecken und starke und junge Protagonisten, die alle Erwachsenen mit ihrem Mut in die Tasche stecken. Ista war mir sehr sympathisch und ist authentisch und ihrem Alter entsprechend angelegt. Ich habe gern mit ihr mitgefühlt und ihre Wandlung von einem einsamen, verlassenen Mädchen, das betrogen wurde, hin zu einer starken Persönlichkeit, die für sich selbst einsteht, endlich Freundschaften schließt und sich für andere öffnen kann, erlebt. Erwartet hatte ich eine kindlich angepasste Fantasy-Geschichte rund um Magie und Verwandlung. Bekommen habe ich eine spannende, finstere Detektivgeschichte mit toller Figurenentwicklung mit den Themen Zusammenhalt, Freundschaft, Mut und Vertrauen.
Einen Stern Abzug gibt es lediglich, weil ich einige Elemente des Buches zu verworren und zu komplex für eine Kindergeschichte ab 10 Jahren finde. Eine Altersfreigabe ab 12 Jahren wäre meiner Meinung nach angemessener – allein schon wegen des Gruselfaktors.
Ich bin gespannt auf das nächste Abenteuer mit Ista! Ob sie ihren Vater wohl wiederfinden wird?

Das Cover fande ich einfach wunderschön und nachdem der Klappentext mich auch sehr angesprochen hat, wollte ich die Geschichte unbedingt kennen lernen! Ich liebe Gezeiten und Magie und beiden vereint hat sich wunderbar und nach etwas ganz Neuem angehört!

Inheltlich dreht sich die Geschichte um neblige Gassen von Shelwich, in denen steigt und fällt die Magie mit Ebbe und Flut. Für die meisten ist ihre magische Fähigkeit nur eine nette Spielerei, die mit ansteigender Flut zutage tritt. Sie können plötzlich ihre Augenfarbe ändern oder einen Löffel vor ihrer Nase herumtanzen lassen. Aber Ista Flit besitzt eine mächtige Gabe, die sie zur Meisterdiebin der Stadt hat werden lassen. Dabei ist Ista nur auf der Suche nach ihrem verschollenen Vater. Doch er ist nicht der Einzige, der in dieser Stadt verschwunden ist. Mit Nat und Ruby an ihrer Seite taucht Ista ab in die dunklen Geheimnisse einiger Bewohner und stellt fest, dass in Shelwich manches mehr Schein als Sein ist.

Der Schreibstil war sehr kindgerecht und leicht zu lesen, dabei aber sehr bildhaft und lebendig. Vorallem die Beschreibungen der kleinen Stadt die von den Gezeiten umgeben ist hat mir sehr gefallen. Es hat sich schnell ein schöner Lesefluss ergeben und die Seiten sind dahingeflogen. Gleich zu Anfang fällt man quasi direkt in die Geschichte und ist an der Seite der Protagonistin Ista ohne viele Vorinformation zu haben geht es direkt los. Als Erwachsene bin ich damit gut zurecht gekommen, für Kinder wäre ein etwas sanfterer Einstieg vielleicht schöner und weniger verwirrend gewesen. Ista ist ein sympathisches Mädchen, die aber auch etwas mysteriöses an sich hat, denn sie kann ihre Gestalt in jemand anderen verändern. Die Geschichte beginnt in der ersten Hälfte des Buches sehr rätselhaft und Ista und ihr neuer Freund müssen mysteriösen Spuren folgen und das ganze liest sich fast wie ein kleiner Krimi. Nie weiss man welchem Erwachsenen man trauen kann und was eigentlich genau in dieser Stadt vor sich geht. Ich fand diesen Mix aus Krimi und Fantasygeschichte unheimlich spannend und interessant zu lesen. Das Ende kann überraschen und es gibt dann auch noch ein wenig Action und die Geschichte endet mit einem kleinen Cliffhanger, der auf jeden Fall Lust macht den nächsten Teil auch zu lesen. Insgesamt eine sehr schöne Geschichte, die manchmal etwas verwirren kann aber dennoch schön zu lesen ist.

- Sehr originelle Idee: Magie, die mit Ebbe und Flut wächst und schwindet – das ist frisch, fantasievoll und wunderbar atmosphärisch.
- Spannend erzählt: Die Handlung nimmt schnell Fahrt auf und bleibt durchgängig unterhaltsam. Es gibt viele clevere Wendungen und spannende Momente.
- Wunderschön gestaltet: Das Cover ist ein echter Hingucker, und auch die Illustrationen im Buch unterstreichen den magischen Ton der Geschichte.
- Protagonistin altersgerecht: Ista ist mutig, neugierig und nicht perfekt – genau wie es für ein Kinderbuch ab 10 sein sollte. Ihre Gedanken und Entscheidungen sind nachvollziehbar, wenn auch für ältere Leser vielleicht etwas einfach gehalten.
- Zielgruppe gut getroffen: Für Kinder ist die Geschichte genau richtig dosiert. Wer älter ist, wird sich vielleicht etwas mehr Tiefe wünschen, aber für die Altersangabe ist es absolut passend.

Magic of Moon and Sea ist ein fantasievoller und spannender Reihenauftakt mit einer ungewöhnlichen Magie, einer cleveren Heldin und vielen Geheimnissen. Wer fantasievolle Kinder- oder Jugendbücher liebt, wird hier gut unterhalten – ein schönes Buch für jüngere Leserinnen und Leser, die in neue Welten abtauchen möchten.

I absolutely adored this book! I devoured it! It delivered on everything it promised and I had so much fun!

Does it matter it's middle grade? Absolutely not. It has solid characters, great arcs, great voices and a fantastic mystery.

The magic system in this book was really interesting. Almost everyone is blessed with a little bit of tide magic. Something that can be as simple as changing your eye color or as incredible as Ista's magic. The ability to change into other people and use their magic!

Ista is a young kid who is working for an older man to steal things. And she always has to take the form of a specific person and be sure to be seen as that person, not herself. And the items always seem odd to her. She's even seen the person she works for just looking at them and taking them apart.

There's even a magical lane that pops up sometimes. What more could you want!?

Why does she work for this person who makes her steal? Because she came to this town looking for her father. And the first night there, tired, hungry, and alone, she is attacked by a monster called a grilk. I'm actually not solid on what they look like other than weird lizards with wings that don't propel them very well.

Ista's father was a musician and she has his clarinet. Well, this person swoops in, saves her, then takes the clarinet and says if she does 20 jobs for him, she'll get it back. When this all starts, she's almost at 20.

I tried guessing the motive for the mystery, why who would do what. As an adult who reads all kinds of mysteries, I was off a bit but it was such a good surprise!

And the story was diverse! I loved it. I will be buying this book. It's so cute, so good, and heartwarming. Not only is it diverse as far as racial dynamic but also sexualities. The adults who take care of Ista while she looks for her father are an old gay couple. They run a restaurant and are the cutest old men I've ever seen.

I loved this book. Please, please pick this book up. It's worth every second spent reading.

In this sort-of Ye Olde London Town, the tide brings magic – many people, although not quite all, have a link to the tide, and can do something wondrous when it peaks. Ista's talent is to 'borrow' people – to shape-shift into their physique. This is a perfect skill for the Faginesque man who has the last physical souvenir of her missing father, a clarinet, as 'hostage' until Ista does enough missions of thievery for him. But the tide and the magic also bring something nasty – horrid creatures of the night, able to snatch people who are never seen again. And when Ista learns that they might actually not be wild, but doing someone's bidding, that's when she sets herself on a course to really find what the tide's magic can result in...

I didn't find an ideal start to this, for while the narrative was intent on ploughing straight on with the drama, the first chapters didn't seem nearly friendly enough to the newcomer to this world. While we do learn what we need to know through example, and not exposition, which certainly makes a change, it felt a bit tougher than needed. But once we have a grasp on what's what and who's who then things are able to really flow, and provide what they can. And boy do they provide – there are instances of chapters later that not only have a cliffhanger at the end, but in the middle too.

What this also achieves is to sound nothing like a debut novel, for the world is rich, the political themes done strongly (but not too strongly) and the magic to be unusual enough without sounding downright bonkers. Yes, some people have the talent of colour-changing fingernails, some fly – all of this seems to have the logic and conviction needed for this to work. It's not flawless, but what it promises for the rest of the trilogy and beyond is certainly appealing, and the way this ends up a really distinct and distinguished tween fantasy is certainly worth a strong four stars.

Tide Magic: The Many Faces of Ista Flit

This is a middle grade magical fantasy where the source of the magic comes from the tide. I absolutely love this idea. As someone who lives a five-minute walk from the sea, I’m so conscious of the power of the sea. The way the atmosphere can shift in moments. Scents, stenches, mists, all manner of flotsam and jetsam, all roll in with the tide. Seasonal changes are huge: winter tides-always with looming moon- and spring tides- which swell and trespass on the walkways. There’s so much scope for magic here! And Clare Harlow has made the most of this inspiration. In this world, magic gifts come in the form of tide-blessings and range from cute little gimmicks to awe-inspiring abilities.


The brilliantly named, Ista Flit, is our protagonist, drawn to Shelwich in search of her missing father. It soon becomes apparent that her welcome to town was not a warm one: on the day she arrived, Ista was attacked by some monstrous creatures and was lucky to be saved by Alexo- a curious character, on the fringes of society. Shady and secretive, it’s hard to know what side he is on. When we catch up with Ista, she is having to carry out a series of perilous tasks for Alexo as recompense for the rescue. Ista carries out his bidding, since, she knows she is one of the lucky ones; so many more of the town’s inhabitants have disappeared without trace. On one such mission, Ista happens upon some clues as to the mysterious goings-on in Shelwich and she makes an acquaintance in Nat, who will spur her on to investigate. Together they make a great team of detectives as they discover the powerful forces behind the disappearances.

Tidemagic is atmospheric and laced with darkness. The world building is detailed enough without overwhelming, and the tension waxes and wanes like the tide. Book one sets up the next installment by not resolving everything & I will definitely read the next book in the series when it publishes.

Ista Flit lives in the town of Shelwich next to a river, a place imbued with a magic that rises and falls with the tides and gives its inhabitants ‘tide blessings’ - magical gifts. Ista’s tide blessing is that she can shift and assume the form of any other person and use their tide blessing while she does it. She uses her gift to steal things for the mysterious Alexo Rokis in order to win back her father’s clarinet - the only thing she has left of him since he disappeared. But Shelwich is under threat from the grilks - terrifying creatures that stalk the streets of Shelwich by night and snatch people away from their families.

When Ista meets Nat, in the course of one of her jobs, he challenges her to help him find the person behind the grilk attacks and they begin to investigate with the help of Ruby whose sister is the grilks’ most recent victim. But, as it turns out, the grilks are not the most dangerous things lurking in the dark alleys of Shelwich.

‘Tidemagic’ is positively oozing with atmosphere and really captures the spirit of a dank, riverside town with a dark undercurrent of magic. I particularly loved the elusive Nimble Lane that Ista can only find using her sharp nose. The setting gave me ‘Malamander’ meets ‘Six of Crows’ vibes.

This is quintessential MG fantasy. In terms of the recent discussion about the length of MG books, this is not a short book (around 300 pages), but it is definitely not an insurmountable length and the charmingly whimsical illustrations, by Karl James Mountford, definitely enhance the reading experience. It is also beautifully written–cunning and lyrical.

‘Tidemagic’ is a captivating, evocative read, perfect for fans of Jamie Littler, Amy Sparkes and Tamzin Merchant.

A girl who’ll do whatever it takes to find her father.

Tidemagic: The Many Faces of Ista Flit by Clare Harlow and illustrated by Karl J. Mountford is the first in the Tidemagic Series and is so much fun! There’s a blend of mystery, magic, and even some adventure in there.

I really loved the idea of the blessings that the people have. It can literally be anything and that’s their precious gift. Some hate it and some love it, some have insanely amazing gifts while others not so much. The way Ista connects with each person throughout the story is also very creative and aligns well with her personality and overall goal of finding her father.

Speaking of, the drive that she has is solely out of finding her dad. That’s such a cute and heartwarming motivation. She is young but has to do so much just to live and get a possible glimpse into what has happened to her only parent that's left.

I also enjoy the weird yet fun words and names, such great worldbuilding. As well as the friendship themes and her journey of being on her own to learning to have trust. On top of that, the illustrations are very cute and really give the story an interesting perspective due to the type of line work used.

I highly recommend this to anyone starting from age 8 who loves magic, mysteries, adventure, playing a detective, and building friendships as well as family. It’d be great for the classroom as well as at home to read with the family. Fun activities can be added to this to supplement the story and really get creative.

Ich dachte, ich wäre nur der Typ, der den Fernseher nicht richtig bedienen kann – aber offenbar kann ich auch Bücher nicht mehr aus der Hand legen. Meine Tochter hat mich nämlich überredet, Magic of Moon and Sea mit ihr zu lesen – und ich hab gedacht, na gut, bisschen Fantasy, bisschen Magie, bisschen Augenrollen meinerseits. Denkste! Nach zwei Kapiteln war ich mehr investiert als in mein Kaffeekonto.

Ista Flit ist nicht einfach nur eine Diebin – sie ist ein wandelndes Mysterium mit der Fähigkeit, Gesichter zu wechseln wie andere Leute ihre Socken. Und das in einer Stadt, in der die Magie kommt und geht wie meine Lust auf Steuererklärungen. Die Gassen von Shelwich haben Atmosphäre wie ein gutes Curry: düster, würzig, überraschend.

Meine Tochter war sofort Team Ruby (Zitat: "Endlich mal ein Charakter, der nicht auf den Mund gefallen ist!") und ich war eher bei Nat – vermutlich, weil er genauso planlos wirkt wie ich morgens um sechs. Die Dynamik zwischen den Charakteren ist herrlich chaotisch, genau wie unsere Frühstücksgespräche über den nächsten Plot-Twist.

Was uns beide begeistert hat: Die Story hat richtig Tempo, es passiert ständig was – aber nie so, dass man den Überblick verliert. Die Illustrationen? Wunderschön! Haben wir uns extra langsam angeschaut. Und die Übersetzung liest sich flüssig, nichts wirkt gekünstelt.

Am besten: Diese Welt fühlt sich echt an – als könnte man jederzeit eine Seitengasse runterlaufen und plötzlich mit einem schwebenden Löffel diskutieren, ob man besser wegrennt oder zaubert. Und ja, jetzt will meine Tochter Gestaltwandlerin werden. Ich? Ich bleib lieber beim Lesen.

Fazit: Ein Abenteuer für Jung und (nicht mehr ganz so) Alt, das uns beide gepackt, überrascht und zum Lachen gebracht hat. Band zwei? Bitte sofort auf den Nachttisch.

Shelwich is a town besieged by disappearances, especially when the tide is high and the magic is at its height. They say monstrous creatures called Grilks are snatching people away. For Ista Flit, who is new to Shelwich, there is one main concern on her mind, to find her Pa, who has vanished without a trace. She will do anything to find him, even if it means using her tide blessing as a face changer to become a thief for the mysterious Alexo Rokis. But are things really all they appear to be?

A cross between The Famous Five and a classic fantasy tale, I read through Ista Flit in just a few sittings. I loved how the mystery and adventure element of famous five type stories fitted so perfectly into a fantasy setting. The idea of tide blessings is especially imaginative and young readers will clearly love it. Ista’s blessing as a face changer who can ‘borrow’ other people opens so many possibilities for her adventures that we want to know who she will be next. Combining this with a compulsive and fast paced storyline and intriguing characters, you find yourself wanting to read on and solve the mystery before the characters do! I also loved the illustrations in the chapter headings and scattered through the book- they are lovely to look at and brilliant for young readers who like visual elements!

There were lots of questions left unanswered at the end of the book and locations unvisited which I would like to see more of. No doubt these will be answered and visited in the next book and I look forward to reading it!

Bei diesem Buch haben mich Cover und Klappentext sofort angesprochen und ich war mir sicher, dass ich diese Geschichte lieben würde - und ich lag absolut richtig. Das Setting von Shelwich und auch die Gezeitenmagie haben mich absolut verzaubert. Aber worum geht es eigentlich? In Shelwich steigt und fällt die Magie mit Ebbe und Flut. Viele Bewohner haben eine magische Gabe, darunter Ista Flit, die ihre Gezeitengabe hauptsächlich zum Stehlen von Gegenständen verwenden muss. Aber nicht nur Gegenstände verschwinden in der Stadt sondern auch Menschen. Und eigentlich ist Ista nur auf der Suche nach ihrem verschwundenen Vater. Nach und nach kommt sie dem dunklen Geheimnis auf die Schliche…ich liebe den Schreibstil total und auch die Charaktere sind absolut liebenswert. Besonders Ista mochte ich sofort, aber auch Nat und Ruby, mit denen sie sich im Laufe der Geschichte anfreundet sind einfach richtig toll. Ich fand die Geschichte auch richtig spannend und es gibt so viele Twists, einfach absolut genial. Ich wurde so oft auf eine falsche Fährte geführt und war immer wieder überrascht. Ich habe Charaktere lieben gelernt, denn nicht alles und jeder in diesem Buch ist wie es scheint. Oftmals trügt der Schein ganz schön. Ich bin absolut hin und weg und kann nur schwer in Worte fassen, wie gut mir diese Geschichte gefallen hat 🥹 Ich kann das Buch absolut empfehlen!

Meine Meinung

Clare Harlow entführt ihre Leser in „The Magic of Moon and Sea“ in eine magische, zauberhafte Welt, in der die Natur eine große Rolle spielt. Mit ihren detailreichen Beschreibungen erweckt sie die Umgebung zum Leben, sodass man all die Bilder wahrhaftig sehen und spüren kann.

Der Einstieg zeigte sich zunächst ruhig, doch steckte Spannung in der Luft, ob des bevorstehenden Abenteuers. Clare Harlow begeistert mit ihrem malerischen Stil und fängt besonders die Gefühle sehr gut ein. So fühlte auch ich mich, jenseits des Lesealters, als Teil der Geschichte.

Clare Harlow zeichnet geheimnisvolle und interessante Charaktere, die man gerne auf ihrem Abenteuer begleitet und die den Wunsch wecken, mehr über sie erfahren zu wollen. Doch das Highlight zeigt sich in der Atmosphäre und in der Verbindung von Magie und Natur, welche dieses Buch so einzigartig macht.

Die Handlung bleibt bis zum Ende phantasievoll, phantastisch und spannend, wenngleich es zwischendurch anspruchsvollere Passagen gibt, so werden Leser und Leserinnen ab 10 Jahren sich hier gut zurechtfinden.

Die Geschichte von Magic of Moon and Sea von Clare Harlow, hat mich nicht nur durch das bunt, lebendige Cover sehr angesprochen, sondern auch weil es ein magische Abenteuer beinhaltet wo Gezeiten eine wichtige Rolle spielen.
Da ich in dieser Hinsicht noch nicht viele Bücher gelesen hatte, wurde ich auf dieses Kinderbuch sehr neugierig.
Es geht darum, das das junge Mädchen Ista Flit, eine diebische Gesichtwandlerin, ihren Vater sucht. Denn dieser ist vor geraumer Zeit spurlos verschwunden.
Wer jetzt meint, dass dies eine einfach Suche wird, wird schnell eines besseren belehrt. Ista muss sich auf eine gefährliche Reise durch die Gassen von Shelwich machen, wo Ebbe und Flut, die Magie beherrscht und sich unheimlichen Kreaturen stellen.
Ein Abenteuer mit vielen Hindernissen und Geheimnissen. Denn diese fantasievolle Welt ist so magisch, das fast jeder eine magische Gabe besitzt und es Ista nicht leicht macht.
Sie muss sich viele Gefahren stellen und Rätsel lösen, die man so nicht vorher gesehen hat.
Tatsächlich habe ich etwas gebraucht, um in die Geschichte rein zu kommen, es war auch an ein paar Stellen, etwas langatmig, so das der Nervenkitzel etwas nachließ.
Aber an sich, wer dran bleibt, wird nicht enttäuscht und bemerkt sehr schnell das die Wendung nicht lange auf sich hat warten lassen und man doch noch uberrascht werden konnte.
An sich ein einfacher Einstieg in die Fantasiewelt, jedoch für meinen Geschmack auf das Alter individuell Anpassbar.
