"Mio, remember this—never, ever seek revenge..."
"But Dad, the Ten Commandments don’t say anything about not taking revenge."
"Because revenge is what will drive you to break them all."

His father’s voice echoed in Mio's mind, a haunting memory as he sat trapped in the unmoving elevator with three men he had only just met — Tomas, Arthur, and Mart.

Unexplainable horrors had unfolded since they became imprisoned in the eerie calls from the dead, relentless reminders of sins long buried, and most terrifying of all—the piercing stare of an unseen enemy lurking just beyond their sight.

"We're all going to die in here," whispered Pastor Tomas, his voice hollow and trembling.
"Why?" Arthur asked, his voice wavering.

"BECAUSE WE’RE ALL GUILTY..."

Arnold Subastil's Among Five Sinners is a unique take on the consequences of one's actions and a reminder of being a good Christian.

It starts with Mio being stuck in an elevator among four others. They went on a grueling journey while being in the same elevator - almost tantamount to a walk through purgatory and fiery pits of hell. It has drama, a bit of romance, and above all, horror. It was written in a descriptive, suspenseful way, making each scene effective.

It's a quick read, but it's because I was curious about what will happen next. It was short, sweet, and definitely a good read during Undas (All Souls Day)!

Book Title: Among Five Sinners (English Translation, originally Lima Kami Lahat Dito)
Genre: Mystery/Thriller
Author: Arnold Subastil
Rating: 4/5 (on Goodreads)

Excerpt:
"You never told the church about your past. When people started finding out, your victims came forward. You didn't repent; you found a way to escape. If you truly repented, you would've accepted that it was too late and turned yourself in!"

Review:
This was my first time reading a mystery and thriller with Christian themes, and it was quite interesting.

At first, I was confused by the title, but as the story went on, I saw that many chapter titles were inspired by Bible verses, especially Romans 6:23, "For the wages of sin is death," which is key to the story.

The Christian elements blend well with the mystery and thriller, creating a tense and sometimes chilling atmosphere. The story is engaging, and the suspense builds as it delves into themes like sin, guilt, and redemption.

Arnold Subastil shows that a gripping mystery doesn’t need many chapters to keep readers interested. However, I think the mystery could be stronger by showing more and telling less—letting actions and clues reveal the story, rather than explanations.

The writing is simple and easy to follow, but I believe the story could use more detailed descriptions and scarier moments to really pull the reader in, especially for fans of the genre.

Overall, it’s a solid read, and I applaud the author. With more focus on showing the mystery and adding a bit more horror, it could be even more exciting.

Great job, Arnold!

“Perfection was an illusion. Beneath every smile, every kind word, lay the potential for betrayal, cruelty, and darkness. No one was innocent; everyone was capable of sinking into the abyss."

The novella was short yet fun to read. It reminds me of the same eerie vibe of the Filipino thriller/horror movie “Deleter” starring Nadine Lustre. The good thing about this novella is that it highlights the Ten Commandments of God but it injects a scary mood to it. Each character in the novella shows their vulnerabilities throughout the book. The author can also experiment with some character arcs of the novella like Mio’s total guilt in the devastating incident that happened in the novella.

Overall, I enjoyed the Christian horror novella of Sir Arnold. Thank you so much, Sir.

Among Five Sinners delivers intense psychological horror wrapped in strong Christian themes. The confined elevator setting creates nonstop tension, while the unfolding supernatural events dig deep into guilt, sin, and redemption. The story is frightening, emotional, and surprisingly reflective. Arnold Subastil proves that horror can be both terrifying and spiritually meaningful.
