Opal moves to the Taisei Kingdom with her beloved and childhood friend, Claude. While her new husband had made a name for himself in Taisei, they both know their new home doesn’t take kindly to foreigners. Behind the shimmery glamour of aristocracy lies nasty gossip and misogyny; they view Opal as a wanton woman! But Opal is nothing if not stubborn, and she won’t let these bullies have their way with her! She’s got a keen mind and a sharp tongue, and she’s not afraid to fight back.
All the while, trouble a letter from the king has Opal finding her beloved...in bed with another woman?! It can’t be! He isn’t the type to commit such a horrible act! Opal hasn’t married an adulterer... Or has she?!
I was hoping the first novel was setting up for a proper childhood friends to lovers romance, but it turned out pretty bland on that front, apart from our love interest acting kind of sus. I was at least hoping to see them become closer after being apart for so long, but most of the stuff was off-page. I would even have welcomed some court intrigue or politics, seeing how our heroine moved up in rank, and is in a fresh new kingdom as well, and the king looked like an interesting character. But all we got was a heroine who thinks too much like a modern day woman being a feminist in a Victorian type of rigid society. I feel pretty let down by this volume and I doubt I'll be finishing the series.
