A teen girl gets the perfect second try at a first kiss in this young adult romantic comedy.
Francie was born in a stable. Really. Granted, it was the deluxe model with the light-up star on the roof, one of the many Christmas items for sale at her family’s Hollydale Holiday Shop. I was born in Detroit, Michigan, and raised in a suburban house that looked like all the others on my street. Sometimes I liked that sameness. It made me feel normal, when I worried I wasn’t.
Other times, though, I wanted to be different — to shine, to have people see me as special. I tried ballet dancing and singing and playing musical instruments, but I wasn’t very good at any of those things. But writing stories was fun! And often people liked what I wrote.
At Oakbrook Elementary, I wrote lots of poems and stories. One story, SUPERBOX, was about a crime-fighting shoe box. That story won me a prize. Even better? I got to read it out loud to my classmates, who laughed at the funny parts and cheered when Superbox fought off the evil potato chip can that was his mortal enemy. Nothing made me feel more special than hearing an audience cheer for a character I had written.
So, I kept writing. All through elementary school and junior high I wrote short stories and plays and poems.
But then I learned something.
Not everyone will like every story you write. And sometimes, that will make you feel very bad.
I remember once, I wrote a story about how I felt on Christmas Eve. I described my excitement, that tingling sensation I got anticipating the presents I knew would be under the tree the next morning. A boy in my class thought one of the words I used was “weird” and that I was weird as a result. He laughed at my story and his laughter stung.
I began to write more nonfiction, mostly articles for my high school yearbook and newspaper. These pieces took thought and hard work, but unlike my stories, I felt like I didn’t have to put my secret heart into them. I could hide behind the words and no one would make fun of me or the things I wrote about.
I also started to worry that maybe I was not as good a writer as I had imagined myself to be. I started comparing my writing to that in the books I read. No way was I as good as that! (More about that sort of thing here.)
By college, I had turned my writing toward advertising and marketing, using my creativity to sell the creative work of others.
Which wasn’t such a bad thing.
Why not, you ask?
It landed me at Vroman’s Bookstore, a large independent in Southern California, where I served as marketing director for about ten years.
What a great job! I was surrounded every day by books and authors and artists and readers. One of my responsibilities was to organize author events. I met thousands of writers and learned that most of them have their own fears. Even the most successful worry that readers won’t like their books. Even the most talented sometimes think they aren’t as good at writing as they ought to be.
Hearing this gave me courage.
While I was at Vroman’s, I also ran a summer writer’s workshop series. Every Saturday a writer, illustrator, or editor would come talk to aspiring writers about writing. Secretly, I took notes. Their talks gave me tools for writing better stories.
Finally, when my daughter turned two and I turned 37, I got the guts to try writing fiction again. Having a child brought me back to reading the kinds of books that I most loved, books for kids. As much as I enjoy reading grown-up books, it is kids’ books that grab my heart and make me think and spin my imagination.
Reading those books gave me inspiration.

This was so fun & wholesome! I appreciated the fact that the romance didn't completely override the story and that it was more so focused on the family & their business & tackling their issues.

Ho ho ho 🎅 Are you ready for a book full or Christmas cheer and a side of kitschy holiday decor? Look no further. This is a new release overflowing with all things Christmas and a side of wholesome teen romance. Frankincense (call her Frankie) was born in a barn -- the Holiday Shed to be exact and Christmas is in her blood. She has a dream of owning her a car that is just hers. Her Aunt Carole is out to make their holiday business more efficient. You will love the different uniform combinations that Frankie is subjected to in a search for the most customer-pleasing attire. The comments are a hoot. My favorite part of this book is the grass-roots effort to purchase hundreds of copies of Charlotte's Web to give away to families who visit area food pantries over the holidays. This is definitely a YA book, so if that is not your thing you may not enjoy this one. I really did.

This was a very cute YA Christmas story with A LOT of Christmas. It will definitely get you into the Christmas spirit. I have to admit this was a total cover impulse read. Which normally turns out well for me, but this one was just eh. Like I said, it was cute and our FMC is funny, but the writing was not my favorite, and it just didn't have that sparkle I wanted in a Christmas book. It just felt like a lot of the same thing over and over again which had my interest levels lowering.

Linda Urban you are a great author. Your story lifted my spirits. I started getting my Christmas decorations out and putting them up. The perfect choice for romantic comedy fans who love the enchantment of the Christmas season. The romantic plotline is strong but does not overshadow the treatment of friendship, grief, money worries, and more. I really related to Francie's feelings and I think others will also. Not just for the Christmas season for any time you feel like reading a great and happy story. Highly recommend.

Francie - short for Frankincense - is from a family where Christmas is serious business. They sell Christmas ornaments and run a school for Santas, to ensure that each Santa brings the proper magic. Number one rule: Santa never promises anything.
When her dad gets a bloody nose ahead of the annual appearance on TV as Santa, Francie fills in at the last second as "Santa's Intern." Thanks to a marketing intern - who Francie hates - the appearance goes viral, and suddenly the store is flooded with letters addressed to Francie. Her aunt assigns her the task of answering each one to keep the Christmas magic, in between torturing her with ridiculous trial uniforms that she's forced to get customers to answer surveys about.
There's a lot going on in this book, and many of the plots are given equal weight, which kept me from getting as emotionally invested as a reader. It's hard for me to say which was the main one. Francie is being made fun of at school by boys who heard she was a bad kisser after her first kiss. Meanwhile, Francie is hoping for a do-over with Hector, the boy who works at the Christmas Tree Farm next door. Her aunt is trying to convince her dad to sell the Santa School to a Hollywood Santa, while not treating Francie fairly at all. The side-plot where Francie battled her aunt was the most frustrating part of the book. Adult me kept wondering: why is no one standing up for her?
Francie brings her snarky commentary to every situation, keeping this book from being too sweet. Underneath the sarcasm, however, Francie truly believes in the magic of Christmas.
This is a cute Christmas read, especially for those who like sarcastic heroines who triumph in the end.

So cute! And quirky! Exactly what I was expecting from Linda Urban, author of my beloved A Crooked Kind of Perfect!
I saw Kate Messner talking about how she has a lot of middle grade level readers who want to read YA rom coms, but aren't ready for some of the content yet, and that this is the answer, and she was so right! The characters are mostly teens, but there's nothing that would keep a younger reader away, content-wise. And it's a romance, but it's not just about the romance: it's also about Francie's family business of running a huge Christmas store and Santa School. It's about family, and loss, and friendships, and dumb kids teasing you, and finding out that people aren't quite what they seem. It's also chock full of Christmas spirit, and what it means to be Santa Claus, which you know I loved! I kind of wanted a big confrontation between Francie and a couple of these people, but I guess in the spirit of the season this was a better option. Sigh. I guess I'm just a lot more petty than Francie!

Super cute YA romance-ish book about a teen whose family owns a Christmas shop. The main character reminds me of the fmc from Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging (I was obsessed with that series in middle school). Fun story that got me in my feels 🥲 Perfect Christmas read 🎄📖✨

So my Barnes& Noble had this out on the "Xmas Adult Romances" table... And it is very much a cute, wholesome YA novel following a 15 year old girl whose family runs a Christmas shop/Santa school. So, although I was very confused getting into this, overall it was a very wholesome, cozy story with minimal teen angst and maximum Christmas cheer and sassy teenage girl commentary. It felt a bit like a Hallmark movie to me, in a good way! I enjoyed it, but it's not necessarily a genre I enjoy or what I was expecting, which knocked it down a few stars from me as I rate books based on my personal enjoyment.

It’s a “no” from me.
1. “Talk Santa to Me”… cute, flirty, play on words like depicted in the cover? NO! But directed toward the main character’s deceased relative who used to portray Santa before passing away.
2. “Do you believe in God? […] is that why you transferred out of the Catholic school?” Nope. No time for that.
The main character is 14? 15? So I get that I am not the intended audience… but it was a HARD trudge.

This was a really quick read and definitely had tons of Christmas vibes.
There was a lot of family drama that was just kind of messy. I didn’t really get why there was so much conflict with Francie’s aunt. It took away from the coziness that I look for in holiday reads.
I really wish there was more romance too! The romance plot line was so thin and it could’ve been expanded on so much more.
I liked the friend group a lot and I think they had some fun moments.

This book was C H A R M I N G !
I'm constantly delighted by books that send me back to those weird-ass, wonderful, new and confusing feelings of high school. Like, I don't want to actually go back and re-live that stuff *no thank you,* but heck is it fun to read a book that hits so true to how high school felt. Plus it was Chuckle-Out-Loud fun, too.
MC has a bad first kiss experience and that plus her family ties to all things Christmas, really sets the stage for the plot of this book.
Then MC develops a crush on a dude and obsesses over HIS SHOULDERS and only his shoulders and it is so endearing and her inner monolog is silly and fun.
I could talk about the plot, which is sweet and fast paced and I enjoyed it, but honestly the author's writing style, and inner thoughts of the MC were just so good. Her calling hanging mistletoe "minefields," and using a 90s movie trailer voice in her head when daydreaming / having a dramatic moment? All of this worked for me.
If you want a sweet, short, fun, feel-good Christmas book, I definitely recommend.

This was a three-star read until 5 chapters from the end, at which point the Catholic main character denounced Catholic teaching. It's so disappointing that nearly every depiction of Catholic characters in mainstream books for kids is a subversive or provocative portrayal. There are so many Catholic families living their faith according to church teaching. I'm sure they'd love a book that reflects their experiences. Unfortunately, this isn't it. It's also barely a romance despite being marketed that way. It has a great cover, and there was one scene with some hilarious elf puns, but otherwise this was a big disappointment as my first book of 2023.

➽ Francie could be fun at times with her witty commentary and humor.
➽ I liked the idea of Santa School and her family’s store. Francie was very passionate about their traditions and showed a lot of caring about giving the kids the best experience.
Dislikes
➽ The storylines were all over the place and the plot dragged, because it couldn’t decide on what direction to take.
➽ The focus on Francie’s botched first kiss and having to find a boyfriend ‘to prove her kissing skills’ was made out to be such a big deal and felt very over the top. The actual romance starts too late and even then there’s no chemistry to be found.
➽ Francie’s Aunt bullying her and making her life miserable at the shop was never properly addressed. Francie is forced to wear uncomfortable uniforms, surveilled at work, sabotaged, and forced to work overtime and do work in her free time (she mentions 30 hours!! Francie is 16 I think, and still doing school, so I have no idea why her father didn’t care about her barely having time for homework and hobbies).

Talk Santa to Me is my first time reading anything by Linda Urban, and if she ever writes anything else like this, I am here for it! This is a super quick and cute read that focuses on Francie who is crushing on a certain someone and saving for a car while working at her family's holiday shop. There is a touch of romance, a lot of family drama, and plenty of Christmas vibes, making this a great little holiday read. It is YA so it is pretty short, and the audiobook is just shy of 6 hours, so it won't take long to finish in any format you read it in.
The romance part with Francie is super light, so I wouldn't go into this expecting a Christmas romance. I found it to be more about Francie's family (including how she deals with her grandpa's passing) and the Santa School part of their shop. And let's not forget bringing some Christmas magic to the children of the town as well.
I really enjoyed listening to the audiobook, but I did have to slow it down pretty far because of how fast our narrator Inés del Castillo spoke. I think the highest speed I got to was 2.3x speed, and anything higher meant I couldn't even understand what she was saying. She spoke a little too fast in my opinion, but I did think her voice and general manner were a great fit for Francie. I loved the Santa School aspect of the storyline and between kids in need and the death of the beloved grandpa, some moments made me tear up a bit. If you want something mostly lighthearted and quick for the holiday season and enjoy YA, Talk Santa to Me fits that bill.

super cheesy but not as romantic as i expected? in fact the romance took a back burner for like 90% of the book. the title felt misleading but maybe that’s the point
i liked the characters - even though they weren’t all fully developed/shown a lot each one was believable and deeper than francie expected (except mr. tongue depressor) (and maybe the tyrannical aunt… that was pretty concerning. idk how child welfare works in indiana but i doubt most of what she did was legal.)

3.75 stars! this was a cute super christmassy ya read. it was so sweet and definitely would be super perfect if i was a younger reader. i loved the whole town vibe and the christmas ambiance was so on point.

This was very much a YA novel, but super adorable, and I enjoyed every second of it. I loved the main character and her cute little banter with all of her friends, family, and crush, and I loved the lore behind her family and their little Christmas town, definitely a cute & warm/cozy Christmas Book to read.

This book was mid in a nostalgic way. If you could stuff a hallmark movie into a y/a book, this would be the outcome. Like, it’s not the best book you’ll ever read but you just read it for the cute christmas rom-com story. Very “Christmas Tree Farm” by Taylor Swift vibes.

This was so stinkin’ sweet! The characters were all likable and the story was unique with the Santa School stuff. It made my heart very full several times. Such a sweet story!

this is my first 1 star rating in a while … i’m so sad i didn’t like this book.
it’s extremely YA - a little to much for me, it’s very childish🥴 it was really boring and drug out.
i’m not really sure what the plot even was, i ended up skipping a lot of it because i just couldn’t get into it, and there was just so many random details/wording that was so unnecessary in my opinion.
i had really high hopes for this read so im a little disappointed. 😔
